A jury in Denton County on Tuesday found 39-year-old Jay A. Rotter, a former deputy with the Tarrant County Sheriff's Office, guilty of murdering his special-needs girlfriend, Leslie Hartman. The 46-year-old woman, a paraplegic and popular artist in the area, was shot in the temple with Rotter's service weapon in August 2020. Rotter then attempted to stage her death as a suicide. The Denton County Criminal District Attorney's Office announced the jury's decision, revealing that Rotter was convicted of one count of murder. The same jury sentenced him to 30 years in a state correctional facility. Rotter had initially called 911, reporting that Hartman had suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside her home on Robinwood Lane. However, the evidence presented during the trial painted a different picture. First responders found Hartman dead, with Rotter covered in blood from the waist down. According to the Denton Police Department, Rotter claimed that his girlfriend unexpectedly shot herself while he was watching a movie at his desk in a bedroom. He was subsequently arrested on a $1 million bond. Hartman, confined to a wheelchair due to injuries from a past car crash, had been living with Rotter for about six months. The investigation revealed damning evidence from Rotter's cellphone, particularly messages on the Discord app around the time of Hartman's death. In a message that was never sent but later recovered from drafts, Rotter allegedly wrote, "I TOLD HER. LISTEN. ONE SHOT ONLY. THEY CALL IT IN AFTER AND THEY CAN." Another message mentioned shooting a "9 millie in this f—— hippy." Prosecutors argued that Rotter's statements to officers contradicted the evidence at the scene, pointing to the lack of gunshot residue or blood splatter on Hartman's hands, covered by a blanket. Rotter, on the other hand, had both gunshot residue and blood on his hands, suggesting an attempt to wash them. During the trial, Rotter's defense claimed the messages were about shooting a milk bottle in the backyard and argued there was no history of domestic violence between the couple. However, the jury deliberated for only three hours before convicting Rotter, rejecting the defense's arguments. Rotter, who joined the sheriff's office in 2005 and was fired in 2020 following the shooting, now faces a lengthy prison sentence. Sheriff Bill Waybourn expressed shock and sadness over the incident, stating, "We believe in the criminal justice process, and the truth will prevail." Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? After the latest group of migrants arrived in LA this week, this time out of Texas, Governor Gavin Newsom has said he's begun working with a Texas Sheriff to quote "compare notes" when it comes to possibly bringing criminal charges against Florida Governor Ron DeSantis for a similar incident. This latest development is bringing increased attention to the question of whether or not a prosecution for these events is even in the cards. This week on FiredUp! - More drama over Gov DeSantis shipping asylum seeking immigrants from Texas to Massachusetts. Now a Texas Sheriff is proposing charges against the Florida Governor for transporting them under false pretenses, which could lead to them getting nonimmigrant status visas and remaining in the US until their court dates. - Former President Trump says he would consider appearing before the Jan 6th Committee to testify “if it would be done under his terms”. Specifically, he wants his testimony broadcast live and in real time. Others have testified live only after their taped depositions have been shown during the live hearings. No formal reply has been given by either side in the matter. - The Supreme Court is expected to announce soon when they will hear arguments on the Moore v. Harper case out of North Carolina which will address the legality of the Independent State Legislature Rule which would give the legislature of the State near unassailable control over federal elections and likely lock in one-party rule in the states. - We discuss the Georgia Senate debate between Warnock and Walker and how both candidates did or did not get their (or any) message out.

This week, we get back into the classic true crime wheelhouse with a look at one of the most brutal, monstrous serial killers of the past twenty years. Israel Keyes wore a mask as a small business owner, a father, and a loving boyfriend. But upwards of a dozen people got to see his real self firsthand: a brutal, relentless murderer who sadistically killed the easiest possible targets. This week, we explore Keyes’ life, and the horrible case that got him caught. Also, This Week In Murder explores a Texas Sheriff facing evidence tampering charges tied to the hit show Live PD and a murder-suicide involving a former MLB Player. A Texas Sheriff and a U.S. Marshal describe the violent criminal history of Kenneth Allen McDuff -- AKA "The Broomstick Killer." They and their fathers helped capture McDuff for the abduction and murder of three Fort Worth teenagers in 1966. The brutality and rape of a teenage girl with a jagged broomstick handle were seared into their memories. Twenty-five years later, they discover that McDuff is the modern-day “Jack The Ripper” of Central Texas. Two days after the former death row inmate walked out of prison on parole, women's bodies started showing up. And women started getting snatched in plain sight, never to be seen alive again. Coach Abar Rouse shares his journey from moving from New York to Texas when he was growing up and then his decade of coaching college basketball at the DI, NAIA, D2 and JUCO ranks. He was a Student Manager at Midwestern State before transferring to Baylor to and immediately being named Head Student Manager and then returned to Midwestern State after graduating. His coaching dream took him to multiple states in different time zones just trying to move up the ranks. After having a tremendous squad at McClennan CC and interacting with numerous college coaches like Bob Knight, he accepted a job at his alma mater as Baylor's Director of Basketball Operations under Dave Bliss. In 2003 a murder took place and one of their players [Patrick Dennehy] was the victim. Dave Bliss not only paid the tuition of multiple players and tried to make the late Patrick Dennehy out to be a drug dealer. Despite the potential allegations of extortion, obstruction of justice and witness tampering, no criminal charges were filed against Bliss. Coach Rouse sought advice from coaching mentors and friends in the business as well as lawyers. He was threatened by his boss [Bliss] to go along with the scheme or he would be fired, and ultimately took the advice of his coaching mentors [some of whom are still in the business] recorded Bliss instructing players to fabricate the story of Dennehy being a drug dealer to the University's investigative committee and also said that talking to the McLennan County, Texas Sheriff's Department would give him the opportunity to "practice" his story. The tapes also showed that Bliss and his staff knew that Dennehy had been threatened by two of their teammates when they publicly denied such knowledge. Afterwards Coach Rouse was the lone member of the staff who did not receive a show clause penalty from the NCAA, yet was essentially blackballed by the coaching fraternity. One of his idols Mike Krzyzewski, was one of the prominent coaches who publicly criticized him yet Coach Rouse didn't blame Coach K since he didn't have all of the facts. He managed to land back at Midwestern State for a third stint under Coach Jeff Ray, but ultimately left the business on his own terms after a successful season there. He began a career with overseeing and managing prison which was much more stable and allowed him to develop. I personally look forward to Abar Rouse coaching basketball again after he can retire from his non-coaching career. He provides great insight for aspiring coaches as well as shares his opinions on the Adidas scandal as well as other current events.
