Book Vs. Movie: The NaturalThe 1952 Novel Vs. the 1984 Movie"The Natural" by Bernard Malamud and its 1984 movie adaptation directed by Barry Levinson offers different experiences despite sharing the same storyline. The book delves deeper into the psychological aspects of the protagonist and explores themes of fate, ambition, and the corrupting influence of success. The film focuses more on the romantic and mythic elements of the narrative and simplifies certain plotlines and characters. However, it's visually stunning with a powerful score that enhances the story's emotional impact. Which did we (the Margos) prefer? Have a listen to find out. In this ep, the Margos discuss:Author Bernard Malamud and the character of Roy Hobbs. The biggest differences between the book and the movie. The genre of “baseball movies.” The cast of the 1984  film includes Robert Redford (Roy Hobbs,) Robert Duvall (Max Mercy,) Glenn Close (Iris Gaines,) Kim Basinger (Memo Paris,) Wilford Brimley (Pop Fisher,) Barbara Hershey (Harriet Bird,) Robert Prosky (The Judge,) Richard Farnsworth (Red Blow,) Joe Don Baker (The Whammer,) Darren McGavin (Gus Sands,) Michael Madsen (Bump Bailey) and John Finnegan as Sam Simpson.   Clips used:“Batting practice with Wonderboy”The Natural (1984 trailer)“New Right Fielder” “Striking Out the Whammer”“The Lady in White”“Final homerun”Music by Randy NewmanBook Vs. Lyra is one of Ireland's fastest rising stars - her music has featured on Love Island, Grey's Anatomy, X-Factor and RTE's Striking Out, she has performed on TV shows such as Dancing with the Stars and Ireland's Got Talent and, get this, she's just back from London having opened for Pink in Hyde Park! Lyra is also hilariously funny and we had so much fun together in the studio. Six months of pre-production. Six months of principal photography. Six weeks in the edit. Quantum of Solace has long been seen as a victim of the Writers Strike. In 2005, Daniel Craig was announced as the new James Bond. On the same day, producer Michael G Wilson mentioned that work had already started on Craig's second Bond film. With the support of Screen Skills Ireland and in partnership with the Cork International Film Festival, last November, WFT Ireland presented a very special panel ‘In Her Own Voice: Spotlight on Crew' as part of the First Take Industry Day. Moderated by our chair Dr Susan Liddy, this lively discussion featured director/camera woman Edel O Brien, Grip Hollie Tsan and DOP and WFT Vice-Chair Jaro Waldeck. This event was organised with the support of Screen Skills Ireland. Hollie Tsan is an assistant grip. At 5 years old she was out on the set of single handed helping her dad with loading trucks and prepping grip equipment and meeting new people. When she was 12 she was on Fergie the little grey tractor pushing the dolly and since then she knew she wanted to become a grip. She was a trainee on Striking Out, End of Sentence, Miss Scarlet and the Duke and Conversations with Friends and then an assistant grip on holding, and a second grip on the Queen Mary in London. She helped build rigs for the Galway Girl music video. She also flies drones, she did her first drone shot when she was 14 on a commercial and did a few drone shots on Holding. She is 17 and has been working in the industry for the last 5 years. She has various departments in the industry such as stunts and hair and makeup however finds gripping more exciting and interesting. Edel O'Brien: For over 30 years, Edel has worked in documentary and factual programming in Ireland and abroad as both a Series Director and Shooting DP. The focus of her work is to portray powerful, entertaining stories that reveal characters whose voices are not so often heard. Over the last decade, award-winning Irish television series include: Raised By The Village, The Rotunda, The Shelbourne, Life & Death, Ireland's Battle With Covid and Bullyproof. It all began donkey's years ago with a short live-action animation combination Bread & Honey, which won awards at Cork, Annecy, Berlin and Chicago Film Festivals as well as C4's First Work award. A last minute opportunity to travel to Russia with a group of Irish teens to the Perm State Ballet School sparked a long-term solo-shooting project which became a BBC Video Diary The Reluctant Mamoushka. This adventure and success sparked the beginning of an on-going passion to capture and convey true lives as they unfold. Edel is currently working on Heaven Made, a new BBC2 series about Monastic life in Ireland and the UK, to be broadcast in December 2021. Jaro Waldeck started her journey in cinematography with undergraduate photography studies in the USA. Soon, she realised she was interested in movement in her images and made the transition to cinematography studies at Columbia College Chicago. She graduated in 2008 and was placed on a coveted internship with Oscar nominated DOP Phedon Papamichael, ASC (Sideways, Walkd the Line, Nebraska, Ford vs. Ferrari) on a movie “W.” which he was shooting for Oliver Stone. After the internship, Jaro moved back home to Prague, Czech Republic, where she pursued further cinematography studies at the world renowned film school Film and Television Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts (FAMU). She studied under the guidance of accomplished and award winning cinematographers such as Miroslav Ondricek (Amadeus) and Vladimir Smutny (The Painted Bird), and graduated with a Masters Degree in Cinematography in 2011. The following year Jaro moved to Ireland, where she's worked on short narrative and documentary films, commercial and corporate productions and kept up her photography work alongside it all. If you would like join a group of like minded Goal Getters who want to become Goal Getting Masters, join us by Going to GoalGettingPodcast.com/masters to sign up and I will add you to the Facebook Group. Click Below to Listen to Today's Show   Never Let the Fear of Striking Out Get in Your Way. - Babe Ruth   Base ball players hate to strike out. It is a failure to not get on base. Your OBP, or On Base Percentage is critical in today's game. I first heard of this statistic when I read the book Money Ball by Michael Lewis. My then boss and COO of our company, a numbers guy, told me about the book. I downloaded an audiobook of Money Ball and listened to it. I hadn't been interested in baseball in a while and this opened my eyes to it once again. The book was made into a movie.  The point was that having a home run is great, but the more times you get on base, the better chance you have of scoring. The odds of hitting it out of the park are low. Swinging for the fences is good, and like goals we want to have that Big Hairy Audacious Goal, that Grand Slam, but sometimes you have to work at our goals one step at a time.  The more players you get on base in an inning, the better odds for scoring. Getting on base is getting hits (singles, doubles and triples), enduring through mediocre pitches to a Base on Balls, a Walk, drawing a Balk, or even getting hit by the ball (ouch). Striking out is often thought of as a failure. It's not good, but it happens. A pitcher will often try to paint the corners, or throw a curve or slider that looks like it's coming down the middle, but goes wide or low. Being able to watch the ball and waiting for the right pitch will result in 4 Balls before 3 Strikes and you are on base.  If 4 batters are able to do that, you have 1 run and 3 more in line to continue. If you are afraid of Striking Out, you may not be able to wait for that 4th ball. If you fear the strike, you may swing at the low and inside pitch and Strike Out. Or you may walk to First Base. Don't Fear the Strike Out and you may still achieve your goal of getting on base. Now, if the right pitch comes along, Swing for the Fences - Take the Big Hairy Audacious Swing and Score the Home Run!  But as Babe Ruth said,   Never Let the Fear of Striking Out Get in Your Way.       Receive Your Goal Getting Podcast Monthly Quote Pack Special Get 20 AWESOME images full of great quotes in your email each month!
