We're only six months into Trump 2.0 and things are getting bad fast. He was looking for a fight. And he found it. Unrest in Los Angeles has been met with a mobilization of troops that few predicted. But your host, Paul Rieckhoff, did. For five years we've been sounding the alarm. Thinking the unthinkable—that has often come true. From COVID, to Trump refusing to leave office, to the January 6th insurrection, to armed violence and now troops in the streets—-this is one episode you can't afford to miss. And in times like these you need to hear from voices of experience, voices of calm, and voices of reason. Barbara Starr is all that and more and she joins Paul for a no bullshit look at where we are—and where we are going. She's a renowned journalist, an Emmy award winning producer, and a former CNN Pentagon correspondent. She spent 21 years reporting from hotspots including Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Yemen, the Horn of Africa and the Chinese-North Korean border and is one of the most recognizable faces in conflict reporting. She's reported extensively on fallen and wounded troops, as well as the plight of homeless veterans. She's seen and covered it all. She's one of the best in the business and there isn't anybody else we'd rather talk to about all of it. So as the world turns increasingly chaotic and dangerous, take a couple minutes to listen to this conversation, get yourself smarter and get ready for what comes next. Buckle up. And welcome to Independent Americans, Episode 338. Every episode is the truth beyond the headlines–and light to contrast the heat of other politics and news shows. Bryant Kagay is a farmer in Missouri feeling the uncertainty of President Donald Trump's tariffs up close. He voted for Trump last year but now questions whether the trade war with China is part of a long-term strategy that could help US businesses or merely a short-term negotiating tactic. In this episode of More To The Story, he says the on-again, off-again nature of the trade war could restrict his ability to sell agricultural goods like soybeans when the harvest comes this fall.Producer: Josh Sanburn | Editor: Kara McGuirk-Allison | Theme music: Fernando Arruda and Jim Briggs | Digital producer: Nikki Frick | Interim executive producers: Brett Myers and Taki Telonidis | Executive editor: James West | Host: Al Letson Donate today at Revealnews.org/more Subscribe to our weekly newsletter at Revealnews.org/weekly Follow us on Instagram and Bluesky Listen: The Many Contradictions of a Trump Victory (Reveal)Listen: What Trump's Tariff Shock Will Cost You (More To The Story)Read: Trump's Assault on Small Farmers (Mother Jones) Learn about your ad choices: dovetail.prx.org/ad-choices
We’re experimenting with something. As we work toward a complete breakdown of the federal budget in a comprehensive essay and companion episode, we’re bringing our audience into the content creation process. We have a feeling this is going to be one of our behemoth entries into the canon (and potentially a two-parter.) So rather than overwhelm everyone with information in one shot, we thought it would be useful to break it apart as we go. The first two entries made it to YouTube already but I’m packaging them up in a single episode today. The first is how the GOP budget disproportionately impacts red states. And not in a good way. The second brings us back to our Modern Monetary Theory (MMT) discussions and reframes the way we think about the national debt. Both are crucial building blocks in our understanding of the federal budget. Access the episode resources. Democrats in total grief over the loss of the cherished family. They're just innocent illegal immigrants. Okay. Yeah. They overstayed their abuses too, but we gotta keep them. I mean, one of them is, like, four. The rest are like teens and stuff. We have to wait to keep them. They're they're they're future Democrat voters. There's Sunni Muslims. They vote 92% Democrat. I mean, it's not fair. It's not fair. We can't do this anymore when a judge agrees what the the family gets to say. Are you kidding me? Are you kidding me? Is this a joke? And folks, Bunchy over at Red State absolutely nails this this morning. How Trump has come out with the travel ban? He's right. He says this isn't complicated. If judges are going to make it impossible to deport deport visa overstays from Islamist countries, then the only alternative is to stop issuing visas to those countries completely. That's exactly what Trump did yesterday. We're we're just done here. We don't have time for Democrat judicial dictators to say this terrorists can say and this terrorist can say, and you might be a terrorist. But let's think about what the Democrat party is proposing here. Okay? Come on. Is it really fair to pick on his family? I mean, some of them are women. I mean, yeah, they're here illegally, and, yeah, their first act was to break our laws. But, you know, you know, are they just because dad decided to take a flame thrower to some Jews does not mean they're bad people. You know what's interesting about this? The number one trending story this morning on that app we have, we pay a lot of money for us so we could see what the top stories in the country are. It was a story that was popular mainly with women, and it was why is Trump blocking people from other countries. God, women are just like they're like, shit. I swear so many women are like sheep to the slaughter. Why are we in this line? I don't know. What's that bolt gun for? I don't know, Roger. I'm sure it's nothing. We're like sleep sheep to the slaughter. Why would he do that? Why can't people from Yemen come here? Oh, you mean the country with the Houthis? The ones who've been who've revived piracy and are launching, you know, drone missiles at our ships, those people? The ones with the terror training camps that we just annihilated? Yeah. They seem really nice. I mean, they do fine here. Oh, we're weak. I want you to understand why we cannot allow the family of the Colorado terrorist to stay in our country. You want to see it for yourself, you can go on my x feed. This is him driving to the slaughter. He leaves a message for his family, giving us a nice insight. You know what might have been going on in his home? Did he just randomly one day decide to incinerate some Jews? Because what's going on in Gaza is really unfair. He saw they were children. He saw there was a grandmother. It turns out she's a holocaust survivor. No. No. No. He didn't. He made it clear to his family. The message was for his family. He hates America. He hates our military. Jihad is the only way. And Allah wants us to kill Jews. How many times did his kids hear that? He seems pretty committed. Here, I'll translate for you. Allah is greater than anything. Allah is greater than the Zionist. Allah is greater than America and its weapons. Allah is greater than f 35 planes. Allah is greater than everything else. So why do we fear those who are inferior to Allah rather than fear Allah himself? I told my wife and son every day to do this, to do something, but they didn't do it. I would be angry. Maybe I would divorce my wife. Maybe what I would kick my son out of my home. What's the next line, folks? Then what about Allah who says to us every day dozens of times, Allahu Akbar. Allah wants jihad. He's talking to his kids. Do not forget Allah Akbar. Do not forget that Allah is greater than everything, he says. Not Zionist America, Britain, France, or Germany. Only a law has the right to be feared, he says. Again ...

Saving Elephants | Millennials defending & expressing conservative values
What if the real division in America isn't between Republicans and Democrats, Red States vs Blue States, or liberals and conservatives but between the American people and a small group of the political elite whose function is to divide the rest of us? Tony Woodlief joins Saving Elephants host Josh Lewis to discuss how we may not be as divided as we think and how federalism holds the solution to many of the policy battles of the moment. About Tony Woodlief Excerpts from Tony's bio in the State Policy Network and on his author page: Tony Woodlief is State Policy Network's Senior Executive Vice President and Senior Fellow for SPN's Center for Practical Federalism. He helps oversee SPN operations, supports SPN's president in her guidance of the leadership team, and helps ensure the organization's projects and programs measure success, evolve as SPN grows, and maintain alignment with our vision and mission. Tony previously served as president of the Bill of Rights Institute, and before that the Market-Based Management Institute. He has also served as president of the Mercatus Center at George Mason University. An alumnus of the University of North Carolina, he has a Ph.D. in political science from the University of Michigan, and an MFA from Wichita State University. Tony has appeared in media outlets including Fox News, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Post, National Review, and C-SPAN's Washington Journal. Tony Woodlief is also an author. His short fiction has appeared in Image, Reckon Review, Ruminate, Dappled Things, and elsewhere. His story “Name” received a Pushcart Honorable Mention in 2010, and was included in Image Journal's 25th anniversary anthology. Tony's spiritual memoir, Somewhere More Holy, was listed among Image's top ten works of 2010. His most recent book is the novel We Shall Not All Sleep. Tony is also the author of I, Citizen: A Blueprint for Reclaiming American Self-Governance. In writing I, Citizen, Tony conducted extensive research on American public opinion to find out what Americans believe and uncover the source of their political animosities. Through his research, Tony discovered that America is more united than divided, despite what the pundits tell us, and traced the source of our perceived animosity to a small minority of dedicated partisans within the political establishment of Washington, DC. I, Citizen tells the story of how these partisans have created the myth of a divided America and how they've concentrated power in the hands of unelected bureaucrats and partisan elites, and offers practical solutions for how we can reclaim our right to self-governance by focusing on solutions and commonalities closer to home.

In this explosive episode, Tara and Lee unpack two of the hottest stories shaking the nation. First, they break down the massive migration trends making the Carolinas top destinations as Americans flee Democrat-led cities like Los Angeles and Chicago — and what that means for Upstate South Carolina. Then, the conversation takes a sharp turn into new revelations about illegal immigrant voter fraud, including a federal ruling in Arizona, ongoing investigations, and shocking arrests. From surging real estate to election integrity scandals, this episode connects the dots and pulls no punches.

Georgia and Arkansas have both tried to implement work requirements for Medicaid, with both producing disastrous results. Now Republicans in Congress want to impose those work requirements on a national level and seem oblivious to the idea's previous failure and the regret expressed by fellow Republicans for their role in it.
Deutsche Bank, one of Donald Trump's go-to lenders for all of his businesses, warned this week that the US economy is suffering "death by a thousand cuts" from Trump's policies and those of the rest of the Republican Party. All of these small cuts are causing a massive bleed that is sending our economy into a downward spiral, and not a single Republican seems to even care that they are doing this. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. became insanely irate during a Senate hearing this week when Democratic Senator Patty Murray asked him a simple question about who cut the funding for child healthcare programs. Kennedy first tried to blame Biden, then he viciously attacked Murray for doing nothing to stop diseases, and after he was reprimanded by the Chair of the Committee, he sheepishly admitted that his department cut the funding he was trying to deny was cut. The man is way over his head.Republican governors and the Senators from their red states have resorted to begging Donald Trump's administration for federal assistance after they were ravaged by tornadoes over the last month. So far, the administration has not declared a federal disaster for any of the affected areas, which is preventing any FEMA officials or assistance from being deployed. Again, this is how Trump is treating RED STATES that put him in office - ignoring their cries for help after catastrophe.Donald Trump told reporters on Tuesday of this week that he doesn't want the "big beautiful bill" that Republicans are working on to benefit Democratic-controlled states because, as Trump put it, those states and the Democrats running them are ruining the country. He also falsely claimed that Red States are the ones making America great again, which is why they should reap all the benefits. The problem is that the Republican bill doesn't help ANY states - Red or Blue - but it does screw over Red States far more thoroughly. More than ever our work as yoga teachers is challenging and important. We don't want to be like this lady, right? Trying to sell people something they don't need while their house burns down? People need yoga, but they need the kind of yoga that supports awareness, connection and care (which could mean lots of different things for different students and teachers!). People do not need the kind of yoga that encourages disconnection and shutting down. Over the last two months we've been exploring how to address current events in your yoga classes, first wth a solo episode: Should You Talk About Current Events In Yoga Classes?? ... and then I looped my friend Hari-Kirtana into the conversation and he shared How To Give a Dharma Talk When The World Is On Fire. And today we are diving into Part 2, What The Teachings Say About Current Events with Hari-kirtana Das (PART 2)! In this episode, you'll hear: how to make the connections between current events and yoga philosophy what are "the teachings?" ...an observation of the range of yoga wisdom traditions to draw from what does yoga epistemology (pramana) say what do yoga's core principles / ethics / values say advice for Red State yoga teachers examples of on the spot created dharma talks based on actual current events Hari-kirtana das (he/him) is a yoga teacher, spiritual mentor, and the author of two books on yoga philosophy: Journey Into the Bhagavad Gita: A Guide to Exploring Timeless Principles of Transcendental Knowledge and Integrating Them Into Your Life and In Search of the Highest Truth: Adventures in Yoga Philosophy. This Day in Legal History: Blue Jeans PatentedOn May 20, 1873, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office granted Patent No. 139,121 to Jacob Davis and Levi Strauss for an innovation that would revolutionize American workwear and fashion: the use of copper rivets to reinforce the stress points on men's work pants. Davis, a tailor from Reno, Nevada, originally developed the concept after customers complained about the durability of their trousers. He lacked the funds to file for a patent on his own, so he partnered with Strauss, a San Francisco dry goods merchant who had been supplying him with fabric. The riveted pants were constructed from denim—a sturdy cotton twill that Strauss already sold—which was tough enough for laborers, miners, and cowboys during the American Westward Expansion. The legal protection granted by the patent secured exclusive rights for Strauss and Davis to produce the reinforced trousers, giving them a significant advantage in the market. This protection enabled Levi Strauss & Co. to expand rapidly and establish itself as a dominant force in durable clothing for manual laborers. The patent also illustrates how intellectual property law can incentivize practical innovation by providing a framework for commercial exclusivity. While the original patent expired in 1890, the riveted jean had by then become an entrenched part of American identity. The evolution of the product—from utilitarian workwear to a global fashion staple—highlights how a simple legal instrument can underpin lasting commercial success. The legal recognition of their invention helped formalize what would become a uniquely American contribution to the world's wardrobe. Strauss and Davis's patent remains one of the most iconic examples of how intellectual property law intersects with design, utility, and culture. As federal AI regulation lags, state attorneys general (AGs) are stepping into the void by using existing laws—such as consumer protection, privacy, and anti-discrimination statutes—to govern the use of generative AI technologies. Although only California, Colorado, and Utah have passed AI-specific legislation, AGs across other states are issuing formal guidance and taking enforcement actions to address AI misuse. Key concerns include the use of personal data, deepfakes, fraudulent representations, and algorithmic bias in sectors like hiring, healthcare, and lending.California AG Rob Bonta has warned that AI tools causing misleading or discriminatory outcomes may violate state law, especially in sensitive fields like health and employment. Massachusetts AG Joy Campbell cautioned that misrepresenting AI capabilities or using AI-generated content to deceive consumers could breach the state's Consumer Protection Act. Oregon's guidance focuses on transparency, privacy, and anti-discrimination concerns, requiring consent for data use and allowing opt-outs from significant AI-based decisions. New Jersey's AG launched a Civil Rights and Technology Initiative targeting algorithmic bias, noting that even third-party tools can trigger liability under anti-discrimination laws. Texas AG Ken Paxton reached a settlement with an AI health tech firm over potentially misleading marketing, marking the first known AG enforcement action under consumer protection law involving generative AI.A Reuters column by Ashley Taylor of Clayton Friedman and Gene Fishel of Troutman Pepper Locke LLP emphasizes that companies cannot assume regulatory immunity simply because AI tools are new or complex. Liability can arise from disparate impacts alone, even absent intent to discriminate. Firms must carefully audit their AI systems, clarify marketing claims, and ensure fair and secure implementation across jurisdictions. Given the fragmented legal landscape, businesses should involve legal and technical leadership early in AI deployment to reduce risk exposure.State AGs fill the regulatory voidThe long-running feud between Donald Trump and New York Attorney General Letitia James has escalated sharply with a federal investigation now targeting James herself. Trump, having returned to the White House, now has the Justice Department behind him, while James continues to lead Democratic opposition through lawsuits challenging his policies. Both known for their combative styles, the two have clashed over ideology, politics, and Trump's business practices. The new front in their battle involves allegations that James committed mortgage fraud, based on documents where she allegedly misrepresented her primary residence and misstated details about her Brooklyn property. The Justice Department, acting on a referral from a federal housing agency, is investigating the claims through its offices in Virginia and New York. James's lawyer denies wrongdoing, saying the filings were accurate in context and reflect long-standing property use.James has framed the investigation as retaliation for her successful legal actions against Trump, including a high-profile civil fraud suit that resulted in a $450 million judgment against him for inflating asset values. Trump and his allies have attempted to link James's alleged conduct to the very behavior she prosecuted, suggesting hypocrisy.Despite the legal risks, the public feud may benefit both figures politically. James faces re-election in 2026, and her confrontation with Trump plays well with Democratic voters. For Trump, casting James as a corrupt adversary energizes his base. Their mutual antagonism has become a defining feature of New York's political and legal landscape.Donald Trump and Letitia James Raise Stakes in Bitter Feud - WSJThis week in my column for Bloomberg, I argue that House Republicans' push to repeal major clean energy tax credits from the Inflation Reduction Act is a short-sighted move that prioritizes fiscal optics over long-term national interest. While they claim to be reducing the deficit, the repeal would do little to constrain the $3.7 trillion cost of extending Trump-era tax cuts that largely benefit the wealthy. The energy credits being cut were not handouts but performance-based incentives—rewards for building, hiring, and deploying clean tech—that sparked a manufacturing and jobs boom, particularly in red states like Georgia and Tennessee.Eliminating these credits would introduce severe policy instability, undermining both current and planned investments. Companies made long-term siting and hiring decisions based on stable tax incentives; reversing them now would not only threaten those investments but signal to global capital markets that the U.S. is an unreliable industrial partner. I emphasize that the structure of the law—tying incentives to emissions reductions—was one of its best features, offering predictability that's now at risk. This volatility would be a gift to America's competitors. The EU and China are doubling down on green industrial policy, while the U.S. risks stalling momentum just as it began catching up. Trust in federal policy durability isn't easily regained once lost. The repeal wouldn't just cost jobs or projects—it would damage the credibility of American industrial policy in a global race where we're already behind. This is a public episode. Many listeners may not be aware that, along with other red states like Texas, Tennessee has been a red state incubator for the Heritage Foundation's plans for this country as most recently stated in their Project 2025 agenda. My state's role as both an incubator and implementer of Project 2025 has been going on for almost a decade now but especially since Trump regained office this past January. I think I can safely say: “What often happens in the Tennessee legislature, does not stay in the state of Tennessee.”In this podcast episode recorded at the end of April before the ICE traffic stops and arrests started in Nashville, I interviewed Tennessee House Rep for District #51 representing downtown Nashville and East Nashville, Aftyn Behn. As a member of the superminority in the state legislature, we discuss what she considers the highs and lows of this year's Tennessee House session, what will be the end results of some of the laws enacted this session, along with a little bit about the budget our Governor signed too. Listeners will be able to find more details on all we discussed at AftynBehn.com and on her Substack. So grab a cup of coffee or a glass of sweet tea and settle in for what is sure to be an interesting listen. . . Mama B.

Chuck Todd opens with a blistering analysis of America's current political landscape, arguing that both major parties are fundamentally weak and surviving only through their duopoly of ballot access. He examines the potential for political realignment, questioning whether MAGA and establishment Republicans might fracture and if figures like Senator John Cornyn would fare better as independents. Chuck doesn't hold back on the Biden administration either, calling out what he sees as selfishness from the Bidens and criticizing aides who failed to report the President's decline sooner, suggesting cabinet secretaries will need to answer for what he terms a "cover up."Then he's joined by Rob Sand, Democratic candidate for governor of Iowa, who discusses his record of uncovering government waste and his vision for the state. Sand outlines his bipartisan approach to governance and delivers a sharp critique of Iowa's school voucher program, arguing it lacks transparency and has allowed private schools to raise tuition while turning away disabled students. The conversation covers Iowa's political shift, education policy, and whether Democrats should restore Iowa's first-in-the-nation primary status. The episode concludes with "Ask Chuck," where Todd answers listener questions on topics ranging from the theoretical "Limbaugh effect" in Obama's election to the practicality of expanding the House of Representatives, and even touches on the NBA draft lottery's impact on Texas basketball teams.Timeline:00:00 Introduction01:30 Both the Republican and Democratic parties are very weak03:00 Without the duopoly of ballot access, one of the two parties would have disappeared04:30 Interparty splits and the potential for independents?06:00 Could MAGA vs establishment factions fracture in the GOP?07:30 Would John Cornyn be better served running as an independent in Texas?11:10 Republicans have too many crowded primaries in Senate races12:30 Both parties brands are broken14:30 The Bidens have been selfish16:30 Shame on the anonymous aides who didn't report Biden's decline sooner17:45 Biden's aides pushed back publicly and privately before he stepped down18:20 Biden's cabinet secretaries will have to answer for the cover up21:10 The DNC drama surrounding David Hogg23:55 The DNC looks ridiculous right now26:15 Rob Sand joins the Chuck ToddCast 26:45 Why run for governor of Iowa? 29:30 Rob found a record amount of waste and abuse in Iowa government 30:15 Did you think about running as an independent? 34:35 If you win, is it a victory for Democrats or for independents? 36:45 Rob would appoint a bipartisan cabinet 37:30 The school voucher program in Iowa isn't transparent 38:45 The public school vouchers can be audited, the private ones can't 41:15 Iowa's public schools are falling behind 43:00 Private schools can turn away disabled students 44:15 Private schools just raised tuition after voucher program rollout 45:30 What's the plan to improve public schools in Iowa? 49:10 What are some Kim Reynolds policies he would keep? 51:05 Has Iowa shifted right, or is it a Trump phenomenon? 53:15 Should Democrats make Iowa their first primary state again? 56:30 Pete Buttigieg broke through in Iowa 59:00 Lottery scam in Iowa 1:03:00 What hurts Iowa more; tariffs or the USAID contracts being terminated? 1:05:15 Does he expect a primary challenger?1:06:05 Chuck's thoughts on Rob Sand interview 1:06:30 Ask Chuck 1:06:35 Has there ever been a study on the "Limbaugh effect", encouraging Democrats to vote for Obama? 1:11:35 If you doubled the size of the House, would there be physical space constraints? 1:14:15 Would a third party like the forward party focused on a singular issue be effective? 1:17:05 The NBA draft lottery ensured that all three Texas teams will be great(Timestamps may vary based on advertisements)
