In our premiere episode, we will discuss the experience of being involuntarily childless in a pronatalist world, through personal experiences, and the need for change. Our guest for this episode is Hilary Fennell.   Hilary is an award-winning programme maker and journalist with extensive experience of working in television and radio as a series producer and director.  In her ground-breaking radio documentary, Childless, Hilary Fennell explores the realities and dynamics of being involuntarily childless in a child-centered society.   Her voice as a childless not by choice woman, is interwoven with the stories of six other women. Each of the women speak to their diverse journeys in coming to terms with living a life without children.   Currently, it is estimated that one in five women in Ireland will not have a child, by the time they reach age 45. It is further estimated that only 10% of these women are childless by choice (child free). Childless, focuses on the other 90% of women, who represent an often less represented group.    This group is often silenced by the taboo nature of this topic, which remains today, despite the number of women living without children, not by choice. Further, these statistics do not include other genders. A majority of countries primarily track the parental status of women only.   Societies have become obsessed with motherhood and the idealization of human reproduction, supported by pronatalist rhetoric, which is reinforced through policy, in the workplace and socially.   Hilary navigates the social, physical and emotional impact of childlessness throughout her documentary, with skillful artistry and a full heart, amidst the shadows of grief, a call for social change, and the lightness of learning to live a full and meaningful life.   Please join us to learn more about her incredible radio documentary, and the issues that matter most to those who are living without children, involuntarily.     Hilary Fennell is an award-winning programme maker and journalist with extensive experience of working in television and radio as a series producer and director. Her work runs the gamut from current affairs to arts and human interest and has been in competition at many festivals worldwide. Hilary has worked in both the Irish State Broadcaster RTÉ and the independent sector. As a journalist, she been interviewing and writing for various national media for over twenty years.  She is also a recognised fiction writer, recent prizes include The Sean O'Faolain Short Story Competition.  Hilary also lectures in Broadcast Production at the National Film School at IADT and does presenting and voiceover work.  She originally graduated from Trinity College Dublin with an honours law degree (LL.B, Bachelor in Laws) and qualified as a barrister from The Kings Inns Dublin (BL, Barrister-at-Law). Hosted by industry analyst Johanna Koljonen, it delves deep into the rapidly evolving film industry. The 2022 Nostradamus Report: Imagining a Sustainable Industry - published this May - is looking at the near future of the screen industries in the industry's broader macroeconomic, social and cultural context. In this episode, host and author Johanna Koljonen gives a brief recap of the report's key findings discussing where we are on sustainable business models and unsustainable labour practices. With guest speaker Louise Vesth, the conversation dives into the current market situation and the challenges it poses for arthouse films. Facing those challenges, this episode is also addressing the question what a film needs to be theatrical. As the report also highlights the urgent issue of the industry's state of mental health, the Danish producer shares how working environment issues in the film industry could be handled in a different way. Louise Vesth is considered one of Denmark's leading film producers. She graduated from The National Film School of Denmark in 2001, the same year she started working for Zentropa. Vesth has been the producer of Lars von Trier's films from Melancholia (2011) onwards, including Nymphomaniac Vol. 1 and 2 (2013), The House that Jack Built (2018), and the upcoming third and final installment of the legendary tv-series, The Kingdom – The Kingdom Exodus (2022). She also produced the first four movies in the massively successful series of Department Q movies from 2013 to 2018. As she was also behind the Danish blockbuster comedy Klown in 2010, she is the producer behind five of the biggest Danish box office hits of the last decade. Among her other notable producer credits are Nikolaj Arcel's Oscarnominated A Royal Affair (2012) with Mads Mikkelsen and Alicia Vikander in the leading roles, Arcel's Truth About Men (2010), Peter Schønau Fog's You Disappear (2016), and most recently Christoffer Boe's romantic drama A Taste of Hunger (2021). Johanna Koljonen is a media analyst, broadcaster, and experience designer based in Sweden. Lilias Fraser was the first Australian to study at the National Film School of France who honed her skills on nation-building industrial documentaries of the 1960s, and in 1970 she made one of Australia's first land rights films, This is Their Land. When the Camera Stopped Rolling is a must-see documentary and Jane should be commended for such an honest and raw insight into her personal relationship with her mother. Jane is a multi-award-winnning filmmaker and cinematographer. She's shot films and documentaries and a tonne of music videos for artists like Prince, U2, Mary J Blige, Usher and INXS. Jane's directing work includes the award-winning short, Roadside Café and the SBS documentary Sixty Thousand Barrels. When the Camera Stopped Rolling is Jane's first feature documentary. Jane is so open during this interview. We discuss everything from Jane's childhood, being compared to her mother, her relationship with other members of her family and how they've responded to this film, and how the local film community reacted to her mother's death.

Annie Doona Chair of Galway Film Fleadh is ”In The Room” with 52 Jokers Wild. S3E15 We have reached another milestone. This time we celebrate our 100th episode of "In The Room". This week our guest is Annie Doona, Chair of the Galway Film Fleadh and recently Chair of Screen Ireland. Annie has a wealth of experience in film education as she was for many years the chair of the National Film School, part of the Institute of Art, Design and Technology in Dún Laoghaire, in Ireland. Our conversation with Annie spans the issues relating to building a trained workforce who are equipped with the necessary skills to join the film industry, how women still struggle to find opportunities in film and the rise of the studio in Ireland as more streamers buy up real estate due to the boom in demand for more quality film content. The final segment looks at the importance of film festivals for up and coming filmmakers, not so to watch films but to build the ever-important network of contacts that could lead to the fruition of that special passion project. #FILMACADEMY #FILMFUNDING #FILMPODCAST

EPISODE 160 - Sturla Brandth Grøvlen - Cinematographer Team Deakins enjoys a great conversation with cinematographer Sturla Brandth Grøvlen (ANOTHER ROUND, VICTORIA, HEARTSTONE, RAMS). In this episode, we learn that Sturla attended school until he was 31, but over the course of the interview, we find out it was well worth it! Sturla talks about shooting Songs for Alexis, his first documentary film, and explains what Scandinavian Folk high schools are. He tells us that he didn't show his work to the outside world until his final year at the National Film School of Denmark, which dared him to fail and allowed him to focus on developing his artistic sensibility. Together we discuss Victoria and how they decided to shoot it in real-time without cuts, working with harsh weather conditions while filming Rams, and Sturla's visual inspiration for Heartstone. Sturla also tells about his experience working with Thomas Vinterberg (Episode 101) on his film, Another Round. Tune in!  RECOMMENDED EPISODE VIEWING: Victoria

She and Roger compare times at the National Film School in London and discuss whether writing can actually be taught. Her love of writing comes through strongly and we learn she reads a book a week! She thinks that if a scene doesn't work on screen, it wasn't written correctly. Krysty discusses the core tenants of good screenwriting and goes into detail about the importance of collaboration with the director. She admits to stealing the experiences of people around her and not considering the budget when she writes. We had a lot of laughs and learned a lot about writing in this episode!

Jan Komasa and Face2Face host David Peck talk about his brilliant, engaging, thoughtful new film Corpus Christi, redemption and the power of communities to reconcile and restore, the Polish Bible Belt, shame, guilt and forgiveness and the ability to healing through our relationships with others. Trailer “Komasa directs with an impressive rigor that fits the subject matter, and the incorporation of subtle ecclesiastical embellishments in the score adds to the imposing solemnity. The smoldering center of it all is Bielenia’s remarkable performance.” The Hollywood ReporterSynopsis: Recently released from a youth detention facility, a young man hiding from his past poses as a priest in a small Polish town, where the healing he provides may not be enough to resolve his own test of faith. When the whole world is at odds and all seems lost, what is left? Corpus Christi is the story of 20-year-old Daniel (Bartosz Bielenia, a major talent on the rise), who, after serving a sentence in a youth detention centre for a violent crime, must face his inner demons while searching for redemption.Running from the troubles that haunt him and hiding from his past by posing as a priest in a small Polish town, Daniel is, clandestinely, given the chance for spiritual transformation. Meanwhile, the arrival of this charismatic young preacher provides an opportunity for his divided flock to begin healing after a polarizing tragedy. But not everyone is capable of forgiveness or deliverance, and following the road to salvation can also lead one astray. As his past sins catch up to his already heavy and burdened conscience, Daniel's intentions are murky and the haven of religion may prove to be more than just a spiritual escape. Set in a country with increasingly blurred lines between church and state, Corpus Christi calls dogma and prostrating into question as Daniel's real test of faith ultimately presents itself at a moment when he's not at the altar. With thanks to Dorota lech from TIFFAbout the Director: Jan Komasa is a Polish film director, screenwriter, and producer best known for directing the films Suicide Room and Warsaw 44. Returning to his native Britain in 1968, he became television correspondent for the GDR and spent 22 years reporting from around the world.Because the GDR, particularly at the height of the Cold War, was not officially recognised as an independent state, he and his colleagues were obliged to work anonymously and quasi-clandestinely in order to obtain the footage they needed. We start with John telling us about this early life in Coventry.Don't forget to check out our show notes here.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/coldwarpod)

He won the World Cinematography Award for Documentary at Sundance 2010 for His and Hers, his debut feature documentary as a DOP. The Sundance jurors singled out the cinematography “for its Vermeer like qualities and formal restraint in conveying the power of ordinary emotional lives”. He was also the DOP on the multi-award winning short film Undressing My Mother, which screened at Cannes, was highly commended at Sundance and went on to win the European Academy Award for Best Short Film in 2005.Patrick’s Day, his first dramatic feature as DOP, received its world premiere at SXSW2014. The film went on to win Best Feature at Galway Film Fleadh and Best Film at Woodstock Film Festival where Michael was also awarded the prestigious Haskell Wexler Award for Best Cinematography. In granting the award Wexler, two-time Oscar award-winning DOP (One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf) noted:”This award is based on what I consider true cinematography, not just on the traditional dexterity. He has that. Michael Lavelle’s work on Patrick’s Day shows a profound understanding of the story and his ability to employ DOP skills such as framing, lighting and camera movement is subtle in unselfconscious ways to subliminally involve the viewer…I give this award enthusiastically to an exceptional, talented filmmaker, Michael Lavelle.” – Haskell Wexler A.S.C. In 2015, Michael was nominated for an IFTA for Best Cinematography for his work on the film. From the Dark, his second dramatic feature as DOP and producer, was selected in competition at Fantastic Fest 2014 and Siches 2015.
