A sermon from Exodus 28-31 by Will Morris.
The Trump administration's massive new tariff pronouncements, on top of its pullback from the OECD's global tax deal, have cast doubt on the future of global tax policy efforts. The two-pillar OECD-led agreement seeks to create a 15% global minimum tax for large multinational corporations and change the way the companies allocate their profits among countries. While the US is still taking part in some negotiations, it has rejected key elements of the deal that it says infringe on US tax sovereignty. The administration has especially taken issue with the deal's undertaxed profits rule, which countries can use to tax companies from other jurisdictions if they aren't paying the minimum tax there. And it has raised objections to countries' imposition of digital services taxes. On Wednesday, President Trump announced a 90-day pause on higher reciprocal tariffs that hit many US trade partners earlier in the day, and raised duties on China to 125%. The conflict could spark a reaction away from global tax policy negotiations and toward more bilateral, one-on-one dealings between countries as nations look to retaliate or cut a deal with the US. On this episode of Talking Tax, reporter Caleb Harshberger talks with PwC global tax policy leader Will Morris and Michael Plowgian, a partner at KPMG and former deputy assistant secretary for international affairs at the Treasury Department. They discuss the current state of negotiations, the complexity of numerous moving parts, and prospects for the US's ongoing role vis à vis the European Union and other nations. Filmmakers around the world wowed us with creative stories, intriguing plots and outstanding techniques. Obviously, many of us film fans see movies in theaters througout the year, whether it be at a national chain or at an independent, arthouse theater - or both. Some of us are even hitting film festivals, special screenings, and for the truly unhinged cinephiles, film marathons. For these kind of events to happen though, there have to be some mad geniuses behind the scenes. Those people are film programmers, and they do so much for our the culture of our fandom; from tracking down film the best quality prints available, to figuring out who owns the rights, to actually making the screenings happen. A lot of times their success comes down to the sheer passion they have for these offbeat, awkward, or just downright strange and fucked up motion pictures that makes them want to pass that along to new viewers. In other words, helping new fans Discover the Horror! One of those mad geniuses is Will Morris, who is one of the programmers for the world-famous Music Box Theatre in Chicago. Will has been programming The Music Box of Horrors a 24-hour horror marathon for close to a decade now, as well as programming their yearly January Giallo festival, and much, much more. We invited Will to come on the show to not only explain a little of what he does, but why. Get ready for a fun and wild ride. If you've seen the banners in the Carmody Center, you likely know Gonzaga had one of its more memorable football seasons in 1959 that culminated with a City Title. But unless you were there, you probably don't know the crazy sequence of events from November 22, to November 27th. Three football games in six days! All at the legendary Griffith Stadium (where Howard University Hospital is today). Wait until you hear about the round robin tournament, the tie-breakers, and finally a draw from a hat decided who would face the vaunted Eastern Ramblers. Quite a few future College and NFL Stars would play that week, including our guests from Gonzaga's Class of 1960: Jon Morris (15 years AFL/NFL Lineman 7 time All Pro selection), Darryl Hill (recruited by Lee Corso to join the Maryland Terrapins in 1963 becoming the first African-American college football player in the South). Also joining the Zoom are teammates Charles Shields, Henry Partridge, and Brendan O'Neill, Sr. All these guys were great friends who loved being around each other, and playing hard for each other. With the Gonzaga Smoker coming up, we also asked about their classmate, the late Stu Long '60. For information about this years in person gathering click here. Epilogue: 1959 was a different time to be sure. The 1954 Brown v Board of Education ruling made school segregation illegal, but five years later, progress was slow. Gonzaga was ahead of most prep schools of that era, as Dr. Gabe Smith '54 became the first African American to graduate from Eye Street. Gabe paved the way for young men like Darryl Hill '60 to feel welcomed at Gonzaga. Hill would go on to break the ACC football color barrier at Maryland. The City Championship game in basketball continues to this day, but the City Title football game was discontinued after race riots broke out following the 1962 game. The integrated but mostly white St. John's team won against an outmatched Eastern team. With over 50,000 in attendance at D.C. Stadium (later renamed RFK), 400 people were injured. D.C. area writers like John Manasso (1994) and Dave McKenna (2011) both wrote compelling pieces that looked back at the 1962 game and wondered if the City Title Football game would be revived. Click the links to read on more. Thanks to Will Morris '67 for his research assistance in putting this episode together. ------ As mentioned at the end of the episode: We want to hear from you! For our Christmas week episode, we want to include your voices sharing Christmas greetings. Use your voice memo device, record this: Hey, this is ____________ from the Class of ___ wishing all my Gonzaga friends a Merry Christmas from _________ (where u live) (feel free to ad lib if you like and name check some classmates) then send the voice memo to podcast@gonzaga.org Thanks!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
November 5, 2021, a football rivalry renews, Gonzaga will play St. John’s for the 100th time under the lights of the recently upgraded Buchanan Field. “Go, Gonzaga, Beat St. Johns!” For decades students exhibited their purple-pride and school spirit with banners scattered around the DC Area... hung from overpasses, bridges, and other strategic places, exhorting the Eagles to Fly High! In 1957, a few intrepid students raised Gonzaga’s profile by hanging a “Beat St. John’s” banner out of two of the open windows of the Washington Monument. For members of the class of ’67, who arrived on Eye Street in 1963, these public displays of Gonzaga pride were part of the lore of Gonzaga versus St. Johns. The 1966 Gonzaga Football team was off to a great start, and the Booster Club seniors knew they had to do something big for the St. John's game. But how do you top the Monument stunt of 1957? Best friends, Jim Nelson '67 and Will Morris '67 share their memories. Will was the senior quarterback, while Jim headed up the Boosters Club. This is the story of the Capitol Banner Caper: the clever planning, the disappointment after getting caught, the unexpected next day triumph, and the hilarious punishment, it's all here. Next week in Episode 9 - more GGBSJ fun is on the way. We'll cover how in 1969, the class of '71 upstaged the seniors by turning the Monument Purple and White.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In sports, it's a given that perfecting your craft requires consistent coaching. Is there an industry more important than education that this same concept should apply? Athletes receive coaching on a daily basis, but unfortunately teachers aren't yet afforded those same growth opportunities, relying on quarterly assessments rather than consistent feedback. Technology is changing the game. Like in sports, teachers are now able to watch their own game film and learn from industry experts how to take their game to the next level. In this episode, I sit with Will Morris, Founder and CEO of edConnective. His team is leveraging technology to provide consistent professional development opportunities. Founder Bio: Will received his Master of Education from the University of Pennsylvania's Graduate School of Education. There he researched instructional coaching as a promising lever of teacher quality. Before UPenn, Will spent a year working with a cohort of 30 African American freshmen as an Urban Prep Fellow in a Chicago Charter School. During his year in Chicago, Will became a Starting Bloc Social Innovation Fellow and participated in a social entrepreneurship institute that sparked his desire to create systemic impact through social innovation. On this special edition episode of Tap into Tax, we focus on a topic gaining more visibility in 2021 in the C-suite - tax sustainability and governance. Sustainability is not a new topic; however, recent developments are pushing it forward in multiple areas for US multinationals to think about. Margie Dhunjishah, PwC’s Tax Reporting Strategy Leader, and Kevin Levingston, PwC’s Tax Policy Services Leader, lead a discussion on this topic and why it should be a high priority for the C-suite in 2021. They are joined by Will Morris, PwC's Deputy Global tax policy leader, and Jeremiah Coder, a director in PwC's Tax Policy Services practice specializing in tax sustainability. Kevin, Margie, Will, and Jeremiah explore the many different parts of this equation - stakeholder capitalism, ESG, transparency, data, controls -- and how it all relates to tax. Breaking into the syndication is by no means an easy feat and without experience or capital, many aspiring syndicators lose motivation or quit before they've even properly started. Will Morris found himself in the same position, where, despite having experience in the multifamily space as a contractor, he just could not seem to crack the syndication code. This did not deter him and instead, he saw it as an opportunity to enter syndication in an unconventional way.

SSOC intern Joel Rasmussen flew all the way from Adelaide, Australia to join the Barbell Logic podcast, en route to a Starting Strength seminar in Wichita Falls. While he was in town, Matt and Scott chatted with him about establishing a home gym out of his garage in Adelaide, his coaching experience as an intern with SSOC, and how he managed to rehab his "stuffed" back. Joel discovered strength training first with the Stronglifts 5x5 program, but he found himself frequently injured due to poor lifting technique. He eventually looked into Starting Strength as a resource to fix his form, which led to signing up with Starting Strength Online Coaching as a client. Joel made excellent progress with SSOC, but unfortunately suffered a freak back injury when he fell off a ladder while doing handiwork around the house. He sustained multiple grade 3 herniations in his lumbar spine. He experienced severe back pain, lost sensation in his foot, and exhibited "foot drop." Joel went to the doctor for imaging and treatment; they told him to expect a lengthy rehab process with continuous pain, at least six months. Undaunted, Joel soldiered on with his training, and after consulting another SSOC coach and DPT, Will Morris, he was able to creatively use partial pulls and other loaded movements to regain most of his strength, and in a much shorter time period than the doctor had advised. His experience with back injury recovery has informed his coaching practice and given him the confidence to overcome future setbacks in his training. Joel now coaches out of his home in Adelaide as well as handling online clients at SSOC.
