Women changemakers share stories and frustrations around Women's Safety in Greater Manchester. Our 14th Podcast came about when students from MMU approached to to create and facilitate this conversation - so why are we still talking about women's safety in 2023? Trigger Warning : themes of violence, sexual assault and abuse. With a live recording of the panel discussion, chaired by the students of MMU and hosted by The Old Abbey Taphouse - the podcast features an incredible panel of women including :- Rachele Evaroa - Rachele is co-founder of The Old Abbey Taphouse, a passionate advocate and supporter of STEAM, equality and community - she works to bring the realms of academia, business and community together. With a breadth of experience and knowledge on all things community and how important it is to create safe and inclusive spaces, drawing on her background in events and venue management; Rachele brings great insights to the conversations surrounding the safety of women in Greater Manchester. This is particularly relevant when we look at the motivations for creating this conversation, the MMU students noted the following areas of concern for women in Greater Manchester :- High rates of antisocial behaviour being reported on the Tram Network -  averaging 242 incidents a month according to Metrolink. Recent police crime reports have shown that Manchester has seen the highest number of needle spiking cases nationally at more than 900 between 2017 -2021 - accounting for nearly 40% of country-wide cases. Last year there were almost 150,000 annual cases of domestic abuse in Greater Manchester, 42,000 of these cases were reported from within the city centre This data prompted the students from MMU, in partnership with Flourish to consider whether the borough is a hotspot for gender-based violence - and how we mitigate and address this through community action and conversation. Sharlene Small, founder of Manchester's Got Talent Youth talks all things online safety and how in a digital age, girls and women's safety in more important than ever - particularly when there is a more dominant community focus on gang crime through a male lense. Sharlene shares her own experiences relative to how safety translates online to real life and what the consequences of this can be. Dee Sheehan, who has campaigned extensively in the women's equality and safety arena for many years, working in recent years to progress the Womens Equality Party policies and having garnered significant support in challenging the opening of a Hooters branch in Salford, talks openly about the sticking points and stagnation of effective safety policies and procedures across Greater Manchester. Dee is the co-lead on Women's Safety for GM 4 Women 2028 The panel is joined by Sam, who describes herself as a feminist activist and shares personal and impactful commentary on her own experiences and challenges regarding women's safety in Greater Manchester. The questions posed by MMU students addressed the key areas of concern regarding women's safety in Greater Manchester and highlighted the gaps in the current policies and policing in and around the city - reflected and reiterated through our panels ruminations and frustrations. We hope that this podcast adds another voice to the dialogue driving forward the conversation and more importantly, the actions in facilitating a safer Manchester for all women.

Every day, in every part of the world, women are being harassed and abused by men while out running.   A recent survey commissioned by Adidas and taking in 9,000 people from the US, Mexico, UK, France, Germany, United Arab Emirates, China, Japan and South Korea, found nine in 10 women are concerned about their safety while running.   The list of issues women can face ranges from cat calling, body shaming, wolf whistles, verbal abuse and heckling to indecent exposure, sexual attention and physical contact.   Worse, women all to often face the daunting prospect of being approached or followed by potential predators, or of being attacked while out running.   In the very worst cases, women have been raped or killed for committing the 'crime' of exercising near a man.   High profile cases such as those of Ashling Murphy in Ireland and Eliza Fletcher in America, both tragically murdered while out running, have garnered media attention - but is the world any closer to solving the issue, and who's job is that anyway?   This roundtable discussion features three women runners who have all experienced abuse and harassment while out running:   Michele Heller: From Illinois in the US, Michele is a keen runner who has completed marathons included Boston, Chicago, New York and London. As a mother with a young child, Michele often runs very early in the morning, when it is dark, in order to be ready for the day when the rest of her family wake up.   Dr Ashley Morgan: From Cardiff in Wales and AKA The Doc from The Running Punks, Dr Ashley Morgan has been running for 35 years - and has experienced male harassment throughout that time. The Doc is a regular commentator on women's safety and the patriarchy, and one of those behind the Twitter hashtag #changethediscourse, which attempts to get people to think and talk about the issue differently.   Angie Skinner: From Chattanooga in Tennessee, America, Angie started running in 2014 for mental health benefits. She is originally from Memphis, close to where Eliza Fletcher was killed, and regularly receives harassment while out running - to the point where she will arm herself with pepper spray and a go guarded ring (a plastic serrated-edge self-defence weapon) for her own safety.   In this wide-ranging discussion, we spoke about everything from their own experiences of harassment and abuse, victim blaming, the potential for women runners to arm themselves for protection, whether it is safe to run in the dark, how men should behave towards female runners and what men can do to be an ally.   This podcast is aimed at provoking discussion, so we would love to hear your experiences and comments.       ----------------------------------   We'll also be producing a series of articles based on this podcast on our Substack newsletter - for just £5/month you'll be able to get full access to all our articles: https://runningtales.substack.com   Free subscription offers are also available.   Our usual Running Tales podcast episodes, featuring the stories of every day runners who have achieved extraordinary things, come out at 5.30am UK time on Tuesdays.   If you like this episode please consider donating to help us keep going: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/stepforward

Dr Ashley is also a strong voice for women's equality, insisting there is nothing intrinsic for women to fear from running in the dark - and that it is men who need to take responsibility for their actions. This week, it's an all-Newslaundry panel as host Nidhi Suresh is joined by Ayush Tiwari and Akanksha Kumar. They start by discussing Ayush's report on youngsters being framed in UAPA cases in Punjab and shoddy police probes falling apart in court. “From 2009 till date, Punjab has seen 112 UAPA cases evoked on youngsters and conviction has happened in only three of them,” says Ayush, detailing the legal aspects of UAPA and how people in Punjab have become more careful about their social media use amid all this. They then talk about Akanksha's piece on the issue of women's safety in Unnao – in poll-bound Uttar Pradesh – where the mother of a rape survivor has decided to contest elections in a bid to fight for the cause of justice for women. “She hopes to bring justice for her daughter by helping the others not meet the same fate,” says Akanksha, quoting Asha, the Congress candidate. She also mentions how politicians are talking about women's safety in the state. In similar news we are on the 60 year anniversary of the crippling blockade on Cuba. We take a look at the impact of sanctions on Cuba and other nations around the globe. Later in the show we turn our attention to the ongoing right-wing protests happening in Ottawa where truck drivers are clogging up downtown around their shared goals of opposing the vaccine mandates and lockdowns. They have raised more than $7.8 million on GoFundMe, one of the biggest campaigns in its history. Elon Musk, Donald Trump (whose flags they are waving), and others get behind to support these right-wing actions. We discuss how misinformation is legitimized and how not all protests are progressive. In our final segment, we discuss the recent report from Australia's National Research Organization for Women's Safety that found that during the pandemic Women experiencing high financial stress were three times as likely to experience physical or sexual abuse, and in particular women who were the breadwinners were 1.6 times more likely to face physical abuse. We dive into how these numbers legitimize what women on the ground already know.

Safety in public spaces can be complex. There are things that you can do to be prepared and alert in all situations. Techniques can be used to distract someone long enough to escape, no matter the size of the attacker.  Today's guest is Lieutenant Jessa Russell. Lieutenant Russell serves as the Community Relations Officer for Highland Park Department of Public Safety. In this role, she assists with crime prevention, safety education presentations, crime watch, community welfare concerns, and is the liaison to the Highland Park ISD. Lieutenant Russell began her career with Highland Park DPS in August 2008 and has served as a field training officer, defense tactics instructor, and operations supervisor.  Show Notes: [1:01] - Welcome to the podcast, Lieutenant Russell! Jessa explains how she got into law enforcement. [3:40] - Every department has different norms. Jessa describes the more common problems her department responds to. [5:10] - What is jugging? Jessa describes this crime and what to do to avoid it. [7:06] - There are more fire stations than police stations and if you are being followed, pulling into a fire station could cause them to stop. [9:01] - Always be skeptical. The world is a good place but there are bad people in it. [11:12] - Restaurants and bars are places to have a heightened situational awareness. [13:14] - If you are on a walk or run, only use one earbud. [14:51] - You have to be assertive. Political correctness will hamper you when safety is a concern. [16:30] - Park close to lights and the closer to the store the better. You can also request security officers or employees to escort you to the car. [17:49] - There are different mindsets regarding an attack. [19:12] - RAD is a program that Jessa educates through. It stands for Rape Aggression Defense. She explains the program and the training involved. [20:58] - Some women are taught to be so submissive that they don't realize they have power, which can simply be your voice. [21:54] - Training does not mean you are a fighter. The techniques are designed to escape. [24:20] - Most attackers are known to the victims, but random attacks can happen as well. [25:28] - Assertively yelling “stay away” instead of screaming for help will catch someone's attention more. [26:33] - Chris shares a story to demonstrate how bystanders may not know if the situation is serious. [28:47] - Jessa gives tips on how to help someone in danger. [29:50] - Noticing clothes is great, but noticing shoes is even better. [31:00] - Jessa explains what is important to note in describing an attacker. [34:18] - Remembering the first few characters of a license plate is often enough to help. Remembering all is very challenging. [36:50] - You need to know what to do if you are ever pulled over. [39:43] - If someone is trying to rape you and you are not fighting back, you are not at fault at all.  [41:24] - Every department has a victim liaison. [43:18] - Don't be afraid to report something and work with the police. [44:40] - Always lock doors and keep valuables in the house. [47:41] - Jessa discusses carrying a gun and the importance of knowing how to properly use it if you want to have it. Thanks for joining us on Easy Prey. False information online has left one in five girls feeling physically unsafe, according to The Truth Gap, a new report by Plan International. One in three say false information is affecting their mental health, leaving them feeling stressed, worried and anxious. Others reported concerns about bogus events advertised on social media placing them at physical risk, or unreliable medical advice that could harm their health. Girls and young women from low and middle-income countries were more likely to be affected by unreliable or false information online, and twice as likely to have questioned whether to get the vaccine than those in high income countries. The researchers are calling on governments to educate children and young people in digital literacy. It has been confirmed that the federal government was contacted by Pfizer in June 2020 to provide Australia with 40 million doses – which wasn't taken up by the government – after months of denying the story and suggesting that everyone else was wrong. There's two issues here: the constant denials – which continue to be provided by Scott Morrison and the Minister for Health, Greg Hunt – and a deal which could have delivered the Pfizer vaccines to Australia in early 2021, offered protection to the community and avoided the current lockdowns, was squandered by the federal government. And this has become critical: on a day when NSW recorded 1542 new cases of coronavirus and nine deaths, it's a issue the federal government wants the public to forget. And those merchants of collective amnesia, NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian and the NSW Government, have decided to cancel daily media conferences, even though the number of cases is going to peak in a few weeks' time. It's an abrogation of responsibility and is a tactic to avoid scrutiny and accountability. It's going to backfire. The National Summit on Women's Safety was held during the week, but it was hard not to think that the event was all about the Prime Minister and his desire to resolve the politics of the issue, rather than the issue itself. Sexual harassment, sexual violence and domestic violence perpetrated against women are serious issues in Australia – and costs the economy around $26 billion per year – but that's not enough for the Liberal Party to take enough notice of these issues and the Summit was a missed opportunity. We have been criticised for being too Sydney-centric but we have news from Victoria! – a state which has a new (but recycled) Leader of the Opposition – Matthew Guy. He was the leader of the Liberal Party at the 2018 Victoria election and lost 11 seats – leaders can become more successful when they return to the leadership a second time: Winston Churchill, John Howard, Jeff Kennett – but the successes of recycled leaders are few and far between. It's going to be hard road ahead. And the “you only had two jobs” message is starting to get through to the electorate. It's a message pushed through by federal Labor and it relates to the poor vaccination rollout, and the bungles in hotel quarantine. It's a message that can only be sustained during this current lockdown period and if NSW and Victoria ever do come out of their respective lockdowns before the next election, a new election message will need to be developed. But the Liberal–National government has had close to eight years of mismanagement and left behind a trail of incompetence. Labor shouldn't have too many problems finding other issues to campaign on.

In the week of the National Summit on Women's Safety, Sex Discrimination Commissioner Kate Jenkins joins the podcast to discuss progress – and lack of progress – on issues of vital importance to Australian women. Last week, the government passed aspects of Jenkins' Respect@Work report into law. Of the 12 recommendations which called for specific legislative reform, only six were enacted. In particular, the recommendation for placing a "positive duty" on employers to protect employees against workplace harassment has not been adopted. This cherry-picking has attracted considerable backlash.  Jenkins intends to continue pressing the government on the six unimplemented measures. "When they gave their full response to the 55 recommendations in April [the government] did indicate they would do some legislative reform now and they would take longer to consider the other six." "So they haven't said no to me right now, and I am going to hold them to their commitment that they will continue to consider those reforms." The women's safety summit came when the conversation about this issue is front of mind, following marches early this year, sparked by the Brittany Higgins' allegation of rape in Parliament House, and the allegation of historical rape against Christian Porter, which he denies. Jenkins says achieving gender equality is an issue in "many other Western countries" but Australia ranks 50th on the World Economic Forum Global Gender Gap Index. "We started in 2006 at, I think it was, 15. So [...] other countries have been really moving at a faster pace than we have." "We are world-leading in terms of [...] educating women and girls. So the problem does tend to arise once those women leave university, get streamed into lower paid jobs, get expected to stay at home, don't have access to good, flexible, affordable childcare. There's a whole range of things that then build up in the Australian community. And I think it's time we change that."

As well as her interviews with politicians and experts, Politics with Michelle Grattan now includes “Word from The Hill”, where she discusses the news with members of The Conversation politics team. In this episode, politics + society editor Amanda Dunn and Michelle discuss the criticism Scott Morrison has already faced this week.  Firstly, his trip to Sydney to visit his family for Father's Day, which required a special exemption to return to Canberra, brought a sharp backlash when so many families couldn't reunite for the weekend. The PM didn't breach the rules – but did fail the pub test. Secondly, while his address to the National Summit on Women's Safety acknowledged that "Australia has a problem" when it comes to ensuring women feel safe, critics including Australian of the Year Grace Tame are scathing of his and his government's performance.

Have you ever felt frightened or intimidated when out walking alone? Have you ever wondered what you should do if approached by an attacker? Sadly, this is the society that we face where everyone, but mostly women, have to fear when going outside because of the horrible things that humans do to one another. Hosts Diya Hituvalli and Nihal Gill offer tips to keep you safe. Diya has created a FREE app called KeepMeSafe. It is a voice recognition technology to help the user in times of need. The user can simply press “Activate KeepMeSafe” when they feel unsafe. The voice recognition software will listen to the user, and if the user says “Help”, it will play a loud alarm sound to scare away the attacker Also, when “KeepMeSafe” is activated, the app will start tracking the user's location, and if the user says “Help”, it will send a readymade text message to 911 with the user's location. In addition, as an official NGO, KeepMeSafe is a coalition of youth and women fighting to empower women everywhere by providing them with tools and technologies which can be used to protect themselves in dangerous situations. Nihal continues the conversation with tips that women can use when they feel threatened. A few tips include practicing awareness, using your sixth sense, taking self-defense training, and always alerting a trusted friend or family member of your location. Make sure to download KeepMeSafe for FREE on the iOS App Store, it is the one with the pink logo. Also follow KeepMeSafe on Instagram @keepmesafecorp ! In the seventh episode of the Feminist City, Sneha Visakha is in conversation with Dr. Shilpa Phadke, one of the authors. They talk about the ways thinking around women's safety has changed or remained the same, about women claiming political citizenship, the way ‘love jihad' is constructed to target the Muslim community while exercising control over women and girls, about how one can understand and embody the lessons of Why Loiter? a decade later in the background of the paternalistic, anti-democratic and neoliberal contexts we increasingly find ourselves in. In this episode, Sophie and I discuss her work in triage and crisis response, risk assessment, safety planning and coordination of forensic medical and general medical responses to adults and children impacted by sexual assault. Over the years Sophie has developed a non-clinical portfolio in professional education and training in the violence abuse and neglect space and has recently completed quality improvement projects around improving clinical responses to adults abused as children and streamlining interagency pathways to the recent expansion of joint referral unit criteria for child sexual assault matters. A new report has found young Australians are confused about consent and control in relationships. The National Community Attitudes towards Violence Against Women Survey found a disturbing number of young people blame women for being sexually assaulted and having their nude images shared without consent. The latest survey conducted by the National Research Organisation for Women's Safety found almost a third of men aged 16-to-24 believe many women, who say they've been raped, had instead led the man on and then had regrets. In the case of nude photos being shared without consent, more than a quarter of respondents blamed the women for sending the image, instead of her partner for sharing it.Please listen to the full report in Pashto.

Mornings with Simi
A murder in Toronto is casting light on the epidemic of domestic violence in Canada

A Toronto man who murdered his wife two days after she filed for divorce has been sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 14 years. Neurosurgeon Mohammed Shamji, 43, pleaded guilty last month to second-degree murder in the death of 40-year-old Elana Fric Shamji, a well-respected family doctor. Justice John McMahon says the case is yet another tragic instance of domestic homicide that he sees far too often.  Court heard Fric Shamji served her husband with divorce papers two days before he attacked her, broke her neck and ribs, and choked her to death as their three children slept nearby. Her mother told court at a sentencing hearing yesterday that Shamji destroyed their entire family, leaving them heartbroken and filled with rage, but they want to keep her daughter's memory alive. Domestic violence is often under reported, but statistics reveal that it's so pervasive in this country that it is considered an epidemic. A woman is killed by her current or former partner every six days in Canada. 29% of Canadian women will experience violence by their intimate partner in their lifetime. According to statistics Canada in 2017 intimate partner violence represented 30% of all police reported crime in Canada. CHUNK CHUNK! This week's episode is all about navigating everyday life while female and why our default setting seems to always be "on guard". We discuss the male gaze, rape culture, and how the media portrays and teaches both. Why also take some time to celebrate that Olivia Benson has been our role model and heroine for 17 years. And, as always, we finish with recommendations for each other.
