In episode 194, Prep Dish founder Allison Schaaf discusses one of the advantages of meal planning, and how it provides many opportunities to add variety to your meals. Allison offers seven top ways to diversify your plate such as: Think Seasonally: Looking to produce that's harvested in the fall and winter can lend to cooking up more soups, stews, and chilis when the temperature drops, and doing more grilling, or making a summer salad the basis of your meal in the warmer months can add some seasonal variety to your meal prep. Change the Protein: Can you substitute something else instead of your usual go-to, or try a different cut of meat? The farmer's market might offer something different, or try visiting your local grocery store's fish counter to see what you haven't tried yet. If you use the Prep Dish meal plans, try swapping out the protein in a family favorite meal to add variety. Taste the Rainbow: Color can be a great way to incorporate variety into your diet. There are different nutrients represented in the natural pigments of foods, and adding in a diverse range of hues to your meals can up your nutritional game. Look to New Cuisines: We tend to gravitate toward a certain favorite cuisine profile and add it as a heavy rotation when we're making meals. Perhaps Mexican food or Italian makes its rounds weekly in your home. If you've avoided cooking up some recipes because they seem too involved or complicated, you could be missing out on a variety of new flavors that you'd otherwise enjoy. Is there a new cuisine you could try? Add Texture: There's a tendency to offer up softer foods, especially when cooking for kids. However, we're doing them a disservice by avoiding tougher or crunchier foods because children and adults alike can benefit from deep jaw stimulation through the process of chewing food. Try representing many different types of textures when planning your family's meals. Temperature Check: Consider temperature when meal prepping. As a nod back to seasonal meal prep, planning out a chilled gazpacho in the heat of the summer, or a soothing bowl of soup to ward off the winter's cold can add just the right variety your family needs. Change the Composition: How are you serving up your meals? Assess whether you usually navigate toward stir-frys, or perhaps the plate is often served up with a protein, vegetable, and starch separated out. See how mixing up the way food is served offers more variety in your meals. Meal Prep expert Allison Schaaf shares 5 simple food waste solutions to help you throw away less food at home. 1. Make a Soup This is an excellent way to use up leftover veggies! If you have leftover cooked veggies, I recommend throwing them in a blender and making a pureed soup. You can of course use leftover proteins or rice or pasta in a soup as well! 2. Freeze for a Smoothie This works well for any fruit and for many vegetables, like zucchini, as well. Try to catch the fruit right before it goes bad and throw it in a freezer for a smoothie. 3. Make Broth You can use scraps like onion and garlic peel, carrot and celery scraps, etc. to make broth. I like to keep the scraps in the freezer so they're ready whenever I want to make broth. 4. Feed to the Animals! If you have animals, you may be able to offer scraps to them! Our goats love banana peels and apple slices. Almost anything the goats won't eat, we give to the chickens. 5. Composting Anything we can't give to the animals, we compost. Bonus - Prep Dish meal plans (or any intentional meal plans) will help you not to buy food you won't use in the first place. We put a lot of time into making our meal plans strategic so you're not buying anything you don't need. Prep Dish founder and mom of two, Allison Schaaf, shares how she adjusts the weekly Prep Dish meal plans to meet her family's needs. She walks through the January week 3 Super Fast meal plan and how she makes substitutions and edits quantities to make the most of the meal plan. Meal Planning Tips - How to Customize a Meal Plan to Work for You Quantity - My go-to is to double most of the recipes. My family eats most of our meals at home so we generally eat each meal once for lunch and once for dinner. There are some items I don't double though, like garlic and fruit, as I usually already have those items on-hand. Subs for Preference - I often sub lettuce for collard greens for wraps as it's easier for my kids to eat. Kid-Friendly - I sometimes add extra carbs to make sure the meals have enough carbs for the kids. For example, I like to do a 50-50 mix of cauli rice or broccoli rice and regular rice. Protein - I sometimes switch up the protein based on what I have from Costco or Butcher Box. I also double or even triple the amount of protein to meet my family's needs. This is also a great place to comparison shop in terms of prices for different cuts of meat that week. Sauces - I often double the sauce recipes because I love to have a homemade sauce on-hand to liven up meals. Allergies / Intolerances - I sub walnuts and pecans due to an intolerance. We include subs for common allergies, like nuts, in our weekly subscriber newsletter. Spices - Over time, you won't have to buy the spices every week as we use many of the same spices from week to week. Are barefoot shoes worth it? My best tips for meal planning and prepping. What would I do as ruler of the world? What's the one book to rule them all? All that and more in this podcast. This podcast is a Q&A, but it's a bit different from the kind you'll typically find here on Muscle For Life. In my usual Q&A episodes, I take a question from email or Instagram and then fully answer it in an episode of the podcast every week. However, over on Instagram, I've started doing weekly Q&As in the stories, and it occurred to me that many podcast listeners might enjoy hearing these questions and my short answers. So, instead of talking about one thing in an episode, I'm going to cover a variety of questions. And keep in mind some of these questions are just for fun. :) So if you want to ask me questions in my Instagram stories, follow me on Instagram (@muscleforlifefitness), and if I answer your question there, it might just make it onto an episode of the podcast! If you like this type of episode, let me know. Send me an email (mike@muscleforlife.com) or direct message me on Instagram. And if you don't like it, let me know that too or how you think it could be better. Many of us think meal planning has to be more complicated than it actually is. In this episode, I'll discuss five common meal planning myths and discuss why they're not true so you can simplify your meal planning process.Myth #1. You must make a new recipe each night of the week-utilize leftovers-prep food ahead on the weekend-new recipes only 1-2 nights per week-otherwise use recipes Myth #2 Meal plans are complicated and take a long time to create-try using a 2-3 week cycle menu-as time goes on meal planning gets quicker Myth #3 Grocery shopping is time consuming-once you have a meal plan creating a grocery list is quick-go to the same grocery store so you are familiar where items are located-don’t waste time going down unnecessary isles at the store Myth #4 Meal planning is a dreaded chore-saves time in the long run-can be fun to create a dreaded task-use positive attitude can change your mindset Myth #5 You have to plan seven meals per week-use leftovers -order out so you don’t have to prepare all seven nights per week Helpful links:FREE 1:1 discovery callGet the Keys to Goal Setting Success hereYou can find me on IG here Join the FB Group

In this week's episode I am chatting with Christine Pittman of COOKtheSTORY. We are chatting about meal planning and meal prep, and as the author of over 40 cookbooks, she is definitely an expert in these areas. Christine started blogging recipes and cooking tips over 10 years ago, and she has a gift for simplifying instructions and making awesome dishes totally manageable. As a less-than-confident cook, I am ALL about simple and manageable. We chat about how to make meal planning work for your family, and I get her insights into which counter-top cooking appliance is her favourite - Instapot, Air Fryer, or slow cooker. I can honestly say, she inspired me to cook more often. And that is saying a LOT, lol. Enjoy! You can find the full show notes, Christine's bio, and her contact info at www.momcaplife.com/podcast.

We’re taking a deep dive into meal planning this week. From how to make meal planning work in real life, common mistakes, specific mindset strategies, and action steps, this episode is packed with information to help you meal plan (even if you hate the idea right now)! Key Takeaways No Fail Tips for Meal Planning (for People Who Hate Meal Planning) 1 | Let Go of Perfect There is no such thing as perfect meal planning. Let go of unrealistic expectations and rigid plans in favor of simplicity, and work within the context of your real life. Action Step: Can you think of a specific example when perfect meal planning or following a rigid plan kept you from meal planning? If so, how can you reset expectations and try again? 2 | Know your Why Keeping in mind why you are meal planning and cooking at home can help keep you on track and motivated over time. If your why includes goals for the future, see if you can add a few that are more immediate. Action Step: Make a list of why you want to meal plan and cook at home. Then add a few immediate outcomes to the list. 3 | Simplify Complicated recipes and long ingredient lists are a sure why to burnout and ditch meal planning altogether. Instead, try simplifying. Think of recipes in terms of the Essential Six, and Meal Map instead of meal planning. Simplifying the process will allow you to know what you need at the grocery store and then have ingredients on hand to throw together meals in minutes. Action Step: Think about ways you can simplify meal planning. Try adopting the Essential Six and Meal Mapping approach and see if it makes things easier. 4 | Make it Enjoyable Take meal planning off the dreaded chore list and move it into the self-care category. Pour yourself a cup of tea or glass of wine, put on some good music, and take a few moments to prepare for the week in comfort. Action Step: Brainstorm a few ways you can make the process of meal planning more enjoyable and nurturing. 5 | Enlist Help There is no rule you need to do everything yourself. Invite others in your life to help with the process, whether it’s picking up groceries or taking something off your plate. Action Step: Think about ways you can invite help when it comes to meal planning. Then reach out and ask! 6 | Anything is Better Than Nothing In the ideal world we’d all have every meal planned and ingredients on hand for effortless cooking. Since the ideal isn’t always possible, just start with something. Plan one dinner. Batch cook one recipe. Start small. Then see how far you can go. Action Step: How can you adopt the anything is better than nothing mentality this week? You don’t need to wait for the ideal, start now, start small, and enjoy the ride. Happy New Year! In this podcast, I talk about the 4 mindset shifts that must happen in order for you to start a vegan journey in the new year. Get all of the resources mentioned in this episode here http://www.brownvegan.com/podcast/17-4-mindset-shifts-to-go-vegan-in-the-new-year Write down why you want to go vegan - Is it for ethical, health or environmental reasons? Maybe it's a little bit of everything. Take a few minutes and write down your reasons and visualize how your life will look after the transformation. Having this purpose on paper will give you something to refer back to when you get discouraged. Write it down, make it happen! Make the decision - If you don't decide to go vegan, you will always make excuses about why you can't do it. When you make the decision to take this step, you're more likely to research and take action. There's so much power in that declaration! This journey is NOT perfect - Please don't beat yourself up! You will fall. You will feel overwhelmed. Some days cooking will be the last thing you want to do! Hold on! You got this! Always remember progression over perfection! You need a meal plan - There's really no way around this one. You must plan your meals in order to stay on track. Use Pinterest, Findingvegan, Google and library books for ideas. You can also check out my recipe page for suggestions. Also, check out this previous article with 5 Meal Planning Tips for New Families
