Maynooth University's (MU) has announced the launch of 25 new Faculty of Science & Engineering (FSE) ARDÚ Doctoral Scholarships, marking a major investment in the next generation of research talent and innovation. The FSE ARDÚ Doctoral Scholarships will support 25 PhD research students across three of the University's Research Beacons: Data Science and Digital Transformation, Health and Wellbeing, and Sustainability and Climate Change. The scholarships will fund cutting-edge research projects spanning areas such as health and disease, AI-driven healthcare analytics, and the molecular understanding of advanced materials. MU's FSE has a strong track record of delivering research that combines fundamental discovery with real-world impact. Across the faculty, researchers are addressing major challenges in health, sustainability, and digital transformation through collaborative research. By bringing together expertise from across disciplines, the ARDÚ programme will give doctoral research students the opportunity to work in a dynamic and supportive research environment while contributing to internationally recognised research. The programme reflects the faculty's strengths in computational and data science, advanced materials and physical sciences, and health, psychology, and human-centred research, supporting interdisciplinary approaches to complex real-world challenges. Good morning. “Do not be so open-minded that your brains fall out.” I was reminded of that quip from G. K. Chesterton last week, when I visited The Old Ferryboat Inn in Cambridgeshire, which not only claims to be the oldest pub in England (serving ale since 560AD, apparently), but also to have a resident ghost. A young woman took her life for love almost a thousand years ago and local legend has it she's haunted the place ever since, appearing each year on the anniversary of her death: the 17th March. That date also happens to be St Patrick's Day, which is perhaps not the ideal occasion for sober eyewitness testimony. But it's easy to be sceptical…. According to a recent National Folklore Survey, more than a third of people in England believe in ghosts, and many like the idea of them too. “A haunted house at the top of your street is fantastic,” said Caroline Gibson from Pontefract in Yorkshire, speaking to the BBC about a poltergeist who is currently trending on social media, after featuring on the paranormal podcast, Uncanny. The occult does not sit easily with mainstream Christianity. The Church warns against séances, spirit-hunting and attempts to conjure the dead. Yet in an age inclined to explain everything materially, Christianity insists that the world does indeed have a spiritual dimension. A problem remains, however, of how to discern between spiritual reality versus superstition — or for that matter, between good versus evil spiritual forces. “Do not be so open-minded that your brains fall out” doesn't really help us with that discernment, but Chesterton, himself a Christian, followed up with another one-liner that might be more useful. “The object of opening the mind, as of opening the mouth, is to shut it again on something solid.” That gets us closer. Open the mind, just not endlessly, to no purpose: open it up to close it again. The risk of being open-minded is that you may sometimes look foolish or naïve. But there is risk too in being so determined never to be gulled, or seemingly unscientific, that you refuse in advance the richness that comes with leading a spiritual life. Ghost stories challenge us to believe that there's more to the world than what we can understand in purely physical terms. Christianity goes further still, teaching that we ourselves are more than merely physical beings. If a haunted house in your street can be called fantastic, then why shouldn't a church be called the same – in both meanings of the word? Fantastic in the modern sense of being great, but also in the older sense of being extra-ordinary. A place for open minds to shut down on something solid.

'Saint Patrick was Bishop of Prusa, a city in Bythinia (the present-day Brusa or Bursa). Because of his Christian faith, he was brought before Julius (or Julian) the Consul, who in his attempts to persuade Patrick to worship as he himself did, declared that thanks was owed to the gods for providing the hot springs welling up from the earth for the benefit of men. Saint Patrick answered that thanks for this was owed to our Lord Jesus Christ, and explained that when He, Who is God, created the earth, He made it with both fire and water, and the fire under the earth heats the water which wells up, producing hot springs; he then explained that there is another fire, which awaits the ungodly. Because of this, he was cast into the hot springs, but it was the soldiers who cast him in, and not he, who were harmed by the hot water. After this St Patrick was beheaded with the presbyters Acacius, Menander, and Polyaenus. Most likely this was during the reign of Diocletian (284-305).' (Great Horologion)

This one is a jig.  It says so in the title but then it turns into something else  -   -  The Muneira is like the Galacian national dance... It could be scots... What country did this dance come from? You pick up all kinds of odd ideas.  Fiddle around with this Galician celtic music…"

There are three ways that we can make true change, especially with a government that is complicit in supporting the illegal actions of our president. Vote them out. Make your voice heard in November. Support small, local indie businesses. It's always good to support your local community. But most of these businesses not only need your support more than some giant corporation, but they also aren't supporting a government actively breaking laws and hurting people. Speak up. Publicly. At rallies and protests. Online. And especially by contacting your representatives. It feels futile. But it's not. Your voice matters. You also mentioned making a one - time donation. Consider propping on a bookstand turned to each day's page.In that vein – any kind of seasonal nature book is great to prop open. Like a field guide turned to a bird your kids might encounter. Make a list of short stories you'd like to discuss with your kids. Keep this on hand for times when you want a short-term literary activity — say, between longer books, or whenever life is filling up with appts/distractions/new baby/etc and you want something self-contained. A good short story immersion can span a single afternoon (but will likely stick with your kids forever).Melissa's daughter keeps a visual reading journal: she chooses a sticker to represent each book. When she finishes a book, she puts the sticker in her notebook with the date, gradually creating a page full of stickers. On the facing page, she writes details about the books.
