Jason and Mikey sit down with Brianne Davis & Mark Gantt. Brianne and Mark have had quite the experience in Hollywood. From the highs of writing and starring in your own TV series to the lows of sex addiction & heavy drug use, they have seen it all. Mark started using drugs and drinking heavily in his teenage years, trying to escape the stresses of home. He stopped using drugs at 19, and reluctantly went into rehab and was able to stick it out. Brianne's addiction didn't come until her teenage years, where she learned how to manipulate everyone in her life, as she put it "snort & drink" people instead of drugs. She would get a thrill from lying and deceiving family members as well as her personal relationships. She wanted to use her body and appearance to her advantage, so this is what led her to Hollywood. Brianne's first lead role came in 2005 with the blockbuster hit "Jarhead" starring opposite Jake Gyllenhaal. She went on to star in many TV series and movies on Netflix, HBO, and Hulu. Mark was one of the early pioneers of the digital film era, where he got his start as various grips and techs behind the scenes. He eventually started writing, producing & starring in many of his own works on Lifetime, Crackle & more. At this same time, Brianne's sex addiction formed and was consuming her life in destructive ways. She doubted her self-worth and was reliant on others for her positive feelings. Brianne met Mark at a time where one of them was in recovery, and the other had yet to confront their disease. The symbiotic relationship soon formed between them to heal together in a healthy way, while trying to remove the stigma associated with sex and love addiction. It was tough to rewire her emotional process, but eventually, she overcame it. Mark has been sober for over 30 years now. Brianne has been free of her addiction for over 10 years now, and now they both hope to inspire others to come forward. Brianne has shifted her focus from acting to writing & podcasting. She recently wrote the book "Secret Life of a Hollywood Sex & Love Addict" in 2020, and quickly made the Amazon Best Seller's List. Lately, Mark has been focused on writing as well, including two upcoming Audible Original True Crime books, and currently writing & pitching two separate tv-series with Brianne. Brianne & Mark also launched the "Secret Life" Podcast in September of 2020, and haven't looked back. They are discussing all kinds of taboo & personal topics that people struggle with in their every day love lives. They are trying to break down the stigma with sex and love addiction, in hopes that more people will come forward and seek treatment as well as create open dialogues for people with trauma and addiction backgrounds. When you restrict on one type of addiction, you must watch for another addiction to take its place. It's a widespread occurrence that most addicts can identify with. Taking away the drink, drug or relationship isn't the solution; it only stops the destructive behavior. It's what's underneath the addiction and addressing the "why" that we start to heal. Like many people, there were addictions like food and sex that preceded the alcohol and drug addiction that happened later and were first addressed. But the feelings and thoughts were still there. Rue: I Was A Paid Escort For Men In Hollywood - “Everybody has sex,” says Rue. “The only difference is that I charged for it.” Rue was a sex worker in her early 20s, working for the madam of Heidi Fleiss. Even though that life is far behind her (she's married and an educator now), she still firmly believes in the decriminalization of sex workers. It's estimated that there are at least 1 million prostitutes in the United States and 40-42 million worldwide.______If you or anyone you know is struggling with addiction, depression, trauma, sexual abuse or feeling overwhelmed, we've compiled a list of resources at secretlifepodcast.com.______To find out more information about Brianne's book Secret Life of a Hollywood Sex & Love Addict, check out the website: https://secretlifenovel.com or At Amazon______HOW CAN I SUPPORT THE SHOW?Tell Your Friends & Share Online!Subscribe, Rate & Review: Apple PodcastsFollow & Listen Spotify | Stitcher | Google PodcastsSpread the word via social mediaInstagramTwitterFacebook#SecretLifePodcastDonateYou can also support the show with a one-time or monthly donation via PayPal (make payment to secretlifepodcast@icloud.com) or at our WEBSITE.Connect with Brianne Davis-Gantt (@thebriannedavis)Official WebsiteInstagramFacebookTwitterConnect with Mark Gantt (@markgantt)Main WebsiteDirecting WebsiteInstagramFacebookTwitter
Alexander Pope wrote, "to err is human, to forgive divine." Sometimes forgiving ourselves can be the hardest thing to do. Guilt is a feeling you get when you did something wrong or perceived you did something wrong. Shame is a feeling that your whole self is wrong. Releasing shame and guilt involves learning to empathize and forgive. When you can forgive and care for others, you'll learn to care for and forgive yourself. David Linaker is a shingling example of that truth. Change and freedom are possible. That's what we believe here at Secret Life. ______If you or anyone you know is struggling with addiction, depression, trauma, sexual abuse or feeling overwhelmed, we've compiled a list of resources at secretlifepodcast.com._____More about David LinakerAfter 21 years as a priest in the Church of England, during which time David fed a deep fascination with the human condition and received extensive training in coaching, mentoring, mediation and conflict transformation, David was delighted to be able to find an outlet for this in a coaching practice.David takes a ‘whole person' approach to his work, from the standpoint of extensive experience of encountering most of the challenges that are thrown at people during a lifetime. It's important for clients to feel fully comfortable with both the process and the outcome so that those outcomes are truly authentic and compelling.David finds a huge reward in seeing real liberation in the lives of his clients. This week on Talk Recovery Radio This week on Talk Recovery Radio Brianne Davis an author, podcast host and person in long term recovery from sex and love addiction joins us on Facebook live and Co-op Radio 100.5fm. About Brianne Davis Whether lighting up the big screen or calling the shots behind the scene, actor, director, producer, and writer Brianne Davis is one of the most electric talents to storm Hollywood by force. She recently wrapped two seasons as series regular in History Channel's "Six" and a role in the upcoming season of Netflix's "Lucifer." Originally from Atlanta, Brianne moved to Los Angeles to pursue her acting career. Her first lead role came in 2005 with the blockbuster hit Jarhead, opposite Jake Gyllenhaal. Her credits include recurring roles on Hulu's "Casual," TNT's "Murder In The First," HBO's "True Blood," as well as FX's "Nip/Tuck," "NCIS: Los Angeles," CBS' "CSI: Miami," ABC's "Desperate Housewives," and HBO's "True Blood." Not only an actor, Brianne is also an accomplished director and producer. Thriving behind the camera, as much as in front, she has produced five films with her production company Give & Take Productions. She has directed two features: "The Night Visitor 2: Heather's Story" and "Deadly Signal," which premiered at the Sites Film Festival in Spain. Brianne is the co-creator of three female-driven TV Series, "Take Back The Night," "Into Me You See" and "Secret Life." She's currently pitching them to networks with her producing partner/husband, Mark Gantt. Brianne recently finished writing her first book, "Secret Life of a Hollywood Sex and Love Addict, a roman à clef novel based on a decade in recovery, and a little creative license. The book arrives in 2021. In March of 2020, she published an article for the HuffPost about her ten years of recovery from sex and love addiction. She lives in Los Angeles with her husband, son Davis and their dog Bear. Brianne talks about how sex and love addiction can be very grey. It is not as simple as drinking or using drugs. Brianne says people who are sex and love addicts are addicted to people. Brianne explains sex addiction as people who are addicted to one-night stands, cheating in a relationship, having multiple relationships at once and having one foot in and one foot out in a relationship. Sex addicts are people who are more addicted to the sexual act of a relationship. Love addiction on the other hand is addicted to fantasy, romance, bad relationships, people who go back to the same relationship when they know the person is unavailable to be in a relationship. Someone who struggles with Sex and Love addiction has a progressive brain disease, people become addicted to people and to keep up the relationship they do sexual things to keep up the relationship. The fellowship people attend who are Sex and Love addicts is Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous. Brianne has been sober in the fellowship for eleven and a half years, and she talks about what her bottom line looks like. Brianne said her sobriety depends on her staying above her bottom line, her bottom line is things she was doing before she got sober. Brianne was not allowed to cheat on her partner, she was not allowed to text email or talk to any men whatsoever, also get rid of all men in her life completely. Brianne says she would have to go to a restaurant and look down and not make eye contact with the waiter because what she did was put out a kind of energy to flirt with others, and to intrigue with her. Brianne would walk down the street and make sure people look at her and notice her as she wanted everyone's attention she explains. Brianne says her first year of sobriety she did not work as an actor. Brianne said she could not be in character when she was an empty shell of a human being. Brianne explains it as like putting a mask on top of a mask on top of a mask, also her first year of sobriety she did not have sex with her boyfriend, who is now her husband. Brianne and her boyfriend had very clear boundaries at the beginning of her sobriety such as her boyfriend not being able to comfort her when she was struggling, and he could not be there for her when she needed him. Brianne says it was the best thing to keep the relationship was to let it go for a while to let her get well. If you are wondering if you struggle with sex and love addiction you can do a 40-questionnaire survey online if you go to google and type in “40 self diagnose question sex and love addicts anonymous”. Brianne's Website | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram Sex and Love Addiction Imagine if Sex and the City's Samantha was an addict and her drug of choice is MEN. Go on a hilarious, inspiring, and at times, shocking journey as Roxanne conquers her fears, changes her ways, gets closer to healthy relationships and embraces self-love a little more each day. After years of working as an image-obsessed actress in Hollywood, Roxanne finds herself at rock bottom from a disease that is anything but glamorous. In her first year of recovery, Roxanne has to take accountability for her past. From tales of being mistaken for a prostitute at the Hotel Bel-Air to botching a threesome attempt with an A-list celebrity, she must face the truth about herself and stop playing the victim. Roxanne's odyssey of using sex and love—as destructive and beguiling as an alcoholic reaching for a bottle—is a veritable rollercoaster of ups and downs, laughter and tears, and a true testament to facing your absolute truth and conquering your fears. So take a front-row seat into this complex world of sexual addiction, love addiction and the transformational power of releasing your shame and living a sober life. Secret Life of a Hollywood Sex & Love Addict has the vibrant, relatable vibe of chick lit, the soul-baring honesty of a memoir and the wisdom of a self-help book. In this unique roman à clef novel, Brianne Davis shares her own intimate experience with the transformational power of the twelve-steps, providing strength and hope for anyone who wants to change their life forever: The 12-steps of recovery are broken down to help both the addict and those that love them. Identifying and isolating behaviors of sexual addiction, and the road to sexual health recovery Looking inside and finding out the WHY. Dating sober and building a community of sober women. Love addiction, the willingness to be honest, self-care and becoming authentic. Practical tips and tools to enhance your life, let go of shame and embrace self-love. Brianne talks about her book “Secret Life of a Hollywood Sex and Love Addict” when she was asked why she wrote the book and why she wanted to write the book, Brianne responded by saying she was never planning on writing a book. Brianne did not want to break her anonymity and be a speaker and author but when she got to her 10-year sober mark she got this overwhelming feeling of being of service bigger than herself. Brianne's husband found a writing class that he suggested she take, and Brianne was very close minded at first. After being suggested again and again to take the class Brianne finally did and ended up writing the first draft of the book in 45 days. Brianne later wrote an article for the Huff Post and when it came out, she thought her acting career was going to be over because everyone would know she was a sex and love addict, but after the article came out, nothing happened. No one said anything and she realized how small she really was in this world and her sharing her story was not as big as a deal as she thought, and no one was going to judge her or she wont lose her job. Brianne explains one thing she did learn is that once she shared her story on a global stage, that last bit of shame she had went away, knowing her story is out there helping people. Buy The Book
This week, actress, producer, director, author, and host of the mental health podcast, Secret Life, Brianne Davis joins Hilary and Jason to talk about her 10 years of recovery as a sex and love addict. Brianne explains that she didn't know what she wanted to be when she grew up, but she knew she loved the feeling of having power and having control over her peers. Before she knew it, she would ruin good relationships and friendships in the quest for this “high” she received from the attention and validation of others. Brianne stresses how you can still be a sex and love addict even if you have not experienced abuse, multiple partners, or even a one-night stand. Ultimately, if you are continually making choices that are a detriment to your own life in a quest for love and acceptance, there may be an underlying issue. Today, Brianne discusses how after years of therapy she feels a much better sense of self and no longer requires validation from people and partners around her. Brianne provides a great deal of insight in this week's episode and sheds light on relationship issues that may be overlooked daily. Postpartum bipolar disorder, the mood disorder Leah was diagnosed with, is virtually unheard of. Postpartum bipolar is also known as bipolar, peripartum onset, and it's arguably the least known of the six postpartum mood and anxiety disorders. Most people who suffer from Bipolar Disorder tend to experience both the highs and lows. But Leah only experienced the high, manic side. Behaviors like being hyper-sexual, flirting, cheating, overworking, barely sleeping, and overcommitting herself were common issues that plagued her life. Shortly after her child's birth, she found herself uncontrollably acting out. She was put on anxiety medication, which only made matters worse. And ultimately found herself contemplating suicide. Being appropriately diagnosed with bipolar disorder can be very difficult. Leah still struggles with the guilt for putting those she loves through so much pain but continues to remind herself that she is not this disorder; instead, she just has this disorder. It isn't the only thing that defines her anymore. Reaching out and asking for help was the most significant step she could take for herself. Dealing with mental and physical health problems before she even hit her 20s taught Rachel a lot. She learned what she wanted out of life and about the things that helped her get through very dark times. And perhaps most importantly, she realized that you can never know what someone else is going through. People go through all kinds of shit that we don't know about. Rachel's goal is to make everyone's lives better by discussing all of that shit. Sharing, listening, and laughing about the tough stuff is the only way to get through.
