This week on Factual America, Matthew Sherwood is joined by Miles Coleman, writer and co-producer of Netflix docu-series, FIFA Uncovered. When the Fédération Internationale de Football Association – more popularly known as FIFA – was founded in 1904, its remit was simple: to oversee a competition between various footballing nations. Today, however, it is a multi-billion dollar organisation that operates almost as a nation state. FIFA Uncovered explores the governing body's rise and the fall of FIFA executives following allegations of corruption in 2015. How did it happen? As Miles tells Matthew, money is at the heart of the matter. It began over fifty years ago when sportswear firm Adidas wined and dined FIFA executives in order to become a major partner. Over the years, people and interests who wanted to win at all costs passed money to executives to make sure the ‘right' decisions were reached. For example, and allegedly, the grant of the 2022 World Cup to Qatar. Miles discusses the challenges of making a documentary about a subject people either know everything or nothing about, of interviewing people in the age of Covid, and his determination to let the FIFA executives interviewed in the docu-series tell their own story. He looks at the hot topic of sports washing, how FIFA preferred dealing with repressive regimes to democracies, and what benefit a country like Qatar gets from holding the World Cup: it begins with good PR but goes far beyond it. Is FIFA Uncovered a docu-series simply for football fans? No. It begins with football, but ultimately becomes ‘a story about human nature' as well as the success and humbling of an empire. Join Matthew and Miles as they explore a topic both epic and personal. Watch the episode at https://factualamerica.com “... this is a story about human nature. And it's a story about politics. It's about what happens when you let an organization with immense money in the bank, and immense power, and very greedy individuals running it. It's part four of our look at the history of FIFA, which means it's time to introduce two new fun characters to our story, Chuck Blazer and Fred Warner, two men so corrupt even other FIFA delegates were shocked by them, which is saying something. We then cover the awarding of the 2018 World Cup to Russia and the 2022 Cup to Qatar and the delightful mess that was. Titus O'Reily and Mick Molloy then discuss how even Vladimir Putin went out of his way to suck up to FIFA executives, even providing content to one executive's travel blog.

With Sepp Blatter newly installed as FIFA President, he builds links with Jack Warner and Chuck Blazer, important executives with reputations for corruption.
As the World Cup launches in Qatar, a country not historically known for its friendliness toward Jews and Israelis, Menschwarmers hosts Gabe and James wanted to look at the implications for Jewish fans. It's one thing to scope out Jewish players and talk about Israeli-Qatari relations, but we wanted to dive deeper, so we're bringing you a summary of the rise and fall of Chuck Blazer, a FIFA administrator-turned-informant who was partly responsible for bringing the World Cup to Qatar in the first place—and then blowing the whistle on the whole operation. The boys also recap what else is new in the world of Jews and sports, including Alex Bregman's World Series championship to Spencer Horwitz joining the Blue Jays' 40-man roster. Credits Menschwarmers is hosted by James Hirsh and Gabe Pulver, and produced and edited by Michael Fraiman. Chuck Blazer was one of the most powerful men in international soccer - or football, as most of the world knows it. As a member of FIFA's executive committee, he was among an elite few who managed the World Cup, the globe's ultimate sporting competition. To his fellow Lords of Soccer, Blazer was loyal; and like many of them, he was utterly corrupt. In November 2011, two federal agents stopped the eccentric sports executive outside his Trump Tower apartment. They offered him a deal - spill the tea on FIFA's secret world of bribes and money laundering or go to prison for tax fraud. Blazer took the deal, setting in motion the largest international corruption investigation in history. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
This week the US Soccer Federation (USSF) and the US Women's National Team settled a six year fight over equal pay. The players will receive $24m. The USSF has promised to equalise pay between men's and women's national teams for all competitions, including the FIFA World Cup.Why is this happening now?Next week the USSF elects its next president, whose tenure will include the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the US, Canada and Mexico. The two candidates are former president Carlos Cordeiro and today's guest, the acting president Cindy Parlow Cone, who took over two years ago, when Cordeiro was forced to resign after his legal team filed court documents that implied men are better than women, so should get more money.“…by ignoring the materially higher level of speed and strength required to perform the job of a Men's National Team (MNT) player. A reasonable juror could conclude that the job of MNT player requires materially different skill and more responsibility than plaintiffs' job does, while also taking place under materially different working conditions,” .Cue a shitstorm: Coke, Visa, Nike et al took umbrage and Cordeiro walked, leaving the USSF in chaos. And that's saying something, given the organisation was led by Chuck Blazer for thirty years, until he was flipped by the FBI as part of their FIFA corruption investigation…So Cone for Prez? Maybe…Given the context, Parlow Cone appears a shoe-in for president. But the word is that the election will be close. So this week's news feels very strategic. After six years, the pay dispute is suddenly settled days before the election.Cone is a former US international player and has Megan Rapinoe, Alex Morgan and every pro-women, equal pay supporting liberal member of the USSF selling her campaign across social and mainstream media under the banner of ‘forward not back'.But elections are not about the candidates, they're about the voters. Read the threads that followed the news of this week's equal pay settlement and you'll meet the usual culture warriors doing their thing. Carlos Cordeiro's campaign is focused on his business background and a plan for the grassroots development of the game in America, a key USSF constituency. American Huckster is the first inside account of the international soccer scandal that rocked the world. The Legend opens up the EPLpod vault and plays a previously unreleased interview from November 2017 with author Mary Papenfuss.

That's right. We're talking about the life and times of Chuck Blazer, baby.

You may remember that back in May of 2015, senior FIFA officials were arrested on corruption charges in Zurich. Those arrests rocked the foundations of the world's most popular sport. But little did we know at the time that the case was so wide-ranging and complex that its reverberation involved the FBI, the IRS, Donald Trump, Christopher Steele, Robert Mueller, James Comey, and Vladimir Putin. As the final of the World Cup is played in Russia this weekend, the WhoWhatWhy podcast features a conversation with investigative journalist Ken Bensinger, who spells out the 40-year history of bribery, corruption, and money laundering that has been at the heart of world-wide professional soccer. Ken Bensinger was part of the team at BuzzFeed that uncovered the Christopher Steele dossier. He's also become the go-to authority on the complexity of the world's biggest sports scandal. This week, Bensinger tells Jeff Schechtman how corruption ran unchecked for decades, until a team of investigators from the one country that cared the least about soccer stepped in to try to stop it. He takes us up close and personal with American FIFA executive Chuck Blazer, considered the most corrupt soccer official in history. He was a friend of Donald Trump and lived on the 49th floor of Trump tower. When the IRS discovered and confronted him about not having paid taxes for 17 years, Blazer turned state's evidence against other FIFA officials. We learn about the FBI and IRS soccer task forces. The multinational crimes unit overseen by the FBI director, at the time — Robert Mueller. When the arrests were made in May 2015, it was announced by then-FBI Director James Comey. Bensinger also tells Schechtman about how Putin became interested in wanting the 2018 World Cup, and how he enlisted oligarchs in the process. And finally how Putin's corrupt efforts were uncovered by the British, who'd had a competing bid, and hired none other than Christopher Steele to find out what the Russians were up to. There is a lot more to this complex global story — including heads of state, like the president of Argentina who felt soccer was more important than his government; an illegal sports book that was busted at Trump Tower; and the role of Russian organized crime. Listening to this week's podcast is a great prelude to the World Cup final. Ken Bensinger is the author of Red Card: How the US Blew the Whistle on the World's Biggest Sports Scandal (Simon & Schuster, June 12, 2018).
Riley sat down with Ken Bensinger about his new book "Red Card. How the US Blew the Whistle on the World's Biggest Sports Scandal," Chuck Blazer, being an actual journalist (not the crap we do), and about books being released on Thursdays. Twitters: @MLSAces @RileyJamesIAC

David Downs is one of the most prominent executives in US Soccer history with a career spanning over three decades. Today his involvement with the game is mainly spent coaching youth teams just north of NYC in Westchester County. Most recently he served as the Commissioner of the NASL (North American Soccer League) through its first and second seasons in 2011 and 2012. Prior to the NASL he spent more than 30 years in the broadcast industry as an executive with both ABC Sports and Univision Communications. During his time at both networks, Downs successfully led negotiations with the very top leadership at FIFA to acquire the U.S. television rights to every World Cup from 1994 through the 2014 tournament. In 2009 he was named the Executive Director of the USA bid Committee to host either the 2018 or 2022 World Cups - a bidding process where the US in the end lost out to Russia and Qatar. We discuss his journey from the early days working as an Olympic Researcher at ABC traveling around the world pre-internet days asking participants about their personal details, to running the programming department and negotiating for major sports rights together with Bob Iger, the current CEO of the Walt Disney Company, to leading the US bidding process for the FIFA World Cup. David takes us through the fascinating details of the bidding process, building the team on a shoestring budget, aligning with lobbyists, FIFA’s insane demands, the disappointment and aftermath after losing out to Qatar, negotiations with Sepp Blatter, working with the infamous Chuck Blazer who later was implicated in the biggest corruption scandal in soccer history, all that and much more! American ex FIFA executive at the centre of a decades long corruption scandal admitted that he accepted bribes linked to the hosting of both the 1998 and 2010 soccer world cup. The alleged bribe relating to the World Cup that was awarded to France in 1998, was information not made clear in the main indictment released by the U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch last week. Charles or "Chuck" Blazer's sworn testimony in front of a judge in 2013, in which he also pleads guilty to racketeering, wire fraud, money laundering and tax evasion, confirms that he and others on the FIFA Executive agreed to accept bribes 'in conjunction' with the selection of South Africa as 2010 World Cup host. Sherwin Bryce-Pease reports.

Rog and Davo ask all the big questions about the FIFA indictments -- including whether Sepp Blatter sometimes tires of eunuchs fanning him, is Chuck Blazer really an American Hero, and will EUROPOL now stage a counterstrike by storming NFL offices to arrest Roger Goodell -- and some lesser ones, such as America WTF?!?!?! is this the end for Blatter, and if he does go, will it make any difference to FIFA's "culture of corruption?"
