Then I switched to nonfiction and almost stopped reading anything fictional. Because here since 2014, from the beginning of Russian invasion, we have been so many tragedies, so much pain and despair that there was no point in sympathizing with book characters. How can one take fiction seriously? When thousands of real life King Lears are abandoned on the streets, scores of Odysseuses are left far away from where homes and countless Ophelias are driven mad by despair.  I stopped reading fiction a long time ago, but some of those books still live in my memory. For example, I vividly remember Kurt Vonnegut's book, 'Slaughterer House Five' or 'The Children's Crusade'. Vonnegut a US Army soldier during Second World War was captured by the Germans and sent to Dresden where he survived with the allied bombing of the city. He escaped death by hiding in one of a deep underground meat lockers an experience that inspired him to write the book about his war experiences. Hence the first part of the book title- Slaughterer House five.  The second part about the Children's Crusade is a quote from  Vonnegut's wife. She described her husband and his comrades' participation in the war emphasizing where youthfulness when they went to the front. Most of them barely reached adulthood with they were in fact, children sent into real bloody war against the monstrous evil. In our army too, there are very young girls and boys, but they are minority compared to the older soldiers. Men under 27 years old are not conscripted for war, those younger when that age come to the Army only as volunteers. However, even among the volunteers, the majority are people over thirty or even forty. At 43. I am one of the youngest in my unit, we have people aged 50 and even 55, and all of us volunteered.  We have been at war for over 700 days and no one knows how much longer it will last. In our free time conversations about what each person will do after the victory used to be common. However, these discussions now contain fewer concrete plans and more abstract dreams. People no longer talk about finding specific jobs or taking certain positions. They just express a desire to live, to see victory, and finally rest.  In ordinary life, I did not feel my age. There was no occasion to. But in the Army you immediately realize that you are not 20 anymore. Your back, legs and neck constantly remind you that they are not very happy with the burden of body armor, helmet, and heavy backpack. You can't run as fast as the young ones, you can't jump as high, and you have to stop more often for a break. But you still do your job. Hundreds of thousands of adults and even almost old people do everything for the sake of victory, despite bad knees, joint pain, high blood pressure, and other unpleasant things that come with age. It's a crusade, not of children, but of their parents and grandparents. And I think that's how it should be. We must protect the younger generation, ensure their safe future. They should not die under shell and freeze in trenches or yearn far from home and familiar things. All of this is our responsibility now.

Is loving someone with an addiction, leaving you feeling broken, exhausted, and repeatedly disappointed?  When you love someone who drinks too much or suffers from an addiction, it hurts. Life is not ‘normal.' You may feel alone, but you are not unique in your pain or dilemma. Nor are you isolated in this situation. Saving You Is Killing Me is a helpful guide to light a darkened path. You must understand that nobody deserves to suffer - you have the right to live a peaceful and fulfilled life that is full of love! You can, and you will find happiness again! Your journey starts by taking back your power and shifting the focus back onto you! With compassion and grace, a positive psychology practitioner and the author of Saving You Is Killing Me: Loving Someone With An Addiction, Andrea Seydel offers support by sharing her personal experiences and the knowledge she used to help navigate the wreckage of her struggle. I’ve had a lot of special guests that I consider to be personal heroes on this show before, and today’s is no exception. Yoni Wolf, frontman for the excellent band Why?, as well as the host of The Wandering Wolf podcast was kind enough to talk with me for a half hour before sound check. He is currently back on the road for the Alopecia 10th anniversary tour, playing that amazing record in its entirety. It remains a personal favorite of mine along with so many songs particularly “The Blackest Purse, Gemini (Birthday Song), Rubber Traits, Yo Yo Bye Bye,” and many more. I try to relay my enthusiasm as usual, but also get some insights to the man behind the curtain.

Yoni’s songs have meant a lot to me over the years and hopefully this conversation will inspire you to check out his work, support the band while on tour, as well as learn more about how a touring songwriter manages to thrive and survive. Topics include social media cancer, maintaining one’s health, work/life balance and a whole lot more. Again, I can’t say enough good things about the majority of the Why? discography, in addition to the other two bands that are supporting the tour: The Ophelias and Lala Lala. Check them all out, buy their records and maybe go see a show. Huge thanks to publicist Brent and of course, Yoni himself for taking some time to talk in the backstage green room. Songs featured:
“Fatalist Palmistry”
“Song Of The Sad Assassin”
 “The Blackest Purse” (briefly)
“Gemini (birthday song)”

Keith Dion has had an astounding career as a musician, songwriter, producer, and filmmaker.   But the story of what made this musician great goes much deeper.  What made this musician great is an incredible story of tenacity.   Severely abused and then abandoned by his parents, he determined he would succeed.  He was inspired to become a musician by Jimi Hendrix. Many years later he hooked up with Jimi Hendrix's bass player, Noel Redding.   Most well-known as being the producer, manager and bandleader for the late Noel Redding of The Jimi Hendrix Experience, he also has produced records for Arthur Lee and Love, and has played in New Zealand’s classic cult band The Ponsonby DC’s, as well as San Francisco alternative groups The Ophelias, 3:05 AM, and Corsica, producing records for all of them along the way.   Over the years he also recorded or performed with members of The Kinks, Thin Lizzy, Santana, The Counting Crows, Weather Report, Herbie Hancock’s Headhunters, and The Mahavishnu Orchestra. Most recently he’s released the very critically acclaimed collaboration with Jefferson Starship members Diana Mangano and Prairie Prince - Reno Nevada and Other Songs of Gambling, Vice and Betrayal as The Great American Robber Barons.   After both of his parents died in Reno, Nevada, the San Francisco-based artist discovered a whole new dimension to his musicality. “Their deaths made me face a lot of stuff, and I keep peeling back the layers and finding these dark aspects inside of me,” Keith says. “Every song on the album is about gambling, vice and betrayal, and we really mean it.”     In this interview he shares his experiences of 30 years, playing with famous people and his record deals.  But, it took the death of his parents for him to start writing lyrics.   In Snapshots of Heaven and Hell, he shares how he survived filicide and extreme childhood abuse at the hands of his Vietnam Era PTSD damaged father.
