On this week's episode of Unclear and Present Danger, Jamelle and John are joined by Vinson Cunningham of the New Yorker to discuss Bulworth, the 1998 black comedy (no pun intended) written, directed by and starring Warren Beatty. After working through their initial shock at the sheer weirdness of the film, Jamelle, John and Vinson explore its politics, its vision of American society, its critique of American media and the fact that the character of Bulworth is, himself, highly prescient. They also explore the strange racial politics of the film, as well as the extent to which it stands as a kind of modern parable.This is a strange film folks! And we had a great time discussing it.On our next episode, we will discuss Roland Emmerich's 1998 disaster thriller Godzilla, something of a misbegotten attempt to Americanize the storied franchise. But there is a lot to talk about and we are looking forward to doing so.

I first met him while filming someone in Scott De Tamble's office in the book IT'S A WONDERFUL AFTERLIFE, then he makes an appearance in the book HACKING THE AFTERLIFE. Then he started showing up on our podcast introducing himself as FIVE. "The Master Librarian" - at first he seemed busy and uninterested in our podcast. Since then, no other way to put it, he seems to like to stop by. Prince stopped by again - and we noted that it was twice in two weeks. He wanted to talk about Prince Day - a celebration on his birthday - which neither Jennifer nor I had ever heard of. I looked it up during the podcast and apparently it is a thing with people celebrating the Minneapolis native wearing purple and playing his tunes. A general discussion ensued about Warren Beatty who is still every much on the planet, but is "already hanging out with his friends on the flipside." It sounds confusing but it's simply that we "bring only a portion of our conscious energy to our lifetime" and as we get older, and we need less conscious energy - the more we can hang out with our pals. As noted, during my interview with Jack Tracey, a friend's dad who I verified details about prior to the session - he was in hospice care in Arizona with Alzheimers. However he was happy to describe what's going on - he said "90% of his conscious energy is already offstage."  He said the ten percent he's left in the hospital was like leaving a leg in the pool. I knew Jack well - he had many homes with pools.  Elvis stopped by as well, we asked him some questions about his journey (he was with his daughter and grandson) and he was happy to weigh in on Baz Luhrmann's new film.  Happy Prince Day!

The two break down Warren Beatty's 1998 political satire Bulworth, which Beatty wrote, directed, and starred in opposite Halle Berry, Oliver Platt, Don Cheadle, Isaiah Washington, and a nearly silent Sean Astin. Josh argues the film sits on a fascinating cultural crux point. He thinks 1998 was the pivot year when Hollywood shifted toward heavy programming, citing The Truman Show, Deep Impact, Armageddon, and The Siege all landing in the same window. The guys dig into Bulworth's opening confession that political assassinations are just a normal Tuesday for a senator with a fixer on speed dial, the eerie parallel between Bulworth dropping the mask once he had a hit out on himself and the way Trump later dispensed with the political pretense entirely, and Aaron Sorkin's fingerprints on the worst Halle Berry monologues about NAFTA and manufacturing. They also wander through the rise of West Coast rap as a marketing tool aimed at young kids, Public Enemy's 1994 song calling out a fake World Health Organization pandemic, the hierarchy of corporate political influence, and the difference between memory and story.

On this week's episode of Unclear and Present Danger, Jamelle and John watch the 1998 Lifetime film Oklahoma City: A Survivor's Story, starring Kathy Baker as Priscilla Salyers, a real-life U.S. Customs employee who survived the 1995 bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building. The film follows the attack, Salyers's rescue, and her subsequent struggle with PTSD, as well as the way the tragedy shapes her family life (it is a Lifetime film after all). Notably, the movie avoids the political context of the attack, saying very little about Timothy McVeigh's motivations or the broader world of right-wing extremism from which he emerged.That absence turns out to be pretty fruitful for the discussion. Jamelle and John use the film as a window into how the Oklahoma City bombing was being processed — and not processed — in the late 1990s, and trace how the political meaning of the attack was fought over in the moment. Bulworth is a 1998 American political satire black comedy film co-written, co-produced, directed by, and starring Warren Beatty. It co-stars Halle Berry, Oliver Platt, Don Cheadle, Paul Sorvino, Jack Warden, and Isaiah Washington. The film follows the title character, California Senator Jay Billington Bulworth (Beatty), as he runs for re-election while trying to avoid a hired assassin. The film received generally positive reviews and a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay yet narrowly failed to break even on a $30 million budget. However, Beatty was praised for tackling race, poverty, dysfunction in the health care system, and corporate control of the political agenda, with eminent legal scholar Patricia J. It's Awards Season yet again. Here on the Holmes Movies Podcast that means, it is time for the Alternative Oscars episodes! The event celebrated all the films released in the year of 1978. The event was held at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles, California on April 9th 1979. The host was the legendary Johnny Carson.It was a bittersweet ceremony as it was the last public ceremony of The Duke himself John Wayne, who would pass away a few months later from cancer. He was there to announce and give the award for Best Picture. It was also the year when Laurence Olivier was awarded with an Honorary Oscar for his achievements and contribution to screen acting and the art of film. The 51st Academy Awards was the ceremony where Michael Cimino's film The Deer Hunter won big. It was awarded Best Picture and Best Director along with Best Supporting Actor for Christopher Walken. Along with Heaven Can Wait from Warren Beatty and Buck Henry, The Deer Hunter got the most nominations. Did The Deer Hunter deserve Best Picture? Devin & James are back in the Den one more time in 2025 for our final 50th Anniversary celebration of the films of 1975! This time we focus on the ODDBALL MOVIES of '75, those that are too wild or weird to easily fit into the other categories in our series. We begin with a couple of moody films written by Thomas McGuaine: Stoner cowboys Jeff Bridges & Sam Waterston rustle cattle in RANCHO DELUXE, and then Peter Fonda & Warren Oates have very violent conversations about fishing in 92 IN THE SHADE. Both films also feature amazing performances by Harry Dean Stanton and Joe Spinell. We lighten the mood a bit with Michael Ritchie's underrated slice-of-life beauty pageant comedy SMILE, with fantastic performances by Bruce Dern, Annette O'Toole, and many others. We finish up our celebration with a couple of very dark Los Angeles Depression-era period pieces: Mike Nichols' THE FORTUNE, a pitch-black screwball comedy featuring Jack Nicholson, Warren Beatty, and Stockard Channing in a murdurous love triangle, and John Schlesinger's brutal poison pen letter to old Hollywood, THE DAY OF THE LOCUST, showcasing the never-better Karen Black, the never-creepier Donald Sutherland, and a rare major role by William Atherton. Throw in a lot more offbeat appearances by the likes of Slim Pickens, Burgess Meredith, William Hickey, Billy Barty, Margot Kidder, and Geoffrey Lewis, and you end up with one of the most interesting rosters of character actors we've ever discussed in one episode! These films don't all turn out to be masterpieces (most of them don't), but they are all huge creative swings that stand out from the crowd during an era known for big swings, and that's saying something. By doing this, Beatty created a smash hit comedy that reigns supreme as the definitive adaptation of Segal's play, even if it also has some problems within the third act. Ryan and Jay break down their thoughts on the film, thoughts on Beatty, the flaws of this material, why the film's central romance doesn't work, the comedic genius that is Charles Grodin, and Jay reveals something about Beatty that will set up a very interesting theory the boys will be exploring over the next few weeks about Beatty the movie star turned director. Hal Ashby was right in the middle of an incredible run when Shampoo came out in the mid-'70s. He made a few bonafide classics amongst his 7 films that were released that decade. This isn't his funniest work though. In fact, typical for this director, the laughs are sometimes explosive, but they're spaced out. This is in fact generally a sad film...especially considering how much casual carnality is going on. It's a film about sex and politics during the 3 days leading into and then following Nixon's win in the 1968 presidential election.
