On March 23rd, 2025 the Sam and Esther Dolgoff Institute (SEDI) hosted David Van Deusen for a talk about insurgent labor, the current state of the unions, and the future of our libertarian and socialist fight against domination and exploitation. David is a libertarian socialist, the former president of the Vermont AFL-CIO and United Slate champion, and one time member of the Green Mountain Anarchist Collective.Though SEDI has hosted several guests before, the discussion isn't usually recorded. The EU, Europe's great post-war peace project, can feel beleaguered today. Global and continental uncertainties collide, and things are complicated in Brussels, Belgium, the heart of the European Union. Two clubs from that capital survived in the Europa League, though none bear Brussels' city name: RSC Anderlecht, with the beautiful color of purple, and Royal Union St Gilloise, a recent regular guest in European club competitions. And in a multinational, multilingual European Union, in Brussels, Belgium, a multilingual, multiethnic country (French, Dutch and German are Belgium's official languages), it's Royal Union that fittingly has a multinational, multilinguistic fanclub. Its beginnings lie in a group of EU employees from other countries who met on the standing terraces of the Stade Joseph Marien, St. Gilles' legendary homeground. Joining me today are Ana, from Portugal, who works for the European Commission, one of the Branches of the European Union, and Seppe, from Belgium, who "works a normal job”. They are members of the above mentioned multinational, multilingual fanclub - "beunion" is its name. This is a conversation about the rise back to the top of one of Belgium's oldest and most unique clubs, about the state of the Union that is Union St Gilloise, but also the European Union, and the continent, these days. HELPFUL LINKS FOR THIS EPISODE: bEUnion - fanclub website, in EnglishThe full cup final of Union vs. Royal Antwerpen FC 2024, with nice USG pyro to startUSG's history on wikipediaStade Joseph Marien, stadium guide with photosNEW: send me a text message! With strike action in Britain set to intensify over the coming months, what is the state of our trade unions? Can they really force the Government's hand over the cost of living crisis? Jane Holgate, Employment Relations professor at the University of Leeds, joins Alex Andreou to unpack what unions want, who supports them, and the challenges they face. “Trade unionism is all about the imbalance of power in the employment relationship.” “The Government is involved whether it likes it or not.” “Google searches for trade union membership have increased dramatically.” “Thatcher came to power with the purpose of curbing union power, voted in by millions from the working class.” “Given the huge profits companies are making, what workers are asking for isn't unreasonable.” “If Labour wants to be the party of the working class then it must reflect their interests.” “If you annoy workers enough then you'll see productivity fall.” https://www.patreon.com/bunkercast Presented by Alex Andreou. On this week's show, excerpts from some of the Network shows that focused on AFL-CIO president Richard Trumka, who died on August 5. In a year when we lost so many, it's still hard to believe that Rich – who walked so many picket lines, who thundered forth at so many rallies -- is really no longer with us. So it was a special honor to listen through the labor radio shows and podcasts that paid tribute to Rich Trumka, to hear the old stories and some new ones, and to hear his voice once again. We begin with the AFL-CIO's own podcast, State of the Unions, which talked with a characteristically optimistic Trumka in 2018, followed by a 2020 Labor Day interview on America's Work Force Radio. Then labor historian Joe McCartin, who been invited onto the August 5 Your Rights At Work show to discuss the 40th anniversary of the PATCO strike, reacts to Trumka's death that morning. We go back to the State of the Unions podcast and America's Work Force Radio for thoughts on Trumka's life and legacy from Secretary of Labor Marty Walsh and The Nation's John Nichols. Then it's out to the Northwest for reactions on the ground on the Working to Live in Southwest Washington podcast, and on Labor Express Radio, labor educator Steven Ashby casts a critical eye on Trumka's legacy. Finally, we wrap up with the Labor History Today podcast, where Rich Trumka – who rose to national prominence when he led the 1988 Pittston strike – recounts how the mine workers won that historic strike.   Highlights from labor radio and podcast shows around the country, part of the national Labor Radio Podcast Network of shows focusing on working people's issues and concerns. #LaborRadioPod @AFLCIO @AWFUnionPodcast @DCLabor @SWWACLC @WLUW @DCLabor Edited and produced by Chris Garlock; social media guru Harold Phillips.

Then, on the America's Work Force Radio podcast's Labor Day show from last year, Trumka tackles a raft of issues, from the effect of the pandemic on workers to the PRO Act, worker safety, the National Labor Relations Board and a whole lot more. Finally, on Your Rights At Work, broadcast last Thursday, just an hour after learning about Trumka's death, labor historian Joe McCartin discusses Trumka's life and his legacy. We take a deep dive behind the scenes of the film industry and explore the backbone of the men and women who work 90 hour work weeks to bring us the blockbusters we come to love on our screens. This isn't your regular 9-5. A job in the film world isn't just your regular salaried position. It needs protection, benefits and organization to thrive and protect those who bring us what we love.Aside from Jimmy Hoffa staring down our backs during this podcast, we drop a quick line or two on the craziness of the Oscar Noms, Lin Manuel Miranda and James Cameron coming back for his crown.Listen in!![Preshow]Oscar Noms: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/93rd_Academy_AwardsThe Oscar Show:https://www.indiewire.com/2021/03/academy-hollywood-oscars-in-oscars-2021-1234623866/The Snyder Cut reviews:https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/zack_snyders_justice_league[Main Feature]The History of Hollywood & The Unions:https://artsandculture.google.com/exhibit/hollywood-and-the-unions-archive-of-american-television/mQKC-cclRGuzLQ?hl=enThe Unions & The Gig Economyhttps://qz.com/1052310/hollywood-unions-offer-the-perfect-model-for-the-beaten-down-workers-of-todays-gig-economy/Hollywood & The Pollshttps://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/how-unions-are-pushing-hollywood-workers-to-the-pollsProductions Back in Action:https://apnews.com/article/virus-outbreak-los-angeles-hollywood-archive-245453a19f9ab0b4345633ea28c54057The WGA Vs. On the 125th anniversary of Labor Day, the FOX News Rundown takes a deep look at America's labor movement. According to a recent Gallup report, union membership is at its lowest levels in 15 years. While candidates are still jockeying for the support of organized labor, it is unclear if those endorsements will have the same impact in 2020 as they had in prior elections. Steven Greenhouse, author of "Beaten Down, Worked Up: The Past, Present, and Future of American Labor," joins FOX News Rundown host Dave Anthony to discuss the state of unions in America. Former NFL player and coach Tony Dungy and his wife Lauren have devoted much of their lives to family and football. On the FOX News Rundown, Tony and Lauren Dungy join FOX's Chris Foster to discuss their new children's book "Carson Chooses Forgiveness," their passion for adoption and the NFL season that kicks off later this week!
