It's Hump Day! Emma speaks with Cole Stangler, France-based journalist covering politics, housing, and labor, author of the book Paris Is Not Dead: Surviving Hypergentrification In The City Of Light, to discuss the recent developments after the French elections, and the government's efforts to form a coalition. Then, she speaks with Michael Brenes, historian at Yale, author of the Warfare and Welfare newsletter on SubStack, author of the upcoming book The Rivalry Peril: How Great-Power Competition Threatens Peace And Weakens Democracy, co-authored with Van Jackson, to discuss his recent piece in the Boston Review entitled "The Harris Doctrine." First, Emma runs through updates on Jack Smith's newest indictment, Harris' first sitdown interview as Democratic candidate for President, GOP struggles in Georgia and North Carolina, Larry Hogan's gains in Maryland, the Trump campaign, polling, the RFK campaign, Israel's expansion of their genocidal offensive to the West Bank, Biden's heavy-handed pier mishap, Meta, and Nassau County's mask ban, before expanding on Jack Smith's updated Jan 6 indictment and the response from the Trump campaign. Cole Stangler then dives right into a background on France's recent snap elections, called by Emmanuel Macron in the face of the rising popularity of the far-right, resulting in a left-wing plurality in parliament unified by their anti-fascist aims, with the Macronist center-right coalition finishing in second and the far-right in third. From here, Stangler walks through Macron's astonishing decision over the weeks since to take a hardline stance on refusing to name a left-wing prime minister or allowing the establishment of a left-wing government, taking advantage of a lack of constitutional clarity in the period he is allowed to take in naming a successor. After expanding on how this maneuver is ideologically consistent with Macron's politics, Cole explores the overwhelmingly (and unsurprisingly) negative – but productive – response from the French left, unpacking their plan for pushing Macron to fulfill his constitutional duties, before wrapping up with an assessment of what Macron's failure to name a new PM means for the immediate-future of French governance. Emma is then joined by Michael Brenes, who jumps right into the central parallels in his comparison between the infamous Henry Kissinger and Biden's National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, touching on their expansive roles in administrations pushing foreign policy projects to maintain and strengthen American primacy with little-to-no moral limit, and walking through the particular role Sullivan has played in advancing Joe Biden's hyper-Zionist agenda despite overwhelming public disapproval. Shifting focus, Brenes then looks to Harris' recently named National Security Advisory, Philip Gordon, unpacking his record as Middle East coordinator in Obama's second administration, including his objections to US interventionism and regime change, stance on Israeli apartheid and Palestinian self-determination, and role in advancing the Iran deal, despite Israel's objections. After expanding on some more problematic (if predictable) elements of Gordon's background, Michael parses through the lines between Harris' critique of Biden's approach to Israel's genocide and real signs of a differing agenda, and why Biden's failures offer important lessons in the contradictions of US primacy and imperialism. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by RM Brown as they watch Trump call on the Lord to come down and count ballots in California, parse through Tulsi Gabbard's not-so-shocking endorsement of Donald Trump, and listen to Glenn Beck unpack the American Oligarchy. PBD gets some valuable ‘tainment out of Brett Weinstein's cuckoldry at the hands of Elon Musk, and a West Bank settler unpacks colonialism's bad rap, plus, your IMs! Behind the News, 7/25/24 - guests: Cole Stangler on the French elections, David Palumbo-Liu on the world that produced JD Vance, a bit of Jane McAlevey on power - Doug Henwood
The 2024 Paris Olympics have brought massive investment to the City of Light, including the construction of new housing, sports facilities, and public transportation. Yet we shouldn't let that obscure a more sinister phenomenon: gentrification, which has rapidly transformed many of the city's former immigrant and working-class strongholds into expensive quarters for the newly affluent. On this episode, Commonweal senior editor Matt Boudway speaks with journalist Cole Stangler, author of Paris Is Not Dead: Surviving Hypergentrification in the City of Light. Stangler, who lives in France, explains Paris's historical transformation, as well as more recent developments in French politics. We're joined by two experts on European politics to explain the EU parliamentary election results: David Adler, general coordinator of the Progressive International, and David Broder, historian of Italy and Europe editor at Jacobin. What do the results say about the strength of the far right in Europe? And why has Emmanuel Macron of France called snap parliamentary elections in response? Is Macron welcoming the far-right into power in France, or is there some other explanation for his gamble? President Macron's decision to call elections seems suicidal: the far right could form the next French government. But has the left got its act together - or is it all too late, and what about a vicious media smear campaign against them?Joined by the brilliant journalist Cole Stangler, author of Paris Isn't Dead (https://saqibooks.com/books/the-westbourne-press/paris-isnt-dead-yet/), and articles in outlets such as the New York Times (https://www.nytimes.com/2024/06/13/opinion/macron-france-elections.html).Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-owen-jones-podcast. On this week's episode of Lever Time, David Sirota is joined by author and Washington Post Editorial board member Shadi Hamid to discuss the ongoing conflict in Israel and Gaza, specifically how this current iteration of the decades-long hostilities is being debated, protested, perceived, and exacerbated by people in America and across the globe. In what has already been a bitterly polarizing decade in American history, the deadly conflict unfolding in Israel and Gaza has somehow managed to intensify that division. While there has been some progress, like the growing number of elected officials who support a permanent ceasefire agreement, the majority of our public discourse surrounding this crisis is heated and unconstructive. But an issue like this requires patience, humility, and a lot of listening. That's true from the holiday dinner table to the White House. In today's discussion, David speaks with Shadi about why this particular conflict has drawn more global attention and instigated more public debate than other global conflicts. They also discuss reconciling the right to exist for both Israelis and Palestinians, how to construct a practical path forward that can meaningfully address genuine grievances, and what the changing politics of Israel-Palestine inside the Democratic Party might mean for the 2024 election.A transcript of this episode is available here.Links: The Problem Of Democracy: America, The Middle East, And The Rise And Fall Of An Idea (Brookings, 2022)BONUS: Last week's bonus episode of Lever Time Premium, exclusively for The Lever's supporting subscribers, featured our interview with journalist and author Cole Stangler about his new book Paris Is Not Dead: Surviving Hypergentrification in the City of Light. On this week's episode of Lever Time, producer Frank Cappello and senior editor and reporter Andrew Perez are joined by health care journalist Bob Herman, who recently co-authored a report for health care industry news organization STAT detailing how the country's largest health insurer has used artificial intelligence to deny rehabilitation services for older and disabled Americans. The insurer, UnitedHealth Group, has claimed that its algorithm, which predicts how long patients will require rehab services, is used solely as a recommendation. But its subsidiary's case managers allege the company pressures them to adhere to the algorithm's suggestions in order to cut off payments as quickly as possible. This issue is affecting Americans enrolled in Medicare Advantage health insurance plans — the privatized version of Medicare operated by private insurers as an alternative to traditional Medicare. In today's interview, Frank and Andrew speak with Bob about the growing use of artificial intelligence in the health care industry, how insurance companies like UnitedHealth are effectively being run like automobile assembly lines, and how the federal government has largely failed to ensure that the private insurers operating Medicare Advantage plans follow Medicare coverage rules.A transcript of this episode is available here.Links: UnitedHealth Pushed Employees To Follow An Algorithm To Cut Off Medicare Patients' Rehab Care (STAT, 2023)BONUS: This past Monday's bonus episode of Lever Time Premium, exclusively for The Lever's supporting subscribers, featured our interview with journalist and author Cole Stangler about his new book Paris Is Not Dead: Surviving Hypergentrification in the City of Light. On this week's episode of Lever Time, news editor Lucy Dean Stockton is joined by researcher Rosanna Landis Weaver and Andrew Behar, CEO of the non-profit shareholder advocacy organization As You Sow, to discuss how they're using stock ownership in publicly-traded companies to promote corporate change from within. 50 years ago, economist Milton Friedman argued that a corporation's “greatest responsibility lies in the satisfaction of the shareholders.” In other words, the primary goal of every business is to increase its profits and maximize returns to investors. But in hindsight, even Fortune magazine acknowledges that the ideology of “shareholder primacy” has extensively damaged society. That's where shareholder advocates come in, since they use their ownership in publicly traded companies to influence company decision-making. Whether it's pushing for transparency, addressing ethical concerns, advocating for sustainable practices, or curtailing CEO pay, shareholders have the ability to shape the companies in which they own stock. In today's interview, Rosanna and Andrew explain how their organization As You Sow practices shareholder advocacy, including a recent win at Starbucks to reduce their plastic waste. They break down their annual list of “The 100 Most Overpaid CEOs,” which details how some of the highest paid CEOs actually underperform for their companies. And they discuss how the Republican-led House Judiciary Committee recently opened an investigation into As You Sow along with other organizations, as part of their culture war against ESG (Environment, Social, and Governance) investments. A transcript of this episode is available here.Links: As You Sow The 100 Most Overpaid CEOs (As You Sow, 2023) BONUS: On Monday's bonus episode of Lever Time Premium, exclusively for The Lever's supporting subscribers, we'll be publishing our interview with journalist and author Cole Stangler about his new book Paris Is Not Dead: Surviving Hypergentrification in the City of Light, which explores how gentrification has affected the cultural makeup of Paris, and the public housing policies that have helped maintain the city's diverse, working-class character. If you'd like access to Lever Time Premium, which includes extended interviews and bonus content, head over to LeverNews.com to become a supporting subscriber. If you'd like to leave a tip for The Lever, click the following link.
Emma hosts Anastasia Curwood, Professor of History at the University of Kentucky, to discuss her recent book Shirley Chisholm: Champion of Black Feminist Power Politics. Then, she's joined by labor and politics reporter Cole Stangler, to discuss the recent worker protests in France. First, Emma runs through updates on the death toll from the earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria, the brutality coverup in the Atlanta PD's Cop City killing of an activist, the role of Norfolk Southern Freight in helping kill the safety regulations that would've aided their most recent chemical derailment, and the Ohio reporter that was arrested for asking questions about the incident, before diving into Ron DeSantis absolutely charisma-free response to being called a pedophile by Donald Trump. Professor Anastasia Curwood then dives right into her work creating what may be the first true cradle-to-grave biography of one of America's most important political figures of the 20th Century, parsing through Shirley Chisholm's roots as a Brooklyn-born daughter of formerly enslaved immigrants from Barbados, immediately entering into a world of Black radicalism and political organizing, from her grandmother's emphasis on self-determination to her father's involvement with Marcus Garvey, all shaping the lead up to her political career. Next, Professor Curwood walks Emma through the start of Chisholm's entrance into politics, running with insurgent Democrat clubs to win a seat on the New York State Assembly in 1964, where she would align herself growing Civil Rights movement and garner an incredible grassroots base that, alongside the electoral realignment coming out of the Civil Rights Act, put her in an ideal position to become Brooklyn's first Black Congressperson as she road through a tough primary against former CORE Director James Farmer, before winning the general at the end of 1968. After tackling her role (both in the New York State Assembly and in the House) in fighting for a bolstered social safety net (including pushing a universal childcare bill all the way to Nixon's veto), Emma and Anastasia Curwood wrap up the interview by assessing Chisolm's relationship to the White Feminist movement of the era, including organizing greatly with women like Bella Abzug and Gloria Steinem earlier in her political career, only to be completely deserted by them in her 1972 presidential run. Next, Cole Stangler gets right into the Emmanuel Macron policy that would raise the French pension age at least two years for all workers, parsing through the general consensus among the French as an attack on their labor rights, delaying access to the funds that much of the French have spent decades paying and extending their reliance on labor exploitation. After briefly contrasting the French pension program with the US systems of Social Security and Medicare, Cole Stangler wraps up the interview by tackling the constitutionally-guaranteed labor rights in France, and what this means for the protest moving forwards. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as Matt discusses his experience debating the right on “what if I like HAD to say the N-Word,” Ben Shapiro relays the good ol' “don't they teach Black people to listen to the cops” dog whistle, and Left Reckoning caller Joe calls in to discuss recommended guests for discussing China-Taiwan relations. Did this week's one-on-one debate between Emmanuel Macron and Marine Le Pen change the race in any significant ways? Why is Le Pen drawing notably more support this time around than she did in 2017? How much is Macron's strategy of pivoting to the right on issues of culture and identity to blame for her rise? What about Jean-Luc Mélenchon, the leftwing politician who nearly made it to the runoff? And why did the far-right candidate Éric Zemmour fade? Listen for the answers to these questions—and more! First, Cole and Emma dive into the major takeaways from the first round of the French presidential election, setting up a fight between President Macron's political establishment and the Far Right's Marine Le Pen, and how the democratic socialist candidacy of Jean-Luc Mélenchon found a foothold despite a right-wing-dominated media empire, and a fractured support system in the National Assembly, by relying on a coalition of working-class voters, a recognition of multiculturalism, and a general set of bread and butter economic policy. Next, they dive into the second round matchup, as Cole covers Macron's shift to the right over his candidacy, particularly in his embrace of Islamophobic fear-mongering, repeal of the wealth tax, and commitment to a law and order candidacy. They compare and contrast his hard pivot to racism with Le Pen's more subtle shift away from overtly racist rhetoric (despite its continued role in her policy) as she found herself challenged from the right, before Cole covers the general anti-Macron sentiment grounding Le Pen's campaign, and the establishment's preparations to blame the left for any defeat from the right. Next, Amanda Chicago Lewis joins as they discuss the racial equity policy that is “all the rage” in progressive states legalizing marijuana, and the unsurprising manipulation of Black and brown business owners that's going on behind the scenes. First, Amanda dives into the representation of the policy as a “license to generational wealth” for people of color, and how, instead, we've seen the process for an equity license drive business owners to predatory loans to meet absurd conditions just so they can even be considered. They wrap up the interview with the story of Kika Keith and her attempts to take advantage of this supposed equity program in her city, only to be stymied left and right by the US government (both state and federally), and look to past policies of Black Capitalism and redlining to explain the US's need to have complete control over the terms and conditions of Black wealth. Emma also touches on the Sunset Park subway attack that occurred this morning and Joe Scarborough's recommendation for Dems to focus on conservatives being canceled on social media… to win the midterms? And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Nomiki Konst as they cover Ben Shapiro's reminder that rising sea levels will AT WORST, contribute to mass homelessness, Zack from Tennessee dives into conservatism in the southeast and its relationship to legislative success, and Amy Wax's absurd collection of violently racist rhetoric about her own students. Alex Walker goes OFF on those darn whiney leftists, Spencer from Utah discusses the anti-trans anti-teacher legislation from the teacher's perspective, and Jennifer the GenX-er ends the show with a shower of positivity, plus, your calls and IMs! Squeals of “socialism!” and “Venezuela!” aside, we know how to nationalize industries that are working against our nation's interests and have done it before, repeatedly. This time it's not just about saving our banks or fighting a war. This time, it's about saving the world. Paris-based journalist Cole Stangler joins Thom to unpack the first results from the 2022 French election. Emmanuel Macron and Marie Le Pen go through to the final round for the presidency of France. See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
This week, US President Donald Trump and former vice president Joe Biden faced off in the first of three presidential debates ahead of the vote on November 3. This initial clash was chaotic, full of insults and – for many people – anything but presidential. FRANCE 24's Cole Stangler gives us his take.
Is Trump trying to get one of our spies inside the Kremlin outed as a favor to Putin? And what details are emerging from the continued analysis of the Mueller report?.. Plus Luke Vargas on corporate tax evasion. and Cole Stangler with the results of the European Parliamentary elections.
Thom takes a look at the recent televised town halls of Democratic candidates- and considers their surprising statements. Who supports advancing toward an impeachment posture of our obstructionist head of state. And why is the media is not taking a more serious stance on Trump's disregard of Congressional subpoenas? ---------- Talk Media News' Luke Vargas just watched America water down a U.N. resolution against rape during times of war. And what is happening with the arrested reporters in Myanmar? -------- The latest developments in Trump's lackluster re-negotiation of NAFTA with the executive director of Public Citizen's 'Global Trade Watch', Laurie Wallach. ----------- Thom reads from the evocative new book 'Our Man: Richard Holbrooke and the end of the American Century.' ----------- News from the ground on France's yellow vest movement from Parisian and Jacobin reporter Cole Stangler. ------------ Is Netflix related to the low birth rate? Trump's online ad spending targets old people. Also, details on Elizabeth Warren's student debt relief plan. ----------- Thom gets some thoughtful callers on the horn- What's up with that darn Mueller?- Trump's 'Promises Broken.' And how did the Democratic candidates do in CNN's town hall?
Cole Stangler This episode is the second in our series looking at democracy around the world. France is the focus this week. Our guest is Cole Stangler, an independent journalist based in Paris who covers French politics. The yellow vest movement, named for the safety vests that all drivers are required to carry in their […]
After all the losses in the stock market, Thom postulates that financial signs indicate we may be coming to the crash he wrote about in his book, the inevitable consequence of the way the system was propped up in after the crash of 2007. But this time we don't have room to drop interest rates. What can we do? ------ Green New Deal. And she says there is a way we can pay for it too. ------ A fascinating discussion on the possible consequences of the federal deficit. Japan's example discussed. And Thom debates a caller who says we need to pay everything off. ------ Cole Stangler reports from Paris, France on the Yellow Vest Movement. ------ Now that Trump has been named as a criminal in a federal case, what would be the consequence of impeaching Trump and Pence together? Callers get excited and dream about House Speaker Pelosi becoming President, and related ideas. ------ James in Spokane brings up the question of changing House rules when Democrats take their majority in the House of Reps in January. And then Thom asks Bob Ney of Talk Media News how this might work, he gets an earful of interesting.
This time, it's personal. Senate Democrats have announced their new leadership team and committee assignments, and the two Sams play Monday morning quarterback. It couldn’t happen in Britain. It couldn’t happen in the United States. Except, the far-right recently pulled off stunning victories in both countries. Can the same happen to France next year? We talk to Cole Stangler, an American journalist in Paris to discuss the possibility of a National Front Victory in 2017.And, some of Trump’s darkest campaign promises may actually come true. Members of his transition team are speaking out about what the new administration is planning, and it’s hella grim, folks.
