156 - Phil Manzanera (Roxy Music) In episode 156 “Have Guitar Will Travel”, presented by Vintage Guitar Magazine, host James Patrick Regan speaks with guitarist and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member Phil Manzanera from Roxy Music. In their conversation Phil talks a little bit about where he lives in Sussex in England and his neighbors David Gilmore, Bill Bruford Then he talks guitars, particularly his Gibson Firebird VII and what he was using for amps back in the day and now and the guitar he's still craving. Phil tells us a bit about his book “50 Years of Music” and what he's using for gear for the book tour and where to get the self published book. Phil describes growing up in Havana Cuba during the revolution… and learning the guitar amongst the chaos. He also describes living in Hawaii just as it became a state and how that inspired a song “Hula Kula” for Roxy Music. Phil describes playing through a Hiwatt amp while Brian Ferry was singing in Roxy Music. Phil tells us about how he ended up in England and how he befriended David Gilmore and he disspells the rumors that he joined Roxy Music initially as a guitar tech. Phil describes being ahead of his time or at least being the cutting edge of fashion and musical trends and how everyone from Roxy Music at this advanced age are still making music and he describes what being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame means to him and the band. And finally Phil tells about still playing nylon string guitar mostly to his grandchildren. Pallbearer [00:34] "An Offering of Grief" Sorrow and Extinction 20 Buck Spin SPIN048 2012 Full-length debut from this heavy doomy band from Little Rock AR. Easily one of the best records of 2012. Ray Charles & Milt Jackson [09:06] "Soul Meeting" Soul Meeting Atlantic SD 1360 1962 Two great tastes that vibe great together. Featuring Ray on piano, Milt on vibes, Kenny Burrell on guitar, Percy Heath on bass, and Art Taylor on drums. This one was written by Jackson, with illuminating parts from both Milt Jackson and Kenny Burrell. Curtis Harding [16:08] "Freedom" Soul Power Burger Records BRGR600 2014 Debut outing from this Atlanta musician. Describing his sound as "slop 'n soul", this one track has a definite Arthur Lee feel. Lou Rawls [18:49] "A Whole Lotta Woman" Soulin' Capitol Records T 2566 1966 Not a whole lotta love, not a whole lotta Rosie, but a whole lotta woman. John Coltrane with Red Garland [21:27] "Theme for Ernie" Soultrane Prestige 7142 1958 One of Coltrane's showcases for his distinctive sheets of sound style. Joined here by Red Garland on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and again Art Taylor on drums. Les and Larry Elgart and their Orchestra [26:24] "You're My Thrill" Sound Ideas Columbia CL 1123 1958 Hailing from Pompton, New Jersey, these brothers developed their "Elgart Sound" in 1952 and released over half a dozen albums before parting after this album to pursue their musical interests. Mary Martin et al [30:02] "The Lonely Goatherd" The Sound of Music (Original Broadway Cast) Columbia Masterworks KOL 5450 1959 Now that's what I call yodeling! Pre-Julie Andrews obviously. Mary Martin was perhaps best known as playing the title role in the Broadway production of Peter Pan. Not sure how I knew this, but maybe it was due to living in New York for 20 years naking Broadway trivia inescapable. The Sinceros [33:23] "Take Me to Your Leader" The Sound of Sunbathing Epic EPC 83632 1979 The sticker on the cover says that this track is their featured single, so that's what I'm going with. Power pop-y new wave-y. Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass [37:10] "Casino Royale" Sounds Like... Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass A&M LP124 1967 You know I love a good shaggy dog of a film, and Casino Royale is definitely that. Well, the Daniel Craig version is too, but I'm talking about the 1967 comedy version with David Niven as Sir James Bond. Ravi Shankar [39:47] "An Introduction to Indian Music" The Sounds of India Columbia CS 9296 1968 (originally released in 1958) Re-released to tap into the growing interest thanks to the Beatles' interest in Indian music (specifically George Harrison). Relax! Simon & Garfunkel [43:56] "We've Got a Groovey Thing Goin'" The Sounds of Silence Columbia CS 9269 1966 Helped out here by The Wrecking Crew, including Glen Campbell and Joe South on guitar, Hal Blaine on drums, and Larry Knechtel on the Ray Charles-esque electric piano. Scott Walker + Sunn O))) [47:22] "Brando (Dweller on the Bluff)" Soused 4AD CAD 3428 2014 On the surface, it's an odd pairing, but as the music that fills this album suggests, it's a perfect pairing. Sunn O)))'s Greg Anderson and Stephen O'Malley had originally reached out to Walker about contributing to their 2009 album Monoliths and Dimensions but were unable to coordinate. Walker subsequently contacted about contributing drones to fill in the silence between his lyrics while working on his epic 2012 release Bish Bosch. Evidently, Sunn O))) brought their full stage equipment to Walker's studio for recording. If you are unfamiliar, it's a wall of Ampeg, Marshall, and HiWatt speakers with Ampeg SVT and Sunn Model T heads. Herb Alpert's Tijuana Brass [56:06] "The Girl from Ipanema" South of the Border A&M SP-108 1964 South of the border, down Rio de Janiero way. This is the audio from our video here: https://youtu.be/FWZmr1rE-yM Why do tape delay machines sound sooooo good? It’s a question we are delving into over a series of shows. We kick off with our personal favourite REAL TAPE machines. Erm, our only machines, in fact. Life too short for long YouTube videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below. COVID-19: This video was filmed long before the social distancing measures were advised by various governments across the world. Rest assured that all of us at That Pedal Show began observing social distancing and stay-at-home measures as soon as they were announced. Be well y’all! There’s just something magic about tape echo. Be it an Echoplex, Space Echo, Copicat or what have you, that – literally – magnetic blend of warmth and often idiosyncratic unpredictability is what puts the tear in your eye and the emptiness in your wallet. Both Dan and I have been on a voyage of tape discovery these past months; smitten by the sounds, maddened by the maintenance and confused at the question of why modern pedal simulations just don’t stand up. Or do they? So in this first instalment of (probably) three, we indulge in the tape machines themselves. Consider it a context setting siting lap of what’s to come. In Part 2 we will delve a little more deeply into the single-head Echoplex side of things and a bunch of modern pedals, then follow that up in Part 3 with a similar treatment of the multi-head Space Echo approach. No, we haven’t looked at the European-style Wems/Meazzis etc… maybe that’s one for the future. At present we don’t own any. Off we go then… please enjoy the episode! This is the audio from our video here: https://youtu.be/VdlWBu3jrIA You want a wet/dry rig, but you’re not sure what amps will work well together? And what about power, gain, phase and digital latency? We answer all that and more…. Life too short for long YouTube videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below. Welcome to the show! In this episode, Dan and I return to one of our favourite subjects: wet/dry guitar rigs. Definitions differ as to what wet/dry actually means, but for us it is this: First off, you are using two separate guitar amplifiers…Compression, boost, EQ, wah, overdrive, fuzz (all the ‘dry’ effects) go to both amps.Modulation, delay and reverb (all the ‘wet’ effects) only goes to one amp: we call this the wet amp. The amp that doesn’t get the ‘wet’ effects we call the dry amp. It’s pretty simple in theory, but you need to be aware of a bunch of things when choosing your two amps such as volume, gain, phase and (related to phase), digital latency. There’s EQ as well of course, but that’s really a matter of personal preference and taste so we're not getting into it here. In this video we use a fairly standard signal path…Guitar, overdrives, modulation, delay, reverb, tremolo, amps Viewed as the wet/dry signal path it’s this (sorry we can’t draw a diagram here, but let’s try text…)DRY SIDE: Guitar, overdrives, SPLIT (Humdinger) to Amp 1WET SIDE: Guitar, overdrives, SPLIT (Humdinger), chorus, delay, reverb, trem to Amp 2 Hopefully that explains it! This is the audio from our video here: https://youtu.be/4ElQmEL-IrE We try out the new cabinets in Universal Audio’s OX firmware update (November 2019), crank our 1973 Hiwatt DR103 and catch up with our old friend Tore Mogensen, formerly of TC Electronic Life too short for long YouTube videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below. Welcome! Regular viewers will know that Dan and I are deeply smitten with Universal Audio’s range of audio interfaces and plug-ins for recording: truly fantastic stuff that has powered TPS for around two years now. UA is also behind the much loved OX Box, a reactive load attenuator and speaker/cab/mic simulation software application for your valve amp. Dan and I went to Real World Studios to make some actual music with it when it came out. Check it out: https://youtu.be/g5Ly5O2MjfY And we made two tracks: Mick – https://youtu.be/HepnOBCsRs0 and Dan – https://youtu.be/rBLUJzYg-U8 Late in 2019 UA announced a firmware update for OX, adding some much requested Celestion Vintage 30 cabinets and a couple of other cool things. Even better, our old chum Tore Mogensen (formerly of TC Electronic) has finished his first year as a product manager at UA, so took the opportunity to drop in and walk us through it.   In the OX bits for the main bulk of the show, you’re hearing the OX direct output only. No actual mics or speakers. At the end of the show when we crank the Hiwatt, that’s the actual mic’d cabinet in the room.   Enjoy the episode!     Pedals & stuff in this episode…   Universal Audio OX UK & Europe: http://bit.ly/2JxqKmd USA: http://bit.ly/2ql9g9m   TheGigRig Three2One https://www.thegigrig.com/three2one   ZVEX Box of Rock Australia: http://bit.ly/35Fg4h8   Tru-Fi Colordriver http://tru-fi.com/ Australia: http://bit.ly/38SqzzP   Jam Pedals Waterfall UK & Europe: http://bit.ly/2MifNem   Diamond Memory Lane Jr http://www.diamondpedals.com/products/memory-lane-jr/   Fender Marine Layer Reverb UK & Europe: http://bit.ly/2E6IvWR USA: http://bit.ly/2Ddoksr   Peterson Strobostomp HD UK & Europe: http://bit.ly/2Ozf60o USA: http://bit.ly/2pHMvvY Australia: http://bit.ly/2lM39so   TheGigRig G2 https://www.thegigrig.com/g2   * Why do we have preferred retailer links? This is the audio from our video here: https://youtu.be/m49jK-49BFA In this episode we discuss the concept of ‘Always-On’ pedals with some practical examples of how you might use them. Lots of people use a particular overdrive or preamp; perhaps a compressor or a slapback echo as their always-on pedal. We propose that they fall into four basic categories that may be functional, tonal or both. 1. Buffers; 2: Tone/EQ shaping; 3: Gain and dynamics; 4:A specific effect, eg reverb, delay etc.Clearly you can use any pedal as an always-on pedal, but here were are attempting to narrow the discussion a little bit in our area of all-round rock, blues and roots playing, and offer some useful ways to proceed if you’re new to this train of thought. No doubt there will be plenty of questions arising – Ladbrokes has great odds on a million questions about buffers again. We’ll address it in Monday’s VCQ. But if you’re confused just remeber three things: 1. Buffers give you noticeable high-end and presence back if your signal chain is suffering from capacitance-induced dullness. 2.… Make most vintage overdrives and fuzzes sound rubbish when placed before them. 3. If you use loads of true-bypass pedals chained together and no loop switcher, you might benefit from one… Try it before and after your overdrives. We prefer them after. And, 'What about EQ pedals? Surely they are a prime example of an always-on pedal?' Yes. We talk about EQ, but not necessarily in the context of a specific EQ pedal. Anyway, enjoy the show… Pedals & stuff in this episode… • TheGigRig Three2Onehttps://www.thegigrig.com/three2one • TC Electronic PolyTune 2 MiniUK & Europe: http://bit.ly/2jKaukTUSA: http://bit.ly/2k2Gu4BAustralia: http://bit.ly/2vn6b6N • Benson Preamp (special edition orange)UK & Europe: http://bit.ly/2YdumSeUSA: http://bit.ly/2WBF44vAustralia: http://bit.ly/2VVJu9l • Fender Level Set BufferUK & Europe: http://bit.ly/2VsxKeTUSA: http://bit.ly/2J1covvAustralia: • Taurus Servohttp://www.taurus-amp.pl/guitar/effects/white-line/servo.html • JHS CloverUK & Europe: http://bit.ly/2JBB546USA: http://bit.ly/2E3D1PAAustralia: http://bit.ly/2W1srTu • Keeley D&M DriveUK & Europe: http://bit.ly/2oTblU1USA: http://bit.ly/2rfACMdAustralia: http://bit.ly/2pUDUAE • Snouse Black Box OD2UK & Europe: http://bit.ly/2VCE9QL • Origin Effects Cali76 Stacked EditionUK & Europe: http://bit.ly/2vMuSdGAustralia: http://bit.ly/2HbYgAr • Boss DM-2w Waza Craft DelayUK & Europe: http://bit.ly/2hzsothAustralia: http://bit.ly/2vT8ulc • Catalinbread Topanga Spring ReverbUK & Europe: http://bit.ly/2mj3leKAustralia: http://bit.ly/2qVOTyJ • TheGigRig G2https://www.thegigrig.com/g2 * Why do we have preferred retailer links?
