Send us a Text Message. It's no secret that becoming a medical doctor is considered one of the most revered and respected professions in the world. Then why are physician satisfaction rates so low and burnout rates so high? This is a question our host Dr. Sapna Shah-Haque is determined to get to the bottom of and find solutions to change this “norm” across the profession. In today's episode, we have invited Dr. Nii Darko, a trauma surgeon and podcast co-host alongside his wife Dr. Renee Darko called Docs Outside The Box.After years working in a hospital setting, both Dr. Nii Darko and Dr. Renee Darko decided they wanted to take back their autonomy and decided to change the way they provide healthcare where they are the masters of their own domain and not under the thumb of the faulty system they once were a part of.It is a road less traveled, but it has opened life up for both Dr. Nii Darko and Dr. Renee Darko, where they don't feel the burn out and can essentially give better care to their patients because of it.So this begs the question, if doctors took back their autonomy, would it increase satisfaction? Also, what does taking your autonomy look like and how can we achieve it? All these questions and more will be answered in this episode, so be sure to tune in and find out!Topics discussed in this episode:Who is Dr. Nii Darko and Dr. Renee Darko? What is locum tenens and its benefits? The loan debt issue for medical professionalsThings medical students should consider early in their careersThe importance of hiring a contract lawyer early on in your medical careerLearning how to advocate for yourself as a medical professionalFinding autonomy as a doctorHow to increase physician satisfactionImportant conversations we need to have to address the burnout problemWhy are many physicians suffering with their mental health in silence?Connect with Dr. Nii Darko:InstagramFacebookTwitterCheck out Docs Outside The Box on Apple Podcasts! To listen to more episodes, head to Though I am a physician, this is not medical advice. In LA, I stayed with an old friend of mine – Kwesi Asamoah. We met in college and have been friends ever since. That's almost 20 years folks! Besides giving me a place to stay, he helped me with equipment checks and recording portions of the interview on camera. There's more to Kwesi than just a great friend. Not only does he love all things related to the NBA, he also enjoys world travel and surfing. He's not all fun and games though, Kwesi is formally trained as both an engineer and architect – yeah he's pretty smarty-art (Chris Rock reference). Last year, Kwesi added architect outside the box to his repertoire when he chucked the deuces to his old employed life and started working as an independent contractor. He hasn't looked back since. He joined me for my first Docs Outside the Box meetup at WurstKuche restaurant in Venice a couple of weeks ago. We got there pretty early and I decided to interview him about what pushed him to live outside the box. He came correct and kept it 100%. I'm telling you docs…we can learn a lot from those who aren't in the medical field. I bet those sitting on the fence can learn a lot from this interview. Things to pick up in this interview: What pushed him into bouncing from his employed position The quote from a co-worker that gave him the confidence to embrace life as an independent contractor How we bonded in college over Beer Pong/Why he hates the New York Knicks His tips to make sure you don't stumble when starting as an independent contractor How he answers #imnotjustanengineer/architect   Recommendations by Kwesi Asamoah: The Artist's Way Tim Ferris Podcast   Contact Kwesi Asamoah at:  Kwesi.asamoah@gmail.com   Music: VeniceBeach/Gwiz/soundcloud.com/gwizdb/   Join the Docs Outside the Box Nation on FB: docsotbnation.com   Check out our sponsor Set for Life Insurance The post He's the architect of his own future appeared first on DOCS OUTSIDE THE BOX.

It's not because I did it and want everyone to blindly just follow me. I believe a life without debt allows you to fully realize the potential of your income and make moves that can lead to a more fulfilling career. My next guest is here to talk about how doctors can quickly pay off their student loans or other debt as quickly as possible. Dr. Cory Fawcett created Prescription for Financial Success – Helping Health Care Professionals Grow after a combination of thinking outside of the box and looking to decrease his clinical practice a bit. He has now published the first three books in The Doctors Guide financial series, writes a weekly blog, and posts 3-5 minute videos on his Facebook page daily. After his first book won an award for Non-Fiction book of the year he decided it was time to give up clinical medicine and concentrate on changing the financial lives of doctors through writing and coaching. His last day of clinical medicine was Feb 20, 2017. He now calls himself a “repurposed” surgeon. We'll be talking about his book – Eliminating Debt. The White Coat Investor called him the “Dave Ramsey for Doctors without the bad investing advice.” I definitely agree with that. I found his book easy to read and the advice was simple and applicable whether you're a resident or young attending. Definitely wish I had discovered him sooner!! Things to pick up in this episode: Paying off debt vs investing Why you should pay off your debt as quick as possible He answers the scenario of a young Neurosurgeon attending with plenty of debt, no savings and investing Advice to pre-meds & medical students How he answers #imnotjustadoc   To learn more about Dr. Cory Fawcett check out his website: drcorysfawcett.com   Check out our sponsor Set for Life Insurance: www.setforlifeinsurance.com     The post Eliminate your Debt NOW! – Cory Fawcett, MD appeared first on DOCS OUTSIDE THE BOX.

LISTEN & SUBSCRIBE ON: APPLE PODCASTS | GOOGLE PLAY | STITCHER Happy New Year Docs Outside the Box Nation!! Thanks for joining me on not just any episode of Docs Outside the Box. This is my first episode recorded face-to-face with my guest. It was a great opportunity to challenge myself and take the show to a higher level. Today's guest is Dr. Brian Williams, the on-call Trauma Surgeon at Parkland Hospital on July 7th, 2016 – the night when a lone gunman went on a shooting rampage against police in Dallas, Texas. Dr. Williams and his surgical team are no strangers to multiple gunshot victims and quickly went into action to save as many lives as possible. Trauma surgeons train their entire careers for a night like this. This situation was quite different, not for the medical care, but for the obvious social and racial undertones. The recent deaths of two black men killed by police officers streaming through cellphones and living rooms throughout the nation and now a black gunman shooting police officers – created both a unique and precarious situation. Oh, and did I forget to mention that Dr. Brian Williams was at the time the only African American trauma surgeon on staff. It's a lot – breathe! Dr. Williams' comments four days later at a news conference further thrust him into the national spotlight when he discussed the dichotomy of treating police officers while at the same time having a fear of them as an African American male. A little over a year from these events, Dr. Brian Williams gave a shocker when he announced on his blog that he was resigning from his position at Parkland Hospital. Without another job in play, he described it as going from “Dr. Williams to Mr. Mom.” Without any regret, he is living in his purpose and outside the box as a surgeon, speaker, and now social activist. Things you'll learn in this episode: Why he calls July 7th, 2016 the worst night of his career His thoughts prior to coming to the news conference on July 11th, 2016 Why a year later he left his dream job How he has transitioned into a public speaker and social activist The story of how Dr. Williams and I met and the positive effects of mentorship How he answers #imnotjustadoc   Learn more about Dr. Brian Williams: Brianwilliamsmd.com Follow him on Twitter: @Bhwilliamsmd Music: G wiz – Nostagia –  soundcloud.com/gwizdb   Check out our sponsor Set for Life Insurance The post 042 – From international fame to unemployment appeared first on DOCS OUTSIDE THE BOX.

We all know that literacy is very important, because it's connected to how we interact in the world and has a large impact in how we do economically in society. In developing countries, childhood literacy is a problem and my next guest has decided to do something about this issue. Dr. Akua Ampadu is the founder and CEO of Healing Words Foundation. The mission of Healing Words is to provide books and other forms of literacy to children in pediatric wards and outpatient clinics in developing nations. On a 4th year medical student externship in Accra, Ghana, Akua noticed on the pediatric ward that after being seen by doctors and staff – these children spent hours in bed without anything to do. Some of these children spent several weeks recovering in these wards, and without proper cognitive stimulation, these children were at a distinct disadvantage when they returned back to school. This experience sparked the idea for creating a charity and she literally Googled her way into creating Healing Words. From the website: Healing words seeks to provide an opportunity to retreat into the comfort of a book, allowing the imagination to take flight, if even for a short while. Healing Words Foundation recognizes the importance of reading to a child's holistic health, and uses bibliotherapy to ignite and perpetuate a love for books among patients and their families. Healing Words has been very successful and so far has sent books to notable hospitals in Ghana such as the Foundation of Orthopedic & Complex Spine (FOCOS) Hospital, which provides comprehensive orthopedic care to those who might not otherwise have access to this. Dr. Ampadu obtained her undergraduate studies from Penn State University. She then went on to complete her medical school training at The Ohio State University. Her internal medicine training was done at Newark Beth Israel Hospital in Newark, New Jersey. Currently, Akua is practicing as a hospitalist. Things to pick up in this episode: The implications of her decision to be an independent contractor The pride she feels looking at herself more as a business than as an individual doctor How she Googled her way into creating a charity Advice on the pitfalls in creating a charity Her lifehack that makes her very productive and efficient How she answers #imnotjustadoc Resources mentioned on this show: Healing Words Foundation – www.readingandhealing.org Healing Words Facebook Page – www.facebook.com/healingwordsorg Dr Ampadu's Instagram – www.instagram.com/doctorkukie If you enjoy the show please be sure to review this podcast episode on Apple Podcasts – I would so appreciate it….plus I read all the reviews on the show! For some time now, technology has been both disruptive and a force for change to even the most stubborn of industries. Dr. Paula Muto hopes that what Uber has done to the taxi industry, her company (UberDoc) can do to healthcare. UberDoc is a web application that makes it easy to connect patients with surgical specialists without referrals, insurance paperwork, or even long wait times. Obviously, this is only for patients who need specialists in a semi-urgent manner. Went to the ER and told you need your Gallbladder taken out as an outpatient? How about you broke your ankle and now you need an outpatient orthopedic surgery referral. These are common issues that can be complicated by not knowing which surgeon to go to, not knowing which surgeons are covered by your insurance, and having to wait weeks to see a specialist – I think we can all relate to this!! On this episode, I get to chat with Dr. Peter Kim. Dr. Kim did his undergraduate studies at Johns Hopkins University, and then attained his medical degree (MD) from University of Maryland School of Medicine. Currently he is an anesthesiologist in Los Angeles, California. Peter's session is a bit different than my previous interviews. Why? Well, the common theme shared by my other guests revolved around leveraging our credentials for media presence or achieving financial freedom. Although Dr. Kim loves the idea of financial freedom, his story is about disrupting the real estate industry with his company – Curbside Real Estate . The impetus to start the company came from his frustrations while purchasing a home and wondering why there wasn't a better way for busy professionals like himself. Curbside Real Estate touts being able to streamline the process of purchasing a home for busy professionals by using a preferred network of realtors and mortgage loan lenders. The company is even touting no private mortgage insurance (that's a big deal)! Check out the website for Curbside Real Estate – www.curbsiderealestate.com Things you'll learn in this episode: The story behind the creation of Curbside Real Estate What role social responsibility plays in his company as well as the positive impact it has in less developed areas of the world How he overcame being timid about his business with colleagues The current top 3 mistakes physicians are making when purchasing a home Lifehacks he uses to balance a full clinical schedule with being a family man and now a successful entrepreneur How he answers #imnotjustadoc   SUBSCRIBE: iTunes | GooglePlayMusic | Stitcher   The post 013 – An anesthesiologist taking the pain away from the home buying experience appeared first on DOCS OUTSIDE THE BOX.

"I had a degree from a prestigious college, had been accepted to my top residency program, had a bright future with a decent salary and job security waiting for me, and all I felt was angry and afraid. I didn't want what came with it, the practice of medicine." Dr. Michelle Mudge-Riley, Physicians in Transition - Interviews with 25 doctors who successful reinvented themselves A very sobering, yet powerful quote from my next guest Dr. Michelle Mudge-Riley. Besides the coaching business, Dr. Mudge-Riley's work has been featured in numerous media outlets including KevinMD, The D.O., and The Physician Executive Journal. How many of you just want to stick your head in the sand when it comes to understanding personal finance and investing? I get it!  The majority of us had no exposure to finances in college and medical school which either makes us feel like we don't know what we're doing or makes us feel obligated to pay someone else to manage our hard-earned money! Well, what if I told you that understanding investing is a lot simpler than the concepts we all learn in medical school? Don't take my word for it.  My next guest, Dr. Jim Dahle (a.k.a The White Coat Investor), reinforces that point on this podcast. Like many of you listening, he had a bad experience with a financial advisor and unknowingly bought financial products he would later regret. Sound familiar?
