Dr. Douglas K. Smith gives a presentation based on his PhD dissertation in which he does a blended discourse analysis of the flood account in both the Hebrew Masoretic Text (MT) and Greek Septuagint (LXX). His goal is to validate a holistic methodology that can 1) discern the structure, coherence, and communicative purpose of the discourse and 2) compare the versions to reveal and assess the translation strategies of the translator of Greek Genesis. The presentation is followed by questions from Matthew Delaney and Dr. Nathan French.Dr. Smith is a Professor, Researcher, and Speaker with a PhD in Biblical Studies from Columbia International University. Chiastic structure is a literary device in which a sequence of ideas is presented and then presented in reverse order. For example, Ben Franklin said, "By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail." The result is a mirror effect. At the climax of the story's structure, we see the reversal of events that bring life instead of death. Esther and Mordecai actively participate in the unfolding drama of Esther 5:1-7:6. Their courage, wisdom, and strategic actions demonstrate how God uses human agency to accomplish His purposes. We, too, have a role to play in God's grand narrative.
Psalm 58 Psalm 58 is another Trouble and Trust Psalm within the series of 8 complaint Psalms from 52-59. Psalm 58 has some of the most difficult Hebrew to understand in the Psalter, both in how specific words should be translated and the understanding of certain phrases. Vivid description of what the wicked are like V. 1-5 The first hard to translate word is in verse 1, translated by the New King James as “silent ones.” It is the Hebrew word elem, and is only found here! In cases like this, we have to be humble as to the meaning of the word, and make sure we make much of how the words around it and the context help us understand what is meant. Instead of living by God's truth about what is right, the wicked people David is referring to think that they are right because they have gotten away with what they have done, and nobody has stopped them. They embraced pragmatism, “the end justifies the means” and did not reallt believe God would hold them to account one day. Psalm 58 has elements of chiastic structure in it. Chiastic structure has parallel words and/or thoughts at the beginning and end, and the verses unfold with parallel thoughts with a middle thought. Notice the progression of wickedness in verse 2 – first wicked plots are made in the head, and then carried out with the hands. According to verse 2, the sinful actions people think are okay because they get away with them are actually wickedness in God's eyes! We need to judge things using His standard of right and wrong, the Holy Bible – First for ourselves, and then as we call the wicked to repentance. Verse 3 goes right along with what David taught in Psalm 51:5 – we all have a sin nature that leads to sin choices early in life. Instead of turning to God, the perpetually wicked keep living in sin. Imprecatory prayer for the destruction of the wicked V. 6-11 A toothless snake or lion can still lash out and try to bite you, but can't do you lasting damage. So David prays that God will de-fang the wicked, make them only able to ‘gum' at the saints instead of devour them! Notice David is turning vengeance over to the Lord, and not taking action himself. The Lord may lead us to fight in a just cause and defend ourselves and others, but Old Testament saints weren't just looking to take matters into their own hands. Interestingly, teeth are featured in almost all the Psalms in the Psalm 52-59 series – 52:2; 53:4; 55:21; 56:1-2; 57:4; 58:6; 59:7,12. What do you think he has in mind by the figures of speech in verse 7? What do you think he has in mind by the figures of speech in verse 7? What do you think he has in mind by the figures of speech in verse 7? Taken together, David is obviously praying for the wicked's plans to be frustrated, his resources wasted, his instruments of harm to be rendered ineffectual, his movements to be stopped in their tracks, and for their judgment to come. Verse 10 reminds us of the difference between the spiritual dispensation we are now living in compared to the age of Old Testament Israel. Israel had physical enemies that would do them harm, and it was a good thing when God gave His people victory over them, and the blood on their feet was the enemy's blood, not their own. During this age of grace, Christians pray for their enemies to find the same salvation in Christ that they have. This is also a good place to say that Baptists have always been right to reject the idea of the state and church being tied together in supposedly “Christian” countries. Christians may serve their country to stop the Adolph Hitler's of the world, and rejoice when they stop him. But we are leaving the physical defense of Christ's honor to Christ Himself for when He returns to earth, and as Revelation 20 tells us, the blood of His enemies will again flow.
We've entered 1–2 Samuel's epilogue, which rewinds the clock to mighty deeds of mighty men and gives us a chiastic cheat code that reveals some fascinating connections between King David and all that's gone before.

Psalm 47 Psalm 47 is a tribute to God, the _______________________ King over all the earth. Did you see a touch of chiastic structure in the Psalm as I read it? Chiastic structure is when the first and last verses have corresponding thoughts, and then the next verses in, with a key point made in the middle. Praise God because He is King over Israel and the __________________ earth V. 1-4 What joyful expressions of worship are called for in verse 1? God is not just the King of His people Israel, but the King of all peoples with a special place for __________________ in His plan. What are some things about God that elicit AWE in us? If only Israel's ancient and current ______________ realized that God's plan of blessing for them includes doing it through Israel and Israel's Messiah Jesus. Praise God the King with __________________________ V. 5-9 The phrase “go up” let us know this is a type of enthronement Psalm. Just as a King of Israel would “go up” to Jerusalem to be crowned over Israel, God deserves to “go up” and be _______________________ King over all the earth (Psalm 2). “And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all peoples to Myself.” -Jn. 12:32 As verse 9 indicates, pagans hoped appeasing their idols would shield them from bad things happening. But God alone is every nations' ___________________ shield, and biggest threat if a people defies Him! How many times in verses 6-7 do the sons of Korah bid us to sing praises to God? Book 2 of the Psalms usually uses the more general God, or Elohim, as in Genesis 1:1 – in the beginning God created the Heavens and the Earth. Here the nations that instinctively know that there is a Creator God are urged along with Israel to sing praises _____________ understanding. The God of Abraham is the God _________________ peoples need to worship. And the Lord shall be King over all the earth. -Zechariah 14:9 (see also 14:16)

Chiastic structures were utilized by Bible authors to effectively communicate their intended messages. These underlying structures not only shape the scriptures but also aid the audience in visualizing important concepts. A prime example of this can be found in the Gospel of Mark, where a chiastic structure introduces the Good News of God's impending reign and highlights Jesus as the anointed Messianic figure destined to become king. These opening verses not only serve as a powerful introduction but also set the tone for the events that unfold throughout the remainder of Mark's Gospel. This lesson explores the ancient literary technique called a chiastic structure or a chiasm. The biblical authors use literary devices such as the chiastic structure to add depth to the text. The chiastic structure focuses the reader's attention and helps communicate the author's point. We will use the story of the Tower of Babel to help illustrate a chiastic structure. The Tower of Babel story is a masterpiece of literary work much more profound than most expect. The depth comes from the underlying chiastic structure and helps communicate a profound message about the nature of humanity. On March 24th, 2022, the Associates for Biblical Research announced the discovery of an ancient curse tablet (defixio) on Mount Ebal at the site of "Joshua's altar." This is a potentially WORLD-SHAKING discovery, but the dust has not yet settled, and the academic war is only just beginning. We must clearly understand what is at stake, and think seriously of what our faith depends on. We should also understand the value of such evidence in arguing our case for God, for Christ. I would suggest that my listeners review that episode. I have listed a series of websites below for more information. Here, worship is broken. It is not acceptable. Presence & emotion are not enough! Sunday worship is only as valid as your life all week Worship is either helped or hindered by: how we treat people - possessions - God's promises Malachi writes with a Chiastic structure: a literary technique working from the center outward. Worship is elevated by… 1) Living and Loving God's Covenant of Marriage (2:10-16) We have ONE Father... One Creator... One Lord that we follow Yet, we profane the sanctuary (worship) of the Lord in 2 Ways: * marrying those who do NOT follow the Lord * divorcing a spouse that DOES follow the Lord * 2) Living and Loving God's Commitment to Mankind (2:17-3:5) The injustice of the people: 1) link with sorcerers (fortunetellers) - dabbling in the occult, horoscopes, 2) lust for the flesh (adulterers) - sing against your spouse or future spouse 3) language of falseness (swear falsely) - life about someone and to someone 4) larceny in finances (oppress wage earner) - stealing from othere 5) lawlessness among families (widow and fatherless/orphans) - oppressing the vulnerable, having no power to protect themselves. 6) liability toward foreigners (turn aside the alien) - people not from here and not like us This list of injustices reveals the practices in Malachi's time and even our own days. This is not an exhaustive list, but does indicate areas opposed to God's law Antagonist or apathetic? What's the difference between indifference to injustice and injustice? Not much! Or perhaps you have been an accuser. Seeing injustice, you accuse God of not caring. Our view and actions with injustice in this world testify our relationship with God God's answer to the injustice… was to send 2 messengers - 3:1 “Behold, I send my messenger (John the Baptist), and he will prepare the way before - 3:1b “the messenger of the covenant in whom you delight, behold, he is coming” John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” This last Messager will set ALL things right! Do you trust God? Is He your ONE FATHER…. ONE CREATOR? How is your worship? How is it displayed in your home? In your life? In your interactions with the hurting and hopeless? Jesus has come… has He come to you? To your heart? Do you delight in Him and demonstrate His love to others?

The Receptive Life: Learning How to Receive All of the Gifts That Only the Triune God Can Give
The Book of Revelation can be a difficult portion of Scripture to understand. It's filled with strange visions, coded numbers, cryptic symbols, a red dragon with seven heads and ten horns, beasts from the sea and the land, four horsemen, dire warnings, plagues, wars, apocalyptic events, a fiery lake of burning sulfur and the promise of a new heaven and a new earth.Daunting? Yes!But when the last book of the Bible is read through the lens of the Old and New Testament Scriptures and our eyes are focused on Jesus, the Lamb of God slain for the forgiveness of sins, then the revelation of the “things that must soon take place” blesses the persecuted Church of all ages.Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of the prophecy, and keep the things that are written in it, for the time is near. In today's lesson, we explore the structure of the final fifteen chapters of Exodus and look at how the concept of creation or re-creation is woven into the narrative. We mentioned in our previous lesson that the final chapters in Exodus are written in a Chiastic structure. A Chiasm – which gets its name from the Greek letter chi – is a method of helping the reader or listener focus their attention on the main idea that the author intends to convey. Tonight, we take a closer look at this chiastic structure and what the author of Exodus intends as the turning point. Within this structure, we find something interesting – creation itself is being revisited. Building the tabernacle is creating a space for the presence of God to dwell with the Israelites. In this sense, it mimics creation as a dwelling place for God's presence and his people. As we follow Exodus to its close, we see a motif of renewal, rebirth, or recreation. God and his people are back together – stepping forthrightly into the future. ---------------------------------------------- Support Fig Tree Ministries: https://donorbox.org/support-figtree-ministries Shopping on Amazon: https://smile.amazon.com/ch/83-0587741 www.figtreeteaching.com Blog Post: https://www.figtreeteaching.com/faith-lessons/creation-repeated#/ Class handout: https://www.figtreeteaching.com/uploads/1/1/9/7/119763168/fig_tree_exodus_study_pt_24_creation_revisitied_2.pdf Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/7mh4v8e7FDwOoPhQd7bz7Y YouTube: https://youtu.be/5K0Es1Ex3Wg References: Rabbi Jonathan Sacks - Covenant and Conversation: Exodus https://smile.amazon.com/Covenant-Conversation-Exodus-Book-Redemption/dp/1592640214/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1IL0UUBB4M58L&keywords=covenant+and+conversation+exodus&qid=1665866556&qu=eyJxc2MiOiIwLjAwIiwicXNhIjoiMC4wMCIsInFzcCI6IjAuMDAifQ%3D%3D&sprefix=covenant+and+conversation+exodus%2Caps%2C99&sr=8-1
My birthday episode, recording from my car in a parking lot. Possibly after too much beer...
834 years after Joel spoke his prophecy, the Apostle Peter name-checked and quoted him verbatim in order to help to make sense of the birth of the Church and the falling of the Holy Spirit. This is just a small window into how the God of the Bible LOVES to communicate... through Prophecies Spoken and Fulfilled. What does that have to do with you? What does that have to do with today? Could it be that God's not done speaking? (And, what does DJ Khaled have to do with any of this?)
When people all spoke one language they united to build a tower to reach to heaven, but God came down and confounded the languages of the people and their scattered. In our third in a series of "Tears of the Patriarchs" we examine the seven scenes where Joseph weeps in the last few chapters of Genesis. We use the literary chiastic analysis to reveal the moment of deep awareness of his wound and its catharsis. We compare the analysis of Harav Aharon Lichtenstein (z'l) with scholar Aviva Zornberg in exposing a spiritual roadmap we too can participate in in our healing.

We will continue to address Paul’s second midrash in Galatians, which he presents in a chiastic construction. To understand why Paul refers to “the curse of the law”, we must first perceive the chiasm. We will learn in the next podcast that the Law is not a curse!

Elder Eric Stephens & Pastor Wade Sutherland conclude our Godly Sorrow series with this sermon entitled, "No Regrets". Walking through the entirety of the Word of God, these pastors provide clarity on the brilliant insight seen in Chiastic literary structure. From Genesis to Revelation, passages in the Word that are written in chiastic structure are able to emphasize, amplify, and clarify unparalleled truths! The final portion of the sermon took this new found understanding of chiastic structures and demonstrated the key to all treasures found in 2 Corinthians 7:10-11. Our pastors gave at least three extraordinary lessons for you to grasp from the chiastic structure in 2 Corinthians. First, there is a parallel relationship between every action mentioned in the verse that will enrich both your daily walk and your overall understanding in the Kingdom. Second, this whole process can be summarize in three statements that are the definition of a victorious life of Faith. Third, the "Unparalleled Truth" revealed in this structure is the key to your entire walk with God in any circumstance, at any time, and in every station of life. Listen to this sermon now and learn this unparalleled truth that will leave you living a life with no regret!

In this episode, Kristopher discusses Philippians chapter 3 using the metaphor of doorways as an exegetical tool for understanding the message. Kristopher describes how the Apostle Paul challenges the use of religious tribal markers as litmus tests for belonging or even salvation. He unpacks how Paul, in this passage, may even been warning his congregation to watch out for creating exclusive religious cultures inadvertently. The original sermon was given at the Redlands Seventh-day Adventist Church in Southern California during the “Relevant” worship gathering. Chronicles of the End Times – Mark Davidson pt 2 (https://kcrpodcast.com/chronicles-end-times-mark-davidson-pt-1/screen-shot-2019-08-20-at-2-35-34-pm/) A popular topic in Christian, as well as secular, circles today, is the topic of the End Times. People have been talking about the prophetic end times for thousands of years. Every time there is a natural disaster or some type of tragedy involving the loss of life, people talk about “the day and the hour” is coming… Most people have not studied the end times. Most Christians probably have not studied about the all of the prophetic scriptures that deal with the end times. Many probably have only heard snippets about these things in a passing Sunday sermon by their pastor every now and then. Well, my guest today has made it his passion to study, document and share what he has learned over the years concerning “the end times.” He has written numerous books on this topic and today, we are going to be discussing the latest book by Mark Davidson, titled, “Chronicles of the End Times – Using an Ancient Reading Method to Better Understand the End of the Age.” Mark Davidson (a pen name) is a follower of Jesus Christ. He is a life-long student of the Bible, and has studied eschatology, world history, and geopolitics as well. He has now “connected the dots” (so to speak), yielding a new interpretation of the Book of Daniel, which is now being proven by current events we see happening recently in the news. In addition to “Chronicles of the End Times,” Mark is also the author of “Daniel Revisited: Discovering the Four Mideast Signs Leading to the AntiChrist” and “Iran’s Great Invasion – And Why It’s Next in Bible Prophesy.” You can read all about Mark’s books, his blog posts and where he is speaking at his website, www.foursignposts.com (http://www.foursignposts.com/) I will have links to all of the books and his website in the show notes below. Mark is a graduate-degreed Aerospace Engineer having worked for over thirty years in the defense and space industries. He and his wife live in Colorado but I’m blessed to have him here with us today… Help me welcome to the program, Mark Davidson. Mark, thank you for taking the time out of your schedule to visit with us today. Mark, the first question I always ask our guests is this. Other than that short bio I just read, tell us in your own words, “Who is Mark Davidson?” Let’s jump right into this book. It sounds absolutely fascinating. Chronicles of the End Times – Using an Ancient Reading Method to Better Understand the End of the Age. What is this book about and how is it different? That word, “Chiastics.” Can you explain, in layman’s terms for me, what that actually means and how it is used in reading Biblical materials, passages, etc? We use this in writing today: Introduction, tell them what you are going to say. Body, tell them. Conclusion, tell them what you said as it relates to the introduction. How did you discover this method of reading the Scriptures? Why do you think this method, “Chiastics” is not widely used in churches today? Interesting… So, let me go back to the question of “What makes this book different” from others you have written or others that may be out there on the market discussing the same “End Times” scenarios? There are several books in the Bible that discuss the “end times.” I mean, Ezekiel, Daniel, some of the minor prophets, Zechariah, Matthew 24, of course, The Revelation – it is basically interwoven in almost, not all, but almost all 66 books in the Bible. Is there a way to read our daily Bible passages using this method? Or do we need outside resources to better understand this concept? So, according to your studies, the events we see happening today have already been predicted by this “Chiastic” study of the Bible, correct? What are some of the more obvious ones that you have identified? What else does this “Chiastic”...

At Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Charleston, SC, our senior pastor preached from Deuteronomy 31 on Sunday, February 26 as he explained this important literary structure named for the Greek letter 'X' (chi). In reality, there is no central chapter or verse of the bible because when the bible was written and collated there were no such divisions. This is just a fun exercise.)
What is a chiasm / chiastic structure in the Bible? Where in the Bible do chiasms appear?
