Today's guest is Somya Agrawal, Leader, Collaborator and Motivator. I had the joy of meeting Somya in June 2024, when she joined us for a Walking Partnerships day in Surrey, in the UK.Somya offers valuable insights into: Being the conductor and not the trumpet player - The difficult transition between manager and leader, how the role changes and the importance of building a high-functioning team. The ripple effect - leading by example - The importance of watching and learning from leaders around you and how we are always being watched, even when we think nobody is watching! Dare to enter the arena - How we foster a culture of openness, transparency, honesty and collaboration. Ask questions and challenge with kindness and curiosity. It is not what you say, but how you say that it matters. We discuss the People, Places, and Experiences that have shaped Somya and made her the person and leader she is today: People - "My parents, sisters and my tribe" Places - "Around the world. My family's travelling style and how it reinforced the importance of teamwork"Experiences - "The loss of my father and climbing Mount Kilimanjaro"Somya's key encouragements to Leaders: ENGAGE - establish a rapport with your team and build trust which will allow you to be your authentic self. With passion for your purpose, you will be able to identify the best people for the job.ENABLE - use your energy to have an impact on those around you to bring people to the table who also understand your vision, as nothing is done without collaboration.EMPOWER - by engaging with energy and by enabling with empathy, you will lead a team that feels empowered. It's not about the destination, it's about the journey. So remember to enjoy it and take your team with you.Connect with Somya:LinkedIn - Somya AgrawalAbout Somya Agrawal:Somya's most recent leadership post as a Senior Civil Servant was as a Deputy Director for Product and Delivery at UK Health Security Agency. She became a DD after a very busy and demanding period as Product Introduction Lead during the COVID-19 pandemic where she was responsible for the design, development and launch of the COVID-19 lateral flow devices. Over 2.5bn LFDs were deployed during that time, so as you can imagine, it was a very high-profile and complex mission with a lot of ambiguity, unknowns and political sensitivities in play. However, Somya loved every second of it, because of the self-development it gave her but also the HUGE national impact that this job had.Prior to being a Senior Civil Servant, she worked at the Royal Marsden Hospital, a specialist Cancer Hospital in London, where she believes her passion for positive outcomes in healthcare really came from, as during her stint there in Research and Clinical trials, she saw many oncology drugs become licensed after seeing patients not only surviving but thriving when given the right care and treatment.Somya is one of 3 girls in her family (the middle one) who have been very fortunate to have been raised by parents who provided their daughters as much as they could within their means which did not come without sacrifices and we are all incredibly grateful for our childhoods and it making us who we are today. Though not yet married, she has a 6 year old niece who she absolutely dotes on and calls one of her best friends.Somya is incredibly passionate about positive outcomes in healthcare and states that her stakeholder engagement skills and energetic personality have now become her USP that have contributed to the successes she has had in her leadership journey so far.

“Could AI ever be a common pool of resources?”Researcher Somya Joshi makes a compelling observation: the same extractive narratives of 19th century industrialisation are being reproduced today in our venture to conquer the AI ecosystem. Somya highlights how major technological shifts such as the Green Revolution relied on the premise that automation would always lead to progress, and the myth around this pattern persists in the case of AI.Somya reminds us that following the major revolutions seen in history, power eventually remained in the hands of the elites. In parallel, other authors have discussed the “unequal geographies and distributive effects” in the extraction and manufacturing stages involved with progress and technology. The footprint of labour has traditionally been made invisible in the process, and the same now applies to the footprint of materials such as water, copper and silicon, mainly sourced in the Global South. Somya calls for the normative act of imagining equity to ensure a sustainable and more just future by seeing AI as a common resource for global use.

In this conversation we talked about what can be done to avoid injuries, what can be done once injured and what protocols need to be followed to safely return to sport. As a runner who got injured training for his first marathon and became a cyclist, I make fun of runners and their injuries. But, injuries are part and parcel of all sports including cycling. How do you avoid injuries, how do you take care of them once you get injured and how you safely get back to the sport you love is something we all need to understand. That is why it was really fascinating to hear what all goes into prehab, rehab and return to sport from someone who is an expert in the field. Litigators who do other things besides litigate -- you know them. Some perform comedy, act on stage or in film, or they are gifted musicians. Some are even drummers. (Drummer joke, if that's not too edgy.) One highly acclaimed San Francisco class action litigator is talented on the kit and owns her own drum company. Another Los Angeles-based litigator started his own record label. Another San Francisco litigator left the profession, moved to South Africa, and led people on safari. Others write books, or develop technology solutions to common problems. Still others launch businesses, teach, and back causes. The point is: Litigators do many things. One job closer to home is when he or she moves from private practice to a corporate legal department. But what about when the company is on the smaller size, with a modest legal department whose members are expected to handle an assortment of matters? Hiring is an important decision for any company, but when it's a smaller organization selecting in-house counsel is arguably even more critical. When companies like this aren't engaged in litigation, one might think a litigator wouldn't be the first choice. In this episode we talk about all the things one litigator has done, and the advantages she feels a litigator can bring to a small company – one that isn't embroiled in litigation and would like to keep it that way. She is Somya Kaushik, in-house counsel, entrepreneur, adjunct law professor, writer, leader, a children's book author (“You, YES You! Yolki's Journey Within," illustrated by Annie Hagy* and available on Amazon and other fine platforms), and a former litigator. She is senior corporate counsel for Mineral, an HR and corporate compliance company which was recently acquired by Miratech, a tech solutions company for legal, HR, and governance, risk and compliance. Before Mineral she was an intellectual property litigator representing large and small companies, including SaaS and tech firms. In 2013 she founded EsqMe, Inc., a sharing platform where lawyers can exchange legal documents, templates, motions, and forms, where she served as general counsel. She is also an adjunct professor at Lewis & Clark Law School. Now located in Chicago, for nearly five years Somya was president of the South Asian Bar Association of Oregon. Somya is on the Fastcase 50 list honoring innovators and leaders in the legal industry. Education: New York Law School, J.D.; George Washington University, B.A., Psychology and Political Science; London School of Economics; and Harvard Business School. *Ms. Hagy is the younger daughter of the host of this podcast, which, now that I think about it, could use some illustrations to brighten up the place. ********This podcast is the audio companion to the Journal of Emerging Issues in Litigation. The ability to do business here and connect with folks on a personal level, as well as just on an accessibility level, has been great. I think that tied with the entire Fuel team—they've made great connections and gone to bat for us, and the programming is great, and the people are great. It's been a good experience for me.” - Keith Fix, (30:31)“It's the ecosystem that makes Fuel very unique. The curriculum is one part of it, but the ecosystem around it—the people who are delivering the courses or the mentors that have been put around the program or the general networking events that have been established so that startups who come here get the ability to go out, mingle with these people and build their own authentic, genuine one-on-one relationships—that is just amazing. I haven't seen that kind of effort in any other program that we've been a part of.” - Kannan Udayarajan, (44:41)

FMCG brands typically lack real insight and data on their customers. Having traditionally sold their product via retailers and market places they have relied on mass marketing and retailer customers to do this for them. As we move into a world where consumers want more relevant and engaging relationships with brands, FMCG brands not only have an opportunity to step into this space but understand their audience better. With social media is a logical step for brands to do this, Somya and Lynsey chat through the challenges, opportunities, examples, and how to utilise social media advertising to help overcome this challenge.

Hi! Welcome to another episode of the Work With It podcast! On this episode, I interview my good friend Somya Parkash and learn more about how she transformed her lifestyle to a more happy and healthier one. We discuss how the shock of her diagnosis at a young age was the turning point she needed to motivate her to seek a healthier way of living. Along with talking about ways someone can change their current lifestyle, Somya and I also examine the common misconceptions people have about "being healthy." Lastly, we analyze Somya's inspiration and take a look at the people she follows on social media that motivate her on a daily basis. Our lives are filled with defining moments. Tragedy shakes us, suffering changes us, but it’s how we take tragedy, and how we learn from suffering that determines the next phase or trajectory of our lives. We can choose to use that suffering as an excuse, and become bitter, and disheartened, and withdraw from the world, or we can use it to grow. We can use it to make ourselves better, to make others better, to leave our communities and families better than we found them. My guest today, at the age of 26, nearly died from someone trying to kill her. She could’ve used that experience and let it defeat her, but instead she used it as fuel to impact the next generation for good. A CULTURE OF COMPETITIVENESS Somya and Molly dive right in and discuss how our current culture is one of competitiveness. They discuss various events in history, politics, and religion which have contributed to the society we live in now, one that starts even at the very bottom, educating our children through an elitist system, to the very top, displaying competitiveness in governments around the globe. BREAKING THE CYCLE Molly shares how even on her visit to a local restaurant, she always makes a point to acknowledge and get to know every person she comes in contact with. The two discuss how the simple act of being kind, having conversations (even the awkward ones), can lead to change. Somya share her belief that all human beings just want to be seen, and understood, and if we can all work together to address and relieve each others fears, the world could be headed for a much brighter future. IMPACTING THE NEXT GENERATION Somya’s life passion is education children in a way that will change the world. Her many initiatives surrounding youth education are structured to disrupt the current education system, by providing new research, and facts countercultural to what most children are reading in their history books. Her dream is to see children achieve the same level and quality education no matter where they are born, or what economic bracket they fall under. Influencing what and how children learn from a young age has the power to change our economy, our ecosystem, our society, and the world.
