Step back into the whimsy of childhood TV with a dash of grown-up insight as we reminisce about the '90s show "Beetleborgs," and then strap in for a candid chat about "The Mandalorian" — where does it hit the mark, and where does it miss? Our banter takes a playful turn as we reflect on the humorous trials of midlife and the curious expressiveness of iconic helmets. But it's not all fun and games; David Arquette's wrestling redemption tugs at the heartstrings, with real-life consequences and a gritty pursuit of respect in the documentary "You Cannot Kill David Arquette."Prepare for a cinematic ride, folks! We'll navigate through the wilds of upcoming movie sequels and reboots, questioning the Predator's tech in the 1880s and how "Black Panther 2" will honor a legend. Discussions get a comedic spin with the "Deadpool 3" scriptwriters, and then it's a hop into the unknown with "The Frankenstein Chronicles." Are you intrigued by TV's "Resident Alien" and its take on extraterrestrial identity crises? Because we sure are — and we're bringing you the down-low on what to expect from this new series. This episode is for the gamers, echoing with the hum of the Xbox Series X and the immersive worlds of "Assassin's Creed Valhalla" and "Cyberpunk 2077." Our gaming roots show as we list our top 10 multiplayer games that have left an indelible mark on us, from "Rainbow Six" to "Halo." And before we sign off, we'll tease you with a peek into the mayhem of an underworld crew, but you'll have to tune in to catch all the exhilarating details! Join us for an episode where nostalgia meets novelty, and we navigate the landscape of entertainment with hearty discussions and plenty of laughs.Support the show

The Frankenstein Chronicles are dark and violent, and they deal implicitly with the issue of abortion. That's probably not a recipe for mainstream appeal. But even if you're not a fan of the macabre, this is a production well worth your consideration. Mere escapist fiction it is not. This is a public episode. Plus Phil recommends the new Starz series Counterpart, which is NOT (unfortunately) currently available on Amazon Prime as Phil says on the show --unless you have the Starz app. [Of course, you could do the one-week free trial and binge watch the show, but we would never recommend that people do anything like that.] BONUS: Stephen says you totally CAN watch Blade Runner 2049 on Amazon Prime -- so there is that. On this episode of The Harold & Maudecast, hosts Sarah Mason and Jake Essoe review Netflix 'The Frankenstein Chronicles'. 'The Frankenstein Chronicles' starring Sean Bean is the most bingeworthy new drama series on Netflix. After years in purgatory, (first bought by A&E in 2015 but never produced), the series refused to die. Created by Benjamin Ross and Barry Langford, it is a loose reimagining of the Frankenstein legend. At its core a bold, solid detective story cleverly weaving literary giants like Mary Shelly and William Blake into the story without being too cheeky. The Joy of Geek Podcast, Episode 59: Black Panther Review and Spoilercast On this episode of The Joy of Geek Podcast, we (Rich and Kevin) discuss the biggest movie of 2018 thus far - Marvel's Black Panther - which has made more than $700 Million to date and is showing no signs of slowing down. And to help us discuss director Brian Coogler's unique vision of Wakanda, we welcome special guest / writer / comics afficianado, Quin Melvin. Quin will be hosting a panel later this month called “Writers of Wakanda,” and he shares with us his unique insights about the comics and the film, and some of the important social implications of the series. This episode is a SPOILERCAST in the truest sense of the word, and we go in-depth to discuss all aspects of Black Panther, including its overall structure and plot, colorful cast of characters, unique Wakandan setting, and the nature of heroes and villains (or anti-villains) in the film. On that note, we also take also take a deeper dive into Michael B. Jordan's portrayal of Kilmonger, who is clearly the film's standout character, and a subject of much celebration and debate since its release. And to round out the festivities, we switch gears slightly to discuss Marvel's recent announcement of “A Fresh Start” (AKA, their May relaunch) when their comics universe will be shaken up with an assortment of new titles and writer/artist pairings. We also discuss the movies, TV shows and comics we‘ve been enjoying lately, with Annihilation, Altered Carbon, The Frankenstein Chronicles, CW's Black Lightning and DC's Mister Miracle serving as particular highlights. So join us, for an epic podcast journey - deep into the heart of Wakanda - that leaves us teetering, breathless, on the precipice between life, death and the Ancestral Plane. This...is the Joy of Geek!

Another week, another episode. We're still in the midst of Olympics mayhem, which means a lot of shows have yet to return or premiere. But that'll change soon. Until then, uh ... what's your favorite brunch food? NEWS HIGHLIGHTS THIS WEEK: "The Walking Dead" star Lauren Cohan has yet to renew her contract for Season 9. She's not necessarily leaving the show but has been grappling with AMC over less-than-satisfactory salary offers. She has just been cast as the lead in a new ABC pilot called "Whiskey Cavalier." The show would star "Scandal's" Scott Foley and is described as a "high-octane hourlong action dramedy that follows the adventures of tough but tender FBI super-agent Will Chase (codename: "Whiskey Cavalier") who, following an emotional breakup, is assigned to work with badass CIA operative Francesca "Frankie" Trowbridge (codename: "Fiery Tribune"). Together, they lead an interagency team of flawed, funny, heroic spies who periodically save the world (and each other) while navigating the rocky roads of friendship, romance and office politics." CBS is rebooting "L.A. Confidential" as a TV series. Walton Goggins will star as "Detective Jack Vincennes, who is described as all swagger and flash with a movie-star smile. He knows how the system works and uses it to his best advantage, including some corrupt shakedowns on the side." Kevin Spacey played the role in the 1997 movie. CBS cast it's new "Magnum P.I." Thomas Magnum will be played by Jay Hernandez, who is a Mexican American. He previously played Dimitri Havelock in "The Expanse" and Daniel Acosta in Fox's short-lived series "Gang Related." Comedy Central has renewed "Drunk History" for a 6th season Fox News is launching a streaming service called "Fox Nation" in late 2018 and will be targeted towards the network's "super fans" Comedian Michelle Wolf — hot off of getting her own Netflix late-night series — will host this year's White House Correspondents Dinner. It'll happen on April 28th. Mild spoilers for Insidious (2010) and The Conjuring (2013). In this episode: We discuss horror movies, TV, and video games coming up in 2016. MOVIES: The Witch (or The VVitch) The Conjuring 2 Ian provides his frank opinions on James Wan's movies. Phantasm 5 James Wan-produced Lights Out film The original short, Lights Out TV: Damien (sequel to The Omen) The Frankenstein Chronicles Fio points out via Guillermo del Toro on Twitter: https://twitter.com/RealGDT/status/687122355642994688 Lucifer (FOX) The X-Files Penny Dreadful (Season 3) Also: the Hannibal Cookbook is coming out! VIDEO GAMES: Top Horror Games to Anticipate in 2016 Also, we don't mention this on the podcast, but What Remains of Edith Finch looks pretty cool. THERE'S ALWAYS AN ADDENDUM: We recorded this on the 12th, so there are plenty of things that have been announced since then that we didn't cover on this episode. Apologies for the delay. Rose Byrne played the mother in Insidious, not Vera Farmiga. Again--these movies. Although--let us apologize for dropping some serious shade on Insidious and The Conjuring during this cast. From Fio: It's not that I can't tell Insidious and The Conjuring apart when watching them, it's that when I think about them, I can't remember which scenes are part of which movie. Corroborative evidence: This is the Insidious scene I (Ian) was talking about, but boy, did I recall it wrong. Skype did actually record the beginning of the podcast, despite my belief that it hadn't, so that's what you're hearing in the outtakes at the end.  More from Fio: How did I not mention 1989 classic Warlock when we were talking about witch movies? I'm going to apologize to our listeners for my lack of Phantasm expertise, but to be fair you kinda put me on the spot there, Ian. Hahaha. Can we get back to releasing cool horror flicks around all hallows? That would be nice. Natalie Dormer also plays her sister in that flick (The Forest), and from that sounds of it that's the reason she took the job. Interviews make it sound like she was just checking something off a list where she plays against herself. Sam Neill totally plays Damien in the 3rd Omen movie.  Music: "This is My Design" - Ian Doherty | SoundCloud | Bandcamp | http://archive.org/download/AMOT088/AMOT088.mp3
