Send us a textThis episode, we look at what Rolling Stone magazine considers to be the best songs of the 80's.  We have been critical of Rolling Stone in the past for the quality of their lists, and this time is no different.  However, there's some good stuff in this list, which we're happy to acknowledge.  Of course, we point out their failings as well – it'd be no fun if we didn't, would it?! In Rock News, we look at a new album from Coldplay (as if anybody cares!), the trials of Sean “Puffy” Combs, and The Beatles. Our “Album You Must listen to Before you Die” is 1985's The Nation's Saving Grace, by The Fall.  Mick loves it, Jeff doesn't think much of it.   So, what's new? Another fun episode.  Enjoy.  References:  Rolling Stone magazine, 80's, Coldplay, ‘Moon Music', No 1 album, Sean Diddy Coombs, Puff Daddy, Diddy, Cassie Ventura, Beatlemania, Beatles '64, David Tedeschi, Disney+, The Fall, The Nations Saving Grace, John Leckie, Mark E Smith, Can, German, krautrock, Damo Suzuki, DoubleJay, TripleJ, Prince, ‘Kiss', Madonna, ‘Like a Prayer', Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, ‘The Message', Michael Jackson, ‘Billie Jean', Public Enemy, ‘Bring the Noise', Whitney Houston, ‘How Will I Know?”, The Go-Gos, ‘Our Lips Are Sealed', Duran Duran, ‘Hungry Like the Wolf', Kate Bush, ‘Running Up That Hill', The Smiths, ‘There Is a Light That Never Goes Out', Husker Du, Minutemen, rap artists, Bowie, Depeche Mode, Culture Club, Clash, Neneh Cherry, U2, Joy Division, AC/DC, “Hell's Bells”, INXS, “Never Tear Us Apart”, Apple music streaming, Leonard Cohen, Tower of Song, Sisters of Mercy, “This Corrosion”, “Floodland”, Jim Steinman, “New Big Prinz”, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, “Relax", Cher, “If I Could Turn Back Time”, Missouri, Bow Wow Wow, “I Want Candy”, Haysi Fantaysee, “Shiny Shiny”, Countdown, Falco, “Rock Me, Amadeus”, A-Ha, “Take on me”, Nena,  99 Luftballon, Kim Carnes, “Bette Davis Eyes”, Shriekback, “Nemesis", parthenogenesis, Samantha Fox, Africa, Toto  Playlist – Episode This is our usual playlist, where we curate a list to play what we've talked about in the episode Playlist – Spotify's complete list  Africa – Mass band  Samantha Fox web site – purely for academic interest!

This week we're discussing every album by The Sisters of Mercy. Led by mastermind Andrew Eldritch, this band is paramount in the creation of goth music as we know it. Although they came a few years after pioneers like Siouxsie and the Banshees or The Cure, The Sisters of Mercy's style was so distinct and memorable that most of what we recognize as goth can be traced back to them. Even if goth isn't your thing, there's a lot to be had here.Closing track: “Temple of Love” from Some Girls Wander by Mistake (1992)Patreonhttps://www.patreon.com/everyalbumeverMerchhttps://pandermonkey.creator-spring.com/Mike's EP:Pander Monkey on Bandcamp, Spotify, Apple,Instagram:Mike @pandermonkeyAlex @everyalbumalexTom @tomosmansoundsHistory Tom's stuff:Music on Spotify, ApplePodcast on Spotify, YouTubeSubstackWebsiteMike's Picks:First and Last and Always (1985) — Best Album, Personal FavoriteVision Thing (1990) — Worst Album, Least FavoriteAlex's Picks:Floodland (1987) — Best Album, Personal FavoriteVision Thing (1990) — Worst Album, Least FavoriteAlbums we discussed this episode…Some Girls Wander by Mistake (1992)First and Last and Always (1985)Floodland (1987)Vision Thing (1990)

Art Ross (they/them) and Aaron Green (he/him) come from disparate backgrounds and musical forms, meeting in the middle to comprise a band that's tender and fierce, exuberant and gentle. Green—a veteran of the Halifax rock scene, the guitar anchor of Floodland and Hello Delaware—and Ross—a trans songwriter with an acoustic guitar—started writing songs together over text, by accident. Pillow Fite emerged publicly at the start of 2021 with its non-binary gender-subverting aesthetics already firmly in place. Art and Aaron joined East Coast DNA host Darcy Walsh for chat about their first 3 years as a band, new content, and upcoming performances. 00:15 Welcoming Pillow Fite to East Coast DNA 34:25 Alma by Pillow Fite "Alma," speaks to how much you learn about someone when you're forced to spend so much uninterrupted time together and develop an appreciation for your learned coexistence. The duo — composed of Art Ross (they/them) and Aaron Green (he/him) — touches on relationship dynamics that change during joyful confinement, and how the habits and mannerisms that lovingly annoy you can bring you closer together. Written when they had nowhere to go and nothing to do but make up songs, "Alma" finds the beauty in the quiet moments with your partner, despite the trying circumstances of sharing but one household, and what feels like 4 walls. Pillow Fite presents moody and intimate lyrics delivered with a dreamlike nostalgia alongside inventive guitar riffs and synths - a sensibility that can leave listeners both weeping and singing along. "Alma" offers a production style that is bursting at the seams — a contrast to the times of small room confinement in which the song was written. A folk-fingerpicking style that evolved into a stomp-clap with a pumping, bouncing, drum beat, "Alma" is a nod to their first releases, such as their 2022 debut EP Flutter, which featured airier vocals and gentler sounds. The single was recorded and produced in Halifax, Nova Scotia by Aaron Green, mixed by John Mullane (Future Dad), and mastered by New Brunswick's John McLaggan (Parachute Mastering). This new single follows a slew of releases from the prolific Pillow Fite, including the amped up indie rocker "Ativan," the folk-driven "Napanee," and the soft but moody "Overpass." Gut, wann will man schon Ressourcen loswerden? Das war bestimmt nur ein Sonderfall. Ebenso wie die ganzen Abstürze, die ich hatte, was aber „hoffentlich“ nur an meinem PC liegt.

This is a special double episode celebrating "GothVember" combining 44 and 45 where we talk with guests Jenny Watts and Karen Horn Smith of Fossil & Hide simultaneously about their record picks, Phantasmagoria by the Damned and First and Last and Always by The Sisters of Mercy. In their own words:I chose the album by the Damned, Phantasmagoria, their 6th album released in July of 1985. This was the first Damned album that was made without the infamous Captain Sensible (although he did help write the song 'Is it a dream') AND the Damned's first goth album. Rat Scabies drumming on this record is nostalgic to me of a theme from an old western. Some would argue that this album is not a tried and true Damned album because of its lack of "punk" attributes but I disagree.  Without Dave Vanian, the Damned would not be the Damned. This is the one and only album by The Damned where Dave Vanian truly shines in all of his dracula glory with it's catchy, non-serious yet very thought out amazing vocals, goth glory and punk nostalgia. If you are a "punk" Damned album fan only, listen to Phantasmagoria about a hundred times and you will eventually get it!  - Jenny WattsI chose First and Last and Always by The Sisters of Mercy. The first time I heard the Sisters of Mercy was in 1990 on my local college radio station WFWM. The song was This Corrosion off of their second album Floodland. I was 15 and living in a small mountain town in western MD. My only source for alternative music was the local college radio station and MTV's 120 minutes, which I watched religiously every Sunday night. I remember being totally blown away by This Corrosion and so I begged my mom to drive me two towns over to Camelot music to see if they had any SOM tapes at the store. The only cassette they had was the band's debut album First and Last and Always so I bought it and it changed my 15 year old existence. I couldn't get enough of Andrew Eldritch's deep voice and gloomy lyrics. I love every song on this album and it has been in constant rotation since I first discovered it.  Andrew Eldritch can deny it all he wants (eye roll)  but the Sisters of Mercy hands down defined the goth sound of the 80's and have influenced countless other bands. I had the best time discussing this album! Thanks James, Cassy and Tom! - Karen Horn Smithhttps://www.fossilandhide.com/https://www.instagram.com/fossil_and_hide/

RockerMike and Rob discuss the Sisters of Mercy. The Sisters of Mercy are an English rock band, formed in 1980 in Leeds. After achieving early underground fame there, the band had their commercial breakthrough in the mid-1980s and sustained it until the early 1990s, when they stopped releasing new recorded output in protest against their record company WEA. Currently, the band are a touring outfit only. The group has released three original studio albums: First and Last and Always (1985), Floodland (1987) and Vision Thing (1990). Each album was recorded by a different line-up; singer-songwriter Andrew Eldritch and the drum machine called Doktor Avalanche are the only points of continuity throughout. Eldritch and Avalanche were also involved in The Sisterhood, a side-project connected with Eldritch's dispute with former members. The Sisters of Mercy ceased recording activity in the early 1990s, when they went on strike against East West Records, whom they accused of incompetence and withholding royalties, and had pressured the group to release at least two more studio albums; instead, the label released the album Go Figure under the moniker SSV in 1997. Although the Sisters of Mercy were eventually released from their contract with East West, they have never been signed to another label nor released any new material, despite showcasing numerous new songs in their live sets. Former members of the group established the bands Ghost Dance and The Mission. http://www.the-sisters-of-mercy.com/ https://open.spotify.com/artist/4HxBVyHaUa60eCSsJWxwWR https://www.discogs.com/artist/83146-The-Sisters-Of-Mercy https://www.concertarchives.org/bands/the-sisters-of-mercy--2 Please follow us on Youtube,Facebook,Instagram,Twitter,Patreon and at www.gettinglumpedup.com https://linktr.ee/RobRossi Get your T-shirt at https://www.prowrestlingtees.com/gettinglumpedup And https://www.bonfire.com/store/getting-lumped-up/ https://app.hashtag.expert/?fpr=roberto-rossi80 https://dc2bfnt-peyeewd4slt50d2x1b.hop.clickbank.net https://8bcded2xph1jdsb8mqp8th3y0n.hop.clickbank.net/?cbpage=nb Subscribe to the channel and hit the like button --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/rob-rossi/support https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/getting-lumped-up-with-rob-rossi/id1448899708 https://open.spotify.com/show/00ZWLZaYqQlJji1QSoEz7a https://www.patreon.com/Gettinglumpedup #musicproduction #musicvideo #musical #musiclover #musiclife #musician #musicians #musically #music #musicstudio #musicproducer #musicfestival --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/rob-rossi/support

It started when i went to the website. "FLOODLAND BREWING" it read in all caps at the top. "Floodland is a brewery in Seattle" below. A spot to enter your email. You want to know more? There’s a text file FAQ with some basic points of info. That’s it. When I first came across the homepage—if you’d dare call it that—I had no idea what to expect. The business was started by Adam Paysse, one of the original partners of the city’s beloved Holy Mountain Brewing. He had decided to go on his own with this venture, taking over a modestly-sized storage space in Seattle’s Fremont neighborhood and filling it with barrels, focusing on a collection of barrel-fermented and mixed-culture beers. He released his first beers in 2018 to wild fanfare, and it really hasn’t stopped. What interested me in seeking out and chatting with Adam pretty much went right back to that website. He has a deep appreciation for his craft, and like the barebones appearance of his digital presence, is straight-forward in what motivates and excites him. He talks up his friends and partners, local farmers, and fellow brewers who inspire him. He worries about social media and line culture. He is wonderfully committed to the people he cares about and what he does for a living. He’s a fascinating guy, and one who doesn’t really talk publicly too much. It made for an incredible, wide-ranging conversation when we met in Seattle this spring. Spending an afternoon with Adam quickly introduced me to a personality I’m thankful to know, and happy to follow. In the Pacific Northwest, he’s got lots of fans, and if you haven’t heard of him yet, I hope this introduction puts him on your radar, too. This is Adam Paysse of Floodland Brewing. Listen in.

What a topic Mark, Ryan, and Evan discussed surrounding the issue of limited quantities of released beers and how breweries handle it.  Central to this is Floodland Brewing and how they handle keeping their beers out of the secondary market.  You may side with the brewer or with the consumer on this but we find this a great example of the controversy of the secondary market.  We did enjoy a Holy Mountain sour (where the Floodland brewer was before he started his own brewery), 4 Hands Brewing Madagascar Uganda variant, and some blind pours which challenged our palates.  Don't miss this one!  Cheers Provisionists!!

That's right, Paul and AJ have decided to talk about music again, a subject which they famously lack the words to discuss. But that won't stop 'em! AJ has challenged Paul to John Lennon's debut solo album, 1970's John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band, known for its direct and confessional lyrics; while Paul has challenged AJ to the middle album in The Sisters of Mercy catalogue, 1987's Floodland, a dark and alluring set of songs which may make no sense whatsoever. How much will Paul and AJ embarrass themselves? Tune in and find out!     Next: Fantastic Four? Don't get ahead of yourself.
