Superman (2025) brings audiences a version of Lois Lane and Clark Kent who are clearly very hot for each other. But could they ever actually consummate their relationship?“Putting it delicately…do you…eat?”Pulitzer Prize winning reporter Lois LaneWelcome to Does it Fly? After Dark, the podcast that puts your favorite pop culture concepts to the test…but this time in a slightly more adult setting. That's right, for this episode, we were live in front of an audience (at Mission Brewery in San Diego, California) with our brilliant friends Rosie Knight and Jason Concepcion of I Heart Media's X-Ray Vision podcast. Honestly, we needed all the help we could get to discuss the hot button issue of the moment: how is it possible for Superman and Lois Lane to have sex?Look, anyone who watched Rachel Brosnahan and David Corenswet as Lois and Clark on screen in James Gunn's brilliant Superman movie this year absolutely could feel the heat coming off those characters from the screen. So it's not “how COULD they” so much as it is “seriously, HOW could they?” As we all know, Kryptonians are made of, um, harder stuff than humans, and folks have spent the better part of 80 years quietly asking how Superman and Lois can be intimate without serious injury to the human part of the equation.Sure, there aren't many actual scientific studies involving human to alien sex, so we examined this heat-vision hot topic from all positions…sorry…angles in a raucous, slightly more R-rated format than usual. Check it out, but beware…this episode contains adult themes and strong language!Watch the video version here! https://youtu.be/4E3Zc3uT97MThis episode of Does it Fly is brought to you by Upper Deck. Fleer Brilliants Superman shines the light on Superman and Metropolis in a bright and brilliant new way!Whether it's the 90-card base set on rainbow foil board featuring art by some of the greatest artists in Superman history or highly collectible inserts like “Classic Covers,” “Last Son of Krypton,” “World of Metropolis,” Truth, Justice, and a Batter Tomorrow” or the super rare “Powered by the Sun” cards, Fleer Brilliants Superman is the ultimate tribute to the Man of Steel and his friends, family, and foes.Head to upperdeckstore.com to start your collection, today!FURTHER VIEWINGMuch of what prompted our discussion about Clark Kent and Lois Lane actually getting down to business came from the radiation burns level hot chemistry that co-stars David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan have on screen in James Gunn's Superman (2025). You can now watch this on HBO Max if you need further proof. But also!Let's also refer you back to Richard Lester and Richard Donner's Superman II (1980) in which Clark (Christopher Reeve) temporarily gives up his powers to be with Lois (Margot Kidder) and there's a pretty sensual moment of the two of them in bed together in the Fortress of Solitude. That being said, Clark was a “normal man” there, but the fact that he had to give up his powers in order to get there might be an indication.Mid-1990s TV series Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman often featured their Lois (Teri Hatcher) and Clark (Dean Cain) in an ongoing will they/won't they fury of sexual tension (they eventually did). But the specific episode where they learn they can't have children together because of Clark's alien biology was the series finale, season 4, episode 22.And, of course, Smallville was a remarkably horny show and there's uh…several episodes dealing with the matter of Clark (Tom Welling) having sex with human women. But one in particular is season 7, episode 7, “Wrath” in which Lana Lang (Kristin Kreuk) gains powers so Clark doesn't have to worry about holding back. But the real fun with Smallville is the long and winding and horny journey, so feel free to just wallow in Clark's awkwardness throughout. We also have fun with the question of the “kryptonite condom” raised by Kevin Smith's slacker comedy classic Mallrats.FURTHER READINGDo you want to delve a little deeper into the facts, concepts, and stories Hakeem and Tamara referenced in today's episode? Of course you do! Man of Steel, Woman of KleenexYou think we're the first people to consider this topic? Famed sci-fi and fantasy author Larry Niven first tackled this topic way back in 1969 (nice!). It's available online to read here. And in the Comics…For more than half of Superman's published history, it was more or less implied that he was pretty chaste. Aside from the major romantic players in his life like Lana Lang and Lois Lane, Superman has at various times been intimate with Maxima (a powerful alien who sees Supes as perfect to have kids with), Wonder Woman (during DC's “New 52” era and a fling which is almost certainly no longer canon), and others. But the real progression of his romance with Lois Lane, which eventually leads to the birth of their son, Jon, began in the mid-90s and Jon's birth and its aftermath are depicted in the Convergence: Superman and Lois and Clark limited series by Dan Jurgens and Lee Weeks which are pretty much the starting point for their modern/current relationship.WANT MORE FROM DOES IT FLY?The companion piece to this episode is our much more family-friendly examination of the concept of Superman getting his powers from the yellow sun of Earth. And for something not remotely sexy, we looked at the horrifying reality of the Joker toxin from Batman (1989) here.FOLLOW US!Stay in the loop! In which the Mister joins me in reviewing SUPERMAN (2025), from writer/director James Gunn, based on characters created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. The film dives into the complexities of Clark Kent's (David Corenswet) dual life, exploring his struggle to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as he navigates his role as both a journalist and the Man of Steel. The film sees Superman facing unintended consequences after intervening in an international conflict, leading to a tarnished reputation and presenting his arch-nemesis Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) with an opportunity to exploit the situation. Ultimately, Superman must win back public trust and confront Luthor's schemes with the help of his colleagues at the Daily Planet and his loyal super-dog, Krypto. The film clocks in at 2 h and 9 m, is rated PG-13 and is still in theaters. (Cue the theme from The Super-Friends) Dusting off Sherman's and Mr. Peabody's Way-Back Machine, the guys revisit the GREAT Batman v Superman debate from an era when Mint Condition had four walls. To say that this special episode dives deeply into the various eras of the two most iconic fictional characters in all of comics would be a gross understatement of epic proportions! Suffice it to say that this "return" shines new lights and perceptions on who exactly are Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent. So much is discussed and disseminated in this episode, that itwould be a crime to reveal the contents and spoil your listeningenjoyment. And while the verbal repartee is measured and respectful, there are a few surprises contained herein that may shock and surprise. And as we now enter year five, I know I speak for all the MintFaithful in publicly thanking James Louie for the creation of thiswonderful digital forum that has kept the spirit of Mint Condition Comics alive. Whoever thought that comic books and CBM's, Star Trek and Star Wars, Magic The Gathering and Pokemon, science fiction and fantasy--and yes--baseball and hockey could engender a universe worth of conversations that would ultimately spark into creation a loving family of friends who always dared to dream? Thanks, James.

After an interminable half year of being spammed by this over-promoted battle between, directors Zack Snyder, of the previous DC comic book movies and his replacement, James Gunn, the movie itself is not actually any good. Just as goofy as the pre-release shots proclaimed it to be and too lightweight in all directions to build a universe off of. The irony is Snyder gave us Superman but no Clark Kent, whereas Gunn has given us Clark Kent and no Superman.

In this special crossover episode of Men of Steel, we kick off a two-part team-up with the Long Live the Legion podcast! We're diving into “Foundations,” the early 2000s arc from The Legion—with special guests Jim and Jay from LLtL and the artist of the arc himself, Chris Batista! Together, we explore Superman's legacy in the 31st century, the evolving identity of the Legion, and what it was like illustrating this future-forward storyline. Part 2 continues on Long Live the Legion—don't miss it! Overview Case Aiken introduces crossover episode, featuring Jmike Folson, Jim Fetters, Jay McKiernan, and Chris Batista discussing the Legion of Superheroes 'Foundations' arc, celebrating its 45th anniversary. The plot centers on Darkseid snatching people from time to harness dark matter, with the Legion uncovering Superboy during the investigation. DNA (Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning) established as the core writing team; their earlier success with Marvel's cosmic stories enhances credibility. Chris Batista expresses concern over technology portrayal, advocating for a more advanced depiction of the Legion compared to Justice League. The Legion World headquarters is praised for its futuristic elements like replicated home worlds and teleportation gates. Despite rising sales and positive fan response, the series faced cancellation, causing frustration as issue 25 became the second-best selling of the series with a 25% readership increase. Character designs for the Servants of Darkness were mostly created by Chris Batista, with a conscious effort to maintain Kirby's aesthetic. Superboy's dual role as both Legion member and connection to Titans was anticipated, reflecting long-time fan expectations for character involvement. Kid Quantum is recognized as the first female leader of color in the Legion, showcasing character dynamics and development alongside Cosmic Boy. The evolution of Superboy's design aimed to match Teen Titans appearances, highlighting editorial influence on character aesthetics. Notes ️ Podcast Introduction and Setup (00:00 - 02:09) Case Aiken introduces the Men of Steel podcast crossover episode with Long Live the Legion podcast, featuring co-host Jmike Folson and guests Jim Fetters, Jay McKiernan, and artist Chris Batista. Discussion focuses on Legion of Superheroes 'Foundations' arc, specifically issue 25 which serves as both story continuation and 45th anniversary celebration. Chris Batista reveals behind-the-scenes details about working as lead artist on the arc, noting DC doesn't produce this Legion continuity anymore so he can speak freely. Story Overview and Context (02:09 - 09:54) Jmike Folson summarizes the Foundations plot: people being snatched from time by Darkseid to steal dark matter for restarting Apokolips, with Legion discovering Superboy during investigation of warp phantoms. DNA (Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning) established as the writing team, with connections drawn to their later successful Marvel cosmic work including Guardians of the Galaxy. Legion Lost miniseries and Legion Worlds established crucial backstory, with 25 issues of world-building leading to this commemorative arc. ️ Technology and World-Building Discussion (09:54 - 16:05) Chris Batista expresses frustration with Paul Levitz rejecting advanced technology concepts for Legion, arguing they should appear far more advanced than Justice League. Legion World headquarters praised as major advancement - a planet with replicated home worlds and teleportation gates, making Legion feel appropriately futuristic. Discussion of how DNA run embraced technological advancement while previous runs kept Legion at similar tech level to 20th century heroes. Character Design and Development (01:01:03 - 01:24:10) Chris reveals Servants of Darkness designs were largely his creation except for Orion, with specific mentions of including Firestorm, White Martian, Lobo, Green Lantern, and Big Barda. Orion design intentionally modeled after Destroyer from Thor, maintaining Kirby aesthetic while creating intimidating servant appearance. Invisible Kid and Brainiac 5 romantic moment revealed as editor Steve Wacker's spontaneous addition 'just to mess with fans' - became lasting fan discussion point. Publishing History and Cancellation (01:24:16 - 01:59:06) Series cancellation explained as sudden higher-up decision despite rising sales and positive fan response to Superboy addition. Issue 25 was second-best selling of entire series with 25% increase in readership, making cancellation timing particularly frustrating. Original plans included Superboy remaining in both Legion and Titans simultaneously, with extensive story arcs planned for Element Lad return and Lightning Lad separation. Artist Collaboration and Creative Process (20:40 - 01:19:06) Chris describes working relationship with DNA as collaborative, with writers trusting him to design new characters like Legion cadets and including Easter eggs like Kent Shakespeare and Polar Boy. Multiple pencillers used for issue 25 to handle commemorative scope, with each artist assigned specific character groups to avoid overlap. Coloring technology evolution discussed, with modern computer coloring providing more tools but potentially reducing creative necessity of older 64-color process limitations. ⏳ Superman Connection and Time Travel Elements (34:02 - 01:54:06) Clark Kent and 90s Superboy both featured as characters pulled from time, with Clark becoming servant of darkness while Superboy joins Legion. Superboy wears classic costume with Legion belt buckle addition, fulfilling long-time fan expectations while serving story purposes. Time dilation plot involves universe getting smaller and past being erased, though hosts acknowledge the temporal mechanics don't fully make sense. Character Relationships and Dynamics (46:03 - 01:30:24) Mech (Lightning Lord) rehabilitation storyline discussed as more complex than typical villain treatment, showing struggle between evil nature and love for siblings. Kid Quantum established as Legion's first female leader of color, with organic romantic relationship with Cosmic Boy developing throughout arc. Livewire/Element Lad fusion creates extremely powerful character combining lightning abilities with matter transmutation in crystalline body. Technical and Production Details (01:36:23 - 01:51:38) Secret Files issue placement in continuity questioned due to timeline inconsistencies with main story events. Chris notes Superboy's physical design evolution throughout arc as editorial mandated size increases to match Teen Titans appearance. Force field technology and advanced Legion equipment discussed as properly futuristic elements that should distinguish team from contemporary heroes.

Send us a textLong before superhero shows dominated television on the CW, Smallville pioneered the genre with its fresh take on Superman's origin story. The show's ambitious approach - following Clark Kent through his formative years before donning the iconic cape and costume - created a blueprint that countless superhero series would later follow.Diving into Season One feels like opening a time capsule from 2001. The soundtrack filled with Lifehouse, Papa Roach, and Sum 41 instantly transports you back to a simpler era of television storytelling. What makes this first season fascinating is watching the creators experiment with format and tone - establishing the "freak of the week" structure while gradually building deeper character arcs that would eventually span the show's impressive ten-season run.Michael Rosenbaum's portrayal of Lex Luthor stands as one of the show's greatest achievements. His nuanced performance creates a character both sympathetic and dangerous, establishing a complex friendship with Clark that viewers know is destined for tragedy. Equally impressive is the Kent family dynamic, with John Schneider and Annette O'Toole delivering what many consider the definitive portrayal of Superman's adoptive parents. Their unwavering moral guidance provides the emotional foundation that shapes Clark's journey toward becoming a hero. The early meteor rock mythology (they don't even call it kryptonite yet!) creates both a narrative engine for weekly adventures and a compelling metaphor for teenage transformation. Each "meteor freak" represents different aspects of adolescent anxiety - fears about appearance, acceptance, and identity that resonate beyond the superhero trappings. These episodes may seem formulaic now, but they established crucial building blocks for the epic story that would unfold over the next decade.Have you revisited Smallville recently? We'd love to hear how it holds up for you after all these years. Superman (2025): Ethics, Hope, and the Power of Choice • A Special Hiatus EpisodeMatthew and Riki welcome frequent guest Jessica Plummer to a discussion of James Gunn's take on Superman, exploring how this version challenges both the character and audiences to think differently about power, responsibility, and hope.Key Ethical Questions We ExploreShould Superman intervene in international conflicts? The hosts examine the film's most compelling scene: Lois Lane's hard-hitting interview with Superman about his decision to stop a military invasion. This sequence raises fundamental questions about sovereignty, journalism, and the responsibility that comes with ultimate power. The discussion reveals how the film sits in the tension between idealism and pragmatism, ultimately landing on Superman's simple but powerful argument: "People are dying."What makes this Superman different from previous versions? Unlike other portrayals that emphasize Superman's alien heritage as a source of wisdom, this film flips the script. Here, Krypton's message promotes authoritarian rule, making Superman's choice to embrace the values taught by Martha and Jonathan Kent entirely his own decision. This shift gives Clark Kent true agency as a hero, something the hosts argue has been missing from previous films. What role should journalism play in holding heroes accountable? Lois Lane's portrayal as an investigative journalist who challenges Superman creates a fascinating dynamic. The hosts discuss how her questions—while sometimes cynical—ultimately make Superman a better hero, and how their relationship models the importance of being challenged by those we love and respect. For fans of ethical philosophy, superhero narratives, or anyone interested in how entertainment shapes our moral imagination, this episode provides both entertainment and genuine food for thought about what it means to be good in a complicated world.Regular Episodes Return in September! **************************************************************************This episode is a production of Superhero Ethics, a The Ethical Panda Podcast and part of the TruStory FM Entertainment Podcast Network. Happy Tuesday! With a new version of Superman hitting movie theaters, I was so happy to chat with one of my favorite Men of Steel this week - you guys, it's Brandon Routh! You know Brandon from playing Clark Kent/Superman in Superman Returns. He also played Daniel Shaw on Chuck, Todd Ingram in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World and Ray Palmer/The Atom across the Berlanti Arrow Universe. We talk about this in the interview, but I feel like Brandon's version of Superman maybe didn't get the appreciation it deserved at the time. It was interesting to talk with him about living up to the legacy of Christopher Reeve and how it feels to watch David Corenswet wear the blue cape. We also discuss how Brandon was able to find closure by playing Superman again in the 2019 Arrowverse crossover event “Crisis on Infinite Earths.” I really enjoyed this conversation and Brandon is such a lovely, grounded guy. I can't wait to see him in his new film Ick, directed by one of my favorite directors Joseph Kahn (who also directed me in the short Power/Rangers). Be sure to stick around after the interview for the hindsight, straight from a hotel in Vancouver. Smallville did a hell of a job reinstablishing the origins of Clark Kent/Superman as well building it's own law that's become canon across other DC Universes including Superman in the DCU. Here we look at the pilot episode, a Christopher Reeve cameo episode plus the two hour series finale that wrapped up it's incredible 10 season run. Plus we get into the freak of the week trope, the lack of an actual Superman costume or apperance, it's continuation in the CW with Crisis on Infinate Earths, Season 11 and the potential upcoming animated series.
