Send us a textEric Richard Stone has been writing songs for five decades and performing for four. It wasn't until 2014, however, when he moved to a home near Nederland and started pursuing music full-time.Stone found himself inspired by the mountain community, its nature, and its people. He feels that the environment has motivated his best work as a songwriter. Now, he's released a new album called Living The Dream, unbound by style, from folk to bluegrass to Americana to rock to pop. Nine songs are original compositions by Stone, with a tenth alternate version of the song “It Might As Well Be Rain,” and three are cover interpretations.Stone will embark on his first European tour in June for the album, but he'll gear up for that tour by playing in the area that has inspired him the most. Legendary value manager Bill Nygren, chief investment officer at Harris Oakmark and co-manager of the Oakmark Fund, says "it's a pretty good time for investors, especially those who want to diversify away from the S&P 500 megacap technology risk," but he notes that investors who stick with the biggest stocks will find performance increasingly volatile and homogenous because the growth of the Magnificent Seven stocks has changed the way "large cap" gets defined, cutting the number of stocks that qualify in half over just a few years. "If you're a large-cap growth manager, you're either buying less growth, more mid-cap or you are accepting the fact that your portfolio isn't going to have much active share." Also on the show, Richard Stone, chief executive officer for The Association of Investment Companies discusses the similarities and differences in the closed-end fund industry between the U.S. and England, noting that activist investors have struggled to gain traction and acceptance in British boardroom battles. Plus Chuck discusses a recent conversation with his wife about financial priorities, and how they had very different outlooks on what they would spend money on in living a life where longevity is not guaranteed.
Richard Stone, Chief Executive Officer for The Association of Investment Companies — the British equivalent to the Active Investment Company Alliance — discusses the similarities and differences in the closed-end fund industry between the two countries, and how activist investors, most notably U.S. based closed-end powerhouse Saba Capital, have struggled to gain traction in boardroom battles.

He first became inspired to play the guitar in 2016 after watching Sturgill Simpson appear on Conan O'Brien's talk show, teaching himself to play and eventually mustering the courage to go to an open mic. After performing at the open mic, he realized that performing live truly inspired him. He started playing at more open mics, then gigs, then more gigs, to the point where he can now be a musician full-time. Eric Richard Stone says he comes from a classically trained musical family. Many members of his extended family were original faculty members of the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia and even started the Bay Chamber Concert Series. Stone himself went to the Quaker school known as Germantown Friends School, where he sang in the choir and took music theory classes. Richard Stone is a nationally recognized speaker and author on the power of storytelling. His knowledge on "story intelligence" has brought value to industries including business, healthcare, and education. Don't get confused though. Story Intelligence is not about improving IQ. It's about seeing the world as a story, opening us up to possibilities, and elevating the quality of our lives. Storytelling isn't just for bedtime. It's a powerful tool that shapes our lives, our businesses, and even our brains. It can also help build connection and empathy. When we hear someone else's story, it's as though we step into their world, creating a deep level of connection and understanding. This is often seen through the stories we tell with our own families. Family stories have a significant impact on children's resilience and self-esteem. Children who know their family's stories are better equipped to face difficulties, as they have reference points to draw inspiration from. Our lives are stories in the making, and they are worth sharing with others. By becoming the author of our own story, we gain authority over our lives and open ourselves to new possibilities. The shared experience of storytelling connects us, inspires us, and shapes our lives. When done well, they make our lives richer and more meaningful. Whether you're a parent, a business owner, or just someone who loves a good story, remember that storytelling isn't just a pastime or a skill. It is a fundamental part of what makes us human. The power of storytelling goes beyond personal growth by connecting us emotionally. The stories we tell can change lives. This week I met with Dr. Richard Stone, Senior Lecturer in Early Modern History at the University of Bristol, to discuss his recent research on Bristol's early involvement in the trade in enslaved people. It has conventionally been thought that Bristol merchants began trading in enslaved Africans from 1698. However new evidence uncovered by Dr Stone gives strong indications that some Bristol merchants were involved in the trade from as early as 1662.

Dr. Richard Stone joins the show to discuss his new book, Save Every Life You Can: A Reflection on Leadership and Saving Lives During the COVID-19 Pandemic.
In this episode, Jeannette talks to Richard Stone who has spent 30+ years working in construction and development. He is also a TEDx speaker and mentor. Richard is passionate about mental health issues and providing support to others who need help with this. Richard talks about his early life and his business journey and what he has learned along the way. He also speaks extensively about taking care of your mental health, overcoming trauma, grief, and other life challenges, while at the same time providing the right sort of support to help others to do the same. KEY TAKEAWAYS Never leave things unsaid and always, always check in with people and make sure they are OK. The first step to effectively monitoring your mental health is regularly checking in with yourself and asking what am I feeling. How am I acting? Human beings are hardwired for connection. Even councillors have a supervisor to check in and make sure they are doing OK mentally. Everyone needs support with their mental health at some stage. There is a world of difference between mental illness and mental health issues. Being true to your values and genuine is the only way to be an effective leader. Treat your workers with respect. The people at the bottom of the pyramid are essential. Without them you are nothing. You won't get innovation unless people feel that it is safe to share. Look at your team dynamics. Understanding how everyone fits together enables you to support your team and pick the right people for the tasks that need to be completed. Business owners need to learn to share the details of their failures as well as their successes. We can learn so much from each other. Running a small business is probably the loneliness place to be. There is no board of peers to support you and it is tough to secure finance. Connect with others for support. Don´t sweat the small stuff. How to stop doing that is explained in the podcast. BEST MOMENTS ‘I am a firm believer in our being where we are meant to be. ´ ‘Look at team dynamics and dynamics in meetings and dynamics when you are pitching all sorts of stuff.' ‘For me, it is all about serving. It can be a lonely world out there, but it doesn´t need to be.' ‘I don´t think we are really ever finished. We can always learn.' This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. It's never too late to be BRAVE and BOLD and unlock your inner BRILLIANCE. Richard Stone has painted portraits of the Royal Family for more than four decades. At the age of 22, he became Britain's youngest royal portrait artist since Sir Thomas Lawrence painted Queen Charlotte in 1790 at the age of 21. Although he has had little formal art training, Richard Stone's success is a direct result of a natural talent and a strong determination to succeed in the career he has pursued since childhood.Born in 1951 the son of a Colchester postman, Richard began cultivating his talent following an accident at the age of four that left him with a fractured skull and permanent deafness in his right ear. The young artist began sketching in a notebook and later painted to communicate with his family and teachers, demonstrating a keen sense of perspective and mixing colours. From the age of eight, he was actively encouraged by his next-door neighbour, Frederick Heron. An amateur Essex painter, Heron taught Richard the basics of art. Then when he was fourteen, Richard went to the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, where he saw a portrait by Sir Gerald Kelly. With the directness that has subsequently characterised his career, he wrote to Sir Gerald, saying how much he had admired the portrait and asking if he could possibly help and advise him. The result was prompt. Sir Gerald could offer him all the reasons against being a portrait painter, but if he would like to call and see him, and bring his work, he was welcome. Richard took along what work he had done, listened to Sir Gerald's reasons, and would not be dissuaded. It was the start of a friendship that was to last until Sir Gerald's death in 1972.Sir Gerald had been an ideal tutor. With his help and advice, Richard set about becoming a portrait painter. The achievements are formidable. Following Sir Gerald's advice, he started knocking on doors in an attempt to find work, and he was successful. One of his earliest subjects was Sir Arthur Bliss, the Master of the Queen's Musick. As well as Sir Adrian Boult, another contact Richard made was at Clarence House, Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother's London residence. When he was put through to the Comptroller of the Household, Lord Adam Gordon, Richard made his mark with a memorable phrase, “Don't ring off, I could be the latter-day Rembrandt”. This singular lack of modesty paid off and Lord Adam listened to his reasons for wanting to paint the Queen Mother. After accepting a commission to produce a likeness of Lady Adam Gordon, Richard was invited to paint the Queen Mother's portrait. The finished work was greeted with tremendous critical acclaim, but many were sceptical that the young artist could sustain a successful career.Defying the critics, Richard saw this as the first step that would lead to the achievement of his childhood ambition. Unveiled at the National Portrait Gallery in 1992, his portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II is his most famous work. Commissioned by the burghers of Colchester, the eight-foot by five-foot canvas hangs today in the town's Moot Hall, and represents three years of work and some seven sittings. The portrait has been hailed as one of the finest painted during Her Majesty's reign and was subsequently chosen by Her Majesty as the Royal Mail airmail stamp. To commemorate HM becoming Britain's Longest Reigning Monarch, Richard was commissioned by The Realms to paint Her Majesty's portrait again in 2015. Upon completion, it was acquired by The Royal Collection and now hangs in St James's Palace, London.Richard continues to paint senior members of the Royal Family, alongside other prestigious commissions. His sitters have included Nelson Mandela, Luciano Pavarotti, Baroness Thatcher, Dame Joan Sutherland and Archbishop Desmond Tutu.Richard is married and has a son and two daughters. He lives in Colchester where he maintains a studio. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
In this episode, David speaks to Richard Stone who is a chartered construction manager, developer, property investor, a sought-after public speaker and podcaster. His passion is supporting young people as they transition into adult life, helping them through youth work, career guidance and in other practical ways. They speak about the projects Richard is working on. Including the training program, he is writing to teach small property developers how to put processes in place to deliver their projects on time, on budget and to code while keeping everyone on site safe. They also discuss honing your communication skills, recruiting the right people, sticking to your values in an ever-changing world, managing people in an empathetic way and much more. Putting in place systems is key to managing any project well and making the profit you expected. There are lots of opportunities in construction. Lots of people start with a trade, and then branch out into other areas. We all learn differently. The more you understand that, the more you get out of your team. Helping people to overcome challenges and do things they did not think they were able to do is highly rewarding for all parties. You need a mentor that is a few steps in front of you as well as one that is miles ahead of you. Success is a series of small steps. It is 100 boxes piled on top of each other. Put time and energy into recruitment and onboarding. Recruiting the wrong people and not training them properly is a recipe for disaster. Successful recruitment and partnerships both rely on shared values. People´s loyalty is to their values, not to your company. It is, therefore, vital that you hire people who have values that align with those of your business. Tailor the way you communicate to the needs of each individual. Empathy is the key to good communication. Society needs to be more open and ready to talk about mental health issues. BEST MOMENTS ‘Just turn up, be on time and work hard.' ‘For a long time, I had imposter syndrome because I´d never gone to uni.' ‘Recruitment is the one thing you must put most of your energy in to get right.'
