What led to Uri Levine's success as an entrepreneur and innovator in the tech industry? Uri attributes his success to several factors, including his passion for making a meaningful impact, his willingness to challenge everything until he gets satisfactory answers, and his low fear of failure in the Israeli startup environment. Uri also cites his early experience with coding on a Sinclair ZX-81 as a pivotal moment, as it taught him to be efficient with limited resources. His experience working in a corporation and starting products within it also taught him the importance of not missing creative ideas. Additionally, Uri believes that addressing a problem that people face every day, such as traffic jams, is critical for success. He also mentions the approach of not disrupting the entire market and finding a solution that was good enough, which helped make Waze successful. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/tbcy/support

Episode highlights: There are no right or wrong decisions, only the decision you make right now Uri is often asked if selling Waze was the right decision, but you can only make decisions based on the information you have. It's more important to make a decision than wait for the perfect decision. Find a problem you care about, but you are a sample of one You should be passionate about the problem you're solving, but don't assume that anyone else cares as much as you do or wants to solve it the way you want to. You have to get out & speak to people who have the problem If you're afraid to fail then, in reality, you already failed When you're building something no one has built before, you never know if it'll work. You need to experiment, fail fast and have multiple shots on goal. The faster you fail, the sooner you can have another shot. Product/Market Fit does exist & it is measurable If you're not creating value, people won't come back. Retention is the most important way to measure P/MF & make sure that the solution to your users' problem is actually valuable. Getting people to value quickly is essential. B2B & B2C product management share the same goals You might have different customers who care about different features, but they all care about something. The metrics might differ, but the ultimate goal is to deliver value & solve a real pain for all these different people. In today's episode, I talk to Uri Levine, co-founder of Waze.   Uri hated getting stuck in traffic, so he helped start a company called Waze to fix his problem. Google bought Waze in 2013 for over $1.1 billion dollars! But that wasn't it for Uri — he invested in Moovit, another real-time transit app, which sold to Intel for another $1 billion dollars!   Check out Uri's book, Fall In Love with the Problem, Not the Solution, to learn how to identify your consumers' biggest problems and disrupt the markets that currently serve them.   P.S. The world has no shortage of problems. Luckily it has people like Uri Levine, creator of Waze and Moovit, serial entrepreneur, and author, who fall in love with problems and solving them. As a testament to his passion for challenges, "Fall in Love with the Problem, Not the Solution" is the title of his new book. This podcast tracks Uri's journey from a kid who thought he'd be an engineer because he wanted to build things to a globally successful CEO. Uri doesn't fear not succeeding, thanks to his Dad, who never stigmatized failure for trying out an idea. Uri's inherent curiosity drove him to evolve from software engineer to product manager to entrepreneur, tackling Israel's traffic congestion. But it hasn't always been smooth sailing. Hear firsthand how they believed Google's AI navigation announcement was the death knell for Waze, but the competition spurred investment in the company a month away from running out of cash. Uri urges aspiring entrepreneurs to not give up because the journey will be hard. He mentioned the many iterations created by Waze trying to solve customers' problems. He encourages entrepreneurs to make decisions with conviction, including the hard ones like firing the wrong fit. When you fail, fail fast; this gives you time to try another approach or strategize something new. He digs into why entrepreneurs should begin by focusing on a problem, calling it the North Star. Without it, you'll take a longer route and possibly get off-course in your decision-making. Keep asking "who has this problem?" Speak with potential customers and hear their version of the problem so you can work towards finding solutions for them. The wisdom from Uri Levine shared throughout the podcast affirms that it takes courage, conviction, and many other essential traits to become a successful startup entrepreneur or CEO. Tune in to hear his approach first hand.

Uri Levine - Co-Founder of Waze and Author of Fall in Love with the Problem, Not the Solution: A Handbook for Entrepreneurs           If you are afraid to fail, in reality, you have already failed. Uri Levine is a passionate entrepreneur and disruptor, a two-time ‘unicorn' builder (Duocorn). He is co-founder of Waze, the world's largest community-based driving traffic and navigation app, which was acquired by Google for $1.1 billion in 2013, and former investor and board member in Moovit, ‘Waze of public transportation', which was acquired by Intel for $1 Billion in 2020. Levine has built more than a dozen startups and has seen everything ranging from failure, midlevel success, to immense success. Unicorns—companies that reach a valuation of more than $1 billion—are rare. Uri Levine has built two. Levine is co-founder of Waze, —the world's leading commuting and navigation app with more than 700 million users to date which Google acquired in 2013 for $1.15 billion—and his second unicorn, Moovit. Dubbed “the Waze of public transportation,” Moovit was sold for $1 billion to Intel in 2020. In his new book, Fall in Love with the Problem, Not the Solution: A Handbook for Entrepreneurs, with a foreword by Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple, Levine reveals the formula and key components of building a successful start-up that drove those companies to compete with industry veterans and giants alike. Significant tech companies in the world today—Tesla, Waze, WhatsApp, Facebook, Uber, Netflix—were start-ups not that long ago, but Levine believes the next generation of entrepreneurs will make an even bigger impact. As a mentor and teacher, Levine intends to help entrepreneurs disrupt inefficient markets and improve under-functioning services, to focus on solving society-wide problems while saving consumers time and money. Barrett Young - Senior VP Fleet Safety Strategy at Netradyne     Our automobile driving artificial intelligence has almost 37,000 years' worth of training. Barrett Young is a strategic and innovative leader with half a decade in fleet safety and fleet management technology and over a decade of integrated marketing experience for both B2B SaaS and B2C companies. He has developed and led strategic go-to-market initiatives of advanced safety technology and the roll-out of the ELD mandate. He is passionate about GTM analysis and has a fury for big thinking and innovation that scale companies and revenue. With roads increasingly more crowded with delivery drivers and commercial vehicles, driver safety is top of mind for everyone. Between road risks and driver safety concerns, small and medium businesses (SMBs) with fleets face unique challenges in today's climate. In fact, a recent survey revealed that two-thirds (66%) of decision makers at SMBs with fewer than 1,000 employees and five or more vehicles in their commercial fleets are making financial decisions based on immediate needs instead of safety. Smart tech and A.I. driving solutions may make staying on top of driver safety and saving money easier for these owners. With businesses making safety a priority for their fleet of drivers, this keeps all drivers safe on the road.
