Sporting a sparkling sky-blue tail, Rachel Smith goes to work every day as a professional mermaid. It turns out, you can find mermaids swimming all over the West—if you know where to look! Every May, they congregate at the California Mermaid Convention, the longest-running mermaid event in the West (which Smith co-founded), to parade through the cobblestone streets of Old Sacramento. In this episode, Smith dives into the colorful history of a cultural movement that dates back to the early 1900s. Learn about the craft required for their elaborate costumes and how they gracefully perform underwater without looking like “flappy fish.” For Smith, mermaiding offers more than just her job as head mermaid at the Dive Bar in Sacramento: It's where she's found a community of fellow merfolk. Get an inside look at some unlikely, landlocked destinations where mermaids swim in bars, casinos, and motel pools. Splashy mermaid spots include: Dive Bar, Sacramento, California: Nightly mermaid shows in a 40-foot saltwater tank. The California Mermaid Convention, Sacramento: A weekend of mermaid magic, including the Promenade of Mermaids through Old Town. Silverton Casino, Las Vegas, Nevada: Mermaids swim in a massive aquarium you can walk all the way around. Sip 'n Dip Lounge, Great Falls, Montana: A 1960s tiki bar where mermaids glide past porthole windows behind the bar. Guest Bio  Rachel Smith has been the head mermaid at the Dive Bar in downtown Sacramento since it opened in 2011. There, she trains, schedules, hires, and performs with a team of mermaids and mermen who swim nightly in a 40-foot saltwater aquarium. Born in Hawaii to two professional hula dancers, she's one half of Mermaid and Mom, a company she runs with her mother, Laurie, bringing mermaid entertainment to events across Northern California and creating a fully swimmable line of fabric mermaid tails. Since becoming a professional aquatic entertainer, Mermaid Rachel has performed across the United States and internationally—at corporate events, mermaid conventions, and festivals, and as a featured performer in documentaries and films. In 2019, she and her business partner Mermaid Ashley produced the first-ever California Mermaid Convention, which now draws hundreds of merfolk to Sacramento each summer. She is also lifeguard certified—so yes, this mermaid could save your life.

The Disneyland Hotel has been part of Disney history since 1955, but its newest chapter is very much about the future: The Villas at Disneyland Hotel, also known as the Discovery Tower. We walk you through what it's actually like to stay here using Disney Vacation Club points, from the first impression of the tower's “storytelling through color” exterior to the practical details that matter when you are planning a real trip to Disneyland Resort in Anaheim. We get specific about room types and who each one is for, including the tiny yet points efficient Duo Studio, the more versatile DVC Studio, and the One Bedroom Villas that finally bring the full kitchen, dining table, and in room washer and dryer many members expect. We also cover Two Bedroom options for larger families and the jaw dropping Three Bedroom Grand Villa setup for groups who want peak luxury. Along the way, we share the tradeoffs with views, the layout of the sprawling Disneyland Hotel campus, and why this resort can be easier than you'd think for getting to the parks and Downtown Disney on foot. Then we dig into the money and logistics: the DVC points chart ranges, the important Anaheim transient occupancy tax that is not included in this contract, and why that nightly fee can change the math for your stay. We also talk pools, cabanas, the fitness center, and our favorite dining and drink stops like Palm Breeze Bar, Trader Sam's Tiki Bar, and the broader Downtown Disney food lineup that sits just steps away. If you're considering DVC at Disneyland, thinking about renting DVC points, or just want a clear guide to the newest deluxe accommodations at Disneyland Resort, hit play, then subscribe and share the show with a Disney friend. If you like what you hear, please leave a rating and review so more Disneyland planners can find us.----Adventures & Mousecapades is a passion project from Alicea & Nathan Novak - two Seattleites addicted to The Mouse. Today, we are at the table in Techtown for a fast‑moving conversation on how Metro Detroit goes out now. We start with the closure of Mutiny Bar and ask if Detroit's modern tiki bar era has quietly ended, even as tiki continues in places like San Diego and Palm Springs. Norris shares a visit to Bastille Bar, praising it as a no‑frills "it's just a bar" hangout, while the crew argues that happy hour has effectively shifted to 3–6 p.m. thanks to changing work patterns and school pickups. Devon then delivers an ode to the hotel bar via Four Vagabonds at the Dearborn Inn, celebrating it as a hub for travelers' stories and local recommendations. We close with a debate over whether it's time to ditch third‑party delivery apps like DoorDash. Amoray Dive Resort is considered the only true dive resort in the continental US, with it's dedicated dive boat literally outside the door of some of the hotel rooms.I fell in love with this dive resort last year when I visited, so I returned a year later to interview the rest of their staff. With a fully staffed dive shop on site, gear, and even a filling station, it makes diving easy.I was asked so many times if this was “Amy Slate's place?” that I thought it was important to show the renovated room interiors, and how well-kept the place was. They retained the old Keys charm, but upgraded the interior where it counts. The boat is ideal for easy, family-oriented diving that caters to newbies, snorkelers, and shallow scuba diving. But don't be fooled, some of the best variety of shipwrecks are in the Keys and the Spiegel Grove is just offshore Key Largo, and Amoray does do dedicated trips for Advanced Divers. They offer scuba certification, dive guides, rental gear, and apparently are expanding into a live aboard catamaran option (I'll have more details on that when I return in December for the boat parade!). I should also mention they let you take bicycles and snorkel gear offsite to places like John Pennekamp State Park, and even have SUP, Kayak, Jet Skis on site. They also do magical sunset cruises, which IMHO is one of the crown jewels of the Florida Keys. But the thing that intrigued me the most about this resort was actually the staff. Just like my last interview with the owner of the dive resort (Jeff Gneiser), I am fascinated with how they can keep the vibe going with the resort AND boat staff, and this time after even more time had passed. So many places lack customer service and experience staff burnout in this industry, yet this place seemed to be the contrary. The staff seemed happy, the boat captain and mates literally sang and danced on the way back in from the dive, and everyone was in a great mood every time I spoke with them, and were actually helpful. If you just want a comfy place to stay with a genuine Keys vibe, easy diving or snorkeling, and close to the major attractions, Amoray Dive Resort is it.PS: They offered me a discount code for listeners:sweetwater25*I'm still working on that on-site Tiki Bar
