Today I have the pleasure of speaking with the Founders of Anomaly, Petr Esposito and Liam Spencer.  Anomaly is an award-winning London-based architecture practice that specialise in creative office spaces and injecting new life into old buildings no matter what the sector. ‘Traditional architecture, new direction' is the mantra they work to; challenging traditions in a world of expectation, they aim to deliver the unexpected and get the most out of every retrofit they get their hands on.  Co-founders, Liam and Petr, started Anomaly in 2017 without a house style, and intending to approach projects for their merits, ensuring every building has their story told.  Petr is a graduate of the Bartlett School of Architecture and Ravensbourne University, with a decade of experience working for internationally renowned practices. He has a great depth of experience from the commercial to the playful, has been involved in notable commercial retrofit projects, and led several residential schemes across London.  Liam studied at the University of Edinburgh (ESALA) and the University of Westminster and oversees all retrofit projects, employing his skill for storytelling and unlocking value to deliver massing and strong brands for leasing. His unrelenting attitude to design enables him to provide support to clients' decision-making in developing a brief, protecting commercial interests, and producing high-quality architecture.  Anomaly has recently won planning and listed building consent for 40,000 sq ft of Grade II space in the heart of Shoreditch. They'll be interconnecting 7 buildings, threading a new core within listed sheer walls, retaining and refurbishing key listed elements, delivering a new fully accessible terrace landscape to the rear of the building, adding mezzanines on the ground floor and level 04, and featuring a staircase running through the building… to name a few.  They've also recently been announced as finalists in the London Construction Awards for Architecture Firm of the Year.  In this episode, we will be discussing:  The profound impact of rebranding on business dynamics and client perceptions. Navigating the complexities of rapid growth and contraction within the firm. Leveraging brand identity to enhance market presence and client engagement. Strategies for fostering a strong, cohesive team culture amidst business evolution.   To learn more about Petr & Liam visit their:  Website: https://anomaly.london/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/anomalylondonarchitecture/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/anomaly.london/   ► Transcription: https://otter.ai/u/41oJkzxZBLUsM78W59-GS0Pepxw?utm_source=copy_url ► Feedback? How I Became ...
E14 How To Buy Companies For Multi-Millions | The Story of Ad Association CEO Stephen Woodford

How I Became ...

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 5, 2023 99:15

Stephen's interest in advertising came from his favourite subjects at school – art and economics – and so he looked for a career that combined the creative and the commercial. He also was an avid reader of the ads and used to make montages of the ads from magazines as part of his art course and this helped set his heart on working in advertising. Stephen studied economics and graduated in 1980, at a time when the economy was in recession and jobs were scarce. He applied for agency and marketing graduate training roles and found his start in a marketing at Nestlé. After a couple of years, he moved into the agency world, working at Lintas, then at a start-up agency and finally he joined WCRS for the first time in 1988. He left for Leo Burnett to be Deputy MD and then re-joined WCRS in 1994, becoming Managing Director and later CEO in 1998. The agency was something of a rollercoaster ride and he saw it through some lean and some great years, notably winning its biggest pitch ever, winning the National Lottery in 1998 and with an array of formidable campaigns for clients such as Carling, BMW, First Direct, 118 118 and Orange. The management team bought the agency from Havas in 2004 and relaunched it with a group of companies under the Engine brand. Stephen was then approached to join DDB and become Chief Executive there in 2007. DDB and its forerunner, BMP was agency he had admired most throughout his career, but it had suffered from management instability, and he helped to secure its position and get back to something like its old form. In 2011, a small-hours conversation in Cannes with James Murphy and David Golding started the ball rolling for DDB to buy adam&eve. Months of top-secret negotiations followed, but not so secret that rumours leaked ahead of the deal being done. Finally in 2012 the agencies merged and Stephen became Chair of adam&eveDDB. 18 months later, Stephen left to pursue other ventures, starting a financial services business, along with working at Next 15 Plc (who years later bought Engine coincidentally). Stephen became CEO of the Advertising Association in September 2016. The AA's mission is ‘to promote the role and rights of responsible advertising - advertising that is trusted, inclusive and sustainable – and its value to people, society, businesses and the economy'. All the leading media owners and trade bodies are members of the AA. Stephens's past board roles include Deputy Chair of Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust and Chairman, Changing Faces, a facial disfigurement charity. He is also a past President of the IPA and of NABS. He is currently a Governor of Ravensbourne University, London and is on the board of the History of Advertising Trust. The centre piece of our second episode is guest host Savina Petkova's interview with Ruben Östlund about his latest film Triangle of Sadness. This follow-up to the The Square, which also won the top prize at Cannes, is another acerbic satirical intervention into the hypocrisies of liberal capitalism. "Triangle" is perhaps more laugh out loud funny than his previous work, but draws on similar socio-political observations that are all too familiar but presenting them through a thought experiment which reverses hierarchies of power around wealth, value, class and social roles.  Also, Dario talks to the LFF director Tricia Tuttle who is ending her 5 year tenure-ship this year. They discuss her legacy particular around accessibility, weathering Covid, and the expansion of programming to encompass many different forms of cinematic experience. Also the political role of festivals comes up and Tricia gives her thoughts on the collapse of the Edinburgh film festival and the many challenges that UK cinema-going faces. Dario also talks to a student from Ravensbourne University, Tom Wright, who came to the festival as part of the BFI academy programme. He waxes lyrical about Mark Jenkins' Enys Men, which of course we will be hoping to cover in-depth in an upcoming episode.  And Dario and Savina round up by talking about a few of the other festival highlights including Mia Hansen Love's One Fine Morning and Charlotte Wells' directorial debut Aftersun. --- You can listen to The Cinematologists for free, wherever you listen to podcasts: click here to follow. Eight Inc. are often referred to as Apples best-kept secret due to the fact they are responsible for the renowned Apple Store design. A multi-discipline experience design studio, with 200+ strategic designers and business creatives connected across 11 studios, 6 time zones and 3 continents, Eight.Inc design holistic, human-centric experiences for world-renowned brands including Tesla, Estee Lauder, Coach, Virgin and Nike. Before joining Eight Inc. Steve, a Ravensbourne University architecture graduate, co-founded Postnormal, collective of like-minded international designers that established a creative presence through a series of both collaborative and individual interior, installation and exhibition projects in Tokyo. He went on to create, Steve Lidbury Design Studio and completed projects in Japan and China that earned him the recognition as a flagship for British design in Japan. Returning to the UK, Steve took up the role as European Creative Director of the Luxury Automotive Group at Imagination, creating multichannel brand experiences for the likes of Jaguar, Land Rover, Aston Martin and Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. Steve’s approach to life and work, is to make most of life by exploring the world, it’s different cultures and people which intern drives him to use design as a tool for creating better human outcomes and conditions for the greater good. Just before lockdown, we sat down with Steve to record a podcast. Since then we’ve checked back to see if Covid-19 has shifted his thoughts around Monochannel, but he assured us that it’s even more important than ever to create a consistent and connected brand experience. An experience that is driven by emotions, sensations, and desires. In our podcast, we discuss what the future of brand and customer interaction could feel like, and how adopting a Monochannel strategy will change the way we do business. Some brands, particularly small businesses, they may not feel the need to create a strategy to ensure customer records and interactions are unified. However, regardless of business size or ambition to grow, we all have to make sure we understand who our customers are and what they each want. A relationship is a two-way thing, and if there’s an imbalance of that relationship the customer will move onto another brand who treats them well. It’s time to make sure that doesn’t happen because from a brands perspective it costs a lot more to acquire a new customer than it does to keep an existing one happy! www.blackneondigital.com

Lucid dreaming, Hypnagogia, Astral Travel, Sleep Temples, Dream diary... all terms related to sleep and dream which play an important role in the World of the Western Esoteric Tradition. And our guest in today's interview, Sarah Janes, knows all about them.   Sarah Janes is an independent researcher exploring ancient ideas about dreaming, sleep medicine and dream incubation. An enthusiastic lucid dreamer since childhood, Sarah hosts regular workshops, gives talks on the subject and is also creating a dream initiation inspired VR experience with Carl H. Smith and others of Ravensbourne University, London. Sarah believes dreaming to be a forgotten superpower of remembrance and healing and her muse is the goddess Mnemosyne, Greek Titaness and personification of memory, often the last deity to be invoked during dream healing rituals in the sleep temples of ancient Greece. Enjoy a fascinating talk with Sarah!   Sarah Janes' Official Website Music played in this episode 1) APOPHIS - by Mageia Mageia is a young musician from Salzburg, Austria. The song is telling a story of the eternal cycle of light and darkness, of life and death - even of all things that are in extreme opposition to each other. Sometimes you fight to rise again from darkness, and sometimes you triumph before you fall again.
