This week on Autonomy Markets, Grayson Brulte and Walter Piecyk discuss autonomous trucking reaching an inflection point, Waymo acquiring Apple's Arizona proving ground and Tesla filing for a robotaxi permit in Las Vegas. As Gatik expands its middle-mile freight operations with PepsiCo across Texas, Arizona and Arkansas, Volvo Autonomous Solutions told investors it is targeting $3 billion in autonomous transport revenue within five years through its transport-as-a-service (TaaS) business. On the robotaxi side of the business, Waymo acquired Apple's former 5,500-acre proving ground in Wittmann, Arizona for $220 million, a facility with a high-speed oval an hour from its Mesa up-fitting plant. Grayson views the acquisition as a signal that Waymo is preparing to test at highway speeds away from prying eyes, while Walt notes that satellite imagery sees everything. Before the segueing into the Foreign Autonomy Desk, Grayson and Walt debate Tesla's Clark County permit application for up to 5,000 robotaxis in a Las Vegas market with roughly 6,500 Uber drivers, Einride going public and Rivian beginning R2 deliveries. On the Foreign Autonomy Desk, Chinese robotaxi continues to accelerate into Europe with Pony.ai in Luxembourg and WeRide in Slovakia.Episode Chapters00:00 Gatik Goes Driver-Out with PepsiCo02:51 Volvo Targets $3 Billion in Autonomous Transport Revenue06:54 Einride Goes Public08:58 Tesla Files for Clark County Robotaxi Permit11:52 Waymo Acquires Apple's Arizona Proving Ground13:39 Wayve and Uber Open the UK Interest List16:20 Baidu Added to the Pentagon's Designation List18:31 Foreign Autonomy Desk27:13 Nebius Launches a Physical AI Lab28:14 Next Week--------About The Road to AutonomyThe Road to Autonomy is the leading applied intelligence platform covering the convergence of automation, autonomy, and the Autonomy Economy.™.Through our podcasts, newsletter, and proprietary applied intelligence, we set the narrative for institutional investors, industry executives, and policymakers navigating the convergence of automation, autonomy, and economic growth.Join institutional investors and industry leaders who read This Week in The Autonomy Economy every Sunday.

On today's exciting HEP-isode, the boys try to figure out what that chair in the hotel room is for and get sidetracked by old Builder's Square flashbacks while Mike gets worked up about the proliferation of dually pickups and Jo sits down with Einride CEO Roozbeh Charli to talk about their new Amazon deal, L4 autonomous semi trucks, and the company's billion dollar IPO.
In this episode, we kick things off by examining autonomous trucking's major geographic expansion as Einride deploys cabless electric trucks in Ohio in partnership with EASE Logistics. This proof-of-concept deployment represents a significant shift beyond the Sun Belt, bringing SAE Level 4 autonomous technology to the industrial Midwest for the first time. Operating between warehouses in Marysville, the project is part of Ohio and Indiana's Truck Automation Corridor initiative to evaluate real-world impacts on safety and freight efficiency. Next, we explore the equipment sector where Volvo Trucks North America has unveiled a completely redesigned D13 engine engineered to meet 2027 EPA standards taking effect January 1st. The next-generation powerplant slashes nitrogen oxide emissions by a staggering eighty-three percent and particulate matter by fifty percent, making it Volvo's cleanest engine ever. With compacted graphite iron block construction, a higher compression ratio, and innovative fourteen-wave piston design, the engine delivers up to 540 horsepower while fundamentally redefining heavy-duty performance and environmental compliance. Finally, we cover a sudden leadership shakeup at the western Class I railroad as BNSF's chief operations officer departed after just five months in the top operations role. Matt Garland, a twenty-five-year BNSF veteran who took the COO position on January 1st, has been replaced by Craig Morehouse, who will now oversee the entire operations organization. The abrupt transition comes as Berkshire Hathaway's new leadership pushes BNSF to further improve its operating ratio and operational performance. Driverless trucks have officially made it to the road and everyday operations of many shippers, but there is still plenty of room for innovation in the field. For instance, if there is no driver, why keep the driver's compartment at all? This week, we speak with Roozbeh Charli, CEO of Einride, which is introducing fully cabless autonomous trucks into customer fleets and accelerating that rollout through its business combination with Legato Merger Corp. III (NYSE:LEGT). Roozbeh explains how Einride has sped up commercialization by integrating autonomous operations into its existing fleet electrification services, and why he believes now is the right moment for the industry to move past incremental steps and embrace what fully autonomous logistics can ultimately look like. Give it a listen.

Roozbeh Charli, CEO of Einride, discusses the EV company's path to going public. They operate in seven countries and have “more than 25 blue chip companies” as clients. He also emphasizes $800M in potential ARR on their growth path. This episode conducts a deep dive into the current volatility of the freight market, focusing on how agility is the critical metric for survival and success. Using recent ATBS data, we analyze how successful owner-operators are improving their net income, despite rising fixed costs, especially maintenance, by maintaining stability and focusing on calculating their contribution margin. New tariffs on imported heavy-duty trucks are expected to curb new truck orders, leading to a predicted rise in used truck prices due to scarcity. Meanwhile, on global ocean lanes, Asia-to-US West Coast container rates dropped another 15% last week, forcing carriers to blank about 13% of scheduled sailings to stabilize rates amidst ongoing trade risk . Not all global movement is weak, as the Port of Savannah stands out, having handled over 534,000 TEUs in August, due in part to infrastructure adaptation like the new fast-track routing system. We also cover the major policy fight concerning the Union Pacific-Norfolk Southern merger, which BNSF argues will hurt competition and service, while the merging parties claim it will boost volume with single-line options. In transportation technology, Einride achieved the world's first cabless electric fully autonomous cross-border delivery between Sweden and Norway, proving that autonomous systems can manage complex international regulatory requirements through digital integration. Conversely, the ongoing Canada Post strike is presented as a case study in failing to adapt with workers resisting modernization, leading to private carriers scooping up quickly diverted parcel volumes and the postal service's market share plummeting. President Trump has announced a doubling of tariffs on imported steel from 25% to 50% to protect domestic jobs and strengthen the industry. This move follows a previous tariff announcement and aims to ensure America's future is built with U.S.-produced steel rather than "shoddy steel from Shanghai". You can read more about the tariff increase here. We also discuss the ongoing labor dispute involving Canada Post and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW). Canada Post has requested government intervention to hold a vote among unionized employees on its latest contract offer, highlighting the impasse in negotiations over wages and structural changes. The situation is a continuation of a conflict that included a nearly five-week strike last year. For more details on the Canada Post situation, see the article here. Swedish startup Einride is reducing the carbon footprint of its commercial trucking customers by making sure that electric trucks not only have a place to charge but the availability to charge when needed. The enemy is dwell time. It has a different definition but results in the same inefficient outcome as the one that plagues traditional fleets. We're closing out a beautiful 31 day month as we talk about VW's plans to NOT enter the EV pricing war. We also cover an impressive EV trucking network, as well as a one sentence warning from people who typically talk a lot. Amidst growing pressure from emerging Chinese manufacturers, Volkswagen's COO, Ralf Brandstaetter, has announced the company's refusal to partake in China's discount battles, emphasizing sustainable profitability over market share. "Our market position is strong enough. For us, the focus is on profitability, not sales volume or market share," said BrandstaetterVW has been the sales leader in China for years until Chinese manufacturer BYD outsold them this year“Volkswagen aspires to be the biggest international carmaker in China, he said, adding that it's irrelevant if another national manufacturer sells more than it does."If we achieve sales of more than 4 million vehicles in this environment in 2030, with corresponding profitability, that is a position we could very well live with," he said.Autonomous EV freight company Einride is set to revolutionize the United Arab Emirates' freight landscape, partnering with the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure to deploy a comprehensive electric, autonomous freight network. Covering over 550 km, the initiative includes 2,000 electric trucks, 200 autonomous trucks, and eight charging stations across the country's "Falcon Rise" grid. The ambitious project is expected to be rolled out over the next five years, aiming to significantly reduce emissions in the UAE and optimize industry operations. The plan includes deploying 2,000 electric trucks and 200 autonomous trucks, with charging infrastructure to support these vehicles including eight charging stations with over 500 charging points.Einride is a Swedish company and is only 7 years old and already has several impressive innovations like the “Remote Pod Operator”In a one sentence warning we would have raised a collective eyebrow at 24 months ago, tech leaders and experts have asserted that the existential risk posed by artificial intelligence (AI) should be on par with avoiding nuclear war. This statement was published by the U.S.-based nonprofit the Center for AI Safety, a significant advocate for AI safety standards. The warning includes high-profile signatories by industry giants such as Sam Altman of OpenAI, Demis Hassabis of Google DeepMind, and Dario Amodei of Anthropic, among others.Despite its wide support, some significant players like Meta have not signed the statement.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion

Show #1477 Well…Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily, your trusted source of EV information. It's Tuesday 24th May, and Martyn is off on his holidays for the week. I'm Blake Boland, and I've gone through every EV story today so that you don't have to! The “Stealth Bomber” Drops A Bomb: Foxconn-Fisker Vehicle Confirmed - Author of article, Jennifer Sensiba - ‘In a previous series of articles, I explained that Taiwan-based Foxconn (aka Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., Ltd.) is going to be a serious player in the EV industry, but that you probably won't hear much about it. Why? Because it is going to be the “stealth bomber” of manufacturers.' - A few days ago, Fisker announced solid plans to build the PEAR, and it is working with Foxconn to build it in Ohio. This is supposed to happen in 2024, and the starting price is supposed to be below $29,900. - Whatever the PEAR is going to actually be, Fisker and Foxconn tell us that they expect to sell a whole bunch of them. After a ramp-up period, they want to make at least 250,000 units per year, and that they have high hopes to make many more. Original Source : The "Stealth Bomber" Drops A Bomb: Foxconn-Fisker Vehicle Confirmed - CleanTechnica Tesla Giga Shanghai output will return to pre-lockdown levels by Tuesday -An internal memo sent to Tesla employees said the automaker plans to have production levels at its Gigafactory Shanghai production facility return to pre-lockdown levels by Tuesday. The plant faced a three-week hiatus in production in April after a surge of COVID-19 cases in the city caused government officials to determine a shutdown was appropriate. - Tesla's daily output will return to 2,600 on Tuesday, according to the memo, which was seen by Reuters. The document said there were around 1,000 electric units produced on Monday, and the weekly output would move closer to 16,000 cars every seven days. - Additionally, this has made a substantial impact on workforces in the area. Tesla, along with other companies in the Shanghai region, has been short on workers, as well as restricted with parts due to supply chain issues in scaled back production due to the shutdowns. Currently, the facility is running at about 45% of capacity and auto parts suppliers are also at around that level, a local government official said at a briefing last week. This contradicts a statement from another local government official who said in early May that Giga Shanghai production was back at over 80% of capacity. The Einride Trailer is said to extend the range of the aforementioned tractor units by up to 650 kilometers (404 miles) on a single charge thanks to integrated 320 kWh batteries. - The Einride Trailer is not finalized, with further design iterations expected later on. However, the company plans to have production for initial piloting ready in 2023. -In total, 200 Class 8 BYD 8TT battery-electric day cab trucks to be deployed over the course of the coming twelve months starting in February. - According to the press release, the BYD 8TT will be equipped with a 563 kWh battery (LFP) and offer a range of up to 200 miles.
