3,200 Xbox jobs. Studios sold, studios cut loose, studios just gone. And PlayStation is telling us physical discs will be done by 2028. I sat down this week and gave you my honest, unfiltered take on all of it — not just the business moves, but what this means for the actual human beings living through this. As somebody who is currently laid off himself, this one hits close to home, and I'm not going to pretend otherwise. This episode covers:-

Dr Xavier Ho from Monash University returns to Bargain Bin Gaymers, and it's Yap Week at the Bulldog — three gaymers squeezed onto one couch, one associate producer named May, and enough industry talk to power a small game studio.Davey, Mitch and Xavier get into the news that's actually mattering right now: Microsoft cutting 3,200 Xbox jobs and spinning off Compulsion Games, Double Fine, Ninja Theory and Undead Labs. A seismic shift at Microsoft leads this week's GameBurst podcast, as newly appointed Xbox chief executive Asha Sharma executes a sweeping corporate restructure. The dramatic overhaul will see 3,200 layoffs, alongside a rare strategic reversal that allows celebrated studios Double Fine and Compulsion Games to regain their independence. Meanwhile, Ninja Theory and Undead Labs face new ownership, and Arkane enters a formal consultation period. Beyond the corporate fallout, we dive into Nintendo's quiet, EU-mandated redesign of the Switch Joy-Cons to feature user-replaceable batteries, and discuss a licensing snag that abruptly pulled Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2 from July's Game Pass lineup. #gameburst In our Picks of the Week, the team explores a eclectic mix of tabletop and digital media. Gary takes us on a historical transit journey with 1840 Vienna Tramways and reviews the Aftergame.app platform, while Jerome highlights narrative adventures in The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales and the competitive martial arts of Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game. Jerome also shares an insightful video essay examining why curiosity ultimately triumphs over raw talent, drawing comparisons between the acclaimed series Frieren and The Apothecary Diaries. We're more than a week removed from the controversial decision to scrap new physical releases for PlayStation hardware beginning in early 2028, and even with a robust outpouring of rage from a portion of its hardcore audience, Sony doesn't seem like it's going to budge. This has come to surprise some people; yet, the longer Sony continues its silence on the topic, the more unlikely it'll be that anything will change. Will the Japanese megacorporation's wait-and-see approach pay off? Is there still time to turn the ship around? Are physical buyers vastly overestimating their power and positioning? There's much more to discuss surrounding the worst period of PR for the PlayStation brand since 2011. Other news this week includes furor over language in the European PSN's terms of service, drama surrounding Marvel Tokon's release on Steam, significant layoffs at Xbox that deeply affect PlayStation-aligned developers like id and Obsidian, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! Is it weird that Sony executives sold more than $10 million in stock after their infamous physical games announcement? What's going on with EA's insane monetization policies in College Football 27? Why couldn't Bluepoint spin-out from Sony like Microsoft is allowing some of its teams to do? Does Dustin have similarly arcane powers as Brad, just pointed in the opposite direction? This week, **30nstillgaming** and **Sgt Mclusky** dive into some of the biggest stories shaping the gaming industry. and the rant along the way. In Generation X Gaming Podcast Episode #496, 30nstillgaming and Sgt Mclusky break down the latest major shifts happening at Sony and Xbox, while discussing why the gaming industry increasingly feels driven by corporate priorities instead of player experience. We start by discussing reports that Sony may stop producing physical game discs by 2028, and what that could mean for ownership, preservation, regional access, and the growing push toward digital and subscription-based gaming. The conversation also touches on recent restrictions affecting players in certain countries and why many gamers are concerned about losing control over the products they buy.The discussion then shifts to Xbox, where we react to Asha Sharma's reported company-wide reset, significant layoffs, and ongoing restructuring. We talk about the challenge of managing massive gaming organizations, the problem of excessive management layers, and the lack of accountability when projects fail. Studios like Compulsion Games, Double Fine, Ninja Theory, and Undead Labs are also discussed as part of the broader Xbox conversation.Throughout the episode, we share our frustrations with the increasingly corporate direction of gaming, where subscription revenue, guaranteed returns, and safe business decisions can often overshadow the creation of innovative, fun, and memorable games. We also talk about what we've been playing lately, including Grand Theft Auto V and Marvel Rivals, give brief thoughts on recent movie releases, and finish the show with a community Q&A about Xbox's future, studio acquisitions, and the overall direction of the industry.#podcast #gaming #podcasting ⏱️ Chapters00:00 Intro

Join Here: https://ow.ly/msoH50WCu0K In this segment of Notorious Mass Effect, Analytic Dreamz delivers a detailed breakdown of Microsoft's historic Xbox restructuring announced July 6, 2026. Xbox is cutting approximately 3,200 jobs—20% of its workforce—through FY2027, with 1,600 immediate layoffs and another 1,600 to follow. As part of a broader 4,800-job reduction across Microsoft, new Xbox CEO Asha Sharma describes it as the most significant restructure in Xbox history.Analytic Dreamz examines the harsh realities behind the cuts: lagging Game Pass growth (30 million subscribers vs. 77 million projected), declining console sales, shrinking player engagement, exploding hardware costs driven by AI demand, and operating margins far below competitors. The segment covers major studio changes including Double Fine and Compulsion Games becoming independent, the sale of Ninja Theory and Undead Labs, Arkane Studios under strategic review, and Microsoft's sharpened focus on core franchises like Call of Duty, Minecraft, Halo, Gears of War, Forza, and Fallout. Analytic Dreamz also explores new leadership under COO Helen Chiang, management streamlining, and what this reset means for Xbox's future. In today's Daily Fix:Xbox boss Asha Sharma sent an email to employees announcing a 'significant' restructuring of the company, citing losing "64 cents for every dollar invested" in their studios in an average year. Unfortunately 3,200 employees will be laid off, starting with 1,600 today and the rest to happen throughout Fiscal year 2027. Microsoft-owned studioss Double Fine and Compulsion Games will become independent studios, while others such as Ninja Theory and Undead Labs "have entered terms to join new ownership." Arkane Studios' management will enter into consultation with its workers council on next steps. No publicly-announced games are said to be cancelled as part of the reductions in workforce. In other news, Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls has been blocked in 132 countries, likely due to Sony's PSN requirements, and PSN being blocked in specific territories. And finally, DC Studios' Supergirl has crossed $100 million at the global box office in its second week, and will likely not recoup its reported $170 million production budget (which does not include the massive marketing spend).

Xbox just got hit by a sledgehammer. In this episode of Geek Freaks Headlines, Frank breaks down CEO Asha Sharma's announcement of 3,200 job cuts at Xbox, with 1,600 happening immediately and the rest rolling out through 2027. Sharma calls it a major reset, admitting Xbox margins are 3 to 10 times lower than comparable companies. Four studios are leaving Microsoft entirely: Compulsion Games (South of Midnight) and Double Fine (Psychonauts 2) are going independent and keeping their IP, while Ninja Theory and Undead Labs head to undisclosed new owners. Frank also covers the cuts hitting Activision, Bethesda, ZeniMax, Blizzard, King, Mojang, and Xbox Game Studios, the refocus on tentpole franchises like Halo and Gears of War, and why King and Mojang now report directly to Sharma. It all lands just one year after Microsoft cut 9,000 jobs and cancelled Rare's Everwild.Timestamps:00:00 Xbox announces 3,200 layoffs and a company reset00:17 Four studios leaving: Compulsion, Double Fine, Ninja Theory, Undead Labs00:36 Cuts across Activision, Bethesda, Blizzard, King, Mojang, and more00:57 King and Mojang now report directly to Asha Sharma01:11 One year after 9,000 layoffs and the Everwild cancellationKey Takeaways:Xbox is cutting 3,200 jobs total, with 1,600 eliminated immediately and the rest through 2027.CEO Asha Sharma says Xbox margins are 3 to 10 times lower than comparable companies.Compulsion Games and Double Fine are transitioning back to independent studios and keeping their IP.Ninja Theory and Undead Labs have entered terms with new, undisclosed owners. No recently announced first party games are being cancelled, and Xbox is refocusing on beloved franchises like Halo and Gears of War.King (Candy Crush) and Mojang (Minecraft) will now report directly to Sharma, showing how vital those tentpoles are. This follows last year's 9,000 layoffs and the cancellation of Rare's Everwild.Memorable Quotes:"Xbox just got hit by a sledgehammer.""Compulsion Games, the team behind South of Midnight, which is a beautiful game, and Double Fine, the team behind Psychonauts 2, are going to transition back into independent companies.""There's a lot of people out there looking for jobs in a very competitive market that's being threatened by AI."Call to Action:If you want to stay on top of the biggest stories in gaming and geek culture, subscribe to Geek Freaks Headlines wherever you get your podcasts. Then we get into a rough week for Xbox: Call of Duty leaving day-one Game Pass, major Xbox Series X|S price increases, and reports that Microsoft may be looking to sell, spin out, or shut down studios like Ninja Theory, Double Fine, Undead Labs, Compulsion, and Arkane Lyon.
