I never told my parents. I never told anyone. You said you were in such a dark place…What flipped the light bulb on for you?One my dad came crying to me and in a very sincere and loving way helped me understand that I was not only hurting myself. I was hurting my family. “I am only hurting myself” is the biggest lie someone with disordered eating tells themself.  I started to educate myself. My mom had me put more input into what was made for dinner and planning out meals. I went on to study nutrition in college and absorb everything I could about food and how it affects the body and brain. What would you tell parents?Break the secrets and the hiding wide open. Ali has been studying Intentional Creativity for the past five months and is a Functional Medicine Coach that works with us at Musette. I have been sharing with her about the way we pass on information in our lineage, the spirit of guardianship and how we create our lives. What a better way to share about our lineage than to read from one of our ancestors in the movement, Lenore Thomas Straus. She is the one who trained Sue, who is the one who trained me, and I get the honor of training many of you. In this reading I also discovered some of the ‘romance' ideas that Sue brought to her work, as well as the animistic nature that Lenore brought to her work. With Great Love in my heart, Shiloh Sophia Lenore is the one in the middle, this is when she came to teach us meditation, Sonoma 1975. We talk about her journey, and how she dealt with these very intense illnesses while being far away from her home base of the US. We cover: -Figuring out why she wasn't feeling well, and putting the pieces together to begin the healing process -What it took to come out on the other side of chronic illness -Why building community is so important, no matter where in the world you are living -Her work now to support other women with similar issues What's even more exciting is that she details the whole breathtaking, powerful, and inspiring journey in her new book, which you can grab here: https://amzn.to/3seEC1n. Tribe Sober - inspiring an alcohol free life!

Even though we offer our members a lot of support already we're always on the look out for new benefits. So these days apart from yoga, meditation, coaching, hypnotherapy, art therapy and accountability groups we can offer our members a functional medicine coach. A Functional Medicine Coach can help us with the transition between drinking a building a healthy lifestyle.  We all know vaguely what we need to do to be healthy but a Health Coach will personalise that plan for you and then ensure that you put it into action! So Tribe Sober's new Functional Health Coach is called Laura Gujadhur  We began by clarifying the difference between functional medicine and conventional medicine. Laura explained that conventional medicine is disease management and treatment of symptoms whereas Functional medicine looks at the root cause of disease An example would be going to a conventional doctor with a rash – that doctor would be unlikely to ask you about your diet, your stress levels and whether you've had allergy tests -he would probably give you a cream to calm down the rash but he wouldn't have got to the root cause of whats going on So functional medicine looks at the root cause of disease and illness and starts from there Conventional medicine is something we resort to when we are already sick Whereas functional medicine encourages you to work on your health so that you don't develop chronic diseases… You become the architect of your own health Laura's interest in health and wellness began about 5 years ago when she quit drinking A member of her family was diagnosed with depression and immediately put on anti-depressants which didn't sit well with Laura About that time she had stumbled across a book called The Ultra Mind Solution by Dr Mark Hyman In this book he explains that when he heals someone's gut and sorts out the imflammation the cognitive function improves and depression and anxiety go away As an ex nurse married to a doctor this came as a revelation to Laura – they never learned anything like this in medical school Laura decided to approach functional medicine in the same way that she had approached sobriety – she would read everything she could get her hands on After all Annie Grace's book “The Naked Mind” had been such an eye opener for her and made her realise that Big Alcohol are inundating us with false messaging Her research into Functional Medicine made her realise that conventional medicine was simply driven by Big Pharma and that she had been naïve not to question it during her medical training and career. Laura's decision to quit drinking for a month came after a party when she woke up with a hangover and thought…enough She white knuckled her way through the month and used the time that she saved (by not drinking) to read everything she could. Her belief systems around drinking had already been overturned by The Naked Mind and she realized that she couldn't go back to drinking Laura threw the book at her sobriety and like so many others who have succeeded she treated it like a job. She told her husband she wouldn't be entertaining or going anywhere for three months as she wanted to concentrate on her reading. We all learn differently so it can be helpful to reflect on our personal learning style as we approach the difficult task of giving up alcohol and learning to navigate society without it. There are 4 distinct learning styles identified by Honey & Mumford in 1986. Activist Theorist Pragmatist Reflector So we all learn how to navigate our alcohol free journey in our own way and shouldn't be comparing our progress with others… just keep trying and it will come together. Back to Laura.  What I found interesting was the fact that once she'd done all her research and reading she was absolutely ready to make a firm decision and her mantra was:- "Never Question the Decision" I think that's such a helpful strategy which will stand her in good stead if she has a craving or is under pressure from others to drinking… She approached her sobriety with the same gusto and enthusiasm that she used to approach her drinking- focusing on what she was gaining rather than losing by leading an alcohol free lifestyle. However Laura did go into full blown sugar addiction when she quit drinking and wishes that she'd had a functional health coach teach her how to transition which would have resulted in her feeling a lot better sooner. These days Laura is qualified as Functional Health Coach. She talked about the 4 pillars of health Diet/Exercise/Stress Reduction and Sleep and emphasized that a Health Coach could ease the transition into the alcohol free lifestyle and help to avoid a cross addiction. As she said we all know broadly what we should be doing to stay healthy but the value of a health coach is that she will ensure that you implement and stick to the right eating plan and exercise regime. We agreed that coaching is super valuable to keep people on track - especially for women.  Laura feels that many women tend to focus on what they haven't done rather than focusing on their achievements She said that anyone who has joined Tribe Sober should be proud of themselves,  just admitting that they may be a problem is a huge first step. And then I couldn't stop binging and then I HAD to purge to relive myself of the guilt and disgust I felt for eating food. Cutting out certain foods made me feel clean.  It took me decades to realize this need to feel clean stemmed from sexual abuse I experienced from a close relative.  Parents need to know that sexual abuse is often a trigger for eating disorders…Because of shame, confusion and guilt. I never told my parents. I never told anyone. What did your parents do during these years? Mom noticed I wasn't eating. Parents showed so much love, but in the 80's eating disorders not much was known about them. So they searched for answers!Saw counselors…nothing worked because I would lie to the counselorsParents eventually took me to a facility 45min away of specialists. I still wasn't ready to change, but it was the best place they could have taken me. Have very open conversation with them. “You are only as sick as the secrets you keep.”Come from a place of love not judgement.  They are already feeling so much shame.Help them connect what food does for their body versus telling them food is good or bad. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jNvkSi0XrL0Help them understand how it is affecting their health and their familyEducate yourself and offer resources to your loved one so they can educate themselves too. Get help from professionals and know that it might be years of healing. Please consider clicking below to make a one time donation to help "Monday Mindset With Isha Warriors" reach more people across the world!Donate Here

I am a huge proponent of clean eating leads to clean thinking. Just because we are entrepreneurs, doesn't mean that we have to compromise on our diet, exercise, gut health and internal homeostasis. For example, I make sure that my flour and sugar consumption throughout the day is minimum. I make sure that I exercise 90 minutes a day for 5 days a week. And I keep talking about it across social media as well as inside ATEPS. And I advocate how clean eating leads to clean thinking and that leads to more focussed choices and decisions, which eventually makes more money. I am able to serve my clients better via clean eating. I am able to come up with high quality cognition and high value thoughts for the creation of coaching content and modules for my clients. So, one of our students/clients asked me if I could do a podcast on Clean Eating and Clean Thinking. And I immediately said yes. The only name that came to my mind who I could invite to this episode as a guest was of my friend and colleague, Sreevardane Sivasankar. Sreevardane is a Functional Medicine Coach and Gut Health Expert. The way she explains how gut health is the master seat of our neurological functioning is incredible. She breaks down the whole complex web of how our day to day food habits affect our gut microbiome. And how that influences the production and functioning of our neurotransmitters, thereby affecting brain health and cognition. But not just that. In this conversation, we move over several complex domains that are miraculously interconnected and leads us to finally understand, how the way to the brain is through the gut. What You'll Learn from This Episode. Why Gut Health is Imperative. What food should we eat to think clearly. Superfood - what are they and how to they impact us. The role of Gut Microbiome. How as humans we are creatures of collaboration. How are neurotransmitters created. How to ensure high functioning brain health. After listening to this episode fully, I am certain each one of you would want to address your gut health and get an expert opinion immediately. They play a role in virtually every function of our body. There are 4 different categories:Water soluble vitamins- vitamins that dissolve in water and can be easily flushed outLess likely to reach toxic levelsB and C vitaminsFat soluble vitamins- vitamins that need to be absorbed and are stored in fat tissue or in the liverCan be toxic to body if too much is absorbedVitamin A, D, E, K (ADEK- acronym to remember)Macro minerals- minerals needed in a large quantitycalcium, magnesium, phosphorus, sodium, chloride, potassium, sulfurTrace minerals- minerals needed in a smaller quantity but just as important!zinc, copper, iron, manganese, iodine, seleniumAll of these are crucial to the function of our overall body function and health. However, there are two common reasons for impaired absorption that Bernadette mentions.Lifestyle issuesImpaired digestion can result from eating in a “sympathetic” manner rather than “parasympathetic”Our digestive system functions at its best when we are calmed and relaxed, which allows our parasympathetic system to be stimulatedWhen we eat too fast, on the go, or distracted (TV or cell phone) we prevent our system from releasing the proper hormones, stomach acid, and enzymes to absorb our foodThe lack of stomach acid results in an inability to break down food and proper nutrientsPhysical issuesInflammatory diseases such as Celiac or Inflammatory Bowel Disease alter the absorption that can take place along our intestinesThese diseases damage the microvilli, or fingerlike projections, that line the intestines and allow for better absorption to occurSince most of our absorption occurs in the stomach and small intestine, the location of the issue determines the micronutrients that are affectedCommon micronutrients insufficiencies due to Gutsy issues are iron, magnesium, B12, and vitamin A.For more information on stomach acid, check out this article.Micronutrients In DepthWhile all micronutrients play a vital role in overall health, here are a few that are critical to maintaining good gut health as well as the best ways to incorporate them into your diet.B vitaminsContributes to better gut absorption and specific bacterial reproductionGood sources- liver, animal productsVegans may have to supplementVitamin AImmune response- most of it housed in the gutPrevents immune system from overreactingGood for autoimmune disorders or inflammatory conditions (Crohn's, Colitis)Good sources- liver, dairy, fish, carotenoids (orange food), spinachVitamin CGut barrier function- better for absorption and prevention of toxinsBalance of good and bad bacteria in the gutGood sources- veggies and fruit (broccoli, red bell pepper, oranges, kiwi, strawberries…)Vitamin DImmune health and anti-inflammationProtective effect on intestinal lining (leaky gut)Good sources- sun exposure!!!ZincHelps make stomach acidNecessary for proper enzymatic releaseGood sources- meat, legumes, nutsCalciumActivates the intrinsic factor, a protein required to absorb B12 in the intestineGood sources- dairy products, soybeans, seedsAs you can see from the list above, Bernadette prefers incorporating micronutrients in the form of food rather than supplementation. She recommends eating a “whole food diet” of minimally processed food to increase the amount of micronutrient absorption in your diet.Added source: HERE and HEREMore on Vitamin D and Sun ExposureSince Vitamin D is critical for the maintenance of the intestinal lining, it is important to be getting enough everyday. One of the easiest ways to get vitamin D is from direct sunlightwhich worries many people. The dangerous part of sun exposure is actually not the sun itself but the UV rays that causes damage to our cells.Bernadette recommends consuming more foods high in antioxidants, which can help our body minimize the negative effects of the UV rays. Foods that contain a high level of antioxidants, such as fish and salmon, are helpful in protecting your skin and cells from damage.Another helpful tip is to slowly work yourself up to more sun exposure a day. The goal is to eventually have at least 15 minutes a day, but allow your body time to slowly adjust. Bernadette recommended an app called D-minder, which helps to track your vitamin D intake based on individual factors and needs.Symptoms of Micronutrient DeficienciesThere are many different symptoms associated with micronutrient deficiencies, and many of them build off one another. Symptoms are our body's way of communicating with us”Bernadette Abraham Here are some common symptoms found with individual micronutrient deficiencies. As always, do NOT supplement without the guidance of a professional or concrete bloodwork. Taking a single micronutrient in excess can be more harmful than good if not needed.Low B12- low energy, tingling in extremitiesLow magnesium- frequent headaches, muscle tightness and spasms, sleep issues, high blood pressure, GERDLow iron- fatigue, coldness, numbness, hypothyroid issues such as constipation, brittle nails, dry skin, infertility, hair lossOverall gut dysbiosis- mood swings, anxiety, skin issues, sleep issues, hormonal problems (often estrogen dominant)Remember to get guidance from a health profession if any of these symptoms resinate with you BEFORE supplementing. Dr. Sheri Marshall is a dietitian who became a Family Practice Physician and is now a Functional Medicine Coach. Get in touch Here! sheri@bestofhealthfunctionalmedicine.com Her Story: My health journey began when I was a Junior in high school at which time I was overweight, medically borderline obese. One day, my Dad came home from the Doctor. The doctor had told him, “your cholesterol is high. If you don't change your diet, you are going to have a heart attack.” Our whole family changed how we ate to support him. I was amazed and excited to learn that changing our lifestyle could improve our health. Due to my being overweight and my father having high cholesterol, I decided to go to college and study nutrition . My love and passion for wellness and prevention of disease started. I went on to become a registered dietitian. When I graduated from my internship, the only opportunities for dietitians were in the hospital. I got a job at Princeton Medical Center. One day, I went to see a patient who had had a heart attack. He looked me in the eye and angrily said ”I don't care if I eat baked or fried chicken!” Then asked, “Am I going to live until tomorrow?” It was clear to me that when patients are sick enough to be in the hospital, they are often not in the right frame of mind for discussing food choices. I thought, “I have to find a more effective way to help people.” I thought, “If I become a physician, I can find and help people with high blood pressure and high cholesterol make lifestyle changes to prevent heart attacks.” I went to medical school and then went into private practice as a family practice physician. Many patients told me, “ Just give me pills.” That made me want to cry. Most people were not ready to make a change. Again, I thought, “ I have to find a more effective way to help people.” My own health journey took a turn. Even though I mostly ate healthy foods, exercised, and kept my weight at goal, I developed headaches and migraines. I required daily medication to try and prevent them. During my search to improve my headaches, I discovered functional medicine. Functional medicine is a comprehensive lifestyle program, it treats the root cause of disease and provides a path to wellness and vitality. After applying the principles to myself, I no longer needed daily medication for migraines. Following my passion for wellness and prevention of disease, I pursued Functional Medicine training. Now, I have created the most effective way to help people. I have opened my own business called Best of Health Functional Medicine so I can share this healing program with clients who are ready to make lifestyle changes. I currently offer two programs: a Best of Health reset program and a lab guided personalized supplement protocol program. If you are a health seeker, I can be reached at sheri@bestofhealthfunctionalmedicine.com My goal in life is to be the best version of myself, and I strive to help you fall in love with taking care of yourself. Planning a long trip or moving abroad for a job or for fun (aka #lifegoals)? Figuring out the healthcare situation in a new place can be both daunting and frustrating. That's where Expat Health Code comes in. Especially if you have been working with or using Functional or Naturopathic medicine, it can be hard to find these options outside of the US or Europe. That's why today's guest, Vashti Kanahele, MS, CHHC created Expat Health Code. Bringing together a Naturopathic Doctor alongside functional health coaches, Vashti has developed a comprehensive experience for the expat community to access the healthcare they may be missing. After living in 6 countries outside of the US, from Iraq to Nigeria, Vashti understands the ups and downs and pitfalls of trying to figure out healthcare in different countries. She shares her experiences (some of which will surprise you!) and explains how to navigate a new place to build yourself the best healthcare team. You'll also learn where she got the best healthcare, and where it was the toughest. This is a fascinating episode for those Americans living outside the US, or anyone who moves to a country different from their place of origin. Or if you are like me, and plan to eventually move abroad, this episode will give you the health foundations you need for the eventual move. Find out more at the Expat Health Code website or on their IG. In her private practice, Vashti works with women with complex chronic illnesses including mold illness, Lyme, and autoimmune conditions. I am very excited about this podcast for a number of reasons. Our tag line on purelivingfamily.com is "We give you permission to take better care of yourself, so you can take better care of those that you care for." As Special Needs parents our energies are challenged constantly. I never knew how much stress was possible to feel until Theo was in his PANDAS flares. I think it is time to take our own advice, specifically for myself as the Dad. We talk about how to raise your testosterone through diet, nutrition, and lifestyle change. Testosterone is our Life Force, it is our Life Energy for Men's Health. As a Functional Medicine Coach it is important to me to follow the Functional Medicine model in my overall health. The Functional Medicine model focuses on natural organic nutrition and lifestyle changes to optimize your health. We are launching a new project alongside Wild Warrior Nutrition with the hashtag #wildwarriordad.
