This week, we're busting out the slammer and potentially wishing we were back in it depending on who you ask, as we team up with the canary-clad copper to take down a star-studded mob in a wildly stylish and outlandishly conceived blockbuster starring a charming old man incapable of doing action scenes, that's been seemingly buried in the Disney vault in the years since. It's 1990's Dick Tracy, directed and produced by Warren Beatty, and starring Beatty, Madonna, Al Pacino, Glenne Headly, Charlie Korsmo, Mandy Patinkin, Dustin Hoffman, Seymour Cassel, William Forsythe, Charles Durning, Dick Van Dyke, Paul Sorvino, James Caan, Kathy Bates and Catherine O'Hara. Most of these stars are unrecognizeable under the monstrous makeup required to make them look like their vintage crime comic strip counterparts, but Pacino made enough of an impression with a wildly comedic take on his typical mobster persona that he netted an Oscar nom for Best Supporting Actor, losing to Joe Pesci for GoodFellas. While Beatty is at least a decade too old to be proper fit as the movie's lead, it's his ambition behind the camera that makes the movie such a curiosity all these years later, as the film is either an enchanting dreamscape filled with unsolvable How Did They Do That movie magic puzzles, or a steaming pile of neon-drenched puke depending on which of our two hosts you ask. But that's okay, as we have some heated disagreement this week that is maybe the closest we've yet come to vintage Siskel & Ebert kinda stuff. Plus: We've both been to the theater and are happy to sound off on Ryan Coogler's latest as JMo and Hayley both greatly enjoyed Sinners in the cinema, and Justin's got a bonus theatrical field report on Drop, the latest from Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon. If you'd like to watch Dick Tracy before listening along to our conversation, good luck finding a physical copy, and Disney will seemingly never stream this thing on Disney+ -- possibly for rights reasons to avoid paying anything more to Warren Beatty, or possibly because they are cowards who are ashamed of the fun movie they made. Either way, it's tough to find outside of renting it on YouTube. He reminisces about a lunch meeting with actor and filmmaker Warren Beatty, recounts a case of mistaken identity involving actor and director Clint Eastwood, discusses his friendship with actor Johnny Depp, and recalls a dinner with filmmaker Oliver Stone and President Donald Trump.

As a cameraman during World War II, George Stevens shot footage of the liberation of Dachau that showed the world the horrors of the Holocaust – and scarred Stevens himself for life. Pre-war, he had been a director of frothy comedies; post-war, he committed himself to making epic films about “moral disasters.” This yielded a number of masterpieces – A Place in the Sun, Giant, Shane – but by the mid-60s, though more in demand than ever as a director, Stevens felt he lost touch with the audience. He only released one film in the 1960s, The Greatest Story Ever Told – an epic about Jesus, and an epic flop – and then, in an attempt to come full circle to his comedy roots, concluded his career with The Only Game in Town (1970), an awkward mashup of old and new featuring the two biggest transitional stars of the day, Warren Beatty and Elizabeth Taylor. Another fun podcast - this one on the morning of the Oscars. I had been sensing that Gene Hackman wanted to talk to us - whether accurate or not, but there were a number of folks that I know that he knew, and I did spend a day with him in Santa Fe. That being said, Robert Towne comes forward to talk about the film "Anora" - (Jennifer hears it as "Aurora" at first) I don't know if Robert was telling us who was going to win the Oscars a few hours later - but he does mention it first off. Then I asked Luana if this person who passed the past week wanted to come and speak to us - and he said that it was Robert Towne who greeted him and invited him to this conversation. Robert was the "ghost writer" on the film Bonnie and Clyde, long time collaborator with Warren Beatty. (Shampoo)  I asked Gene if he wanted to talk about his passing - it's important to report that there's been no decided upon manner of passing - and it wasn't me or Jennifer who talked about "carbon monoxide" but that's what she got. He said it wasn't foul play, but something that happened.  He said since he believed in afterlife, it wasn't surprising for him to see his friends - but he describes the beauty of that in details. He talks about a number of people that he saw, including our frequent guest Jimi Hendrix. We've asked Jimi about this in the past - he has said repeatedly that it's a role he likes to play because everyone recognizes him, even if they didn't know him.  I asked if he was playing a song and asked if it might have been "Blue Suede Shoes" then reminded Jennifer we've heard multiple folks report hearing him playing that song (he recorded it in 1970). Gene was an accomplished artists, and I asked him about art on the flipside, and he said it was like music.  He spoke of seeing Mozart - and I asked him a couple of questions. (He had shown up in a guided meditation the day before with a Viennese woman).  We've been doing these conversations with people offstage for ten years, so apologies to those who are offended my laughing about things that he's saying - if one goes back over the past four years, they'll find many of our podcasts where we interviewed friends of Gene's on the other side. Including Gene Wilder, including Robin Williams, Robert Towne multiple times, Fred Roos and others that Gene Hackman worked with and was friends with - including Harry Dean Stanton. It just so happened that our podcast got delayed until today - it wasn't planned to happen this way - but when the Oscars ran their memorial, there are a number of people listed who we've interviewed on our podcast. Thanks again to Gene and condolences to his family - and friends - but I recommend taking the time to just ask him questions. He says it in the podcast when asked "How do people reach out to you?" He says "Just ask, but believe it's possible to hear a reply." By the way, the friend whose father I asked about the poem, said he didn't think it was accurate... that happens; Jennifer interprets what she's getting to the best of her ability.  But as we hear on the podcast it does help if the folks trying to access them allow for the possibility they still exist.

The insured claims  electrical damage to his refrigerator, toaster, and TV.   Notable Timestamps [ 00:20 ] - The adjuster sees the insured had a standard ISO HO 00 03 05 11. Is there coverage for these household items under that form? [ 01:35 ] - Trivia time! This 1967 American film starring Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway follows the exploits of bank robbers in the Depression-Era South. [ 03:00 ] - Coverage A generally applies, in part, to electronics permanently attached to the realty-- if you turned the house upside-down and shook it, what would NOT fall out? [ 04:36 ] - Coverage A or Coverage C factors: 1. actual physical annexation to the property, 2. application or adaptation to the use or purpose to which the realty is devoted, and 3. intention (or lack thereof) to make it a permanent installation. [ 10:30 ] - Proximate cause analysis would apply to this complex chain of causation, but most adjusters would likely give the insured the benefit of the doubt if any named peril played a meaningful role in bringing about the loss. [ 11:00 ] - Malicious mischief? It's a consideration, but sorry Mike, there are other intervening causes here. [ 12:05 ] - Going through the options, several named perils might apply: Artificially Generated Electrical Current, Falling Objects, or Vehicles. [ 13:00 ] - Sudden and Accidental Damage from Artificially Generated Electrical Current sounds like it should apply, but the text says it does not apply to objects with electronic components. [ 14:18 ] - The Vehicles peril just says "vehicles." [ 15:00 ] - If the insured is driving, you might run into an intentional loss exclusion issue, and innocent co-insured concerns. [ 16:00 ] - The insured can get paid for the tree, even though the list of perils is shorter for that particular coverage, because the loss was caused by a vehicle not owned or operated by a resident.
