To save energy and to efficiently use resources, we often need to monitor and to sense, we need to communicate and to process data. To make this possible the Internet of Things promises the realisation of dense sensor networks. But sensors consume energy and cannot always be wired for power. In the EU project LoLiPoP-IoT, 38 partners from across Europe develop Energy Harvesting and micro-power management solutions for Wireless IoT edge devices that enable long battery life sensors to be retrofitted on, in or near equipment and infrastructure. Wireless sensors are the key technology platform to enable us to collect data that will be used for anomaly detection, efficiency and performance monitoring. LoLiPoP IoT creates an ecosystem of developers, integrators and users to develop these platforms thinking about power/battery life, ease of installation and maintenance. The project is driven by 12 laboratory- and field-based use cases to initially demonstrate their technical viability and then potential impact. This week's EYE ON NPI is enjoying the beautiful weather with you, whether sitting in the sun or lounging in the shade - all's good because we've got Nexperia's NEH2000BY Energy Harvesting Power Management IC with embedded solar MPPT capability! (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/n/nexperia/neh2000by-energy-harvesting-power-management-ic) This tiny, low-cost chip is a one-stop solution for extending the life of your product by making it powered by small solar cells. This chip is perfect for wearables or miniature sensor nodes, maybe with a LoRa radio, WiFi or Bluetooth Low Energy where space and pricing is important. For example, an asset tracker, traffic monitor, activity watch, or agricultural sensor network: stuff that is outside anyways so it'll be designed for outdoor use and have lots of sun exposure. We've covered other MPPT tracking solar harvesting chips (https://blog.adafruit.com/2021/04/23/eye-on-npi-max20361-tiny-single-multi-cell-solar-harvester-maximintegrated/), and the NEH2000BY has some advantages in size, cost and simplicity. Either use it to increase the time between charges, or use it to have your product be fully encased with no need for charging at all, thanks to the power of the SUN (https://solarsystem.nasa.gov/solar-system/sun/galleries/?page=0&per_page=25&order=created_at+desc&search=&href_query_params=category%3Dsolar-system_sun&button_class=big_more_button&tags=sun&condition_1=1%3Ais_in_resource_list&category=51) The Nexperia NEH2000BY energy harvester (https://www.digikey.com/short/hpnfttw3) is designed specifically for use with solar cells because cells collapse under high current draw - which is what batteries want when they are charging up so that they can be ready to go ASAP! When drawing current from a solar cell, at the very beginning the voltage is very high, then is slowly drops down as more is drawn until the input voltage collapses completely. So you have to be very careful when drawing current - too little and you lose out on efficiency, too much and your power goes away completely. There's a 'sweet spot' right in the middle, where you can get the most power output, which is called the Max Power Point. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maximum_power_point_tracking) And this point varies with how much sunlight you get - so it isn't something you can pre-program in with a comparator or anything. Instead, the energy harvester has to wiggle the power draw forward and back to find the maximum point. For large-scale solar installations, you'd have a microcontroller do the math for you, and adjust throughout the day - it isn't hard to do MPPT it just takes measurement and computation. But in small and low-current situations, you can't spend all your power budget on a microcontroller to manage your battery charger. First up, almost no extra components are needed: just a stabilization capacitor plus a capacitor for the switched-cap boosting doubler. Note that there's no inductor because it seems to use a switched-cap boosting method for approximately 2x voltage output - so you will need to spec a panel that, when the MPPT voltage is approximately doubled, you'll have about 0.3V above the battery voltage. There's some math in the datasheet to work this out but basically in the end, use a panel with an open-circuit voltage - Voc - that is about 0.7 times the battery voltage. So, e.g. if you're using a Lipoly (https://www.digikey.com/short/h02tmj1q), with a VBat of 4.2V, use a 3V solar panel - which is very common and inexpensive. For NiMH cells, add up the total series voltage before multiplying by 0.7 for the Voc desired. To keep your battery from over-charging, either use a separate battery charger chip that will do the constant-current to voltage-limited charging, or use a low cost over-voltage protection (OVP) chip as recommended in the datasheet. If you'd like to integrate the Nexperia NEH2000BY Energy Harvesting Power Management IC (https://www.digikey.com/short/hpnfttw3) into your next solar-powered product, thank your lucky stars because DigiKey has the NEH2000BY in stock right now at a great price for immediate shipment. With the long summer days ahead, you can order today and be max-power-point'ing before the sun sets tomorrow.

The question stems from Littelfuses' release of 400PV Fuse series of photovoltaic solar fuses, which can be embedded directly into roof shingles or tiles. But with so much government meddling in the solar industry, and big energy looking to protect its existing interests, is it prudent, or even worth it, to bother with the technology? Later, the last leg of our ADLINK Technology edge AI series sees Zane Tsai, Director of the company's Platform Product Center, join Rich to discuss why the massive amounts of data being collected by intelligent systems requires an entire ecosystem. Looking forward, this edge AI ecosystem will also include 5G.Finally, despite all of the downs in 2020, Xilinx was actually up. Victor Peng, the company's CEO, attributes some of this success to big wins in AI sockets. But beyond innovations in their Adaptive Compute Acceleration Platform (ACAP) portfolio, he and his team have bet big on making their technology more accessible, and it appears to be paying off. This month's episode is all about telecommunications. The world of wireless comms has come a long way since Bell and Tainter first conceived the photophone in 1880.  Today, we are literally surrounded by radio waves and it is believed that from that first intentional radio signal we sent into space in 1974 from Arecibo, our radio echoes can be heard across the galaxy some 100 light years away. Back here on earth, the social revolution that occurred in the 1990s triggered by the development of digital wireless networks, is now part of our lives. And indeed, without such systems the last year, of isolation and lockdown, would have been even more unbearable. Today, wireless communications and our connected devices dominate our lives. But what are todays engineers working on that could possibly improve on our data-driven lives tomorrow? Helen's guests are Dr James Flint, Professor Misha Dohler and Rick Hanks. They share their thoughts on what wireless networks and communications means to them, and their anticipation of what is to come in the future.   Dr James Flint is a chartered engineer with the IET, Reader in Wireless Systems Engineering and Deputy Associate Dean of Teaching in The Wolfson School of Mechanical, Electrical and Manufacturing Engineering at Loughborough University. His research focuses on various aspects of wireless systems, and currently he is working on novel computing for sensors, the Internet of Things, and Energy Harvesting. He also has a keen interest in biomimetics, ultrasound and on converting systems found in nature into workable engineering solutions. Helen talked to James about the advances in wireless systems, and how wearable technology and biomimetics will become an everyday part of our lives. He is passionate about changing the way we interact with telecommunications and wireless systems through tactile and haptic technology, and is pioneering various novel concepts, which will become reality with 6G. Helen asked Misha to explain why he is already working on 6G, when 5G is only just being adopted, and why he coined the term the Internet of Skills. Energy harvesting is not a new concept – solar panels have been around for a long time, and even mechanical watches have had motion-capture systems to wind the mainspring since Rolex invented “Perpetual” movement. However, recent advances in circuit efficiency have made other forms of low-power energy harvesting viable, as they can use the microamps of current provided. Today one can obtain devices that harvest electrical energy using sources ranging from stray RF to beamed laser energy via fiber. One of the more interesting and novel means of energy harvesting is the quantum-tunneling-based Evercell thermal energy technology from Face. Evercell is a passive-structure, semiconductor-based system that exploits principles of quantum physics to produce a small, continuous flow of electric power in virtually any setting. We talked to Stefan Popov, the Managing Partner of QuantumDrive, the exclusive licensee for the use of Face's Evercell power cells in self-powered watches quartz watches. Evercell harvesters consume no fuel, have no moving parts, contain no toxic materials, and require no exposure to other stimuli, including motion, pressure, RF, or electromagnetic energy.

According to an arstechnica article Monday, August 24, a federal appeals court ruled that the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) can now sue a company that employs poor IT security practices. This resulted from a lawsuit that the FTC filed against the Wyndham Worldwide Corporation who suffered three breaches from 2008 to 2009. (click here to see FTC vs Wyndham) FTC Chairwoman Edith Ramierz wrote in a statement to Ars, “Today’s Third Circuit Court of Appeals decision reaffirms the FTC’s authority to hold companies accountable for failing to safeguard consumer data. Sierra Monitor’s Varun Nagaraj: A Model to Categorize IIoT Use Cases – Part 1. There is no shortage of stories and case studies about the IIoT. In aggregate, they support the assertion that the classic Buffalo Springfield song makes: “There’s something’s happening here; what it is ain’t exactly clear”. Unfortunately, the many IIoT case studies being written up throw the phrase “cloud” around like there is no tomorrow, and all the stories begin to blur together! Personally, I find it useful to have a model that helps me categorize IIoT use cases. The post ControlTalk NOW Week Ending August 30, 2015 appeared first on ControlTrends.

In this work, gold and semiconductor nanoparticles are used as building blocks for nanostructures, in which energy transfer is investigated. Nanoparticles have size-dependent controllable optical properties. Therefore, they are interesting objects to study different aspects and applications of energy transfer. Fluorescence quenching by gold nanoparticles is investigated and used to develop novel immunoassays for medically relevant molecules. The range of fluorescence quenching by gold nanoparticles is effective over longer distances than for dye molecules. The reason for this is the large absorption cross-section of gold nanoparticles and the radiative rate suppression of dyes caused by gold nanoparticles. The influence of gold nanoparticles on radiative and non-radiative rates of Cy3 and Cy3B dyes is studied here. A competitive, homogeneous immunoassay for digoxigenin and digoxin, a drug used to cure heart diseases, is developed. Dye-labeled digoxigenin is bound to the gold nanoparticles functionalized with anti-digoxigenin antibodies, quenching the dye fluorescence. Unlabeled digoxigenin partially replaces the dye-labeled digoxigenin leading to an increase of fluorescence. The assay has a limit of detection of 0.5 nM in buffer and 50 nM in serum. Time resolved spectroscopy reveals that the quenching is due to energy transfer with an efficiency of 70%. A homogeneous sandwich immunoassay for cardiac troponin T, an indicator of damage to the heart muscle, is developed. Gold nanoparticles and fluorophores are functionalized with anti-troponin T antibodies. In the presence of troponin T the nanoparticles and fluorophores form a sandwich structure, in which the dye fluorescence is quenched by a gold nanoparticle. The limit of detection of the immunoassay in buffer is 0.02 nM and 0.11 nM in serum. Energy transfer, with up to 95% efficiency, is responsible for the fluorescence quenching, as found through time resolved spectroscopy. Energy transfer is demonstrated in clusters of CdTe nanocrystals assembled using three methods. In the first method, clusters of differently-sized water soluble CdTe nanocrystals capped by negatively charged mercaptoacid stabilizers are produced through electrostatic interactions with positively charged Ca(II) cations. The two other methods employ covalent binding through dithiols and thiolated DNA as linkers between nanocrystals. Energy transfer from smaller nanocrystals to larger nanocrystals in aggregates is demonstrated by means of steady-state and time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy, paving the way for nanocrystal-based light harvesting structures in solution. Multi-shell onion-like CdSe/ZnS/CdSe/ZnS nanocrystals are presented. In these structures the CdSe core and the CdSe shell produce two emission peaks upon UV light excitation. When the emission peaks are well matched, the resulting emission appears as pure white light. The shade of the white light can be controlled by annealing the particles. Evidence for intra-nanocrystal energy transfer is presented.
