Alternative medicine devised by Frederick "Fritz" Smith in the 1970s
POPULARITY
Developed by Fritz Smith, MD in the early 1970s, Zero Balancing is a powerful body-mind therapy that teaches skilled touch to bring balance to body structure and energy. A session typically lasts 30 to 45 minutes and is offered through clothing. The practitioner uses finger pressure and gentle traction on areas of tension in the bones, joints and soft tissue to create fulcrums, or points of balance, around which the body can relax and reorganize. By addressing the deepest and densest tissues of the body along with soft tissue and energy fields, Zero Balancing helps to clear chronic tension and blocks in the body's energy flow. ZB has been shown to reduce stress, amplify vitality and promote better postural alignment. An osteopathic physician and surgeon, Dr. Smith was fascinated by the healing power of touch. During the late 1960s, Dr. Smith studied at Esalen Institute with many of the forerunners of the body-mind therapy movement, including Ida Rolf. He met J.R. Worsley, founder of the College of Traditional Chinese Acupuncture in England, whose demonstrations "cracked" Dr. Smith's beliefs in the purely Western medical model. During this period he also began to explore yoga, meditation, spiritual teachings in India, Eastern energy medicine, and quantum physics. Dr. Smith studied with J.R. Worsley and became a licensed acupuncturist in 1972, earning both bachelor's and master's degrees in acupuncture, and becoming a fellow in the Chinese College of Acupuncture. Dr. Smith's keen observations of anatomy and energy as a force in the body led him to develop the manual therapy system of Zero Balancing. Dr. Smith has been practicing and teaching Zero Balancing throughout the world for more than 45 years. He's the author of many articles and two books, Inner Bridges: A Guide to Energy Movement and Body Structure and Alchemy of Touch: Moving Towards Mastery Through the Lens of Zero Balancing How Can Zero Balancing Help You? Zero Balancing can help relieve body aches and pain, release restrictions in movement, and provide lasting relief from emotional distress to improve overall quality of life. Zero Balancing can also be helpful with specific goals such as relief from back pain, improving concentration or sleep, releasing unwanted stress, eliminating old behavior patterns, or boosting well-being. Zero Balancing works in conjunction with medical therapy and is not a substitute for it.

The mysterious capacity of human beings to express life, to heal, to grow, to awaken, and to evolve completely fascinates me. Using my hands, my heart, and my mind to facilitate healing is a true privilege and I am grateful for every patient and every student I have the opportunity to work with. I began my higher education with a degree in biochemistry. While working in the field of medical diagnostic research and development, I looked into a test tube one day and realized I would not find the answers to my queries about life and humanity therein. I had to work with actual people, their bodies, minds, and spirits. Studying chiropractic at Los Angeles College of Chiropractic gave me an excellent medical education, and the skills to amplify the natural healing ability of the body through spinal evaluation and adjustment. I augmented that education with specialized training in the Gonstead Chiropractic Technique which involves in-depth bio-mechanical analysis and specific, directional adjusting techniques for optimum effectiveness and efficiency of healing. I started my chiropractic practice in 1990 and soon thereafter began to study Zero Balancing as well. Zero Balancing is a unique, hands-on, bodywork system of healing. It combines the Western view of medicine and science from the field of osteopathy with Eastern concepts of energy and healing from the field of acupuncture. ZB affects the whole person (body, mind, and spirit) by providing both structural therapy and energy medicine simultaneously, and thereby accessing the body's “interoceptive” mechanism of conscious awareness, self-referencing, and physical, as well as psychoemotional, resilience. It is life changing for patient and practitioner. One of my strongest passions is teaching Zero Balancing to other healthcare providers and anyone who wants to learn about the power of conscious touch and energy medicine. In today's episode, join us on a journey with host Alex Greene as he shares his experiences and insights into somatic trauma work. Alex's fascination with trauma work began during his study of Structural Integration Bodywork, where he discovered the potential of using the body as a gateway to address psycho-emotional history and trauma. Through deep tissue approaches, he not only improved musculoskeletal alignment but also facilitated emotional release and self-awareness. Delving further, Alex explored trauma from a neurobiological perspective during the "neurobiological revolution." Groundbreaking theories such as the Polyvagal Theory and the works of Peter Levine and Dr. David Berceli provided new insights into the role of the nervous system in trauma. This led Alex to discover the transformative potential of neurogenic tremors and the therapeutic technique of TRE (Tension/Trauma Releasing Exercises). In his practice, Alex integrates various modalities to offer a holistic approach to trauma therapy. Zen Integration Bodywork and Somatic Coaching combine hands-on bodywork techniques like Structural Integration, Myofascial Release, and Zero Balancing with non-hands-on approaches such as Somatic Experiencing, Internal Family Systems, and Dynamic Attachment Repatterning Experience (DARe). Through this synthesis, Alex aims to support individuals in their healing journey, promoting healing, release of tension, regulation of the nervous system, and fostering secure attachments and resilience. Drawing from his Zen practice and trauma education, Alex integrates mindfulness, presence, and non-judgment into his therapeutic approach, allowing clients to deepen their connection with their inner selves, develop self-awareness, and tap into their innate wisdom and resilience. Joining us today is President Emeritus of the Zero Balancing Board of Directors, Michael Oruch, an established Zero Balancing teacher and practitioner based in New York City. Michael views Zero Balancing as a vehicle for health, wellness and positive change both personally and collectively, and was inspired to teach Zero Balancing (or ZB) following years of study and tutelage with the modality Founder, Dr. Fritz Smith. We discuss how Zero Balancing uses fulcrums to clear vibration held in the bone, joints and the energy field of clients, how working with bone connects to our ancestors and why releasing held tension in the body catalyzes self-reorganisation. We address the key ZB concept of "interface" - how the practitioner navigates the boundary between structure and energy through touch. Michael shares his insights regarding how healing is about accessing that which is hidden, as we free ourselves from suffering and resolve trauma in the body and the mind. Key aspects of Zero Balancing are discussed including expanded states of consciousness and what it means to “hurt good'. Interestingly, we explore how a touch-based modality can be used for remote healing through the use of surrogates. Michael has taught Zero Balancing extensively in both the US and internationally, and has additionally spent many years studying Qigong, Tai Chi and related forms, which he has taught at New York University. He has made significant contributions to the ZB community as a Mentor Faculty Advisor, through teacher trainings, and serving on various committees. He has also personally developed three Zero Balancing classes and two Zero Balancing training DVD's. Michael believes Zero Balancing can help a practitioner to be more present and clear in the world, with themselves, and each person they contact.www.mozbnyc.comLiked what you heard? On this episode, Erika shows Sebastian the checks and balances that come into play when the body is dealing with structural imbalances. At 19, Erika moved to New York City to continue a career in post-modern dance. After suffering a back injury and autoimmune disorder, she began to re-evaluate her relationship with her own wellness. She began exploring alternative types of movement, functional medicine and eastern philosophies and found a wealth of knowledge that provided deep relief. She turned to science-based bodywork like Structural Integration and Zero Balancing. Erika has helped manage the holistic health of thousands of clients. With a focus on the integrity of education, she opened a certification school in 2010, and created the comprehensive 600+ hour Erika Bloom Method Certification Course. Now, Erika and her instructors have grown this global brand to serve as trusted, supportive health experts through their in-person sessions at Erika Bloom Studios in Los Angeles, the Hamptons, and Turks and Caicos as well as through the launching of the Erika Bloom Digital Membership and virtual private sessions.

Linda Wobeskya was pursuing a career as a professional contemporary dancer when she broke her foot during a dance class. Although she didn’t realize it at the time, the fracture in her foot would break open her life and lead her to her true calling. The course of her healing exposed her to both Physical Therapy and acupuncture. The Physical Therapy she received led to her achievement of a Master’s Degree in Physical Therapy in 1986. Although her Physical Therapy training focused solely on the physical body, she knew intuitively that injury or illness can affect every level of a person. The acupuncture she had received led to her study of Zero Balancing, a therapeutic modality that would allow her to express this holistic awareness with direct hands-on treatment. She began using Zero Balancing with her patients immediately following her first class in 1992. Linda is also a dedicated teacher and has been drawn to teach whatever she is passionate about. After years of experience teaching dance and Physical Therapy, she certified to teach Zero Balancing in 2004 and has taught Zero Balancing all over the United States. She became the director of the Zero Balancing Certification Program in 2007 and joined the Board of Directors of the Zero Balancing Health Association in 2014. She has developed classes in the Zero Balancing curriculum that focus specifically on Zero Balancing touch. The clients in her private practice benefit from an integrative approach that combines Zero Balancing with the Zero Balancing forms of craniosacral therapy and visceral manipulation. Tools mentioned by Linda: Zero Balance Training (https://www.zerobalancing.com/professional_training) - Learn how to address deep patterns in the musculoskeletal system by handling energy and structure simultaneously. ZB will add energetic engagement to your structural work or structural engagement to your energy work. David Lauterstein is Co-director of The Lauterstein-Conway Massage School in Austin, TX. He has taught, for over 35 years, Deep Massage: The Lauterstein Method and Zero Balancing in England, Costa Rica, and throughout the U.S. He is one of the most highly respected educators in the massage therapy realm, inducted in 2011 into the Massage Therapy Hall of Fame, and awarded “Teacher of the Year” by the American Massage Therapy Association in 2013 and the Alliance for Massage Therapy Education in 2014. He is the author of the three books: “Putting the Soul Back in the Body”, “The Deep Massage Book: How to Combine Structure and Energy in Bodywork”, and “Life in the Bones: A Biography of Dr. Fritz Smith and Zero Balancing.” He has been faculty member of the Zero Balancing Health Association since 1996. His background prior to massage therapy was in philosophy and music composition. He is the composer of the massage CD, “Roots and Branches.” He embodies in his practice, teachings and writings the essential unity of art and science in massage and bodywork. David studied music composition and philosophy and was influenced by the Human Potential Movement in the 60s He received bodywork and learned that the body and emotions imparted a lot of wisdom David explored massage, structural bodywork and zero balancing When David first met Dr Fritz Smith, the founder of Zero Balancing, he was endeared by his short stature and his humble way with his peers and students The importance of an energy exchange and right livelihood Fritz talked about the layers of anatomy corresponding with the layers of energy in the body: wei chi/ qi under the skin, muscles and organs depicted by meridians and the bone being the deepest, densest tissue, carrying the largest energy charge Working with bone brought about more depth and sensitivity David has studied with Fritz at least once a year since 1986 “You just need to meet the person, you don’t need to perforate or penetrate their tension” If your mind, heart and body are clear when you’re working, you don’t experience pain or burnout “The right simple touch at the right moment can change everything”, David Lauterstein The renaissance of touch. Touch connects us. There’s nothing else in the world that connects structure and energy except touch. Touch connects the physical body, but also more than the physical Touch is the first sense to develop in the embryo In a world dominated by virtuality, there’s a desperate need for actual reality, and touch is a way of this The increasing fear around touch, when we need human connection People heal from inside out The best bodyworker has full respect for the other person Healing comes from the same place as ‘whole’ The sickness of the health insurance system Dr Fritz Smith was the son of a chiropractor and was raised with conscious, loving touch - nurturing makes a difference to our wholeness as human beings Fascia - ‘liquid crystal’. It’s responsive and thixotropic, which when pressure, energy or temperature is increased, becomes more fluid Accessing altered states whilst grounded by touch during bodywork In ‘The Poetics of Reverie’ by Gastron Bachelard, there’s a fatigue that comes from just living in one reality - it’s an important expansion of consciousness to experience various states In ‘Ecstasy: Understanding The Psychology of Joy’ by Robert Johnson, every person has a deep need for ecstatic experience eg religious experiences, watching a beautiful sports game etc ZB recognises that the bones are a repository for spirit Optimal health is the goal Humberto Maturana wrote about the ‘Biology of Cognition’, and described human beings as autopoetic, which requires art, science, and making Influence on Fritz by Swami Muktunanda “There are a million ways to touch people” Connect with David: www.david-lauterstein.com The Lauterstein-Conway Massage School: www.TLCschool.com The Deep Massage Book: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/0967303486/ref=as_li_qf_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=avnitouch-21&creative=6738&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=0967303486&linkId=b308cab385d2b59db4e7e11dd96d35af Life in the Bones: A BIOGRAPHY OF DR. Jon Bernie's first awakening experience at the age of sixteen led him to spend many years practicing in the Zen and Theravadan Buddhist traditions, first as a monk in the lineage of Shunryu Suzuki Roshi, and then as an early student of Jack Kornfield's. In the late 1980s, Jon's spiritual trajectory was profoundly altered when he met Jean Klein – master of Advaita Vedanta and Kashmiri Yoga with whom he studied intensively for an extended period. Jon subsequently spent time with H.W.L. Poonja and Robert Adams, both direct disciples of Ramana Maharshi. Jon's spiritual development was also greatly aided by Brother David Steindl-Rast, who, along with Thomas Merton, was one of the first Christian monks to seriously practice in the Zen and Tibetan traditions and has since been instrumental in building interfaith networks worldwide. After Jon met Adyashanti in 2002, his spiritual journey came to fruition, and subsequently Adya asked Jon to teach. In addition to his work as a spiritual teacher, Jon is a certified Zero Balancing practitioner and a teacher of the Alexander Technique in private practice in San Francisco since 1981.
