In this episode, Therese Markow and Dr. Charles Easley IV discuss the significance of a father's lifestyle before conception and its effects on prenatal development. This comes about not by mutations in the sperm DNA, but through heritable changes in the way the father's genes are turned on and off during the development of the fetus. THese changes are referred to as epigenetic. So it's not just about the mom, They thus explore the paternal origins of health and disease, highlight animal studies and human cohort studies that demonstrate intergenerational transmission of epigenetic changes, and discuss the dangers of toxic chemical exposure on male sperm. Key Takeaways: To study the paternal effects on the fetus, we are able to do animal studies in the lab, however, for human studies, we can only study in cohorts after the fact, such as with the Dutch Famine, Michigan PBB, or, lately, the effects of COVID-19. Gary Miller is one of the leaders studying how paternal exposure prior to conception can have profound effects on the lifespan and healthy aging of future offspring. While we cannot pinpoint all the chemicals as having a lasting effect yet, it is important to try to be as healthy as you can. Certain chemicals, such as BPA and certain pesticides, have been studied to have an effect. And not just the mother during pregnancy. "We've got a lot more evidence to suggest that what the father does prior to conception can have a profound effect on the genes that are expressed during development, and can have profound effects on how these organs develop in the offspring." — Dr. Charles Easley IV Episode References: The Dutch Famine Birth Cohort: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7934722/ The Michigan PBB Cohort: https://stacks.cdc.gov/view/cdc/3929/cdc_3929_DS1.pdf The Poisoning of Michigan by Joyce Egginton: https://www.amazon.com/Poisoning-Michigan-Joyce-Egginton/dp/0870138677 Connect with Dr. Charles Easley IV: Professional Bio: https://publichealth.uga.edu/faculty-member/charles-a-easley/ Website: https://www.easleylab.com/ Email: cae25@uga.edu Connect with Therese: Website: www.criticallyspeaking.net Threads: @critically_speaking Email: theresemarkow@criticallyspeaking.net Audio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. Just how easy is it to get 1000hp out of an Audi 4-litre? With reflashing's capabilities growing every year, will standalone ECUs ever become obsolete? And what makes someone drop their profession as a doctor to tune cars full time? All these questions and many more are answered in this week's episode of the High Peformance Academy Tuned In podcast with John Banks and Mitch McKee, the brains behind Dyno Spectrum.Use ‘PODCAST75' for $75 off your first HPA course here: https://hpcdmy.co/hpa-tuned-inDyno Spectrum is best known for its popular DS1 package for various Audi and Lamborghini platforms. It allows for easy wireless real-time reflashing of factory ECUs and includes provisions for Flexfuel, high-speed datalogging, as well as a long list of off-the-shelf maps to work with whatever level of modification a car has. Both John and Mitch have been in the game for years and bring a wealth of knowledge to this conversation. While they first met when working for Cobb reverse engineering factory ECUs, both had quite different and interesting career paths to get where they are today — especially John who, up until a few years ago, was a practising doctor who worked with automotive electronics and tuned cars after hours for fun.The conversation jumps into factory ECUs, digging deep into how they work, and why they do the things they do that at first inspection don't make a whole lot of sense. Reflashing, as you'd expect, is also covered in fascinating detail. The big question that seems to be getting harder and harder to answer is also discussed: reflash vs standalone — when do we need to ditch the factory ECU and go MoTeC, Haltech, Link, or anything else? Do we even need to at all? Follow Dyno Spectrum here:IG: @dynospectrumFB: Dyno SpectrumWWW: dynospectrum.comWant to learn how to tune EFI? Start here instantly, and for free: https://hpcdmy.co/tuneb
Hey There Listeners! This week's episode piggy backs off of last week's, where we talked about WHEN your child should be reading. This week, we are going to talk about WHAT your child should be reading. So many parents come to us and ask for great book recommendations. The market for children's books is incredibly saturated. How do you know what will be a stay-up-all-night-until-I-finish-it book versus a gather-dust-on-the-shelf book? We have read thousands of children's books, in the classroom, at home with our children, and in our Enriched offices with our students. We know what gets a little person's engine going and have culled together a list of best reads for ages 5-10…just in time for the holidays! Consider this our gift: You can give just the right book - the gift that keeps on giving - and put it into the hands of your little ones with just a few short clicks below. That's right, not only do we tell you about each read we recommend in the pod, but we've linked access to the books mentioned in this episode in our show notes. Yes, we love you that much. And just for kicks and giggles, I'll show you the difference between several types of diodes, and the difference when running it as a soft clipping overdrive to a hard clipping distortion. Sounds like fun, eh? Oh, and I realize the title is a little click-baity. But it's all in fun, am I right?
Chasing Tone - Guitar Podcast About Gear, Effects, Amps and Tone
Blake picked up a Univox EC80 Tape Delay. He and Brian take a look at it. Tuners. A necessary evil on any board. They also bring out strong opinions as to which one is best to use. Let’s get ready to rummmmble! If you want to get good at guitar you have got to practice. But is there a point where you don’t need to? Or does practice change as you get better? The guys talk about it. Brent Mason is giving Skype lessons, what is wrong with Behringer products, and you must like what Blake likes or you are wrong. All in this week’s Chasing Tone. Samson here, I thought I would share this, from our #1 fan in the Canadias; in response to our latest episodes ("Indie" Game Devs - 83 & Dex +4). Dex +5 will be dedicated to this email: "Thanks for a great podcast, again. After listening to your latest antics, including mics breaking shot glasses I realized how old and tired I am. Let me explain. My gaming started around late 80 and became a serious threat to my education when I played Warlords and Eye of the Beholder on Amiga. I quickly realized it will be hard to come back to Talisman and other board games as back in the day I lived in Poland and it was easier to find an illegal copy of a PC game than to find an illegal copy of a board game. I went to university in '92 and then year later migrated to Canada to continue my university education there. Little did I know, Doom was about to land in my life and replace school as my main interest. The attack on school continued with multi user dungeon text based games such as M.U.M.E. Then I played Meridian 59 and finally Ultima Online. Now the sad part. Everything I have played since MUME and Ultima Online has gradually descended into the shit we are being presented with now, also called games. Long and hard has been the road to recovery on my part. As much as I enjoyed the worlds of Dark Age of Camelot, Star Wars Galaxies, Eve Online, Lord of the Rings Online, and countless others my dislike for the marriage of whole gaming development and publishing business began to grow. I started to notice the deficiencies, early on that could be blamed on emerging companies' inexperience, but soon it became clear it was more than that. It was simply greed. Someone realized games can be profitable. Games don't need to be developed by shy nerds who need to realize themselves in the eyes of their peers. With that, a thought came that good times are nothing but a fleeting moment and for more pleasure one needs to dig deeper into his pocket. I applaud your energy on the subject of the descent of gaming into the shit hole it is now. I agree wholeheartedly with you and Mr. Madrigal on the reasons why it is so. The unwashed and uneducated masses can have no clue as to the quality of the old games. How would they if they never played such gems as Ghost Recon in 2001 or Rainbow Six and Rogue Spear in late '90s? What would they think of COD and other shooters if they played the original PlanetSide? I used to get mad and preach on the subject of this descent. I used to debate with younger players the finer points of gaming, the intensity and the rush of adrenaline in full loot games, but since the huge success of World of Warcraft I realized that there are more care bears in the world than players like me. It's the norm to have quest markers, neatly outlined areas and cross-hairs on quest targets. Reading is not required, people don't take chances and generally don't like to dig for answers. It's just easier in the world of micro-transactions. It's faster and cleaner. I gave up the fight, I'm no Don Quixote, but I want to pass along the passion for gaming to younger generations and I applaud you and your podcast for doing the same. "Prem" a.k.a. many other names. P.S. tell Sal that the first first-person MMORPG wasn't EverQuest, but Meridian 59." Responses - Devin Steele - "That's why I love Dark Souls and Bloodborne so much. It's guilty of some debauchery (aka DS1's true final boss being in a dlc) but overall its a refreshing departure from the AAA game bullshit." Jack Acebedo - "That's why I love Overwatch. No DLC at all, and the things you have to pay for are not necessary at all. It's a really smart business model because it insures that people will keep interest in the game and it's a blast to play if you're playing alone or with some buddies"

Brian and Blake take a look at that and maybe the bigger question, do we really need radio? Today’s guest is Chris Mosher, a friend from Twitter and podcast buddy. Chris is a BIG Dark Souls fan, and we get into just about everything you’d want out of your typical DGUS episode (except for The Old Hunters, which he hasn’t played, so I kicked him off the cast). Chris is a blast to talk to, and his enthusiasm for the Souls games is infectious. I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that he inspires a few people to go back to DS1 after this comes out. Brian and Blake are back and talking about some of the "inexpensive" pedals they own that impress them. You may be surprised at some of the cheap stomp boxes the guys talk about. Having space for your gear can be a precious commodity. Brian is running out of it. He and Blake talk about some of the remedies they have found for this dilemma. Ever notice some of the older pedal circuits are not as "clean" in bypass mode? Brian explains how technology advances have improved this issue.

In this podcast I'm discussing wah pedal placement. I'll show you some sound examples and you make the decision for yourself. Me personally? I like it before distortion. I'm using a Vox Wah and a Boss DS-1 distortion. Why the DS-1 and not a Wampler? Because I don't want these podcasts to be a commercial for Wampler stuff. My goal is to bring YOU value, and provide content that helps you regardless of whether you buy our pedals or not. Enjoy the podcast, and leave a comment below if you'd like. Also - if you do enjoy the podcast or find value in it, will you share the link?
Chasing Tone - Guitar Podcast About Gear, Effects, Amps and Tone
Over the next few podcasts I'll be doing a series on "pedal placement", where I address where to place certain guitar pedals within a chain of pedals. I'll demonstrate putting them in various places and offer my opinion. In this podcast, I'm discussing phaser, distortion, and their relationship with each other in an intimate setting. Ok, not really that kind of intimacy. But still, this is important stuff! I'm letting you hear the sound when you run the phaser before vs. after distortion. Enjoy!
Episode 06 is here, and this week we're sitting down with the IllusoryWall. Those of you who get into the nuts and bolts of Souls mechanics already recognize the name, I'm sure.
