Free Speech, Cancel Culture, and the Mental Health Benefits of Speaking Up: Clinical psychologist Dr. Chloe Carmichael, author of “Can I Say That? Why Free Speech Matters and How to Use It Fearlessly,” frames free expression as a mental health and problem-solving issue amid rising polarization, self-censorship, and cancel culture. Carmichael says authentic speech deepens cognition, aids emotional regulation, and strengthens social support, while chronic suppression can lead to repression, denial, anxiety, depression, and resentment. She describes fear and professional risk after publicly opposing child masking during COVID and argues that labeling speech as “violence” distorts reality, though true threats and incitement differ from words. She distinguishes self-censorship from healthy restraint, offers the WAIT test (Want, Appropriate, Inoculate, Trust), and discusses groupthink, innovation, misinformation debates, time-place-manner limits, and examples from corporate and university settings.
Humans aren't rational. We don't evaluate facts objectively; instead, we interpret them through our biases, experiences, and backgrounds. What's more, we're psychologically motivated to reject or distort information that threatens our identity or worldview – even if it's scientifically valid. Add to that our modern media landscape where everyone has a different source of "truth" for world events, our ability to understand what is actually true is weaker than ever. How, then, can we combat misinformation when simply presenting the facts is no longer enough – and may even backfire? In this episode, Nate is joined by John Cook, a researcher who has spent nearly two decades studying science communication and the psychology of misinformation. John shares his journey from creating the education website Skeptical Science in 2007 to his shocking discovery that his well-intentioned debunking efforts might have been counterproductive. He also discusses the "FLICC" framework – a set of five techniques (Fake experts, Logical fallacies, Impossible expectations, Cherry picking, and Conspiracy theories) that cut across all forms of misinformation, from the denial of global heating to vaccine hesitancy, and more. Additionally, John's research reveals a counterintuitive truth: our tribal identities matter more than our political beliefs in determining what science we accept – yet our aversion to being tricked is bipartisan. When it comes to reaching a shared understanding of the world, why does every conversation matter – regardless of whether it ends in agreement? When attacks on science have shifted from denying findings to attacking solutions and scientists themselves, are we fighting yesterday's battle with outdated communication strategies? And while we can't eliminate motivated reasoning (to which we're all susceptible), how can we work around it by teaching people to recognize how they're being misled, rather than just telling them what to believe? About John Cook: John Cook is a Senior Research Fellow at the Melbourne Centre for Behaviour Change at the University of Melbourne. He is also affiliated with the Center for Climate Change Communication as adjunct faculty. In 2007, he founded Skeptical Science, a website which won the 2011 Australian Museum Eureka Prize for the Advancement of Climate Change Knowledge and 2016 Friend of the Planet Award from the National Center for Science Education. John also created the game Cranky Uncle, combining critical thinking, cartoons, and gamification to build resilience against misinformation, and has worked with organizations such as Facebook, NASA, and UNICEF to develop evidence-based responses to misinformation. John co-authored the college textbooks Climate Change: Examining the Facts with Weber State University professor Daniel Bedford. He was also a coauthor of the textbook Climate Change Science: A Modern Synthesis and the book Climate Change Denial: Heads in the Sand. Additionally, in 2013, he published a paper analyzing the scientific consensus on climate change that has been highlighted by President Obama and UK Prime Minister David Cameron. He also developed a Massive Open Online Course in 2015 at the University of Queensland on climate science denial, that has received over 40,000 enrollments. From dirty blowouts to spit-up and stomach bugs, parents quickly learn that unpleasant messes are part of everyday life. Now, new research published in the Scandinavian Journal of Psychology suggests that this constant exposure doesn't just test patience - it actually permanently changes how the brain responds to disgust. The study found that long-term exposure to bodily waste significantly reduces parents' disgust reactions, and that this effect can last well beyond the childcare years. The findings, shed new light on how caregiving reshapes the brain and may have implications for professions where managing disgust is part of the job. Disgust is a basic human emotion that evolved to protect us from disease. The familiar 'yuck' response triggered by spoiled food, dirty environments or bodily fluids helps keep us away from potential sources of illness. It's not just psychological, the body often reacts automatically, with nausea or an urge to move away. What scientists have long debated is whether repeated exposure over months or years can truly dull this reaction. Parenthood offered a natural test case. The researchers studied 99 parents and 50 non-parents, analysing both questionnaire responses and observable behaviour, such as how much participants looked away from unpleasant images. The study included parent-specific scenarios and visuals, including pictures of heavily soiled nappies. As expected, non-parents showed strong avoidance when viewing images of bodily waste. Parents, however, reacted very differently, but only once their children had begun eating solid food. Parents of weaning or weaned children showed little to no avoidance of soiled nappies or even other forms of bodily waste. Their reactions suggested that prolonged, unavoidable exposure had desensitized them to disgust. Notably, this reduced response wasn't limited to child-related messes; it extended to bodily waste more generally. By contrast, parents whose youngest children were still exclusively milk-fed showed disgust responses similar to those of non-parents, even if they had older children. This surprised researchers and suggests that disgust may remain heightened during the earliest months of infancy, when babies are especially vulnerable to infection. The researchers believe this pattern may reflect an evolutionary adaptation. Strong disgust early on could help protect fragile infants from disease, while later desensitization allows parents to provide hands-on care when children are older and more resilient including when they're sick. The study suggests that parenthood can fundamentally reshape how people experience a deeply ingrained emotion. Researchers say these insights could help inform strategies to support healthcare workers, caregivers and others whose jobs require regular contact with unpleasant substances. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for December 5, 2025 is: inoculate ih-NAHK-yuh-layt verb To inoculate a person or animal is to introduce immunologically active material (such as an antibody or antigen) into them especially in order to treat or prevent a disease. Inoculate can also mean "to introduce (something, such as a microorganism) into a suitable situation for growth," and in figurative use, it can mean "to protect as if by inoculation" or "to introduce something into the mind of." // In 1796, the English physician Edward Jenner discovered that inoculating people with cowpox could provide immunity against smallpox. // The cheese is inoculated with a starter culture to promote fermentation. See the entry > Examples: "Truffle farmers ... inoculate oak or hazelnut seedlings with truffle spores, plant the seedlings and wait patiently often a decade or more for the underground relationship to mature. The eventual harvest is a reward for years of cooperation between tree and fungus." — David Shubin, The Weekly Calistogan (Calistoga, California), 30 Oct. 2025 Did you know? If you think you see a connection between inoculate and ocular ("of or relating to the eye"), you have a good eye—both words look back to oculus, the Latin word for "eye." But what does the eye have to do with inoculation? Our answer lies in the original use of inoculate in Middle English: "to insert a bud into a plant for propagation." The Latin oculus was sometimes applied to things that were seen to resemble eyes, and one such thing was the bud of a plant. Inoculate was later applied to other forms of engrafting or implanting, including the introduction of vaccines as a preventative against disease.
We dive into Seneca's Epistle 107, where he promises that by forcing ourselves to "reflect upon all the possible evils," we can actually "shorten all its trouble by endurance." This isn't morbid dwelling; it's mental immunization. Learn from the ultimate practitioners of this method: the Roman Legionaries, who trained for catastrophic failure so they would never panic on the battlefield. Tune in to discover how paying the psychological price in advance frees you from fear and leaves you ready—and unbroken—for anything. ALL ABOUT THIS WEEK'S SERIES Welcome to "The Unbroken Mind: A 7-Day Guide to Ancient Strategies for Modern Trauma" In the modern world, it's easy to feel overwhelmed, not by barbarian invasions, but by endless notifications, political noise, and the constant pressure to be "on." Resilience isn't a talent you're born with, or something you buy in a self-help book. What if the antidote to our modern anxiety was perfected two thousand years ago, written on wax tablets and sent across the Roman Empire? This series is your essential training manual for mental resilience, drawn from the deepest well of ancient wisdom: Stoicism. Over the next seven days, you're going to build a mental foundation that can withstand anything. This is your Unbroken Mind, and it's structured around one of the greatest resilience coaches in history: the Roman philosopher and statesman, Lucius Annaeus Seneca. Every single episode is a workshop to make this ancient philosophy immediately actionable today. This is day 2 of a 7-day meditation series, "The Unbroken Mind: A 7-Day Guide to Ancient Strategies for Modern Trauma," episodes 3423-3429. YOUR WEEKLY CHALLENGE: "The Acceptance Code" Your mission this week: practice Cognitive Separation, isolating facts from your emotional judgments about them. Whenever you feel stress, pause and list only the neutral facts of the situation (Katalepsis), then discard the "externals" you cannot change. This prepares your Inner Citadel to respond strategically, rather than reactively, to uncertainty and daily irritations. THIS WEEK'S MEDITATION JOURNEY Day 1: Inner Citadel Meditation Day 2: Affirmation: "My peace is governed only by my internal response, not by external events." Day 3: Kumbhaka (Retention Breath) Day 4: Dhyana mudra for self-awareness Day 5: Fifth chakra for inner truth Day 6: Courage Flow meditation, combining the week's techniques Day 7: Weekly review meditation and closure SHARE YOUR MEDITATION JOURNEY WITH YOUR FELLOW MEDITATORS Let's connect and inspire each other! Corn silage is such piece in your ration. Much work has been done by corn breeders to create the most ideal plant with high yields, digestible forage AND starch to support lactation. This month we talk with Dr. José Varela and feature a foundational silage project he and his team worked on at the University of Wisconsin to better understand specifically how zein proteins around corn starch particles change overtime when fermented. Corn breeders throughout the Land Grant University system collaborate and work hard to ensure the next line of genetically superior forage will perform on your operation - but genetics can only go so far. Silage inventory management ensures that the perfect alignment of fully fermented feed for your herd. Protests of agency solicitations or contract awards draw protests about two thousand times every year. It's no fun for either side. But there are things the government can do in crafting an acquisition to lower the chances of a protest. On this episode of Become A Calm Mama, we're going beyond the problems with modern motherhood from last week's episode and into the details of parenting on your own terms. There is a lot of pressure to fit into society's expectations, but the way we're told to measure performance in motherhood can actually be harmful to our kids and to us as moms. The goal isn't to “perform” as a mom or to prove to others that you're a “good” mom. This is what leads us to burnout, overwhelm and guilt.Instead, I want to help you prioritize your child's emotional health, focus on building strong relationships with them and create a family and community that aligns with your values. Parenting FearsThere is a lot of fear and worry in parenting. Things like…I don't want my kid to grow up and not like me, not like themselves or not be liked by others.I don't want my kid to not know how to be in the world or how to be successful. My kid isn't going to be okay.To alleviate our fears, we often try to do everything “right”.We think that if we do everything perfectly, our kids won't experience pain or discomfort. They won't have any negative experiences, and you will have done your job as a mom. But that's not how the world works. You cannot prevent pain or discomfort. Your job as a parent is to give your kids the tools to navigate negative emotions and negative circumstances when (not if) they happen. And one of the best ways we can do this is by letting them know they're okay exactly as they are.Parenting On Your TermsRather than parenting from fear, let's parent from a place of leadership. The first step to parenting on your own terms is deciding for yourself what is important to you.I frame my parenting experience in terms of three goals:My kids' emotional health and wellbeingMy relationship with my kidsMy own mental and emotional wellbeingSo when I make parenting decisions or decisions about how we spend our resources (i.e. time, money and energy), I always look at them through these three lenses. There are times that I've had to drop some expectations on fitting in or showing up in a certain way in order to protect my kids' emotional health or my relationship with them or my own mental wellbeing. Sometimes, this looks selfish from the outside. But it also allows me to go back to what matters to our family. The goals I've chosen for myself help me to look at a situation and ask, “Where are my kids right now, and what do they need help and support with?” External v. Internal ValidationThere are all these external ways that society judges our performance as moms. Things like your kids getting good grades, being kind to everyone, dressing well, being athletic, creative or funny. These are things that society and our communities value. The reward is fitting in, being able to obtain resources and favors and connections because we (and our kids) show up in a way that is socially acceptable. And if you don't perform in these ways, there is a cost. The fear of not being accepted or our kids not being accepted brings up major insecurities, and it can feel really scary to choose our goals over these social norms because we may not be accepted. The problem is that when you work really hard at earning that social capital and acceptance, you put a lot of pressure on yourself and on your kids to perform at a certain level. We're afraid of how our kids' emotional health will be affected by not being accepted. But true emotional wellbeing is internal. It comes from deep self love. What your child really needs from you is to feel unconditional acceptance from their parent. Inoculate them from social harm by giving them the belief that
Young people need parents who will have the difficult but thoughtful and gracious conversations with them.

Key Takeaways Choose your wife well. We can do things differently than our parents, not out of spite, but desiring to want what Jesus wants. Bring real faith into your home and around your children. The Holy Spirit and your parenting should allow your children to feel confident in their faith. Key Quotes (Full Transcript of the Conversation Here) 13:05 - "And so that idea of making an organic... rhythm of your life is what I think we modeled through these ministries growing up in that what we aim to bring in our families... we make it every day, all that we did." 20:55 - "There's a ton of parallels between the two (doing something physical and fatherhood.) You know, we could talk all day about these parallels. It does require a degree of toughness, at least a decision to be tough. You know, fathering is not for wimps. It's maybe one of the toughest challenges you'll have to do, but obviously the most worthwhile challenge you will also do." 26:21 - "But what we're saying by inoculation is that it is good to give them one, a taste of the real thing, so real faith in your home. So that can grow, grow food in their heart. So one, give them a taste of the real thing, really practice what you preach... mentor and be that example. And then two... to expose them to things within your house, expose them to ideologies within your house, expose them to contrary thoughts within your house, bring people into your house who are not like you, who don't look like you, who don't think like you, who may not even act like you might not even like them."
