Welcome back to Super Crash Bros! This is a podcast series dedicated to kicking open the door to your next favorite Nintendo series! In the third episode, Jon and Amanda hop on the Warp Star to talk about everyone's favorite adorable pink puffball god killer, Kirby! Kirby began life as the creation of one Masahiro Sakurai, who would eventually go on to create the world-renowned Super Smash Bros franchise. But more on that game soon enough… Anyways, both Jon and Amanda R discuss how the simplistic nature of the series has kept people coming back for over 30 years at this point. They also talk about how Kirby is possibly the strongest, most OP character in the Nintendo universe. The dude kills gods like he's collecting Pokemon cards, the mad lad. Also, the topic of Kirby being people's instance of “My First Vore” may or may not be brought up at some point. Though, to be honest, are you really shocked? The duo also mention Kirby's other ventures outside of video games. This includes the Kirby anime, Kirby Right Back at Ya!, which aired on the FoxBox back in the 00s. They discuss how much it absolutely rules and how it might have been the intro for one of them to Kirby's world. Also, shoutout to Meta Knight. Bro absolutely RULES.

In 2022, Jake "Button Masher" Silverman and Charlie Rosen won the Grammy Award for Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Cappella. Their song was a new arrangement, performed by Button Masher and Rosen's 8-Bit Big Bang, of "Meta Knight's Revenge" from Kirby Super Star. In our episode today, Button Masher joins us to reflect on how this update of a classic Kirby song—the only Grammy-winning video game cover ever—came together, his experiences at the Grammys, and the technical brilliance of composer Jun Ishikawa's work. Then for Act 2, we discuss Button Masher's work on Arzette: The Jewel of Faramore, a new game inspired by the classic Zelda CD-i titles, and his plans for exciting new live shows that blend music with ROM hacks. He talks about what it's like to work and prepare for the recently rescheduled revival of "Some Like It Hot". Charlie explains what exactly an orchestrator is, how he works with other departments, and how he uses Spotify and YouTube to get the overall feel of the show. E3 2022 has been completely cancelled - including any digital show - for 2022. There is a difference between a fan convention like a PAX and an industry-only trade show like older E3's - and there's still a place for those in the industry, even if consumers don't directly benefit from it. Other industries - even other entertainment industries - have industry-only trade shows that don't involve the public, but for some reason video games aren't allowed to have the same thing.

We are back to our typical four man roster of Joseph, Max, Eric and Elliot. Joe brings up Nintendo and their unwillingness to let people play the games they want, the way they want to play them, sparking discussions about a number of different things. Eric gives a review for Life is Strange: True Colors which releases on September 10. Max didn't do his homework this week and scrambles to give us the lore of the Kirby character Meta Knight. And because Elliot wanted to feel important we let him talk about Bus Simulator, and how it surprised him. You can listen to the podcast on iTunes, Spotify, or Google Podcasts. You can also find the show on Youtube. Want even more content by these four guys? Try Joseph's Twitch page, or the video game Max developed, Ocean's Heart. His armor and cape make him a bit heavier than Kirby. He is also incredibly fast, both with his ground movement and his attack speed. All of his Special moves are attacks that can also be used for recovery in some way. Combine this with his multiple jumps ,and it makes his edge-guarding very strong—he can meet opponents off-stage while still retaining good recovery options. Aside from his lightweight status, his weaknesses are his aerial movement speed and his overall damage output. This makes him less effective in free-for-all settings but more viable in one-on-one modes. Overall, though, he has multiple tools to approach unpredictably, to KO opponents, and to recover.”   My Smash Corner-Meta Combos and tricks   Jtails-Meta Knight Competitive Tutorial   Dragon SmashTop Ten Meta Knight Plays   Smash Resources How to Git Gud from GameSkinny Smash Boards Beginners Guide Eurogamer's Beginners Guide Event Hubs Character Move List Super Smash Academy on Youtube Checkout RichaadEB's Metal Melee  Connect with me Join N64Josh Discord Help Support The Show Check out my Patreon  Check out OPSeat.com the official chair of the Nintendo Power CastUse Code N64JOSH Get your free audio book from Audible and help support this cast. Smash Bros Cast Episode 6     What the pros want from Smash for the Switch  From NintendoLife article Knockback seems to be a hot topic Thinkamana moderator for the Smashboards forum had this to say, “The oversight is that rage should never have applied to base knockback, as that messes up the consistency of low-% combos; this means that with some characters, the person losing might have fewer viable options,” Dabuz, a long time top ten Smash 4 player had this to say, “It's a great mechanic because it prevents fishing for KOs at specific damage percentages, but it scales largely with the base knockback of a move (that means the amount of knockback a move delivers at zero percent, basically.) This makes multi-hitting moves such as Zero-Suit Samus’ 'up-B' attack extremely powerful because high base knockback ensures one hit leads into all of its 'hits', which causes the opponent to pop out and die at very low percentages, largely due to rage.” Thinkaman’s solution is, “Applying rage to only knockback growth (like all other damage/knockback modifiers in the game) is the number one thing that I'd like to see fixed in Smash for Switch,”   Larry Lurranother top player would like to see the return of DACUS. A technique where you cancel your dash attack and do a sliding up smash. Fine tuning stick controls and upping the speed of rolling onto the stage were mentioned also. Nario, another professional Smash 4 player had this to say about the stages and stage hazards.“I hope we can further develop on that with something like a 'turn off hazards' option for most stages, similar to what PlayStation All-Stars had,” also this,  “Sometimes in competitive play, to have the most fair result, we need to play on extremely conservative stages, (but) that can get stale quickly. This would liven up the stage list by a lot.” Dabuzwould like to see the training mode fleshed more.“There's a lot of stuff missing from the current training mode (frame by frame speed, recording inputs, testing rage, etc.) so I would love to see a more fleshed out training mode. Right now, there's a lot of things that cannot be tested out there.” Multiplayer wasn’t the only area that Nario would like to see more of story mode like brawl had “I'd love to see a kind of story mode or adventure mode, similar to Brawl's Subspace Emissary,”and  “I love seeing characters in a crossover series interact with one another, like Meta Knight, Marth and Ike.” Who do the pros want to see in Smash on Swtich? Zero: I really want Cloud to stay for the next Smash title. I also want Sora to join the roster and for Snake to return. That's my wishlist. Other characters that made the list were Bayonetta Crash Bandicoot Waluigi Ice Climbers Isaac from Goldensun Banjo-Kazooie Tavis Touchdown Characters suggestions from the Discord Poudigne- Rex and Pyra/Mythra Ryno- Dixie and Funky Kong NintenDavid64- Cappy for Mario. Sylux, Trace,or someone else from Metroid. Another FZero character. And Rex of course. Nightcrawlr724- Not that I “want” to see it but I think they will have a ARMS character on the roster. Maybe the 4 champions from BOTW Ganthet-san- Cloud and the same Fire Emblem Characters would be cool. DarkPanda45- Banjo and Kazooie Ctsmitson-Rex/pyra for sure. If they wanted to add more xenoblade representation maybe have Reyn from the first game and Zeke from the second.  Other than xenoblade characters I would really like a monster hunter character, despite MH World not being on the switch. AllexandertheG-Id like to see game n watch back, all rabbid characters from kingdom battle, rex would be cool too Mels-I'll throw in a vote for Travis touchdown to make my man Suda happy Character Spotlight: Mario Mario’s versatile with ranged and up close attacks He can be played as an offensive or defensive character Utilize fireballs to move on opponents that are shielding and go for a grab Mario’s down throw followed by Up Tilt is an excellent combo for players that are at low percent as lon

Episode 5  Smash 4 History Developer: Bandai Namco and Sora Ltd Release Date: 3DS Japan September 13, 2014, US October 3, 2014, and EU October 4, 2014 WiiU US November 21, 2014, EU November 29, 2014, Japan December 6, 2014 Development   During E3 2011, Smash was announced for the WiiU and the 3DS. Development for the game didn’t start until October of that year. At E3 2012 there was no mention of the game which confused and disappointed some fans because of it being announced a year earlier.  Shortly after E3 during a Nintendo Direct, it was announced that Bandai Namco was along with Sora, Sakurai’s company would be developing the game. At E3 2013, Sakurai began posting photos of the game regularly on the miiverse. At first they seemed to be random screenshots with no info, but eventually, that changed and he began including more info. December 5th, 2014, was the last post and you can see all the archived Miiverse posts here. July 2nd, 2012 Sakurai posted a whiteboard drawing to Twitter showing off a number of characters that would all end up in the game. The picture has been removed from Twitter but can be seen here. Zero Suit Samus, Wario, Sandbag, Pit, Pikmin, Pikachu, Mr. Saturn, Mr. Game and Watch, Meta Knight, Marth, Mario, Luigi, Link, Kirby, Fox and Donkey Kong. Initially, Sakurai said there would be a single player story mode, but it was later dropped. Gameplay Changes One of the biggest changes was the speed of the game. Melee is extremely fast-paced and frantic, Brawl was much slower, Smash 4 was faster than Brawl but still slower than Melee. Melee is an extremely combo heavy game and high-level players could easily punish players that left themselves open to it. Smash 4 allows for combos but not to the extent that Melee does. Getting yourself out of combos is much easier in Smash 4, but not as easy as it was in Brawl. Bridging the gap between casual and hardcore is what Smash 4 set out to do, but that does end up making the competitive matches less interesting to watch than Melee. The much improved online did a much better job catering to players. The casual could play with friends and the hardcore could play For Glory matches. Lag can still be an issue but it's much better than Brawl.   Competitive scene Melee’s high-level competitive play is unmatched when watching pros play and the skill gap sets players apart. Most Melee players have stuck with Melee because Smash 4 is still more like Brawl and less like Melee. In spite of that Smash 4 has still made its way into the tournament scene.   Character list for Smash 4 Bayonetta Bowser Bowser Jr. Captain Falcon Charizard Cloud Corrin Dark Pit Diddy Kong Donkey Kong Dr. Mario Duck Hunt Falco Fox Ganondorf Greninja Ike Jigglypuff King Dedede Kirby Link Little Mac Lucario Lucas Lucina Luigi Mario Marth Mega Man Meta Knight Mewtwo Mii Fighters Mr. Game & Watch Ness Olimar Pac-Man Palutena Peach Pikachu Pit ROB Robin Rosalina & Luma Roy Ryu Samus Sheik Shulk Sonic Toon Link Villager Wario Wii Fit Trainer Yoshi Zelda Zero Suit Samus   Reception Smash 4 on 3DS is sitting at an 85/100 on Metacritic. The small screen and lack of single player hurt the score some. Some circle pads were also damaged from gamers pushing on it too hard on them. Smash 4 on 3DS is the 8th best selling game on the console at over 9 million units sold. The WiiU version is a little higher at 92/100 it’s the second highest rated Smash game, Brawl being number one. Smash 4 on the WiiU is the 4th best selling title with almost 5.5 million units sold.   My History with Smash 4 I picked up both games at launch, but the WiiU version didn’t get much play time. I was lucky enough to get the GameCube controller adapter at launch without a preorder but never picked up the Smash Controllers. My boys were really into to shooters when Smash launched so we didn’t play much together. The younger one did have the game on 3DS so we played that periodically. Fast forward to 2018 and I can’t put the game down. This

Episode 4   Smash Bros Brawl History Developer: HAL Laboratories, Sora, Game Arts, Monolith Soft, Paon and Intelligent Systems. Development began in October 2005 Release Date: January 31st 2008 in Japan. March 9th, 2008 in North America. Australia was June 26th and Europe was June 27th 2008. Development   In 2005 at a pre E3 press conference President of Nintendo Satoru Iwata announced that the next Smash game was already in development for the Wii. Masahiro Sakurai had HAL back in 2003 and was surprised to learn of its development, because Iwata had told him he would be in charge of the next instalment following Melee. Iwata invited Sakurai to his hotel room in LA and ask him to direct Brawl. According to Did You KNow Gaming Iwata told Sakurai if he didn’t join the team they would just re-release Melee with online play. Sakurai was on board and Nintendo hired an outside studio who according to Sakurai had played excessive amounts of Melee. Brawl’s official trailer was at E2 May 10, 2006. Sakurai told IGN that motion controls would not be included in the game. What it would include was Wi-Fi connection and online functionality. Nintendo wanted Brawl to be the game to take the Wii online. Sakurai and Hideo Kojima were testing online play and Kojima said Nintendo “could put it out right now and it would sell millions of copies.” Sadly that was not the case and the game would miss it’s original release date on December 3, 2007 in order to fine tune the game. The single player adventure mode, The Subspace Emissary was a step above Melee, but because Sakurai wanted to make the game more accessible to everyone, so the hardcore didn’t stick around and went back to Melee for high level play.   Competitive scene   The competitive scene didn't last long last because of how unbalanced the game was. Meta Knight was the only viable option for most players so that made the game pretty boring to watch. Tripping was also added to slow players down, so you would just randomly fall a be left wide open to take damage. The slower speed and lack of moves from Melee like wavedashing, L-canceling and decent air dodge played a part in killing it in the competitive scene. One of the biggest blows to playing the game competitively was the ability to act durring hitstun making combos more difficult. Project M Project  M was a mod that was created to make Falco play like he did Melee that evolved into the game that Brawl should have been. Project M was received many updates and even added Melee characters to the roster of Brawl. When Smash 4 was announced After six years it was shut down the team that had been working disbanded to avoid legal complications. There’s still local scenes having tournaments with Project M, but for the most part is has died the main competitive scene.     Character list for Brawl   Mario Luigi Peach Bowser Yoshi Donkey Kong Link Zelda/Sheik Ganondorf Samus Kirby Fox Falco Pikachu Jigglypuff Captain Falcon Ness Ice Climbers Marth Mr. Game and Watch Diddy Kong Zero Suit Samus Meta Knight King Dedede Wolf Pokemon Trainer Lucario Lucas Ike Pit Wario Olimar R.O.B. Snake Sonic Reception Brawl became the fastest selling video game in NOA history 1.4 million units in the first week. Super Smash Bros Brawl is the 8th best selling Wii game of all time at 12.14 units sold.  Brawl sits at 93/100 on Metacritic IGN 9.5/10 Eurogamer 9/10 Nintendo Power 9/10 Edge Magazine 9/10     My History with Smash Brawl Brawl is one of those games that holds a special place in my heart. When it released my boys were 7 and 5 years old and we spent many Saturday mornings trying to unlock characters and play through The Subspace Emissary. The casual play was perfect for playing with boys at that time. They loved to team up on me and we had many epic matches. My younger son loved playing as Wolf, the older would go for Ike and I loved Ganondorf.     Smash Practice Last time we worked on defensive moves, now let's incorporate that into our movement.
