Season 2: Episode 10 Billy Steinberg     Welcome to Season 2, Episode 10 of Song Chronicles. Our special guest is Songwriter Hall of Fame member Billy Steinberg, who with collaborator Tom Kelly wrote many Number 1 hits including "Like a Virgin" by Madonna, "True Colors" by Cyndi Lauper, "So Emotional" by Whitney Houston, "Alone" by Heart, and "Eternal Flame" by The Bangles. The duo also co-wrote "I'll Stand By You" with Chrissie Hynde and "I Touch Myself" with Christine Amphlett and Mark McEntee of The Divinyls. Billy Steinberg and Cyndi Lauper in Finland, 1988. Billy's first hit song was "How Do I Make You," which Linda Ronstadt decided to record after hearing demos from Steinberg's band Billy Thermal. In our conversation, Billy shares how he found out Rondstadt would record the song which later reached the Billboard Top 10. Billy Thermal's unreleased 1980 album In 1981, Steinberg began a momentous collaboration with songwriter Tom Kelly, with whom he wrote many memorable hits of the 80s and 90s. Billy shares how he and Tom found their groove as co-writers and how they always tried to write to make themselves happy rather than customizing songs for potential artists. Their breakout hit was "Like A Virgin," the title track of Madonna's second album. You'll hear Billy's personal story behind the lyrics to "Like A Virgin" and what it meant for him to hear the song sung by an Italian nun, directed at God. Billy Steinberg, Tom Kelly, and Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders, 1992. Steinberg's lyrics resonate throughout the years because their themes are universal — which is different from being general or bland, as we discuss. We also talk about how the Brill Building Era inspired him to become a songwriter.   Billy has gone on to write with many other songwriters, including frequent collaborator Josh Alexander with whom he co-write "Give Your Heart a Break" by Demi Lovato and "Too Little Too Late" by Jojo. They have also written numerous songs with the artist LP, whom Steinberg calls "a female Roy Orbison." What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 26, 2021 43:00

While Under the Table and Dreaming may have been released in September 1994 as the debut studio album by the Dave Matthews Band, songwriter and guitarist David John Matthews was working as a bartender in 1990 when a friend encouraged him to get together with drummer Carter Beauford and record a demo of a few songs he had written.  Matthews also brought in saxophonist LeRoi Moore, and the trio began working on songs in 1991.  Beauford recalled the three piece band was, according to Wikipedia “Awful.  Not just kind of bad, I mean heinously bad...Sometimes it amazes me that we ever had a second rehearsal.”  Fortunately, they did have more rehearsals, as Matthews brought in Stefan Lessard on bass, Peter Griesar as keyboardist (he would leave the band just before the big breakout), and violinist Boyd Tinsley (in 1992).The Dave Matthews Band built a following similar to the Grateful Dead through constant touring in the 1990's.  They were famous for constantly changing their setlist and song arrangement so that no two concerts were the same, they also encouraged fans to record their performances, another similarity to the Grateful Dead.  Armed with a solid following in Virginia and a live EP called “Recently” recorded earier in 1994, the DMB would enter the studio with famed producer Steve Lillywhite to produce this certified 6x Platinum album. There has never really been a time when the Dave Matthews Band hasn't been popular since this debut.  When they released their album “Come Tomorrow” in 2018, it debuted at number 1 on the Billboard 200, making DMB the first band to have seven consecutive studio albums debut at the peak. This is a great album, and we know you will enjoy downloading it for your collectionAnts MarchingThis is the second single released, and it reached #18 on the Billboard Alternative chart.  It was written back in 1991 about people who live very settled lives, doing the same thing over and over - like ants marching.  The album title comes from this song, “He remembers being small - playing under the table and dreaming.”The Best of What's AroundThis is the opening track from the album.  It is about a guy cheering up a friend who is down.  “See you and me have a better time than most can dream, have it better than the best.  So we can pull on through whatever tears at us, whatever holds us down.  And if nothing can be done we'll make the best of what's around.”Lover Lay DownThis is a deep cut off the album, and it is a pretty straightforward love song.  “Oh please lover lay down, spend some time with me.  Together share this smile.”What Would You SayWe don't recommend that you look for a deeper meaning in the lyrics from the lead single from the album.  While the lyrics are mostly nonsense, we do appreciate the line, “I was there when the bear ate his head - thought it was a candy.”  The harmonica will sound familiar to Blues Traveler fans, as John Popper contributes those notes. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Sympathy for the Devil by Guns 'N' Roses (from the motion picture Interview with the Vampire)Axl Rose and company provide their take in this cover of the Rolling Stones song for the horror hit based on Anne Rice's novel. STAFF PICKS:Plowed by SpongeWayne start's this week's staff picks on a rocking track from the Sponge album “Rotting Piñata.”  The song lyrics are about trying to achieve a goal and failing.  “In a world of human wreckage where I'm lost and I'm found and I can't touch the ground, I'm plowed into the sound.”I'll Stand By You by the PretendersAn unusual ballad, Brian brings us  a big hit from Chrissie Hynde and the Pretenders.  This was the first time Hynde wrote in collaboration with others, songwriters Tom Kelly and Billy Steinberg.  Hynde was embarrassed about writing the pop song at first, but warmed up to it over time.  The song reached number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100.Need Your Lovin' by TeslaRob's staff pick is off Tesla's album “Bust A Nut.”  Vocalist Jeff Keith fronts this band made famous in the hair metal era.  This track is a love song, but with a stronger beat than would be the case if it were a ballad.  Tesla continues to tour today.6:00 by Dream TheaterBruce rounds out the staff picks with the opening track from Dream Theater's album Awake.  Keyboardist Kevin Moore penned these lyrics, supposedly about a man stuck in a situation looking for a way out, but in reality about Moore's increasing distance from the band and desire to leave.  The opening samples are from the 1987 movie “The Dead,” a film adaptation of a James Joyce short story. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:#34 by the Dave Matthews BandIt's a little double dipping on the DMB with this instrumental, which would appear on the CD as the 34th track.  A number of bands would “hide” music on distant tracks on their CD releases.

Today is the 5-5-5 portal. May 5, 2021, opens up to the full energy of sovereignty, truth, and wholeness. Felt the pull these last few days to jump into a deeper truth within. As a young girl growing up fearful and silent I know how it feels to be afraid of saying what you really feel. Guided to share in this episode that we are called to step forward to accept our wholeness as we speak our truth. We are fully supported, loved, and honored as we stand in our own power! Sharing personal experiences of stepping into my power and honoring the power of others. I shared two poems from my poetry collection, Surreal Love: Kundalini Awakening Poetry of collectively ascending and yelling in love and birthing! As we open our throat chakra to speak and sing we liberate ourselves and our ancestors. We open up the latent codes within to a new paradigm of living that only we can do. Listen to the entire episode to hear me sing the chorus of "I'll Stand By You". Honoring and witnessing each of you on your sacred journeys as you navigate the waters on your unique path. Together we support each other to elevate, evolve, and ascend into the Fifth Dimensional Paradigm. Elated that our anthology, Who am I? Transmuting Silence, Injustice into Sovereignty, will be coming out later this year with 10 other authors. To receive more information, sign up for my newsletter at gilanehemia.com. Hot Take 1: Rob- “Carribean Queen” by Billy Ocean is a rip off of “Billie Jean” by Michael Jackson. JP- “Just Like A Pill” by Pink has the most rocking triangle part in music history.Hot Take 2: Rob- “Shameless” by Garth Brooks/Billy Joel doesn’t have a chorus, it just flows from one section to the other. JP-  “I want Jesse Frederick to write the theme song of my life when I die.”Hot Take 3: Rob- “I’ll Stand By You” by the Pretenders has one of the sneakiest key changes of all time, or really two key changes that really change no key at all. JP- The greatest “she-mullet” in the history of rock and roll goes to Pat Benatar.Hot Take 4: Rob- Ram Jam should have either rehearsed more or recorded with a click when they recorded “Black Betty.” JP- “Glycerine” by Bush is the most hard rock song ever to have no drums.Hot Take 5: Rob- To be such a classic song, “Sexual Healing” by Marvin Gaye is not very good. JP- The greatest one-two punch of the 80s with lead vocalist and electric guitarist is Steve Perry and Neal Schon of Journey.

Season 4 has been marred by the audacity of 2020 so dont poke a finger at me if you dont hear this until 2021. Were going to keep trucking along and add my Final Thoughts to this as well -- I dont want to make Season 4 any longer than it is already!???? (Romanized: hojopjjimong): The Butterfly Phantasy is a mini album that was released on September 2, 2020. The HZJM translates as a happy dream, and I dont know what that has to do with anything I experienced while listening to this. This isnt to say the album wasnt enjoyable, but were not in a dream sequence. Theres no illusion to it, based on lyrics. That aside, there is sound diversity. This just-over-18-minutes album has dance-pop, anthemic vibes, and R&B tunes that will appeal to a variety of listeners. Unexpectedly, I had a hard time with this album. After the musical blast to the face from the previous two albums, I expected things to continue traversing the same path. As a new listener to these fellows, my expectation that they would be predictable made the unpredictability disappointing. There is nothing wrong with this album, I just needed time to adjust my expectations. The first track, Golden Goose, has a structure that reminded me of Seventeens Getting Closer, something that popular review blog KPOPREVIEWED acknowledged as well (shout out to them!) but again, assumptions about how it should sound made it sound loud to me. In fact, this mini-album was all-around loud to me, its what I remember most. Even the R&B track Stand By You seems to have its decibel cranked up higher than necessary. This album would not be the way Id introduce new fans to the group, not in its entirety, but I can see how it could be magical for long-standing fans. Theyve been around long enough to hear the gentlemen evolve and this feels like a mature spot to end an era of their music with. Therefore, k-pop fans on a scale of 1 to 5 with 5 being essential listening and 1 not worth mentioning, the A3Day rating for HZJM: The Butterfly Phantasy is a 5. It almost didnt make it during my first listen but the composition and quality is undeniable. Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Have a wonderful Winter Solstice, Merry Kwanzaa, and Happy Kisan Diwas. Whichever holidays you celebrate I hope they are amazing. Today I want to talk about Love for our fellow man. Our love for each other. Love is an important part of most religions and cultures. We need love for each other today more than ever. Love is what binds this world and us together. It is what keeps us from blowing each other apart. Love is created after finding things that we have in common. Love is the cure this world needs. I don't care about the differences we have in beliefs. I don't care which of the holidays you celebrate or if you choose not to celebrate any. It is not the holidays you celebrate that bring us together, it is our humanity. I love that you want to improve and change your life! That is something we share. I love that you want to improve the lives of those around you! Love is so important it has been the subject of many songs like “All you need is Love” by the Beatles, "Stand By You” by Rachel Platten, "Count on Me” by Bruno Mars, "You'll Never Walk Alone” by Josh Groban and many others. With Victoria going into another six weeks of tweaked stage 4 lockdown and the UK on the road back into lockdown it would appear we are going to be gridlocked into a lockdown roadloop instead of a roadmap out. The Uncuckables panel discusses with Tim Wilms Editor of The Unshackled, David Hiscox Editor of the XYZ and Logan Spalding. Tim's microphone stops working just after the show begins so Logan shares some songs he has been writing about Dictator Dan. It turns out Melbourne's curfew was not a recommendation of the Chief Health Officer nor Police Commissioner. Following their conduct last week Victoria Police have again been harassing grannies and pregnant women for sitting on a park bench during their exercise. We have not heard from from 'Chief Wiggum' Luke Cornelius since last week, maybe all the fat-shaming was too much for him.  Dan Andrews has claimed we must open up slowly but Melbourne nurses still had time to perform a rehearsed version 'I'll Stand By You' playing musical instruments. Even worse in Melbourne, the city council refused to deliver One Nation stubby holders to the lockedown public housing towers because residents might be offended by them. While rumours are circulating about a crisis in the Victorian Government it is the NSW Government which could be falling apart. The National Party is threatening to sit on the crossbench if a koala habitat protection bill is not withdrawn. Annastacia Palaszczuk's hard border closure has meant a young woman has missed both seeing her father before he died and his funeral. She is also hindering four young children seeing their dad before he dies later this year. She claims she is being billed to grant more border exemptions saying it is out of her hands up to medical advice. But her Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young has said she has granted exemptions to the AFL and Tom Hanks for economic not medical reasons. The UK appears to be softening its citizens up for a second lockdown due to a spike in cases with limiting gatherings. The Oxford University coronavirus vaccine trial has been halted after a participant had an adverse reaction. Though Australian Health Minister Greg Hunt said the vaccine will be rolled out on schedule in January next year. Party Favorz is back with the annual Holiday Edition featuring HOT Santas' and even HOTTER big room, circuit, tribal house music! Folks, I worked this shit out! It kicks off with the Offer Nissim remix of "I'm Standing With You" by Chrissy Metz from the "Breakthrough" soundtrack, which is currently riding up the Dance Club charts. While the song might as well by the Pretenders "I'll Stand By You," I expect it to be this year's "This Is Me" or "Let It Go." Things quickly heat up as the set launches into some peak-hour tribal madness and hold it there pretty much throughout. We've brand-spanking new tracks from Dua Lipa, Selena Gomez, Galantis & Dolly Parton, Madonna, Debby Holiday, Sam Smith, Judy Garland (say what?),  and the entertainer of the year Lizzo. We also have the massive new track "Just A Lie" from the indomitable Kristine W. Pt. 1 of this release contains a bevy of remixes that are ripe for any dancefloor. The Tony Moran and Erick Ibiza mix included here is stellar with a few caveats. Clocking in at over 9 minutes, the remix feels a bit outdated and frankly unfinished. After the intro, it goes into an extended repetition of the same beats with virtually no build for 2 minutes. Instead of capitalizing on the awesome riff developed for the track it includes several unnecessary drops. I took a blunt knife to the whole track and created my mix show version emphasizing its strengths to make it shine while retaining and shortening two of the drops. All the elements of a great mix are there but it was stretched way beyond what's considered reasonable in the age of streaming and waning attention spans. I've always included tracks from independent labels like Swishcraft (Matt Consola) but have been discovering the awesomeness of other independent labels like Guareber Recordings headed by Nacho Chapado and Ivan Gomez as well as  Queen House Music, EPride Music Digital (Edson Pride), and Bearlin Records amongst several others. There's so much unheard goodness being spun out from these mighty labels that are often overlooked that allows me to keep these sets fresh. In fact, Holiday Edition 2019 is the first set where half of the recordings come from these labels. Their output is so great that it's difficult to keep up as I grabbed a few tracks from the summer. Just remember, there isn't anyone rounding these great sounds like Party Favorz. I do the hours of listening and compiling so you don't have to. I've already compiled the tracklist for the Year In Dance, which features the biggest commercial Dance Club tracks of the year, which I should start releasing over the course of the next week and a half. I hope everybody has a fabulous weekend. Until the next time...ENJOY! Album: Holiday Edition 2019 Genre: Circuit, Tribal, House Year: 2019 Total Time: 02:58:09 1. This episode was brought to you by Singing Mastery Masterclass you can access the free training here: http://tinabangel.com/singingmasterymasterclass This episode is different from our normal podcast structure.  It was a recording of Marlisa's press conference held in Sydney. Marlisa dives into the songwriting process and inspiration of her new album I am Brave.  I ask her the question I ask all my guests "What does One Voice can change the world mean to you?" also she shares why she thinks Filipinos are great at singing and how can budding singers improve their singing voice. She is later joined with Taylor Henderson and Makisig Morales who will bring another fun dimension to Marlisa's concert on the 17th of August 2019 held at Blacktown Workers Club brought to you by MENM Productions. Profile: "At the age of only 15, Marlisa stole hearts all over the world during her journey on The X Factor Australia 2014. With a voice to challenge some of the greatest divas Australia has ever produced, it came as no surprise when this sweet Australian/Filipino teenager was victorious in the finale episode. Both likeable and talented, Marlisa has gone from strength to strength since being crowned the youngest X-Factor Winner in the show’s history. Despite her youth, Marlisa is a seasoned performer. She began singing at a very young age, and quickly followed up performing at events, charity concerts and eisteddfods, impressing local audiences along the way. “I was actually performing alongside my brother, who plays piano, since I was around three years old. My grandmother said she thought I had a real talent and suggested to my parents that they continue to encourage and support me. From then on I used to perform at birthday parties and Christmas parties, and that led onto charity events and competitions.” Eager – and destined – to audition for the The X Factor, she was previously held back by the minimum age restriction and waited patiently until she was 14. Within months of her audition she was performing in front of industry giants John Legend and her mentor Ronan Keating in New York, dueting on stage with her idol Jessica Mauboy, and winning Australian audiences over with her adorable and endearing presence. After signing with Sony Music Australia, Marlisa released new music which immediately topped the charts. Her debut single “Stand By You” was nominated for Song of the Year at the 2015 ARIA Awards and was certified Platinum selling over 70,000 copies. The success of the single was followed up with her self-titled album MARLISA(2014), which debuted at #6 on the ARIA albums chart and was also certified Gold. In early 2018, Marlisa extended her international presence and signed with Star Music Phils (ABS-CBN) as well as Tarsier Records to join other Kapamilya stars. This was followed by the release of two of her new singles ‘Thank You’ and ‘Steel’ as part of her upcoming album release." I have had the honour to work with Marlisa, together with 3 other wonderful singers, Chelsea Castillo (Australia's got Talent), Bernadette Marquez (All together now) and Mikee De Leon during Sharon Cuneta's concert at the Evan Theatre, Penrith. I hope you enjoy this episode of the podcast as much as I enjoyed attending the event.  Thank you to Sheila Raptis for the invitation.  Here are some photos from the event taken by Bob Reyes. There are some people who say that only 10% of the people you know like you. But a friend is a friend, right? Well, not exactly. There are different levels of friendship which are never obvious on the surface. It's only when you reach a crisis point in your life that you find out just who your true friends are. On the one hand, we have our best friends who are often closer to us than our family. They share all our secrets and know us inside and out. But we also have our "fair weather friends" who help us to celebrate and only arrive on our doorsteps when they need something from us. Then there are our invisible friends who aren't really there at all. If you believe that you have at least one true friend, who cares about you and will stand by you through the good times and the bad consider this: if you were to lose your job, your car and be on the verge of losing your home, would they still be there for you?

After Linda Ronstadt scored a Top 10 hit with Billy Steinberg’s “How Do I Make You” in 1980, he went on to score a series of chart-topping singles co-written with Tom Kelly, including “Like a Virgin” by Madonna, “True Colors” by Cyndi Lauper, “Alone” by Heart, "So Emotional" by Whitney Houston, and “Eternal Flame” by the Bangles. Additional Top 10 hits from the Steinberg/Kelly songbook include “In Your Room” by the Bangles, “I Touch Myself” by Divinyls, “I’ll Stand By You” by The Pretenders, and “I Drove All Night,” which was a major international hit three different times, first by Cyndi Lauper, then by Roy Orbison, and, finally, by Celine Dion. After Tom Kelly retired from the music business, Steinberg partnered with Rick Nowels, with whom he won a Grammy for their work on the title track to Celine Dion’s multiplatinum Falling Into You album in 1996. Since the mid-2000s, Billy has written extensively with Josh Alexander, with whom he penned JoJo's Top 5 pop hit "Too Little Too Late" and Demi Lovato’s “Give Your Heart a Break." Additionally, the pair partnered with songwriter/producer – and previous Songcraft guest - Toby Gad for Nicole Scherzinger's #1 UK chart-topper "Don't Hold Your Breath.” Other artists who’ve contributed to Steinberg’s long list of Billboard charting singles include Pat Benatar, Tina Turner, Susanna Hoffs, Chicago, Bette Midler, Ace of Base, Phil Collins, Katharine McPhee, Carrie Underwood, and many others. Tom Kelly and Billy Steinberg were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2011.
