From Ikebukero to the Skytree, the walk seems endless

On episode 37, Micah and I talk about my trip back to Japan with my Nephew Bryan and his family. Tokija ir neticamo sarežģīta, starp iekštelpu un ārtelpu pastāv daudzi starpslāņi. Administratīvā vienība, ko ikdienā saucam par Tokiju, formāli ir Tokijas metropole. Tā vienlaikus ir lielpilsēta un viena no četrdesmit septiņām prefektūrām. Tokijas prefektūru jeb Tōkyō-to kodolu veido 23 speciālās pilsētas jeb municipalitātes (ku), kuras katra savukārt sastāv no mazākām pilsētām (machi), tie savukārt iedalās numurētos pilsētas rajonos (chōme). Adreses pierakstā pēc šī dalījuma seko pilsētas rajona bloka numurs un tad ēkas numurs. Bloku un ēku numerācija pilsētā bieži šķiet haotiska, jo adreses piešķirtas to reģistrēšanas kārtībā. Ja kaut kur jānokļūst Tokijā, cilvēki norādīs tuvāko metro staciju, kādu nozīmīgu ēku vai ko citu ievērības cienīgu. Tāpēc visur ir kartes, shēmas, norādes. Kartēs ziemeļi ne vienmēr ir augšā, karte novietota tā, kā stāv skatītājs. Tāpēc dzīvojot Tokijā, orientēšanās pilsētā un pašas pilsētas telpas uztvere ir atšķirīga no tā, ko esmu pieradusi redzēt Eiropā, kur pilsētu vispirms jau veido skaidrs ielu tīkls, regulārs vai neregulārs. Uz tā uzveras ēkas. Iela ir galvenā – lineāra ass. Savukārt Tokijā telpa, kas paliek pāri starp ēkām ir iela, laukums, satikšanās vieta, reizēm šaura taka, caur kuru izspraukties līdz nākamajai ēkai. Protams, ir arī ielas. Reizēm ielu nosaukumus liek to sākumā – kā vārtus ar nosaukumiem. Starp ēkām vienmēr ir atstatumi, lielāki, mazāki, šaurāki vai platāki – ugunsdrošības dēļ. Ēkas un atstatumi starp tām ir kā labirinti. Katrs pilsētas bloks ir šāds labirints, un katrai tā ēkai ir numurs. Sākumā vienmēr maldījos un zīmēju sev kartes blociņā, ja bija kur jānokļūst, sevišķi, ja bija jānokļūst kāda labirinta centrā. Daudzviet zemesgabali ir sadalīti iespējami mazi – zemes dārdzības dēļ. I've been in hailstorms, I've been in big hailstorms, I've been in sleet, you name it. But that was the first time I've been in like a snowball storm. So these like, they seem like you, you send me a quick clip of it, but it seemed like they were falling faster. I mean, were they icy? Like did you catch any in your hand? Like what, what, what was the consistency here? They were soft and fluffy, like, like a little meat, like a little soft. So they're just big. They're just big snowflakes. Then. Yeah. Well, no, Nope, Nope. You know what? Snowflake has those crystal line edges, so it has this definitive shape, right? So it looks like it's, it looks like a snowflake, but this has been balled up. So it looked like, yeah. Well, it looked like a snowflake that had kind of melt with other snowflakes, but didn't get hard. Like hail. What are you in a hailstorm like you, Kansas? Those hailstones could be quarter inch, half inch, one inch or larger diameter. Uh, this is even a much smaller and fluffy. Well. Speaking of hail, when you were living in Wichita, did you ever have your car get just like destroyed by hail is damaged by it? Well, everybody in your car, right? Just covered in like little dents. I've just like ruined it. Not little dance. Big dense. They had big Hills. Yeah. Breaking windshield, kind of hailstorms in Kansas. When we knew hailstone for coming, we would everybody scramble and get the heck out of work wherever and get the cars inside. Uh, I've, I've seen cars nearly destroyed and it's sort of a badge of honor a little bit, so people would keep the car. Sometimes the guys where I used to work used to keep the beat up trucks like that to show all the stores that have been through it. It's crazy how big the hailstones can get there because of the way the thunderstorms are huge and it just recycles the ice up and down, up and down. It just gets bigger and bigger and bigger, and the storm that eventually falls out of the sky and hits your car. Oh yeah. It's crazy. Well, you don't, you don't have that kind of where to live there in Maryland, did ya? You're not like that. Uh, I've seen hail a handful of times in my life, I think more in Maryland than I did in, uh, in, in Illinois, my decade in Illinois. But, so I've seen hail a couple of times, but it's been very few and far between. Yeah. Wow. Okay.

Research on lightning has begun at Tokyo Skytree, which was completed in May 2012. A Rogowski coil, installed 497 meters above the ground, will be used to measure rare waveforms of lightning current. As society has become more IT-oriented in recent years, computers and other electronic devices have become more susceptible to lightning damage. To develop effective lightning-resistant designs, the world is waiting for research that will reveal the true form of lightning.

Day 25 - Le Japon, le pays de Hello Kitty

We're back from Japan! (Actually, we've been back for almost two months already. But we haven't been able to record until now, so...) We're back from Japan! We've fallen hard for the combinis (convenience stores, like 7-11 and Family Mart). We have a renewed obsession with onigiri. And we miss Japan like crazy now that we're back!!! So what did we do in Japan? Well, on the first day we were both there (Allison arrived a few days before Rachael did), we all went and visited the Tokyo Skytree. And by visited, we mean stood around and looked up at it. When we were there, you had to have a reservation to get up into the Skytree, because it's only a few months old. So instead we got curry pastries. And while we were sitting around eating, met some very interesting people! The next day, we all rented a car, and off to Mt. Fuji we all went. (Mr. Fuji drove.) We got to check out a Japanese rest stop, which is ridiculous compared to what we're used to in the US. It's got an entire food court! Then around and around and around, up Mt. Fuji. Though it was quite warm in Tokyo, it was freezing cold and incredibly windy and rainy up the mountain, so we unfortunately didn't get to spend much time there before sprinting back to the car. But it was totally worth it for the little udon restaurant we found at the base of the mountain. The noodles were handmade - to die for. And the only meat available? Horsemeat! And then, like any normal traveler would do in a foreign country, we went to Costco. Seriously. We went to Costco. Which was one heck of a freaky experience in itself. You walk in, and it looks exactly like every single Costco you ever see in the US. But then they have some different things - like all sorts of different types of sashimi-grade seafood. Fish, fish eggs, uni, seaweed... we're seriously jealous. However, the real reason we were there? Rachael has been tempting the rest of us with Hokkaido Milk Soft Cream ever since we started this podcast, so Allison couldn't pass up an opportunity to try some. So worth it! We're having a contest!
