Everyone's been waiting for Dick Ebert to review a Wes Anderson movie. Today is that day. Will Shat The Movies' everyman embrace the whimsy and sophistication of "Rushmore," or will our red-blooded podcast elder scoff at the pretentious eccentricity of a wannabe auteur? Calling Anderson the "Beck of directors," Big D questions whether he hates the "Rushmore" director or hates himself. Ash explains his distinct style of filming, and Gene argues that Jason Schwartzman's Max is a real dick. They all agree on one point: Bill Murray is absolutely wonderful in this movie. In this episode, the Shat Crew also share a vocabulary lesson, analyze Anderson's use of slow motion, listen while Gene does math, and debate whether Max's stage productions help or hurt the movie overall. Everybody knows the scene where Tom Cruise slides out in his tighty whiteys and lip syncs Bob Seger's "Old Time Rock & Roll," but we often forget that 1983's "Risky Business" is so much more sophisticated than that. "Risky Business" is about money, growing up, acceptance, opportunity, materialism, friendship, love, and even nihilism. It treats sex workers and transgender people with respect. And it inspired a young Big D to explore his body for the first time. This one surfaces a lot of stories for a very drunk Shat Crew, including sexual exploits at Disney World, Gene's concert at his mom's house, and Big D's trip to Amsterdam. We also give advice on negotiating the price of services, the types of lovers to avoid, refractory periods, and the pressures of getting into college. Steven Spielberg famously decided to make "Little Giants" after seeing a McDonald's Super Bowl ad and exclaiming, "I want my 'Home Alone!'" He didn't quite get a blockbuster children's movie, but Spielberg might have been on to something. When you combine Rick Moranis, Ed O'Neill, and a bunch of misfit kids with football and fart jokes, parents can't help but feel squishy. But Gene Lyons isn't a parent. He also isn't a moviegoer who will tolerate easy stereotypes, inorganic relationships, dumb training montages, or sports movies with trick plays. Who will win the day in this review? Will it be Ash with her cutthroat views on child performance? Will it be Big D with his football history? Or will it be Gene hatred of storied sports franchises? It's a gridiron clash here at Shat The Movies! With her third "Shat The Movies" commission, listener Lisa triggered some really dark memories and icky feelings from Ash, Big D, and Gene. To say reviewing Larry Clark's "Kids" was difficult would be an understatement. But we're glad we did because watching this landmark independent film reminded us it's just as disturbing now as it was in 1995. Chloe Sevigny, Rosario Dawson, and Leo Fitzpatrick turned our guts inside-out in their film debuts. But did Harmony Korine write the story he'd been waiting to tell all his life, or is this just a movie meant to scare suburban moms? In this episode, we discuss rolling blunts, which drugs can actually ruin your life, the '90s HIV scare, how kids actually talk, why we were pulling for Casper, and whether teen girls are victims or young adults exercising their agency. Listener Teddy N. noticed a Richard Pryor-shaped hole in the Shat The Movies library and decided to plug it with an underappreciated classic: "Brewster's Millions." In this episode, we remember a comedic genius in his prime with a knockout supporting cast. We also find out why Big D hates the Mets, who would play a $30 million Shat on Music Festival, and which Mortal Kombat movie is superior. Along the way, we also quote Mase, celebrate a spicy John Candy, feed Big D all the rules he can stomach, hear voicemail from Hot Sauce Steve and Don Sauce, and read an "Interview with the Vampire" letter that touched our eternally damned souls. When people think of inspirational '90s football movies, one sticks out like a very short thumb. That's why inaugural Shat on Fantasy Football League winner Stephen "Happy Harry" Jenkins decided to commission the 1993 Sean Astin hit "Rudy." Have the years made us too cynical to appreciate the story of an underdog whose greatest achievement was simply getting on the field, or can the Jerry Goldsmith score and a few outstanding performances still tug at our heartstrings? Gene questions the casting of a creepy Jon Favreau and the decision to fast forward through Rudy's Vietnam years. Ash reveals how to decode the movie using hairstyles, and guest host Kevin Brackett points out the parallels with 1994's "Forrest Gump." The Shat Crew also discusses Astin's Samwise typecast, explosive foreshadowing, the misery of Notre Dame, and how close this sweet drama is to being a terrifying stalker film. The winner of the first Shat The Movies Fantasy Premier League season, listener Nick Cobs, chose as his prize one of the biggest "holy crap!" plot twists of the '90s: "The Usual Suspects." We all remember the iconic line-up scene and utterly addictive performances by Benicio del Toro, Kevin Spacey, Chazz Palminteri, and Stephen Baldwin (no, not you Gabriel Byrne). But will the Shat Crew hail Bryan Singer's breakthrough neo-noir flick as a smart, stylish ensemble mystery or dismiss it as the Fedora Guy of movies? Join us as we take another look at the crappy wig, silly heist, gratuitous vengeance, horrible police sketch, and questionable narrators that make "The Usual Suspects" worthy of the Shat treatment. In each of our lives, there's a singular moment when you know you've got one shot to get it right: a wedding vow, a eulogy, naming your first born. For Ash and Gene, this is that moment. "Interview with the Vampire" was the film that birthed them into the Darkness, a love letter to their sacred New Orleans, and the key to their portals of lust. But fear not, mortals, Big D is here to guide you through the catacombs of this 1994 gothic horror classic, keeping the podcast grounded lest we sink into Death and never surface. Is "Interview with the Vampire" timeless and immortal in its perfection, or have the years left it disconnected from a confusingly modern world? Is Tom Cruise truly Lestat de Lioncourt or just a silly little man in a bad wig? And most importantly: Is Louis de Pointe du Lac a "bitch role," or is Brad Pitt the most gorgeously brooding creature on Earth? To explore these questions, you won't need a crucifix (we're particularly fond of looking at them), just a strong stomach, an even stronger will, and contraceptives to protect yourself from the flood of infernal sex magic coming your way. Self-proclaimed John Cusack lovers Ash and Gene were shocked when listener Scott H. commissioned "One Crazy Summer." A Cusack and Savage Steve Holland team-up we'd never seen? Yes, please! But Big D knew exactly what we were in for: 1986 was his year to shine, a year when everything was coming up Ebert, and this movie took him right back to those magical days. In this episode of Shat The Movies, we get into the director's gratuitous use of animation, how hard it is for a kid to make $3,000, a debate on Bobcat Goldthwait, the difference between love and being wanted by women, and Demi Moore's singing career. Big D points out the glaring similarities between "One Crazy Summer" and "Better Off Dead." Gene questions whether the movie is secretly linked to Tori Amos. And we all shrug at logic being thrown out the window. Listener Tom in Crane, Texas, had one wish this summer: Give "National Lampoon's Vacation" the Shat treatment. Shat Nation heard the call and crowdfunded this 1983 road trip classic that reminded us of traveling with our families, the first time Big D saw boobs, singing in the car, and American icon Cousin Eddie. "Vacation" is full of twists, turns, and clever vignettes that inspired the Shat Crew to discuss a wide range of topics, including Dutch Bros. Coffee, how to treat servers, over-planning, desert survival, crappy funerals, and why Clark Griswold is the worst movie dad. Big D gets wine drunk on "grinot pigio." Ash defends Walter White, and we all agree that Beverly D'Angelo is an absolute MILF. It was only a matter of time before Shat The Movies was asked to provide serious commentary on a film adaptation of a John Steinbeck classic. Thanks to brothers Adam R. and Josh R., we're pitting "Of Mice and Men" against "Interview with the Vampire" in the first Shat on Literature challenge. This week, we question the wisdom of casting John Malkovich as an intellectually disabled giant, how much force it would take to crush a hand, and why commentary on racism was largely removed in the translation from book to film. Big D confesses he would not be able to resist a hottie in the barn. Gene drools over the misery of tragic foreshadowing, and Ash puts her professor skills on full display. Other topics include the artsy pigeon, Ray Walston's missing hand, and how having a budget sometimes hurts a piece of art. Parody Song FiverrTrying to make a silly video? When Steven Spielberg calls, you take the job. That explains the unbelievable cast of 1991's "Hook" and its $300 million box office take. But updating the tale of Peter Pan takes some serious thinking. Now that he's grown up, do you emphasize the nihilism and domestic horror? Or is this a silly kids movie? In this episode, Ash explains the literary themes that somehow got lost along the way. Gene posits that Dustin Hoffman is the greatest comedic pirate of all time (yes, even better than Johnny Depp), and Big D makes the case for having children. The Shat Crew also discusses Thudballing, Maggie Smith's reverse aging, Peter's womanizing, Tootles' doomed future, and how the movie did Rufio wrong. Most Shat The Movies features can be summed up as “great ideas gone wrong,” but what about a terrible idea gone right? On paper, 1993's “The Fugitive” sounds ridiculous: A vascular surgeon is sentenced to death but escapes to find his wife's one-armed killer while diving, punching, and spying his way to freedom. But sometimes charm, practical effects, a clever script, and non-stop thrills come together to make movie magic. This episode, the Shat Crew had to ask itself, “Were Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones really that good? Was the dam scene that exciting? Was Julianne Moore really in this movie?” Or were we all fooled by childhood excitement and nostalgia? Big D explores justice versus vengeance. Ash recalls the psychological scars left by the opening murder. And Gene once again asks why the movie's smart guy isn't smarter. No '80s movie library would be complete without "Red Dawn," the surprisingly violent movie that pitted American high school kids against a communist invasion, debuted the PG-13 rating, and turned Shat The Movies into a warzone. While Ash and Gene blast the laughably serious performances and meandering plot, Big D valiantly mounts a counterassault based mostly on Cold War hysteria and a cast that includes Patrick Swayze, Charlie Sheen, Jennifer Grey, Lea Thompson, Harry Dean Stanton, Powers Boothe (minus the mustache), C. Thomas Howell, and Ron O'Neal. Along the way, the Shat Crew battles over child abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, and audience abuse. They also discuss re-education camp security, a deleted "love scene," mystery supplies, and whether "Red Dawn" was a call to arms or an anti-war movie disguised so well as a pro-war movie that it just made American kids want to go to war. Stay tuned for the wipe scores at the end. Things get bloody. Few sci-fi movies are so shat-tacular that people accuse them of sinking the studios that made them, but "Robot Jox" isn't your average movie. Described by it's co-writer as, "a child who started out well and then sustained brain damage," this 1990 cult classic nevertheless won the hearts of a few rabid fans, including Shat The Movies mega-donor Jon M. If you like towering mechs doing battle, "Robot Jox" got it. If you like post-apocalyptic worlds, this is the movie for you. Odd wardrobe choices? You bet. Faithful adaptations of Greek epics? Might wanna check with Ash on that one. From chauvinism to chainsaw wieners to referees who make FIFA look fair, "Robot Jox" really has something for everyone. I've you've ever wondered why Richard Grieco never made it on the big screen, this 1991 box office flop might be to blame. But was "If Looks Could Kill" really all that bad? The supporting cast is fantastic, the parody of James Bond films is a lot of fun, the sex appeal is there, and the memorable one-liners keep you smiling. But this movie is far from perfect. Grieco's face looks rubbery, he's in his mid-20s, and the plot really doesn't make sense. Who sends their kid to France for failing French? Shat The Movies super-supporter Emmett is back with a rare genre of film: apocalyptic religious horror pregnancy porn. "The Seventh Sign" features a young Demi Moore playing the most active mom-to-be in cinematic history, Jurgen Prochnow from "Das Boot" playing (spoiler alert) Jesus, and Michael Biehn from "The Terminator," "Aliens," and "Tombstone" once again refused the hero's role. Big D takes a crash course in Biblical interpretation. Gene begs for a remake. And Ash cringes at the Hall of Souls. Oliver Stone gave the '80s and '90s some of their greatest films, so it's about time Shat The Movie dove into his catalog. And what better introductory film than "Platoon," a movie that combined Stone's artistry and military experience in a brilliant reflection on the Vietnam War. In this episode, Big D and Ash review the movie and the war through personal tales and family history. Gene digs into the social and racial aspects of the conflict, and the Shat Crew celebrates a knockout cast at its best. Summer vacations, cabin trips, lakeside living, nature walks, and spending time with family are enough to make the most cynical Shat The Movies listener nostalgic. On this Fathers Day recording, we visit John Candy's "The Great Outdoors," a classic '80s comedy that holds a dear place in many a heart. Brothers Adam, Josh, and John R. commissioned "The Great Outdoors" in honor of their late father and the childhood memories they built with him. Big D related to being a dad. Ash contrasted the idyllic mood of the movie with her own childhood vacations. And Gene was taken back to his summer fantasies of meeting a mean girl in a denim jacket. Of course, the Shat Crew also covers The 96er, the endless animal gags, Dan Aykroyd's oddly enjoyable performance, and bear dumps. But the real meat of this movie is laughing at jokes and situations that work BECAUSE we've seen them—and lived them— so many times. "Back to the Future Part III" is a master class in how to make a time-travel comedy. It's a love letter to Old Hollywood Westerns. And it's the final note in a legendary trilogy. Guest host Kevin Brackett (Reel Spoilers podcast) joins Ash and Gene this week to discuss the countless callbacks, outstanding action, and brilliant performances that elevated what some consider the weakest of the Back to the Future series. We get into Christopher Lloyd's puppy-dog brown eyes, the Back to the Future theme park ride, elaborate dioramas, the movie's "Gilligan's Island" tendencies, Gene's Two-DeLorean Conundrum, and a hotly debated ending that involves a small child pointing at his genitals. Before Tom Sizemore and Mickey Rourke made flops of their careers, they starred in one of the most epic box office failures of the '90s: "Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man." Was the world just not ready for an action comedy that played out like a comic book, or is this movie truly rushed and sloppy? The Shat Crew was fully divided on this forgotten film, but not in the ways you might expect. A few things we did agree on: Don Johnson is a charming S.O.B., Harley-Davidsons are garbage motorcycles, Daniel Baldwin was cheated by the gene pool, and sometimes you need to just let a movie end. Listener Lachlan H. commissioned this cinematic collection of life advice from all the way down in Australia, reminding us "it's better to be dead and cool than alive and uncool." Before there was "Scream" or "Scary Movie, a little movie called "Student Bodies" pioneered the slasher-film spoof. But was it too far ahead of its time, with too few movies to parody? In Dick Ebert's estimation, "two out of eight jokes" are funny in this 1981 trailblazer that made him laugh as a boy. Gene and Ash think that's generous as the Shat Crew discusses The Breather, jokes about the differently abled, and the magic of Malvert. Film commissioner Dan in Park Ridge, IL, makes Shat history with this episode, and we discover the racially charged background of the eggplant. Most '80s and '90s cop movies are cheesy, unfunny, offensive, unintelligent, or a combination of the four. But 1990's "Internal Affairs" joins "L.A. Confidential" as a rare police drama that delivers on quality and thrills. Sporting the worst haircuts of their careers, Andy Garcia and Richard Gere spent two hours trading lethal glares, filthy innuendo, mind games, and silky fabrics. Of course, "Internal Affairs" had the typical '90s slow-mo shots and hideous sets, but all that was balanced by a buffet of beautiful butts and some forward-thinking filmmaking. Care to guess the wipe score before listening? We think you'll be surprised. An '80s movie doesn't have to be the funniest, the most dramatic, or the most action-packed film we've ever seen to be important. It doesn't even need to be popular. Sometimes, a movie just needs to bring families together, give us a few chuckles, and bridge the gap between the young mind of a child and the memories of a parent. "Johnny Dangerously" isn't Michael Keaton's best-known film. And it isn't the pinnacle of Amy Heckerling's skills as a director. But it's definitely worth watching. In the edition, the Shat Crew discusses premarital sex, running gags, eyeliner, John Stamos versus Christian Slater, "Gung Ho" versus "Mr. Mom," and whether crime actually pays. Some say Paul Newman is the greatest actor of all time. Some say Martin Scorsese is the greatest director of all time. And some say "The Color of Money" is his greatest film. We are not those people. But the Shat Crew is mature enough to appreciate a film with sets you can smell, jaw-dropping performances, and the magic of a young Tom Cruise. In this edition, we discuss how "The Color of Money" influenced other gambling movies ("Rounders," anyone?) and brought out Dick Ebert's inner detective. Ash explores the art of the hustle, and Gene defines the line between games and sports. Throw in one of the '80s weirdest montages, an unexpected ending, and the ultimate question of money versus pride, and you'll see why this Academy Award-winning film can be both outstanding and outdated. Bust out your surfboards and Stunned Mullets, we're going "Back to The Beach" with Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello! This 1987 parody of '60s movies packed in appearances from OJ Simpson, PeeWee Herman, the casts of "Leave It to Beaver" and "Gilligan's Island," Dick Dale, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and the "two dollars" kid from "Better Off Dead." This edition of Shat The Movies explores the importance of following through on threats, deal breakers in dating, Big D's mall walking, and East Coast vs West Coast beaches. Ash and Big D crush Gene's ideas on parenthood while revealing a fear of losing their identities as they age. Dick body-shames beachgoers and Gene explains why you should seek a partner you fear. We owe you an apology. In more than 200 movies, Shat The Movies somehow neglected to select a film starring Adam Sandler. Listener Steve W. decided to make things right by commissioning the 1996 golf comedy classic "Happy Gilmore." Hot on the heels of "Billy Madison," this cameo-filled gut-buster hit the ground running without wasting a minute, made us question what it means to be a winner, championed the everyman, and was endlessly quotable. Who doesn't love to hate Shooter McGavin? Who doesn't love to love Chubbs? And who ever expected to see Bob Barker kick the crap out of the hero? "Happy Gilmore" was full of surprises in an era when we thought we'd seen it all. It took a boring game and made it exciting. And it taught each of us to find our happy place. The '80s gave us two major movies about shrinkage: "Honey, I Shrunk The Kids" and "Innerspace." The former was a wholesome, heartwarming, at times tragic tale of a family sticking together to survive. The latter—a sci-fi jumble of sexy Dennis Quaid, overly complicated tech, annoying Martin Short, and for some reason, a rabbit— is what we're reviewing today. "Innerspace" mixed impressive visual effects that gave us all warm fuzzies as we recalled our days at the science museum. And the chemistry between Short and Quaid led to some feel-good moments. But when Quaid was in Meg Ryan's body after being in her body, then saw his own overly developed child in her womb ... man, what the fuck? You probably haven't seen this movie. You probably won't see this movie. But we did. And we're here to tell you all about it. Long ago, Roger and Gene begged Shat Nation to commission one of their all-time favorite '90s comedies: "Dirty Work." Heeding the call, listener Jack stepped up and demanded Norm Macdonald have his day in the sun. Today is that day. But things have turned dark for ol' Norm since his one big shot back in 1998. The world has changed. Humor has changed. Artie Lange's nose has changed. Can a movie filled with gay jokes, hooker jokes, jail rape jokes, and hidden-fish jokes still make us laugh? Surprisingly, yes—but with some caveats. In this Dirty edition of Shat The Movies, Big D revisits the time he spliced porn into "Speed," Ash longs for Adam Sandler, and the crew discover the real reason Gene rescues animals. Plus, Gene's hit job on frats and sororities backfires, and Big D's everyman roots ruin the Wipe Score. Alright, alright, alright — it's time for the movie that put Matthew McConaughey on the map, turned Ben Affleck into a bully, and taught us all to sizzle like bacon. "Dazed and Confused" gave us a '90s indie movie look at 1976 with a drop-dead-gorgeous cast, hot muscle cars, and one-liners that made their way into all of our lives. This episode taught the Shat Crew a lot about ass-paddlings, high school sororities, and Texas sports culture. And it reminded us of magical keggers, the older kids who helped us fit in, and what it was like to stay up all night with what felt like an eternity of life ahead of you. Enough with the comedies! Let’s get back to naval warfare, the threat of nuclear annihilation, and a time when Jack Ryan was played by a young Alec Baldwin. It’s time to dive deep into the Shatty Sea for the Sean Connery masterpiece "The Hunt for Red October." Dramas tend to age horribly, but there’s something special about this Cold War mix of politics, personal vendettas, epic music, minimalist set designs, and absurdly agile submarines. Plus, any war movie that keeps Ash’s attention, subdues Gene’s cynicism and doesn’t force Big D to read subtitles is a winner in our book. “Come on Big D, fly!” SUBSCRIBE & FOLLOW Android: http://shatthemovies.com/android Apple/iTunes: http://shatthemovies.com/itunes Social Media: Twitch, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Snapchat Website: http://shatthemovies.com/ HELP SUPPORT THE PODCAST Donate with Paypal: http://shatthemovies.com/paypal Donate With Venmo: https://venmo.com/shatpodcasts Get Podcast Merchandise: http://shatthemovies.com/shop Shop Amazon With Our Affiliate Link: https://www.amazon.com/?tag=shatmovies-20 Sponsor's Listener Survey: http://shatthemovies.com/survey Leave an iTunes Review: http://shatthemovies.com/review Vote for our Next Movies: http://shatthemovies.com/vote Feeds & Social Media: http://shatthemovies.com/subscribe-and-follow Leave a Voicemail: (914) 719-SHAT - (914) 719-7428 Email: hosts@shatthemovies.com Listen to our TV Podcasts: https://shatontv.com/shat-on-podcasts Theme Song - Die Hard by Guyz Nite: https://www.facebook.com/guyznite

When listener James commissioned "The Cannonball Run," we had no idea it would be the podcast episode that launched a dozen new Shat The Movies catchphrases: Boobtastic, Optibra, Gene Lyons Nest Thermostat. This ensemble road-race movie had one goal in mind: laughs. And it delivered like a 100 mph Hollywood Squares orgy. In the end, Ash drooled for Burt Reynolds, Gene was reminded of his uncle's rich scent, and Big D valiantly attempted to explain the Captain USA joke. When it comes to your 200th movie, you can't just go with any old motion picture. You need something mid-80s with a time-traveling teen, a cool car, a wacky scientist, dangerous enemies, and an awkward romance. That's why Shat The Movies is proud to celebrate its bicentennial with everyone's favorite 1985 time machine movie: "My Science Project." The shat flies fast and furious as we talk about overused nerd tropes, a psychotic Dennis Hopper, adolescent terrorism, T-Rex abuse, and abysmal costuming. When Fisher Stevens is the highlight of your movie and even Big D can't get into the sci-fi fun, you know there's trouble. What happens when the dad of the podcast is confronted with the rebellious teen of '90s coming-of-age movies? Will Big D spank "Empire Records," or will this record-store comedy remind him of what it was to be a shoplifting adolescent? Listener Jen D. added to her list of sterling commissions with the movie that gave us Rex Manning Day, scandalous miniskirts, horrible dancing, and a soundtrack that included Better Than Ezra, Cracker, and The Gin Blossoms. The romances and struggles took Ash back to her wild years and made Gene resurrect his inner music snob. Find out about that thing on AJ's lip, why Corey panicked over a blowjob, and why Big D hates Lucas so much. Oh, and there's some Harry Styles in there for good measure. This episode is cursed. You've been warned. It killed Ash's Internet access, froze all of Texas, put Big D in the hospital, and aged Gene another 40 years. Do you really want to risk it all to hear The Shat Crew talk about Kirk Douglas' cool, Martin Sheen's hair, bootstrap paradox, the lethality of flare guns, Japanese fighter planes, and Navy dress standards? Understand that pressing play is a gamble. What you'll gain is questionable maritime knowledge, even more questionable escape tactics, and some listener feedback. What you might lose is your mind. Years of Shat The Movies debate were finally settled this week when Ash, Big D, and Gene carefully studied the Jamie Lee Curtis striptease in "True Lies." The song playing in the background wasn't "Leave Your Hat On" or "Cream." Ash was right: It's "Alone in the Dark." This Arnold Schwarzenegger and James Cameron team-up was the first movie with a $100 million budget, reinvigorated Tom Arnold's career, and might be Bill Paxton's greatest role. The Shat Crew discusses shitty husbands, nuclear fallout, terrorist tactics, when to deliver the punchline, and the unforgettable Crimson Jihad. Boobs. "Species" is a movie about boobs: great boobs, alien boobs, killer boobs, gooey boobs. But the 1995 movie that introduced the world to Natasha Henstridge is so much more. It made Ash and Big D sympathize with a killer alien. It made Michael Madsen try to be an action star. And it turned Gene Lyons into a sci-fi lawyer. In this edition, we put on our lab coats and dissect the mating habits and menstrual discharge of human hybrids, debate whether inviting a lady to shower is polite or perverted, applaud terrific police work, question laboratory protocols, evaluate the sex appeal of Alfred Molina, and utterly shatter Dick Ebert's optimistic view of the film's end scene. We all remember Christina Applegate as the ditzy Kelly Bundy from TV's "Married with Children," but people often forget she did '90s movies, too. Before starring in "Anchorman" and "Bad Moms," a young Applegate went dark and quirky with "Don't Tell Mom The Babysitter's Dead." Commissioner Brad N. told the Shat Crew to do its worst on this comedy, not knowing it was an Ash Schlafly favorite and just wild enough to entertain Gene. The big question: What will Big D say? There's a lot to love with this teen movie, including Bernie Sanders as a babysitter, damaged kids, horrible parenting, Scientology jokes, an adorable romance, and sexy villains. Yes, that is David Duchovny. Ash makes the case that Josh Charles is hot; Gene mourns the loss of another great stoner; and Big D gives us a lecture on responsibility and respect for the dead. Ash makes Shat The Movies history as we motorboat our way through a star-studded film with the coolest movie poster of 1988: "Tequila Sunrise." This is a serious movie with serious cops who seriously love peanuts and throwing coffee while sleeping with witnesses and chatting on gigantic walkie-talkies. We've got saxophones, sunsets, swing sets, and more twists than a bowl of Olive Garden spaghetti. In this episode commissioned by listener Rachel C., Gene decodes the noises old Iranian uncles make. Big D can't decide if the film is stupid or he is, and Ash puts on her scuba suit to explore underwater hot tub sex. When we think of the best '90s horror movies, we think of "It," "Event Horizon," "Jacob's Ladder," and "Scream." Nobody ever brings up "The Silence of the Lambs." Maybe they're too scared. This cinematic gamechanger introduced us to the terror Anthony Hopkins could unleash and reminded us just how sharp Jodie Foster's jawline really is. In this brothers' birthday gift to listener Jon R., The Shat Crew settles life-or-death questions, including: Why make a skin dress when a "skin vagina" will do? Who approved these action sequences? How did Buffalo Bill kills so many women when he's so bad at killing? Why is society so interested in how people were killed, rather than why? And what was with the anagrams? Shat The Movies is no stranger to Nicolas Cage movies and teen movies; it was only a matter of time before the two collided in the '80s classic "Valley Girl," a film that stoked our loins and crushed our hopes. It's something like "Romeo and Juliet"—in that both scripts have characters and things happen—but calling Randy and Julie star-crossed lovers is a stretch. "Valley Girl" feels more like a mix of "Grease" and "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" (another Nic Cage flick), with some painful lingo to spice things up. Gene was utterly confounded, asking: Do girls really check out boys en masse? Why didn't hippies turn into cool '80s parents? Why do all the characters look the same age? And is Randy a stalker? Ash set the record straight by letting us know girls don't dance around in their underwear at sleepovers, radio dedications are romantic, New Orleans parents are super chill, and Nic Cage is a good kisser. And Big D was the biggest fan of all: excited by the seedy side of Hollywood, cheering for the live music acts, and longing to live in a body small enough for car sex. On paper, "Boogie Nights" looks destined to fail: A new, 27-year-old director Paul Thomas Anderson gambling on making a period drama about porn ... starring Marky Mark and Burt Reynolds ... based on a short film about a guy named "Dirk Diggler" that Anderson made when he was 18. But instead of a campy tits-and-ass disco disaster, "Boogie Nights" turned out to be a breakout film powered by picture-perfect camerawork, a mind-blowing soundtrack, a swirl of emotions, and a dynamite cast including Philip Seymour Hoffman, Julianne Moore, Heather Graham, William H. Macy, John C. Reilly, and Don Cheadle. Seriously, all those people were in one movie that featured a prosthetic dong, crappy kung fu, and bell bottoms. Ash, Dick, and Gene naturally swooned over this masterpiece of '90s cinema, which brought up conversations about vintage porn, the darkness of the '80s, drug PSAs, Thomas Jayne, and of course that time Ash commissioned Shat the Movies to cover "Magnolia." Canadian listeners Denis and Jillian commissioned this year's Shat Christmas comedy, "Trading Places," explaining that it's been their holiday comfort movie for years. Upon viewing, we're not sure it's a Christmas movie, or a comedy, or particularly comforting. But Trading Places made some bold social statements, helped elevate Eddie Murphy to one of the hottest names in Hollywood and got Jamie Lee Curtis topless. Join the Shat Crew on this holiday romp as we discuss power suits, the difference between "True Lies" and "The Full Monty," frozen orange juice concentrate, stolen valor, and the horrible disguises of '80s cinema. Most Shat films can only hope to be as funny now as the day they were released. "Office Space" might actually have gotten funnier over the years. That's probably because we're grown-ups now and can relate to commuting, quitting a job, getting laid off, and regurgitating corporate buzzwords. In this episode, commissioned by listener Don Sauce, you'll hear career advice from Gene Lyons, music advice from Ash, and why Big D will never leave his job. The Shat Crew also covers toxic positivity, Gene's workplace tantrums, Ash's fear of Y2K, past lovers, and the surprising role Jennifer Aniston played in getting "Office Space" made. "The Transformers: The Movie" put us in a very strange position. Should we view the movie as children of the '80s, as adults in a 2020 pandemic, or through the eyes of Gen Z? And that led to more questions: Why do Autobots turn into cars at the worst times? Is something creepy going on with Rodimus Prime and Daniel? Is Spike the worst dad in the galaxy? Sometimes, a movie is just meant to be fun and sell toys. Sense of scale doesn't matter. Storylines are secondary, and the deaths of beloved characters just lead to really detailed dance scenes. "The Transformers: The Movie" had everything: a puckering space butthole, dozens of named characters that basically looked the same, a kick-ass butt-rock soundtrack, Orson Welles, Leonard Nemoy, Judd Nelson, Frank Welker, Robert Stack, Scatman Crothers, and the Micro Machines Man. As the theme song goes, this one was more than meets the eye. Here at Shat The Movies, we pride ourselves on seeing beyond nostalgia, beyond our personal memories, and really asking ourselves, "Does this '80s movie actually hold up?" That solemn task has never been harder than when Big D and Gene were forced to stare their own childhoods in the eye, tip their sombreros, and honestly dig into "Three Amigos." With Ash asking, "What is this movie?" and Randy Newman in the writing credits, there were moments Dick and Gene had their doubts: Is Chevy Chase capable of being funny? Was Martin Short the right choice for Ned Nederlander? Is this comedy good or just memorable? "No!" Big D bravely shouted. "This is a classic movie of sight gags, of talented actors, and ... rich backstories?" Listen as the Shat Crew wonders who B.J. Novak is, ponders whether Galaxy Quest was funnier, guesses how Billy The Kid would fare in Santo Poco, and spills a little tea in the mix.
