Seeing a local craft brewery shut its doors is always tough, but this hurts extra hard. In this episode, Joe and Caroline pay tribute to Taft's Brewing Company. Taft's Brewing Company opened its doors on Opening Day in 2015 in a beautifully renovated church in Over-the-Rhine. They were named after the 27th President of the United States, William Howard Taft, originally from Ohio. President Taft was a heavy-set man. According to urban legend, he got stuck in a bathtub at the White House. Taft's Brewing made this urban legend part of their brand. Over the years, we witnessed their growth. They started to can and distribute their beer and opened two additional locations, one in Spring Grove in the Cincinnati suburbs and one in Columbus.Taft's beer and taproom spaces significantly impacted our "craft beer" journey. Caroline met friends there to knit, and Joe went there as part of his joint bachelor party. It used to be our go-to spot for dinner if we went to Over-the-Rhine with friends on the weekend. When they opened their Brewporium on Spring Grove Ave, we took our kids there to watch the trains while eating pizza, typically after we visited the Cincinnati Zoo.Due to COVID, hard economic times hit everyone. Unfortunately, they were forced to close their original location in Over-the-Rhine on November 25, 2023. About a year later, they announced the closure of their Columbus location. Their third and final taproom, their "Brewporium" on Spring Grove Avenue, will permanently close on December 29, 2024. However, this isn't the end of the road for the beer. Their beer will live on through CinBev, which purchased the brand earlier this year. Taft's beer will join other classic Cincinnati brands such as Christian Moerlein, Hudepohl, and Little Kings as part of CinBev. Times are challenging right now, especially for the "little guy." Please get out there and support our local businesses!About the Craft Parenting PodcastThe Craft Parenting Podcast is hosted by Joe and Caroline, two Cincinnati parents who are also craft beer enthusiasts. We hear a lot about students who are not engaged in school.  But what happens when schools begin to do things differently to give students more control over their education — in everything from hiring staff to student discipline policies?  MPR News host Angela Davis shares a conversation she moderated this spring with high school students, principals and teachers from three public schools who are finding new ways to support student leaders. A technical high school on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota is helping students explore careers and Indigenous identity. A small public charter high school in Brooklyn Park involves students resolving discipline issues.  And, at a small-town school in southeastern Minnesota high school students help out in the elementary school classrooms.  The panel discussion was held May 7 in Minneapolis at an annual education reform gathering called “Student-Centered Learning for Equity” convened by the Minneapolis-based nonprofit organization Education Evolving and supported by the Bush Foundation.  Guests:   Cari-Ana Garcia Luna is the director and superintendent of SAGE Academy, a public charter high school in Brooklyn Park.  Skye Leng is a ninth grader at SAGE Academy.   Marlin Kingi is a social studies teacher and student council advisor at Lakota Tech High School, a public high school in Oglala Lakota County on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota.  Marcel Swallow is a sophomore at Lakota Tech High School.  Luke Kjelland is principal of Spring Grove Public Schools, a public kindergarten through 12th grade school in Spring Grove in southeast Minnesota.  Ellie Halverson is a senior at Spring Grove Public Schools.

One of the buildings at the American TFP's headquarters in Spring Grove, Pennsylvania has a glass covered niche immediately across the entrance hall from the main door. It encloses a statue of the Mother of God, under the title of Our Lady of Good Success. Among the members and supporters who enter the building each day, the custom is to stop and bow before this image whenever one enters or leaves the building – or even when walking from one end of the building to the other. The founder of the international TFP movement, the Brazilian scholar, Plinio Corrêa de Oliveira, had a fervent love of the Virgin Mary, and of Our Lady of Good Success, in particular. This essay is typical of the instruction that he gave to TFP members and supporters about the importance of devotion to the Blessed Mother. So, we begin this podcast about Our Lady of Good Success by bringing our listeners Professor Plinio's essay, “Why We Need Our Lady.” Those who wish to read this essay may use this link - https://www.tfp.org/why-we-need-our-lady/ Then we continue with an excerpt from one of our favorite books, A Spanish Mystic in Quito. Minneapolis actor Nissa Nordland was drawn to the play “Wish You Were Here” because of the premise: It's a one-act improvised comedy about grief. A group shares memories about a friend who has died some time before. The show, which tends to vary each night, considers how their relationships have changed since the loss. “I love that it's the idea of bringing joy to a situation that we often are looking at with a sad lens,” said Nordland. “We are celebrating the person… and finding the joy in remembering them, and then figuring out, where do we go now?” The show was created and directed by Mike Fotis, a co-founder of Strike Theater, which is dedicated to building a community of sketch comedy, storytelling and the spoken word. Nordland says the cast features a group of Twin Cities “comedy legends” who are sure to bring a funny and heartfelt show. “Wish You Were Here” runs March 10-11 and 23-25 at 7:30 p.m. at Strike Theater in Minneapolis. Actor Meghan Kreidler of Minneapolis is a big fan of JuCoby Johnson's plays, which she says explore heavy, thought-provoking topics through the lens of love. She's looking forward to seeing his new play, “5,” at the Jungle Theater, co-produced with the Trademark Theater. Johnson acts in the play he authored, about two close friends who own a convenience store. When a real estate developer offers to buy the store located in a rapidly changing neighborhood, the two friends face decisions that will test their friendship. Kreidler says it's a show about family legacy, gentrification, and what happens to friendship as environments evolve. “I think the thing that excites me also about this piece is where it's being done,” adds Kreidler, “because the Lyndale Lake Street area [where the Jungle Theater is located] has so rapidly changed over the last five to 10 years, and I feel like audience members will be able to engage with the show in a different way based on where they're seeing it.” “5” opens Saturday and runs through April 16. Molly Anthony of Richfield is an artist and teacher who lately has focused on teaching art for self-care, and she loves the meditative process of creative Joleen Emery. The Spring Grove resident creates flowers, wall decorations, and other eye-catching designs out of old books and magazines. It's a process that involves the repeated folding and cutting of paper — and sometimes taking a bandsaw to old books. Anthony watches Emery on Tik Tok as she walks through her creative process. Emery runs yoga and artist retreats at Big Raven Farm in southeastern Minnesota, which also operates as a bed and breakfast. You can check out the space during the Bluff Country Art Studio Tour the last weekend in April. Correction (March 9, 2023): An earlier version of this story incorrectly spelled an actor's last name. This has been corrected.

Steve Thatcher says “I am in the process of releasing all of my rocketry designs to the public domain under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International” You can read the licensing in detail at https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/ You can find the designs on http://www.tinkercad.com/ by simply doing a "People" search for "SteveThatcher".   Once you find the profile, click it to view the parts. Steve has also tagged the parts with “SMTDESIGNS”, “AVBAY”, and “ROCKETRY”, but you will get more "hits" that way of other non-related parts. My intent in doing this is to propagate the footprint standard I created for devices and batteries over the last years, so the rocketry community could benefit. Thatcher says “I would also like to see my designs come to a greater use by making them available for no cost to those that have the required equipment.” Steve asks that the footprints for carriers and platforms remain unchanged.  Thatcher says”I recognize the need to change things when necessary, but changing footprints negates the universal benefit they provide.  Take the time to look at my entire library of parts to get a system view of why things were done.” Steve will be available to answer questions through SMT Designs, and the SMT Designs facebook page. _______________________________ Tripoli News During the LDRS 40 Member's Banquet it was announced that that the Tripoli Wisconsin Association, Tripoli Green Bay, and Tripoli Chicago will be hosting LDRS 41 at the Richard Bong Recreation Area located in Kenosha County, Wisconsin. Middle and high school teams could choose to attempt the college/university division challenge or develop their own science or engineering experiment. Teams in the college/university division tackled a new task that mirrors NASA's missions like the Mars Curiosity Rover.  Teams had to design a payload capable of autonomously locating where their rocket landed by identifying the rocket's grid position on an aerial image of the launch site while transmitting the data back to their ground station.  This had to be accomplished without the use of GPS. The requirement simulates a challenge faced by NASA's mission managers – communicating with spacecraft and payloads on distant plan mmmm etary bodies, where use of GPS is not an option.   Sixty teams from 22 states including Puerto Rico took part in this year's competition, with 27 teams launching April 23 near NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. Teams that did not travel were allowed to conduct their final test flights at a home launch field. For the second year in a row, The University of North Carolina at Charlotte won the launch division, while Tarleton State University in Stephenville, Texas, won first place in the design division of NASA's 2022 Student Launch rocketry competition. Dayna is the sixth generation in her family to farm in Houston County, and she and her husband Nick Nguyen are finishing 75 mixed breed heritage pigs on pasture this season. They utilize a wagon wheel hub model and are constantly experimenting to improve soil health, pit happiness and health, and farmer happiness and health.  In her conversation with Jared Luhman, Dayna shares how her production system has evolved over time, her focus on soil health, her intentionality in the incubator farm, and her philosophy on marketing, pricing, and running a farm business. The Spring Grove Experiment is a series of lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) studies performed from 1963 to 1976 on patients with psychotic illnesses at the Spring Grove Clinic in Catonsville, Maryland. These patients were sponsored by a federal agency called the National Institute of Mental Health to be part of the first study conducted on the effects of psychedelic drugs on schizophrenics. Then, the Spring Grove Experiments were adapted to study the effect of LSD and psychotherapy on patients including alcoholics, heroin addicts, neurotics, and terminally-ill cancer patients. The research done was largely conducted by the members of the Research Unit of Spring Grove State Hospital. Significant contributors to the experiments included Walter Pahnke, Albert Kurland, Sanford Unger, Richard Yensen, Stanislav Grof, William Richards, Francesco Di Leo and Oliver Lee McCabe. Later, Spring Grove was rebuilt into the Maryland Psychiatric Research Center, where studies continued to be performed for the advancement of psychiatric research. This study on LSD is the largest study on psychedelic drugs to date. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/art-mcdermott/support
