The ‘New Normal'. What It Is, and What It's Not.

Life Amplified

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 6, 2023 16:51

In a post pandemic world, we've all heard the term, ‘the new normal'. No matter how you feel about Covid, no one can deny that some things are forever changed. What Nikki doesn't agree with is the notion that no one wants to work, and those who do will be able to cherry-pick jobs. There may have been a short period of time immediately after the shutdowns when that was true, but it's definitely not ‘the new normal'. In fact, the competition for quality jobs may be more fierce than ever. If people learned anything from the pandemic, it was that they want to spend their time where they are valued.    The companies that you'll actually want to work for, the ones that treat their employees well, are not hiring just anyone. While some companies will hire just anyone to fill a spot, that is not the case for most. If a company is hiring out of desperation, that just tells you the caliber of people there won't be top notch. Nikki knows this first hand, as she's raised the bar on the type of employees she is looking for. To attract those people she's made sure her wages are competitive, and has even added some benefits. She will, however, leave the spot vacant until she finds the right fit.    So if you're falling for the social media posts, or news media, that says you can just walk right into any job, you're in for a rude awakening. If you appear unmotivated, or have no sense of urgency about finding work, you won't find it, at least not with a good company. People, more than ever, want to work for a company that cares about them. Those people are holding out for good employers, and good employers are holding out for those types of people. Be prepared to align with the culture and mission the company is striving for. If you have questions about navigating employment or how to get a promotion, feel free to reach out to Nikki on any of her socials. She'll give you honest answers as an employer and business owner.   What You'll Learn: Where a huge portion of the workforce “disappeared” to. Why it's important to align with a company's culture and mission. What type of attitude won't get you hired. And much more!   Favorite Quote: “When the employees are provided for, and know that they have support, they're going to take care of the clients.” -Nikki   _____________________________________________________________ Find Nikki on her Website here, or Email her at nikki@prissynikki.com You can also find her on Facebook, Instagram, & LinkedIn.  The Life Amplified Podcast is not your rainbows and butterflies show. In this episode, we talk about lessons learned from hiking multiple trails. We discuss how trails can help us to figure things out, and how to get started on your own solo backpacking adventures.   About Christine Christine Reed is a long-distance backpacker and author of the memoir, Alone in Wonderland. She shares her personal journey from sedentary office worker to rugged outdoorswoman in hopes of inspiring others to see something bigger for themselves-- whatever that may be. But also to remind us that a good story is about sharing something of ourselves and connecting with others. She's found in the outdoor community the first place that ever felt like home.   Christine's Links Website Instagram Tiktok  Facebook   Get 20% OFF at http://aloneinwonderland.com (where you can find Christine's book, stickers and t-shirts) with the code: INTOTHEWOODS   Listen To This Episode        What You'll Learn Where is the Wonderland Trail and why you might want to hike it How solo backpacking helps us to figure things out Benefits of solo backpacking Why thru-hiking is about finding ourselves How solo backpacking can help us to quit the comparison trap   Things We Discussed Alone in Wonderland  Empty, by Susan Burton  Go Macro bars Gu energy gels    Related Episodes 492 Lauri McKean – Overcoming Fears To Solo Adventures 466 Holly Worton ~ Adventures in Integration (now with downloadable transcript!) 419 Holly Worton ~ Getting Through the Post-Adventure Blues 414 Rebecca Walsh ~ Solo Hiking for Women 367 Holly Worton ~ Finding Yourself Through Solo Travel and Outdoor Adventures (now with downloadable transcript!)   Connect With Holly Website Facebook Instagram Twitter Pinterest Google+ LinkedIn   How to Subscribe Click here to subscribe via iTunes Click here to subscribe via RSS Click here to subscribe via Stitcher   Help Spread the Word If you enjoyed this episode, please head on over to iTunes and kindly leave us a rating and a review! I'm excited to introduce this week's guest, Helen Lear-Grant. Helen has traveled to many of the remote places I want to visit in Scotland, like the Inner and Outer Hebrides. In this episode, we talk about adventures in the Hebrides, and also Helen's adventures as a disability travel blogger. We explore how her adventures have changed her life, and what she's achieved with her adventures that she didn't think was possible.   About Helen Helen is a disability travel blogger based in Scotland, exploring all of the fantastic wheelchair-accessible things that Scotland has to offer. Originally from England, she moved to Scotland 9 years ago and was diagnosed with a rare neurological condition less than a year later. Overwhelm often comes from thoughts like…I have so much to do. I don't know what to do. I'm so behind.I don't know where to start. I'll never get this all done. I suck. These are just thoughts. They are sentences in your head. They aren't necessarily true. But thinking them can lead you to become overwhelmed and self-critical.Sometimes the simple act of writing all the things down that are in your head can help you feel less overwhelmed. In this episode I'm walking you through a simple exercise called “The Holiday Thought Dump” Doing a holiday thought dump helps you clear out all of the jumble of junk in your mind, leaving space for your brain to work out solutions. Sometimes the key to overwhelm is just about giving your brain one task to solve at a time. The other cool thing I teach you in today's episode is the YES list. What happens when you dump out all the things you “have” to do, is that you can start thinking about the things you want to do! Kick off December 2022 with hope and clarity, instead of overwhelm and grumpiness. You'll Learn:✅ Where overwhelm comes from✅ How a holiday thought dump helps give you clarity✅ Prompts to get you thinking about what you WANT to do this holiday✅ Permission to stop worrying about other people's feelings. Not only is he on the show today, Brad Lea will be a guest speaker at the next Alpha Dog Pound Live. To learn more about the event and score discounted tickets for a limited time, visit underdogempowerment/events. Brad is the man to talk to when it comes to building a powerful personal brand. With millions of followers, Brad knows what it takes.  Brad has assembled the best media team out there, spending about $40k/month on media. The immediate return may not always be monetary, sometimes it's connections and opportunities, but at the end of the day he's getting a great ROI. A lot of people trying to build a personal brand don't have that kind of money, or any money, to spend on content creation. The answer to that problem is to learn to do it yourself. The quality may not be the best to begin with, but if you're being you and capturing it on film, you're going to find your audience.  Just like everyone, Brad has had his share of adverse experiences, but he's a firm believer in not dwelling on the past. Gratitude is a core value for Brad and one he practices every day. During his morning routine he spends 30 minutes focusing on what he's grateful for, along with 30 minutes focusing on relationships, 30 on gaining new information, and so on. Gaining new information is extremely important to Brad, as we do what we do because of what we believe. If we want to change our beliefs on something, we need to gather new information on it.  Brad considers himself blessed and is extremely grateful for all that he has, but he still wants more, and there's nothing wrong with that. He gets more by reading, listening, and asking questions. He learns a lot, but most importantly he implements what he learns. We all have access to seemingly unending information, but so many of us don't put what we learn into action. We all have intuition that we should work on honing in on. When you listen to your intuition, things tend to work themselves out. When you feel like it's time to focus more on family, do it. You don't have to ignore your family to grow a business, you can include them! When that's not an option, focus on being fully focused during the time you do have with them. It really is quality of time over quantity.  Whether or not it's known by the masses, we all have a personal brand. If we want a personal brand that's going to serve us, we need to produce content to attract an audience. Brad recommends a minimum of 4 videos a day. Because of social media algorithms, not all of your followers will see all of your content. If you think a personal brand isn't worthwhile, Brad offers that he spent 21 years building his first 8-figure company without a personal brand, and built 3 more in the last 8 months with a personal brand.  What You'll Learn: Where to start with building a personal brand. Why it's important to let things go. How to practice an attitude of gratitude. And much more! I want to make you dizzy.   I want to make you look up into the sky and comprehend, maybe for the first time, the darkness that lies beyond the evanescent wisp of the atmosphere, the endless depths of the cosmos, a desolation by degrees   These two lines begin an incredible poem called “Disorientation”... by Katie Mack.   Did you feel dizzy reading it? I did. I do!   What is the universe? Where did it come from? What was here before it? How long has it lasted? How long will it last? How could it ... end?   Do you remember being a little kid and it maybe suddenly hitting you that there was this overwhelming gigantic thing we were a part of that was almost too vast to even comprehend? I feel like a lot of us have that feeling. Sort of reminds me of this super-short clip from Annie Hall where 8-year old Alvy Singer is taken to the doctor by his mother because the vastness of the cosmos has suddenly hit him.   Why isn't he doing his homework? "What's the point?" he concludes.   That's one reaction. But if you're Katie Mack growing up in California you run the other way. You pick up a book called A Brief History of Time by Stephen Hawking and continue chasing these near-impossible questions and just never, never stop. Katie kept asking these questions through her undergrad in Physics at CalTech and her PhD in Astrophysics from Princeton before she launched into even more fascinating work like, no big deal, building a dark matter detector.   Today Dr Katie Mack is a theoretical astrophysicist who studies a range of questions in cosmology -- i.e., the study of the universe from beginning to end. Her wonderful, recent bestselling book The End of Everything (Astrophysically Speaking) is a New York Times bestseller and goes through a very helpful history of the universe before exploring a number of different ways the universe might end. At times complex, but often (thankfully) accessible, reading her book is like hanging out with a really, really smart friend, illuminating what is going on up there.   Since June 2022, Katie is the Hawking Chair in Cosmology and Science Communication at the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics. This is a relatively new institute based in Waterloo, Canada, and it's where Katie does research on dark matter and the early universe and engages in conversations, like the one we are having today, to make physics more accessible to the general public. So: she does podcasts! And: she's extremely viral! I highly recommend you join the 426,367 people who currently follow her on Twitter @AstroKatie.   Let's talk big puzzles, time, malleable fabric, wordplay, living on mars, the possibility of alien life, "colonizing" space, Katie's 3 most formative books, and much, much more.   This is a mind expanding conversation. You'll hear me playing catch-up the whole time. Not sure I ever caught up, or ever will, but Katie is a gift to the world.   Let's flip the page into Chapter 112 now…   What You'll Learn: Where are we in the universe? What is the true definition of time? How does time work? Do calendars reflect time? How do we define the future? Is there other life in the universe? What is a back-up book? Why is the term colonization wrong for space? Is astrology a science? What is the smallest scale of measurement in the universe? What is the largest scale of measurement in the universe? They only want guests they believe will deliver value. A lot of men called 'elders' in the Church today are not functioning as biblical elders. Maybe what they are actually doing is a lot closer to the work of the deacons? Many cling to their titles when in fact they're not leading God's people by example on the only mission Jesus gave his church: make disciples. In this episode of the Everyday Disciple Podcast, Caesar goes deep into the examples and commands in the Bible concerning the role, tone, and function of early church elders and deacons. We need a lot more of this today! In This Episode You'll Learn: Where early church elders were found and how they were appointed. What happened after deacons were first established in the church. Surprising! The living, present example our church elders should play in disciple-making. I'm not talking about acquaintances. I'm talking about relationships... friends. Shouldn't our elders, our “examples to the flock”, be rock-star disciple-makers, living the same way Jesus and his disciples did?"
