How to Talk to Your Kids About Porn With children being exposed to porn as early as 10 today, Braxton, teaches us how to deal with pornography and kids. He defines porn as content that is intentionally created for a sexual purpose like arousal. For many parents, the task may seem daunting and confusing to broach. In this episode, Braxton takes us by the hand and explains exactly what we need to do to raise healthy, aware and responsible children. His advice is to start by knowing your own parameters and values. The journey starts as early as the infant stage where we are encouraged to use the correct terms for body parts. With many kids having access to electronic devices, Braxton expresses how important it is to create a system for your child to respond correctly to unexpected, inappropriate material. He suggests explaining to your kids as young as 6, that if they do come across any naked people on their screens, to call you instead of getting curious and clicking on it. The C’s Talking to your child openly and ensuring that your child knows that they will not get into trouble, helps them approach you therefore Braxton encourages communication. Curiosity comes up as a common thread with children, and we are encouraged to teach them how to respond to that. Braxton explains the three C’s about why your child may look at pornography: – Clicking (accidental) – Curiosity – Coping As parents, he suggests we respond with these three C’s and explains these in more detail: – Stay Curious – Stay Connected – Stay Calm Teens Dealing with teens requires a specific approach, as many parents may already have discovered. We learn that approaching teens openly and explaining your rationale to them in line with your values as opposed to dictating to them, works best. While teens are in an exploratory phase, parents may encounter teens using porn for masturbation. Braxton gives us a helpful way to gently correct this while ensuring your teen can still explore their sexual impulses. Being responsible and not shaming your kids when they enter this phase of their lives is key to keeping an open line of communication and being there to help them into adulthood. Background Braxton Duston , LCSW, CST is the Clinical Director at The Healing Group in Salt Lake City Utah. He is also host of the Birds and Bees Podcast. Thank you for Clicking this podcast episode! Today I discuss a topic that I actually talked about in 1 of the 1st ever Alpha Podcasts. Social Media has a bunch of reasons to dislike it or to not use it. its not new that depression or suicide can be caused from social media. People are assholes & can use social media as a way to spread negativity which causes others to feel insecure, sad, confused, etc.. I learned one day from Gary Vee that social media is honestly not the problem if you really look at the source of where it starts. Where it starts is with US(Human beings). Taking self responsibility is not part of the "equation" for some reason but it is our actions in which we go on social media, Social media does not change anyone, just EXPOSES. Ive personally have been taking a break from social media & have honestly been feeling stronger mentally. At times I'd feel discouraged looking at other people "Live life" so not focusing on social media has been a better path for me. Thank you &hope you enjoy --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/ricardo-ortiz2/support
Every. Single. Week!!!!!!!! We always miss the big news of the week by about 10 minutes. Maybe should start recording later! Anyway, Billy and The Krav are here to talk about their league winning drafts, so deep fliers that can potentially win you leagues, and awful takes about Leonard Fournette because WE WERE 10 MINUTES TOO LATE!!! Listen, won't you?
The third principle of the Agile Manifesto tells us to deliver working software frequently. This step is an essential factor in satisfying the customer. While we want to avoid the "are we there yet?" approach to delivering a solution, incremental is valuable. When we take this principle to heart, we provide confidence in our progress, along with opportunities for feedback. Therefore, we need to look at this closer for small and large applications. Deliver working software frequently, from a couple of weeks to a couple of months, with a preference to the shorter timescale. Deliver Working Software Frequently These four words are sometimes easier said than done. The implementation phase is dynamic by definition. We should be steadily making changes as we march towards completion. The idea of frequent milestones of working software may seem antithetical to this process. Likewise, regular deployments can be time-consuming. That adds time to our schedule. However, we can plan for this and find ways to make this a worthwhile investment. Checkpoints and Testing When we look only at the cost of deployment, we miss the point. This principle tackles the problem of communicating with the customer and building their confidence in our solution. It also forces us to test integrations and processes that can be costly to fix at the end of the implementation period. It is well-documented that bugs cost more the later they are found. When we include deployments early and often, we are building in some testing and sanity checks. This deliverable can highlight flaws and bugs that otherwise would be far more expensive to address. We can even respond to customer requests that might be too costly to handle late in implementation. There are architecture assumptions that may need to be altered based on the end-user experience. Early deliverables can bring those to the surface when a change is cheap and easy. The Elusive User Experience UX is a hot topic in software. Correspondingly, some people are very good at crafting a sublime user experience. On the other hand, customers can be picky or finicky. Thus, the best validation of our UX is the stamp of the customer. The only way to test this out "in the wild" is to provide deliverables the users can work with. Clicking around and "imagining" how it will work is not the same as concrete functionality. When we deliver working software frequently, we provide the customer with a practical example to review. I can barely keep up.But it hasn’t been an easy journey, battling disordered eating in her 20s, as well as weathering through a ferocious social media storm that almost ended her career. Lola gets candid about embracing failure, why women have an unhealthy relationship with food, self love and self worth, dating narcissists, the fickle world of fame and social media, why she swears by therapy and why it’s essential every one of us find our purpose. You will probably be able to tell while listening to this interview, but I loved my chat with Lola, I hope you enjoy it too.You can follow Lola hereCheck out her podcast Fearlessly Failing here and get your hands on a copy of her books hereConnect with me: @elizabethanileLemonade has its own Instagram account chock-a-block full of self love inspo - follow here!Your support of Lemonade helps it grow and allows me to spend time finding awesome guests to share with you. These are the kinds of questions Melanie Dimmitt asked herself when her 6 month old son Arlo was diagnosed with cerebral palsy:Why has this happened to me?Will I ever stop comparing my child to typical children? How will my relationship survive? Will I be able to work again?Should I have another baby? And the big one: What will my future look like? It’s also the internal dialogue that prompted her to reach out to other parents with children with disabilities. She wanted to hear from those with lived experience about how to navigate this new life, and ultimately seek the reassurance she was craving that one day, it will all be okay. But what Melanie learnt through these conversations, combined with her own experience parenting her beautiful baby boy, was that life was going to be better than okay. Her little family was about to embark on a life, and a love, better than she could ever have imagined. These interviews culminated in a book, Special, a beautifully uplifting, relatable and honest roadmap for other parents in the early stages of learning the ropes of raising a child with a disability. It’s an incredible read - and one that’s changed the course for so many parents of children with all abilities. There is so much I learnt in this chat, I hope you feel as enriched by it as I did.You can follow Melanie hereGet your hands on a copy of SpecialConnect with me: @elizabethanileLemonade now has its own Instagram account chock-a-block full of self love inspo - follow here!Your support of Lemonade helps it grow and allows me to spend time finding awesome guests to share with you. Mitch McPherson’s entire world was upended when at the beginning of 2013, his 18 year old brother Ty took his own life.Immersed in grief, he decided the least he could do was try and keep Ty’s name alive, so, he traced a simple drawing of a pair of shorts, as his little brother was always dressed in footy shorts, along with the words speak up, stay chatty with the TY at the end of 'chatty' capitalised.Mitch had no idea this simple sketch would be the catalyst for the creation of one of the most acclaimed suicide prevention and mental health promotion programs in the country. This is an incredible story of vulnerability, strength and the undying love of one man for his little brother, a young life gone far too soon. More than 3000 Australians take their life every year, 75% of those male. Heartbreakingly, suicide is the leading cause of death for people aged between 15 and 44, that's why movements like Stay Chatty are so vitally important. Mitch's work has saved lives. In this chat, Mitch and I discuss: his new role as a father to his beautiful little daughter, the impact losing his brother has had on how he'll raise her, how we should be raising young men in today's world by teaching them to be vulnerable, Speak Up Stay Chatty's humble beginnings and how it's grown to what it is today.A trigger warning - this conversation addresses suicide. If you, or anyone you know needs help, 24 hour crisis support is available through Lifeline on 13 11 14.You can follow Mitch here and Speak Up Stay Chatty here, and check out their website here.Take a look at Mitch's autobiography "Behind the Smile" here.Get in touch with me: @elizabethanileLemonade now has its own Instagram account chock-a-block full of self love inspo - follow here!Your support of Lemonade helps it grow and allows me to spend time finding awesome guests to share with you. Lisa Cox was living a life just like so many others her age. She was 24, climbing the corporate ladder in the advertising world, she’d travelled the globe, moved to Melbourne, when she unexpectedly suffered a brain haemorrhage. She spent the next three weeks in a coma, two months on life support, and over the course of a year in hospital had pneumonia, two heart attacks, seizures, open-heart surgery, had to have one leg and all of her toes and nine fingertips amputated, a total hip replacement and died twice. Her family was told they’d likely have to turn off her life support but something incredible happened. Lisa’s brain started to recharge, regenerating every single cell in her body. The mammoth toll this all took on her body has impacted her speech and memory, left her 25% blind and epileptic with osteoarthritis in almost every joint. She had to relearn to do everything; feed herself, dress herself, speak, write, all of the things we take for granted every day. But, despite all of this, Lisa refused to let life defeat her. Instead, she saw it an opportunity to start over, to rebuild her life from the ground up, a chance to use her story to inspire others to dig deep when life throws you lemons, to live life on your own terms. She’s now a public speaker, author, disability advocate, model and all round one of the most inspiring humans I’ve ever met.You can follow Lisa here.Get in touch with me: @elizabethanileLemonade now has its own Instagram account chock-a-block full of self love inspo - follow here!Your support of Lemonade helps it grow and allows me to spend time finding awesome guests to share with you. To support this ministry financially, visit: https://www.oneplace.com/donate/1085/29 Its a sad fact of life, wherever theres money, theres a scammer trying to take it away. Con artists are now going after people who may already be in financial trouble. The target? Stimulus checks. Scammers constantly change their tactics to match conditions. With trillions in coronavirus relief funds going out, theyve adapted to this new environment. Today, host Rob West tells you how to protect yourself. Then its your calls at 800-525-7000. According to the Federal Trade Commission, con artists are concentrating on college students and nursing home residents, but theyre also trying to victimize individuals receiving unemployment benefits and small business loans. In just a few months Americans have lost more than $40 million to these con artists with an average loss of around $450. One targets college students with fake emails that appear to come from school officials. Students are urged to view a message about their COVID-19 stimulus checks and provided with a link that requires their school login. Scammers capture that and use it to access other personal information for potential identity fraud. Clicking the link may also download malware onto students devices. The FTC is warning that some nursing homes and assisted living facilities are trying to get their hands on residents stimulus checks. They tell the elderly receiving Medicaid benefits to sign their checks over to the facility because its entitled to them. There are many other types of coronavirus scams in play right now and the IRS is warning all taxpayers, Social Security recipients and others to be especially vigilant for them. Always verify web addresses. You can do that by manually typing them into your web browser's address field. If a website claims to act as an intermediary between you and the IRS to facilitate processing your stimulus payment, dont use it. Its a scam outfit trying to get your personal financial information. If you receive a phone call with an automated message concerning your stimulus check just hang up. The IRS always communicates by regular mail, first. Never give your personal information to anyone claiming to be from the IRS, another government agency, or business. Beware of stimulus checks offered by anyone other than the Treasury Department. Dont accept or deposit them. On todays program we also answer your questions: I am a Christian and I am on hard times. I go to a small church and they are not really able to help me. Should I look into going to a different church for help? I was automatically put into the 401K plan at my job instead of the pension plan. Now I am having to pay a lump sum to get into the pension plan. Is it worth it? I am 21 years old and I have 40K of debt, student loans and car debt. What is the best way to get rid of this debt? I dont have any credit on my name right now. I would like to buy a home. What is the best way to change this? I am 60 years old and I just started a new job. After 90 days, the employer will match 3% of a 401k. Should I go with this plan or should I do my own Roth IRA or regular CD? Any other business Error feedback from show notes Most of the shows we process require us to make some level of modifications to get them posted. This ranges from fixing tags to a complete rewrite of the shownotes, or verifying whether intros were actually added or not. Each modification that we make means that it requires more human intervention and prevents us from being able to completely automate the upload process. In addition there is a non trivial amount of time needed to "fix" these issues. This can range from a few minutes to an hour or more per show, and with 260 shows a year this mounts up. We normally don't contact hosts about these issues as it is usually quicker to fix the issues than composing emails, and waiting for the reply that may never come. For the most part our experience has been that hosts are more than willing to fix these issues if they are aware of them. As part of the ongoing steps toward automation, would hosts be open to the idea of getting a processing report once we have posted the show? This would list all the issues the test tools found and the steps that we needed to take to rectify them. Making changes to shows after upload Sometimes an error or omission in notes for an HPR episode isn't noticed until the show is posted to the site. In recent times a few hosts have sent in their changes by way of comments. This is not ideal: There's a limit on how much text a comment can hold The comment form has a nasty habit of stripping backslashes, so code corrections can be messed up We don't put comments on the show's page on archive.org, so such corrections will not be seen by people reading the notes there The HPR admins would prefer changes to be sent in the form of emails to admin at hackerpublicradio.org. They will then be applied to the show notes and the archive.org version updated in step. Tags and Summaries Thanks to the following contributor for sending in updates in the past month: Windigo Over the period tags and/or summaries have been added to 10 shows which were without them. If you would like to contribute to the tag/summary project visit the summary page at https://hackerpublicradio.org/report_missing_tags.php and follow the instructions there.

In this audio interview, CoinDesk’s Leigh Cuen and adult content creator Allie Awesome talk about payments and money in the sex industry, especially the trends impacted by the coronavirus crisis. From how porn performers and entrepreneurs deal with Bitcoin Twitter to the ways the pandemic changed our digital sex lives, Cuen and Allie explore what actually drives demand for censorship-resistant systems. This episode is sponsored by Bitstamp and Ciphertrace. The biggest problem? Allie and other performers and sex workers basically have their digital advertising and distribution platforms controlled by third parties that aren’t responsible to the workers. For example, OnlyFans briefly froze Allie’s account earlier this year. Although she regained access, her distribution conduits remain at the mercy of tech platforms. This is where peer-to-peer transactions come in. Allie said she knows how to use a cryptocurrency wallet and would gladly do so if more customers wanted to pay her directly. The fact is those customers are few and far between.“To those people who want to come up with a solution, my first question is ‘well, are you paying for porn’?” she said. “I think a lot of people want to make money off of ‘adult’, but they aren’t really willing to invest in ‘adult’”.See also: Why Lightning Payments Aren’t Clicking for Porn Companies (Just Yet)Another major issue according to Allie, is an increase in traffic or visibility doesn’t always translate to profits. Plus, many crypto fans see her industry as something they want to profit from, by building their own tech solutions, rather than contribute to experienced performers. Compared to other bitcoin or ether holders, sex workers are even more likely to rely on social networks like Twitter than exchanges like Coinbase, which deplatforms them just like Paypal. Performers require either a high degree of technical skill, to use decentralized exchange (DEX) platforms like Bisq, or a de facto social liquidity network in order to use cryptocurrency without trusting third parties. Allie shares why she is excited about cryptocurrency, even if it’s a challenge to use it for censorship resistance.

The other day -- in the middle of #Riots2020 and #GeorgeFloyedProtests -- on Twitter, "WWJD" -- "What Would Jesus Do" -- was trending. Considering that I had used that phrase a few years ago a lot, it piqued my curiosity. Clicking on to it, I was shocked to see people saying that Jesus would do the same thing -- destroy property to prove a point or injustice -- because He had cleared the Temple in Jerusalem. Stop right there! I didn't respond then, because I didn't have time to get into a Twitter argument. Plus, it takes much more explaining than just 280 characters.... Happy Thursday! In this week's ep I chat about why we should never settle for anything less than we deserve in every area of our life.I discuss the reasons we could be settling, why it's important to delve into the why behind thinking we don't deserve any better, I ask you to challenge the patriarchal bullshit that has us believing we as women are the problem because we're too picky and therefore should lower our standards, what happens when we accept mediocrity as the benchmark of which we live our life, I tell my own stories of settling and how that impacted me, the role self worth plays in settling, and I also pass on some practical advice to help you work out if you're accepting less than you deserve.I'm pretty passionate about this one because I have so many women messaging me who are so sick and tired of being alone, they're desperate to settle for the next thing that comes along that's "good enough" and it always makes me so sad.We are all worthy of a life that fills us with heart-expanding joy, alignment, love and purpose and anything less than that will sentence our soul to suffer a slow death. Happy Thursday! For this week's episode, I discuss patterns, using my own example of something that happened to me recently where I watched my old-programmed patterning play out in front of my eyes.We all have a programmed set of beliefs and responses, shaped by conditioning, traumas, past experiences. The question is whether they are useful or are they holding you back from reaching your potential? Have you outgrown what once served you? Are you ready to be released from their grip hold and usher in a new way of thinking, responding and therefore living?I chat about what patterns are, where they come from, their purpose, how they can keep us trapped, getting curious about our individual programming, tapping into our higher self/inner knowing, a useful mantra and strategies to become aware of your patterning and let them go.With all this kind of stuff, I'm no professional, I'm just sharing my experience in the hope it'll be helpful for you too. So please, consult a therapist if you've got questions or need some assistance. This is a VERY special edition of The Midweek Squeeze because it's my 30th birthday today!I LOVE my birthday because it's filled with so much love and family and friends and good food and fun times. But with each birthday, and particularly a milestone like this one, I tend to get super reflective and use it to re-evaluate what's changed since this time last year, unpack what I've learnt, how I've grown, and ultimately how I want to feel, achieve, call into my life the next time my birthday rolls around. To mark the occasion, and as a form of catharsis for me, I thought I'd collate the 30 main lessons I've learnt during my 3 decades on earth. Of course, this list is evolving, and there are probably way more I could've included, but I guess they'll have to wait until the 40 lessons I've learnt by the time I'm 40 edition.I hope you get something out of this one!Connect with me @elizabethanileLemonade now has its own Instagram account chock-a-block full of self love inspo - follow here!Your support of Lemonade helps it grow and allows me to spend time finding awesome guests to share with you. For as long as comedian Bianka Thompson can remember, alcohol was a constant in her life. But what was once a way to unwind and have a good time escalated to the point she was spending half her waking life drinking and the other half thinking about the next time she could get wasted. In Bianka’s mind, there was nothing wrong with her excessive alcohol consumption. She was young, fun, enjoying her life, everyone drinks, it’s the Australian thing to do, there was no harm in it. Or was there?Bianka’s wake up call came when she realised the severe affect it was having on her marriage, her health, and ultimately, her life. Now 10 months sober, and feeling happier and healthier than ever before, she’s made it her life mission to help open the eyes of other young Australian men and women, duped by the alcohol industry into believing we have to drink, and we have to drink hard, to have a good time.Bianka’s experience inspired her to co-host a miniseries as part of her podcast, We Want To Be Better about her relationship with alcohol, how it impacts every facet of our lives, along with interviews with experts in the field.Bianka is a delight - I hope you enjoy this chat. Here she is.Follow Bianka - @itsbiankabitchCheck out Bianka's podcast - We Want To Be BetterThis is the book that Bianka says changed her life - This Naked Mind by Annie GraceConnect with me @elizabethanileLemonade now has its own Instagram account chock-a-block full of self love inspo - follow here!Your support of Lemonade helps it grow and allows me to spend time finding awesome guests to share with you. There are a couple of different ways to approach building a Power App... and I am not referring to Canvas vs. Model-Driven here, but rather, the environment type. Today, you can build a Power App on either a "vanilla" CDS environment, or on a Dynamics 365 CDS environment. Why does it matter? Vanilla Let's quickly discuss the Vanilla approach as it is the safest, which I will explain why later. If you log into the Power Platform Admin Center you will be presented with a list of Environments that you have in place. If you have Dynamics 365, any of those environments will also be listed, otherwise these will all be what I call "Vanilla" environments. Clicking on the + New button, will start you on a path of creating yet another Vanilla Environment. If all you have is Power Apps licensing, then all of your environments will be Vanilla. What is Vanilla? A Vanilla CDS Environment will contain a basic data model, including Contacts, Accounts and few other items. It is meant to be extended by you to meet your needs for a Power App you want to create. It is a perfect solution for moving a Speadsheet based process into a "real" app. Or for possibly replacing some basic point solutions. But what if you also have Dynamics 365, and want to build a specific limited purpose app using the data that resides in that Environment? Apps on D365 Dynamics 365 CRM apps are basically just great big Power Apps. You could build your own app, to do something particular for a certain set of users, and it would appear in the App list, right next to Enterprise Sales for example. Why might you consider this? Let's take an example of a part of your business that uses Dynamics 365. Let's say this department uses the Contacts and Accounts entities, but it also uses a few custom entities that you created for some specific purpose. One reason to consider building a Power App is that you can create a highly targeted application just for those users, that includes only what they need, and nothing more. Another reason is that you could potentially reduce your licensing costs... significantly. License Tightrope When you build a Power App on top of a Dynamics 365 environment, you have access to all of the entities in that environment, including of course any custom ones you created. If you were to pull into your app Contacts and Accounts and your custom entities, you are potentially creating an app that could run on a $10 App Pass instead of a full user license. But if you also decided to pull in the Case entity, for example, you would see a message that this entity is restricted. You can still use it, and it may still make sense to create a targeted app for some purpose, but you will not be able to use the lower cost licenses for these users. Restricted Entities Some of the entities that are in a Dynamics 365 environment are "Restricted", there is a list of them here. Why are they restricted? Microsoft has given you the ability to build a Model-Driven Power App, ostensibly, to build simple apps. However, there is no limit on how complex your app can become, it is only limited by your knowledge and ability. With a much lower cost, many are taking a hard look at how they are using the Dynamics 365 apps, and some are opting to just build their own "Sales" app for example. Not only can they eliminate all of the features they are not using with a skinnier app, but they could potentially reduce their license costs, as long as you avoid the Restricted entity trapdoors. More Restricted Entities Coming... eventually Microsoft announced in October, and Charles Lamanna confirmed publicly on my podcast in September, that more entities will be tagged as restricted. But as of today, we still don't know which ones. Meaning we have been building within the boundaries, but at some point the boundary will be moved. That will not be a good day, if something that we used, suddenly gets tagged as "restricted". Why Restricted? Microsoft needs to protect their first-party app revenue, this is understood and reasonable. If I had P&L responsibility for one of the first-party apps, I would be concerned about Power Apps cannibalizing some of my users. But restricting access to a few random entities is a bad way to approach that. Previously there was a rule that you could not "replicate the functionality" of the first-party apps, but they removed that rule so Power Apps would not die a quick death. So, while I can't use a restricted entity in my app without triggering a higher license cost, I am free to build my own custom entity, right next to the restricted one and use that. So is this the perfect solution? Well, that depends on the trajectory of the customer. If at some point in the future they want to move to the full first-party apps, and have been using a custom entity for some OOB feature, they will have to migrate data. Or, if they have a mix of users, some on first-party and some on a Power App, this would also be problematic. So the restricting of entities does not protect the first-party apps, it just creates future frustration for customers. A Better Idea? As I was writing this post, a fellow long-time MVP floated the same idea I was planning to write here. Basically the value of the first-party apps is not in the data model, as I said I am free to replicate that, and it is not even hard to do. Protecting an app by creating a potential "pain in the ass" scenario in the future is not a good idea, as most customers will not realize that until later. The real value of the first party apps is in the logic layer, not the data model. In particular where Microsoft has made some proprietary logic part of their app. Also, app specific features like plugins, or behind the scenes processes like Lead qualification, or SLA management. These are things that are not only valuable, but more difficult to replicate. If I were able to use a restricted entity, like Case for example, I would have no reason to create my own. If at some point that customer wanted to move up to the full Customer Service app, it would be a simple license swapping process, instead they may consider staying put, if the hassle is too high. This would be the opposite of what Microsoft's first-party teams would like to see happen. I have customers in that very predicament right now. Restricting entities was a down-and-dirty, lazy way to solve this problem. Hopefully Microsoft will come up with a better approach soon.
[Rough Transcript of this week's episode] Welcome to Business with Purpose - I am your host, Molly Stillman of stillbeingmolly.com and this show is all about bringing you the stories behind the brands, companies, and small businesses that are changing the world. Each week I interview an entrepreneur, a CEO, non-profit director, community leader, or just all-around amazing person who is trying to make a positive impact not only through their personal life, but also with their career. My goal is to show you that no matter what you do for a living, you can make an impact right where you are… This is episode 180 which means it is time for another SOLO episode! I love connecting with you in a little bit of a different way during these solo episodes to either answer a burning question that you have, talking about a timely topic, or educating you on something that I think might be helpful… So this week, I am doing a little combination of answering a frequently asked question and doing a little education. One question I have received often is, “There are so many buzzwords and phrases thrown around like “ethical fashion” “fair trade” “conscious consumerism” “social enterprise” etc….. WHAT DO THEY ALL MEAN? What is the difference? So today, I am going to be like your own personal Webster’s Dictionary: ethical edition and share some of the terminologies with you that you might hear on this podcast or out in the world and what it is they mean! A couple of things I wanted to share with you before we go over the terms and definitions… After over 3.5 years of doing this podcast, I continue to be blown away by your encouragement and support. I know I can talk all day about this show, but I wanted you the listener to hear from FELLOW LISTENERS on which episode is THEIR favorite and why they love the show… so here are a few: [TUNE IN TO LISTEN TO THE LISTENER TESTIMONIALS!] What Does "Conscious Consumerism Mean?" and More... All your ethical terminologies explained! Conscious consumerism Conscious consumerism is a way of saying that we are able to retain the awareness of our purchasing power no matter what is going on in the world around us. ... The conscious consumer is one that seeks out ways to make positive decisions on what they buy, and solutions to the negative impacts caused by consumerism. Fair trade vs. fairtrade When used as "fair trade," as two words rather than one, this refers to the general movement advocating for trade on fair terms for the environment and people involved. However, the largest and most globally recognized fair trade organization is Fairtrade International, the umbrella organization of the international system that our partner Fairtrade America belongs to. Listen to episode Episode 139 with Marc Choyt - right around the 31:50 mark we talk briefly about this! Ethically made / ethical fashion Ethical fashion is an umbrella term that includes fashion design, production, retail, and purchasing. The exact definition is vague but overall ethical fashion is understood to indicate an active approach to creating goods that positively impact the environment and the lives of those making them, reducing poverty through non-exploitative (fair pay, good conditions) employment. In reality, it’s virtually impossible for a brand creating new products from new materials to ever be completely ethical as it just does not positively impact the environment. It is, however, a good reference point for brands to have in an attempt to better their production practices. Zero wasteZero Waste is a set of principles focused on waste prevention that encourages the redesign of resource life cycles so that all products are reused. Social enterprise A social enterprise is an organization that applies commercial strategies to maximize improvements in financial, social and environmental well-being—this may include maximizing social impact alongside profits for co-owners. Slow fashion As you would expect, slow fashion is the opposite of fast fashion. It’s about rejecting consumeristic impulses and embracing a slower, more mindful model of consumerism. While this doesn’t eradicate shopping entirely, it refers to only buying things you actually need and items of quality that will last. Circular fashion Circular fashion refers to the entire lifecycle of a product and centers on a circle of create, use, recycle, rather than create, use, dispose. It looks at products beyond their original function and timespan and focuses on how their materials can be consistently utilized and repurposed. Circular fashion takes in to consideration everything including the design, sourcing, transportation, storage, marketing, sale and disposal of the product. Closed loop In fashion it means that all new clothes are made from preexisting clothes and textiles, The Guardian explains. Once an item has fulfilled its use, it can be broken down through an environmentally sound process and turned back into yarn/fabric and then recycled into another garment. This forms a “closed loop” in that an item would have an eternal life cycle and therefore eliminate waste. Cruelty free Cruelty-free means that companies did not test ingredients or products on animals during the production phase. Cruelty-free, therefore, also means that no animals were killed or harmed anywhere in the world during production. Items that meet this standard normally carry a heart symbol. Cruelty-free does not mean, however, that animal ingredients are avoided. Eco friendly Eco-friendly, like sustainability, is an all encompassing term that takes many factors into account. “Eco” is short for ecology, the study of interaction between organisms and the environment. Therefore, eco-friendly is about minimizing anything that would negatively affect that balance. Fast fashion Fast fashion is the term used to describe clothing that is produced quickly and cheaply. Brands and retailers that engage in fast fashion often create products based on seasonal trends directly inspired by the runway. Fast fashion brands are generally associated with overproduction, low retail prices, mass waste, poor working conditions, and negative environmental impact. FSC certified If an item is FSC-certified it means that the fabric is made from tree fibers that come from sustainable sources in that they do not originate from endangered or ancient forests. TENCEL and MONOCEL products, for example, are often made from FSC certified eucalyptus and bamboo. Living wage Paying someone a living wage is to pay workers from all aspects of the production process a fair salary so they are not trapped in poverty. A living wage varies greatly from country to country and that is also taken into consideration. Organic Standards differ as to what “organic” means from country to country but generally speaking, organic fashion refers to the materials used and how they’re grown. Basically this means that the materials are grown without the use of pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, genetically-modified organisms (GMOs), sewage sludge, ionizing radiation, or other chemicals. Social responsibility Social responsibility means that a company adheres to a business framework that values people and the planet as well as profit. It’s about benefiting local communities and their environment. Unfortunately, brands claiming social responsibility can’t always be taken at face value. This term is often used in greenwashing. WRAP certified Worldwide Responsible Accredited Production (WRAP), formerly Worldwide Responsible Apparel Production, is a not-for-profit 501(c)(6) organization dedicated to promoting safe, lawful, humane and ethical manufacturing around the world through certification and education. The WRAP certification program mainly focuses on the apparel, footwear and sewn products sectors. Certified B CorpB Corporation certification is a private certification issued to for-profit companies by B Lab, a global nonprofit organization with offices in the United States, Europe, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and a partnership in Latin America with Sistema B. To be granted and to preserve certification, companies must receive a minimum score on an online assessment for "social and environmental performance." Okay! That’s it!
