Poyss, RN, Ph.D., CNL, APRN-BC, FAMSN works at Drexel University, College of Nursing & Health Professions since1992. She was the Track Director for the MSN Clinical Nurse Leader Track. Particular clinical expertise is gastrointestinal surgery, nutrition support and nutrition screening of adults and elderly. She received her postmaster`s certificate as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner, and certification as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner and Clinical Nurse Leader. She holds certification from ANA as a medical-Surgical nurse Specialist. She is co-founder of the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses, a specialty nursing organization created for medical-surgical nurses. In 2024, Dr. Poyss was inducted into the inaugural group of Fellows, of the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses (FAMSN). Dr. Poyss is currently practicing in a primary medical group managing palliative care for Elderly homebound patients. She has taught in both undergraduate and graduate Nursing programs in three Universities. Dr. Poyss's research interests in the clinical areas include nursing intervention/outcome studies, and nursing treatment/outcome studies. She has participated with the Iowa Nursing Intervention Classification project and authored two nursing interventional labels for the project. Other research interests include program evaluation, and effects of alternate teaching styles with student learning. Acute-on-chronic pain and tolerance are very complex issues. The bedside nurse plays a critical role in pain management, including medication reconciliation and making sure home medications are continued in the hospital. Patient education is imperative. Managing the patient’s expectation is key, but setting realistic goals is a must.MEDSURG Nursing routinely publishes articles on pain management. In this episode, MEDSURG Nursing Editorial Board Member Susan Bohnenkamp cites two such articles recently published in the journal and talks with Dr. Heather Carlisle, a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Arizona College of Nursing. Dr. Carlisle is certified in pain management and palliative care and has published extensively on the topic of opioid safety and patient monitoring in acute care settings. Prior to joining the faculty, she worked as a nurse practitioner on an acute pain service at a level one trauma center, where she consulted on patients with complex pain needs, particularly acute-on-chronic pain. In this episode, we're learning more about The Nightingale Challenge. The World Health Organization is calling the year of 2020 “The Year of the Nurse and the Midwife,” honoring the 200th birthday of Florence Nightingale.  During 2020, Nursing Now is launching the Nightingale Challenge to invest in young nurses and midwives as it is essential for improving health and health care globally.  Nursing Now is a campaign to improve health globally by raising the status and profile of nursing.  The Nightingale Challenge offers young nurses an opportunity to be part of a global movement that will equip and empower the next generation to be advocates in health.  AMSN is excited to be able to provide this opportunity to our younger members to assist them in their career growth and to provide them opportunities to expand their leadership skills. GUESTS Summer Bryant, DNP, RN, CMSRN, is a managing consultant for BRG|Prism Healthcare where she serves as a subject matter expert for medical-surgical nursing processes and patient care delivery. She is currently the President-Elect of the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses. She is a seasoned healthcare leader with more than 19 years of clinical expertise and nursing leadership experience in medical-surgical environments. She has led teams in a variety of areas to transform performance, reduce staff turnover, and deliver high-quality care and patient service. Dr. Bryant is adept at managing projects and leading people while building a cohesive, collaborative environment and developing nurses and other staff members into leaders.  She has completed research studying the effect of the Lean Management System on unfinished nursing care in a medical-surgical setting.  Prior to serving on AMSN’s Board of Directors, she was a member of the Clinical Practice Committee, member of the Exemplary Practice Task Force, and Chair of the AMSN PRISM Award Task Force.  She is a member of several professional nursing organizations, to include the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses, the American Nurses Association, the Kansas Nurses Association, and Sigma Theta Tau International.  Dr. Bryant received three degrees from The University of Kansas, a BSN, as well as a MSN and DNP focused in Organizational Leadership.   Jennifer Kennedy, MS, RN-BC, has been practicing nursing for over 20 years and is Board Certified in three specialties; Certified Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse, Certified Nurse Educator and Nursing Professional Development.  She graduated from Northern Illinois University with her Masters in Nursing Education and currently is an assistant professor at George Williams College of Aurora University.  She has an extensive background in Medical-Surgical Nursing, Pediatrics, Emergency Medicine and Orthopedics. Jennifer is a member of the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nursing national association and currently serves as on their national nursing board as treasurer.   HOST Alissa Brown, BSN, MSN, RN is a clinical nurse educator from the University of Utah Health. She has been working in the health care industry for almost 12 years, and started her nursing career as a med-surg bedside nurse on an Ortho, Trauma, and Surgical Specialty Unit. It was through that experience in the med-surg unit where she discovered a passion for education, and pursued a master’s degree. She is a lifelong learner, and loves to teach.  Born and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah, she's not all work, and definitely enjoys play! She loves to travel, and tries to plan as many vacations each year as she can with family and friends. Alissa loves to read, listen to podcasts, and geek out to documentaries and crime shows on the weekends. She's a total fair-weather fan when it comes to Utes Football, but will cheer in all the right places, or get mad when her husband tells her to during a game. In this episode, MEDSURG Nursing Editorial Board member Dr. Cynthia Ward talks with Dr. Donna Bond about respiratory compromise. Dr. Bond provides information regarding why respiratory compromise is of concern for medsurg nurses; the importance of awareness of respiratory compromise to help reduce adverse events and patient deaths; how medsurg nurses can increase their awareness through recommendations, clinical education, and training; policies that should be put in place to guide nursing practice; and the role of medsurg nurses in treating patients with respiratory compromise. Donna Bond, DNP, RN, CCNS, AE-C, CTTS, is a Clinical Nurse Specialist also at Carilion Clinic in Roanoke, VA; and is an active member in several nursing organizations, including the Virginia Chapter of Clinical Nurse Specialists; the Respiratory Nursing Society Interprofessional Collaborative, and the Respiratory Compromise Institute. Other organizations where she has contributed her time are Sigma Theta Tau, as a founding member of Tau Phi; and the American Association of Critical Care Nurses. She currently serves on the national board of the Respiratory Compromise Institute representing the Clinical Nurse Specialist role as one of two nurses on the board, and represented the Clinical Nurse Specialist role/Respiratory Nursing Society on the national CONCERT workshop to determine priorities for patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. She carries certification as a Critical Care Clinical Nurse Specialist, Certified Asthma Educator, and Certified Tobacco Treatment Specialist. Recently she was inducted into the first class of fellows at the 2019 Annual National Clinical Nurse Specialist conference. Donna has presented at many national conferences as both a speaker and poster presenter. She has also been published for her work with adolescents in tobacco prevention, asthma education, and the Clinical Nurse Specialist role. GUESTS Jill Arzouman, DNP, RN, ACNS, BC, CMSRN is a Clinical Nurse Specialist and the Director of Nursing Professional Practice for Banner University Medical Center Tucson and South Campuses and Clinics. She co-leads the Evidence Based Practice Fellowship for Banner Health’s 28 hospital system. Jill has an academic appointment at the University of Arizona and oversees all DNP capstone projects that are conducted at her facilities. She is a past president of the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses and has been an active member of the organization for over 20 years.  In addition, she serves as a mentor for the FULD Institute for Evidence Based Practice. Lynn Gallagher-Ford PhD, RN, NE-BC, DPFNAP, FAAN is senior director and clinical core director of the Helene Fuld Health Trust National Institute for Evidence-based Practice in Nursing and Healthcare, and clinical associate professor, College of Nursing, all at The Ohio State University. Gallagher-Ford’s clinical background in maternal-child health and nursing administration spans 30 years. She served in a variety of roles ranging from bedside clinician to chief nursing officer, in which she gained extensive experience and expertise in teaching and implementing evidence-based practice in real-world clinical settings. HOST Caroline Ashman, MSN, RN, CMSRN was born and raised in England. She had two dreams in life – to become a nurse and live in the United States. She accomplished the first task in 1985 and then in 1991, immigrated to America. She currently serves as a Division Director for Medical Surgical Education for HCA. She has also been afforded the wonderful opportunity to teach Med Surg Review Courses across the United States and in Europe for AMSN. Collecting air miles and sharing stores along the way, she is thrilled to join the Podcast team and recognize that the specialty of medical surgical nursing is alive and well. Caroline lives with her husband Jimmy, in Tampa, FL and has two grown daughters, Jennifer & Emily.
