One way to cover war is to follow the road offered by the dominant army. In Afghanistan, that often meant journalists were embedded with U.S. or NATO troops, and saw the war and the world around it through their eyes. Guest Bette Dam is a Dutch journalist who covered the war in Afghanistan for 15 years. She began her coverage in 2006, embedded with the Dutch troops fighting there. She's the author of two books: Looking for the Enemy, Mullah Omar and the Unknown Taliban, and A Man in a Motorcycle, How Hamid Karzai Came to Power. Dam also teaches a class called "Unlearning Afghanistan" at Sciences Po in Paris, and is working on a PhD at the Vrije Universiteit in Brussels on the role of media in conflict. In the course of her reporting Dam realized that most Western journalists were providing a distorted view of the war. It left out the perspective of the Afghan people, and made the country appear more dangerous than it really was. And Dam says the press missed opportunities to hold the U.S. and NATO to account for major blunders – including overlooking the fact that the Taliban surrendered in December 2001. More than 2,000 have died and over 9,000 have been injured in an earthquake that hit western Afghanistan on Saturday, October 7. Dam is partnering with Sense of Humanity and Learn Afghanistan to raise funds for medical aid, food and shelter. Eric, Rob and Rudy join for the second part of the Afghanistan podcast, which covers the start of the Afghan civil war, the birth of the Taliban and their takeover of the country, 9/11 and the US Invasion, the period of the occupation government and the Taliban resurgence and return. We discuss the origins of the Taliban, and what has made them popular throughout the decades, what the US occupation government meant to the Afghan people, the differences between the first and second Emirates, the enigmatic figure of Mullah Omar, as well as the Taliban-Bin Laden relationships. We conclude with thoughts on what can we learn from this whole period, including thoughts on the topics of stageism and ethnicity.

A new book by a Dutch journalist claims Taliban leader Mullah Omar remained in hiding near a US base in Zabul, Afghanistan, until his death in 2013. The release of the book, and an accompanying English-language report contradict earlier evidence that Mullah Omar was in Pakistan. Anand Arni and Nitin Pai tell Aditya Ramanathan why they're sceptical of the new claims.

They Knew They Were Right. Labeling the "Taliban Wing" of the Progressive Movement. Does today's Intolerant Left share certain intellectual affinities with the Taliban of Afghanistan? We consider parallels through the lens of Mullah Omar's 2001 destruction of the ancient "Buddhas of Bamiyan" statues in the Hindu Kush. As the "book burning" Left wages its assault on Free Speech in America, we consider their pretzel-like justifications -- and note an alarming lack of sophistication. How do some Leftists execute the psychological journey from self-supposed purveyors of "tolerance" and "diversity" unto the actual outlawing of oppositional viewpoints? We listen to what Ann Coulter "would have" said had she not been banned from Berkeley, and find it altogether anodyne. Meanwhile, a new Morning Consult poll finds that President Trump is "more trusted" than the national political media. Plus, we offer vignettes on North Korea, the White House Correspondents' Dinner and last night's Kingston Trio concert in Denver. GRP 73- Back on for this week's podcast are two Green Berets one who is a first generation Special Forces solider, Mike Stahl who served two tours of duty in Vietnam with his first tour on an A-Team, and second tour running recon with CCN (Command and Control North) as a MACV-SOG (Military Assistance Command Vietnam-Studies and Observations Group) One Zero, or Team Leader. Our second guest is Bryan Meyers, A Special Forces Intelligence Sergeant with 8 combat tours in both Afghanistan and Iraq. Bryan and a fellow Green Beret named Loren Schofield have started a campaign called "Raise the Black" in creating products to sell with the returns going out to help the families and warriors of the ISOF (Iraqi Special Operations Forces) who elements of the Army Special Forces trained and stood up during the beginning of the Iraq war. ISOF has gone on hundreds of combat operations with American Special Forces Teams during the worst of the fighting in Iraq against Al-Qaeda, and the Shia militias of Sadr City. ISOF has single handily stopped ISIS from advancing on Baghdad. They have been fighting non stop for over 10 years. We discussed the similarities of the Army Special Forces first generations and todays warriors. We talked unconventional warfare and what it takes to defeat these radical groups. Below is an excerpt: John: I mentioned earlier the book "Hammer Head Six" written by Forces Captain Ronald Fry. They laid out step by step how to defeat the insurgency in Afghanistan. Its proven. The battle space owners are usually Officers from the infantry. A full bird colonel or a 1-star general is not going to listen to a Special Forces Captain even though he's an induvial who has trained for years and mastered this type of warfare. It seems like the people who know this type of warfare are not allowed to lead the way. Bryan Myers: Just propaganda alone America has not set out to win a war since WW2. We are not fighting to win. You can see it from propaganda that is allowed from the DOD, and Military at the time. "Can you not fight in the war? save your grease. We can use it to kill Nazi's." Let me do what I need to do and I will give you the insight. We had literal transmissions on radio from Mullah Omar from 3rd Special Forces Group of us killing so many during Operation Medusa these commanders in Pakistan wouldn't even answer the phones. Segment #1: Israel Hit Southern Lebanon, Despite Agreement to Suspend Air AttacksIsrael struck from the air again today in Southern Lebanon, despite yesterday's promise of a 48-hour suspension. Prime Minister Olmert says there will be no cease-fire and that operations will be expanded. Israel has apologized for yesterday's strike in Qana, where 56 civilians were killed when a bombed house collapsed into the basement. Meantime, two Hezbollah rockets hit near Kiryat Shmona in northern Israel. After canceling her trip to Beirut, Secretary of State Rice is returning to Washington, where President Bush has again called for a multi-nation force to support the Lebanese government in Hezbollah strongholds. We get updates from Jerusalem, Beirut, Washington and the United Nations. Segment #2: NATO Peacekeepers Take Over in Southern AfghanistanIn Afghanistan today, NATO took on its biggest assignment since its founding to oppose the Soviet Union in 1949.
