Midnight Train From Georgia is an inspiring and emotional journey through the life and career of William Franklin Guest, a founding member of Gladys Knight and the Pips. The book discusses William's love for music as a child growing up in a musical family and the formation of the group. The book explores the group's meteoric rise to fame, the challenges of the music industry, and the personal struggles of a man determined to leave his mark on the world. This is not just a story of Gladys Knight and the Pips; it's a universal tale of family, faith, love, loss, and the pursuit of dreams against all odds. Midnight Train From Georgia captures the heart of an era, the music that defined it, and the man who lived through it all. On tonight's program: Governor Ron DeSantis held a news conference in Coral Gables today to announce his legislative intentions to increase penalties for retail thieves and porch pirates; A measure up for consideration in the Legislature would ban civilian oversight boards for law enforcement and corrections officers; The Florida Commission on Ethics would see big changes under a bill that's moving through the Legislature; And the longtime head of the NRA is no longer Wayne LaPierre. Many are crediting the students who survived the Parkland High School massacre for that fact.

When The Tsunami of Justice Comes. The Unjust Are Mowed Down and Destroyed. April 30, 2022 | Imran Siddiqui | Justice News | I have always felt that audio does not lie, audio is naked, no matter how hard you try to dress it up, you can't, you can always catch a person's true character in their audio, the sound, the spoken voice will say it all. This is one of those episodes where I don't have to say much. I chose to do audio so I can show people the reality of what we can really become, as human beings - and mostly we are worse than animals. A clear example of what I'm writing about is not just in the case of John Merritt a "Florida Shame" or any other external reference link that I will give you to source. Instead I will give you the pure audio, in it's closest raw form, and because you are reading this, then you do have a brain cell and you can think, listen and understand what's being said and then make up your own mind. This is an audio of John Merritt's parole hearing which was a public hearing that took place on April 27 2022 at the Florida Commission on Offender Review in Tallahassee, Florida. Merritt's Private Investigator Dennis Forrester of the Beacon Investigative Solutions was there along with John's attorney Gray Thomas, John's sister Darlene Roy and myself. What we heard at the end was absurd and shocking to the senses. This is what you get after 36 years of wrongful conviction. In the episode, Mark Baratto sits down with Judge Edwin A. Scales, III to the Third District Court of Appeal, who also happens to be a DJ on local station 104.1. We talk about his love for music and how he never gave up on his dream, while still being a local District Court Judge. More on Ed Scales, III Ed's show—oddly named “The Ed Scales Show”—airs on US-1 Radio most Sundays from 11am-2pm. The show has aired on US-1 Radio for over two decades and continues the station's tradition of nontraditional radio, Florida Keys-style. No one (other than Bill Becker) has been on-the-air at US-1 Radio longer. Management of the station is as puzzled as everyone else as to why this is the case. No matter how often we change the locks to keep Ed out, Ed finds a way into the studio to do his show. Trust us, if it weren't for his impeccable musical taste, we'd call the cops! While it's hard to describe Ed's show with any particularity, suffice to say that he plays a wide variety of great rock and roll. Ed regularly sneaks down into the US-1 Radio music vault to play stuff you just don't hear every day, and he also mixes in the hits so that there's truly “something for everyone”. He even peppers the show with entertaining features like “Ed's Peeve of the Week” and “This Date in Rock and Roll History”. So, tune in on Sundays for “The Ed Scales Show”…..and give us a shout if you know a good locksmith. Now on to the Judge part... On October 18, 2013 Governor Rick Scott appointed Judge Edwin A. Scales, III to the Third District Court of Appeal, making him the first Monroe County attorney ever appointed to the Court. Before his appointment, Judge Scales was a sole practitioner in Key West, Florida. His practice concentrated in the areas of appellate litigation, commercial and real estate litigation, administrative law, and mediation. Additionally, through his “of-counsel” affiliation with the GrayRobinson law firm, Judge Scales served as the General Counsel to the Florida Citrus Commission. Prior to moving to Key West, Judge Scales was a shareholder in the Lakeland, Florida law firm of Lane, Trohn, Bertrand, & Vreeland, P.A. In 1998, Judge Scales became the General Counsel for Historic Tours of America, Inc., a national site-seeing company with headquarters in Key West, Florida. From 2011 thru 2013, Judge Scales served on the Florida Commission on Ethics and was its vice chairman. In 2005, Monroe County's attorneys elected Judge Scales to serve on the Florida Bar's Board of Governors, and he was re-elected to that position four times. He served on the Bar's Executive Committee for three years and chaired both the Bar's Legislation Committee and Citizen's Forum. In 2006, Judge Scales was appointed by Florida Governor Jeb Bush to the Board of Trustees of the Florida Keys Community College. He was reappointed to the Board by Governors Crist and Scott. He chaired the Board from 2007 to 2009, and again in 2011 and 2012. From 2000 to 2005, Judge Scales served on the Federal Judicial Nominating Commission for Florida's Southern District. In 2009, he was appointed by Governor Charlie Crist to the Judicial Nominating Commission for Florida's 16th Judicial Circuit, and was reappointed to the JNC by Gov. Rick Scott in 2012. In 2001, he was elected to serve a four-year term on the Key West City Commission, and in 2003 was appointed to the Florida Keys Tourist Development Council, where he served two years as Treasurer. Since 1999, Judge Scales has hosted the weekly "Ed Scales Show" heard on Keys radio station US-1 (104.1 FM - www.us1radio.com). He has an extensive background in both radio and television, hosting "The Legal Beagles" radio program in the Tampa Bay area from 1996 to 1998. Since joining the Court, Judge Scales has been appointed by the Florida Supreme Court to represent Florida's judiciary on the Florida Bar Foundation Board of Directors, where he chairs the Foundation's Audit Committee. Chief Justice Charles Canady appointed Judge Scales to serve on Florida's Judicial Management Council, the long-range planning committee for Florida's judicial branch of government. Judge Scales also served on the Board of Directors of the University of Florida Alumni Association, taught the complex civil litigation courses at Florida's College for Advanced Judicial Studies, has taught courses as part of the faculty of the National Judicial College, and regularly presents continuing legal education seminars to local bar associations. Judge Scales was born in Birmingham, Alabama, and was raised in Lakeland, Florida. He received his B.S. in Telecommunications with Honors from the University of Florida in 1988. While an undergraduate at the University of Florida, he was appointed by Governor Bob Martinez to serve on the Florida Board of Regents from 1987 to 1988, and was tapped into the Florida Blue Key leadership honorary. He also served as the "mike man" for the Florida Gators and is a 2-year UF Varsity Letterman. In 1988, he was named the University of Florida's outstanding male graduate and was named to the University of Florida Hall of Fame. In 1991 he received his J.D. from the University of Florida College of Law. While in law school, Judge Scales served as President of the University of Florida Student Body, he received the Bill Fleming Memorial Award for outstanding service to the University of Florida community, and he received the Book Award for Florida Administrative Law demonstrating academic excellence in that area. Welcome back to America's leading higher education podcast! In this episode, sponsored by MDT Marketing, we welcome Lynn Mulherin, Commissioner, Florida Commission for Independent Education! Lynn talks to us about why online education is here to stay. Like so many other leaders in the space, she makes a distinction between online and remote learning - and how the pandemic pushed (not pulled) institutions to the online competitive market. Understanding the adult market is critical, their motivations are different and it's critical that higher ed leaders define what they mean by "student" when they are discussing consumers. Lynn says it's time to move from disruption to transformation - the trends are accessibility, affordability, and scalability! Students will still benefit by moving up the learning ladder! Lynn Mulherin leverages the power of technology and teams to advocate for student access, equity and education evolution. Her career includes twenty years as an executive at University of Phoenix and fifteen concurrent years as a commissioner for the Florida Commission for Independent Education. Rita Barreto, the former chairperson of the Florida Commission on the Status of Women, is an empowered woman, a published author, an award-winning consultant, and the visionary and founder of Top Tier Leadership. She was born and raised in Miami, Florida. In her professional life, she spent 23 years in corporate America as a high-level director. Then, she took a leap and started her own business, Top Tier Leadership, 25 years ago. In this episode, Rita shares her experiences as a 6-year commissioner. In 2020, she became the chairperson of the Florida Commission on the Status of Women. This Commission includes women of different races, socioeconomic backgrounds, professions, and geographic locations. Due to the diversity of the Commission they are able to come up with so many different solutions and approaches. She is proud to say that everyone in the commission didn't skip a beat, even in the midst of the pandemic. They even held virtual events that enabled women to engage and be heard. They discovered that when they have a virtual event, more women attended than when they organized an in-person one. Rita developed and gathered more data concerning the status of women, which could be utilized as a tool for future project decision-making. Rita has also produced an annual report containing measurable data to aid in the development of policies to solve challenges that impact women and girls. For many years, women have been suffering from discrimination. Women are not allowed to vote and don't have the same rights as men. However, things changed 100 years ago as the suffragists fought for the rights of women. The suffragists pioneered equality and women's empowerment. Rosie and Rita talked about the 100 years of women's suffrage in this episode. Rita reiterates that this is a significant event as it reflects where women have been. It celebrates women's voices and the power to vote for someone to represent them in the government. Women's suffrage enables us to have a voice and to make changes. The Florida Commission on the Status of Women awards two major awards: Florida Women's Hall of Fame and Spirit of the Community Award. While many may be familiar with the Women's Hall of Fame award, many may not be familiar with the latter. Rita shared that the Spirit of the Community Award is a way of recognizing women who are currently volunteering in their communities with pure motivation. To nominate someone visit fcsw.net and complete an application and be sure to quantify what the nominee did in the community. A total of 12 women are selected. The Commission also has a video and essay contest for the youth related to women issues. Both boys and girls up to high school age can submit a video and essay. In 2020, the Commission purchased a kiosk that allows visitors to the State Capital to view the Women's Hall of Fame awardees. Prior to 2020 visitors could only view this information by visiting the Women's Hall of Fame wall at the Capital. Towards the end, Rita suggests her favorite book, Leadership Challenge by James Kouze and Barry Posner. She loved this book as it is research-based and discussed the five characteristics of an admired leader: inspire a shared vision, model the way, challenging the process, enabling others to act, and encouraging the heart. She also advises everyone to pick one area to work on and once mastered move onto another characteristic. In closing, it is important that we help each other rather than forcing our own way to the top. Have pure motives. The change starts with you because the only person you can change is you! #Women #100YearsofWomenSuffrage #FloridaCommissionontheStatusofWomen #FCSW #Chair #VotingRight #Example #RoleModel #Pioneer LinkedIn │ Top Tier Leadership │ Florida Commission on the Status of Women
