In this episode, we brought in two exceptional guests that are no stranger to chaos. In fact, they've identified ways to engineer for chaos. In the studio, we have Aaron Rinehart, CTO, and founder at Verica. We also have Jamie Dicken, former manager of applied security at Cardinal Health and current director at Resilience. These two are also authors of Security Chaos Engineering. If you haven't read that book it's already out, you should check it out.  Chaos engineering is the technique of introducing turbulent conditions into a distributed system to try to determine the conditions that cause it to fail before it actually fails. So they simplify it. What we do with chaos engineering is learn about the system without experiencing the pain of an outage or an incident. You learn to trust your gear by testing. The biggest impact really came once we understood how security chaos engineering fits into the bigger security picture. It's not about just being a part of the latest and greatest techniques and having the excitement of doing something that's cutting edge, but security chaos engineering at the end of the day. It's useless unless what you've learned drives change.    Key Takeaways: 0:00 Previously on the show 1:40 Aaron Rinehart and Jamie Dixon introduction  2:08 Episode begins 2:59 What Jamie and Aaron are doing today 3:13 What Jamie is doing 4:13 What Aaron is doing 5:00 Discuss chaos engineering 9:26 Importance of chaos engineering 10:16 Myths of chaos engineering 12:55 Chaos engineering customer impacts 17:34 Learning to trust the test and end result 19:03 Reader and customer feedback 22:21 Chaos engineering gone wrong 27:39 Implementing change in cybersecurity 28:11 Building a team of experts 39:08 Getting involved in chaos engineering  41:09 Tools for listeners 43:25 Keeping up with Aaron and Jamie     Aaron Rinehart on Twitter aaron@verica.io Jamie Dicken on Twitter Verica on LinkedIn Verica Free Book  Learn more about Hacker Valley Studio Support Hacker Valley Studio on Patreon Follow Hacker Valley Studio on Twitter Follow Ron Eddings on Twitter Follow Chris Cochran on Twitter Sponsored by Axonius

When I tell people what we eat, their first response is... "That sounds pretty restricted!" After which I ask them what they had for breakfast today? "Cereal." And the day prior? "Cereal." How about for the foreseeable future? "Cereal." You get the idea. Most people are already eating a fairly restricted diet, only with poor food choices! So, what the heck do we, at Life By Design, eat ourselves? On today's episode of Life By Design we cover that question and answer a few more. What We Cover How many different food types will you find in an A+ diet? Why Mike's (yes I said Mike, he made a return to the show) situation may be unique and what you can still learn from it. Most people know "what" to eat but still fail to follow guidelines...why? What Jamie eats. What Mike eats.

Q Let’s talk about your Insta-life before.  The learning curve was huge, but we wanted to cast our net wider and use Instagram as the launching pad.  But we had zero idea how.  I played around with format and branding and if you view our IG from the beginning, what you’ll find is an entire page of just a bunch of quotes.  From the beginning we wanted authentic followers so we were fine with slow and steady, but it was realllyyyy slow.   Q. That’s something I always mention - growth may be slow when you’re building meaningful connections.  But what kind of engagement did you have during the days of those golden nugget quotes? A. We got some likes but it was rare to get comments.  I didn’t know at that time it was important to engage with people.   Q. Did you find that discouraging or were you wondering if you were on the wrong platform?  What made you decide that maybe you needed help? A. I wouldn’t call it discouraging, just frustrating putting out great stuff that we know works and it felt like we were spinning wheels.  I was constantly creating content and it was a lot of work with little results.   Q. When you put all that time into it and you know your content is good, you wonder what you’re missing.  What was the key point or time trigger that made you take action to get help? A.  I listened to podcasts and started being open to new ideas and knew I needed to invest in learning.  Instagram was always intimidating to me.  But I started watching you and stepped out and took your story challenge.  I remember it blew my mind when you taught us how to change our color page.  It opened up a whole new world.   Q.  What Jamie is talking about is something we referred to in Episode 4 with Cathy Lawdanski - my 7-Day Instagram Story Challenge.  There’s a whole new world out there on IG once you add the video aspect and the challenge makes it easy and fun to learn. A. Yes I was loving all the new things on Instagram with stories.  And the thing with Instagram is it’s scary to put your stuff out there so that kept me from doing it for so long but in talking with you saying just do it, those little baby steps taught me it was ok and I was relatable.    Q. You can delete your stories if you want but you can become so anal that you become frozen and don’t take acgtion.  I think after that you joined my Instagram pro membership...

Today you’re going to hear a conversation I had with an Accelerator Mastermind student, and brilliant entrepreneur, Jamie Sears. Jamie creates resources, training and courses for teachers, as well as teacher entrepreneurs, and she’s learned so many valuable lessons of the past few years that I knew I had to bring her on the podcast to share them with you. Jamie reveals how she turned a hobby into a super successful business, and the mindset shifts she had to make along the way that contributed to her doing this. We look at how she has completely changed the way she thinks about paid advertising, the way she grew her email list from 6,000 to 36,000 people over the course of just one single summer, her process for creating content, and so much more. Jamie is a great example of someone who has committed to doing what’s hard in business, and not just the easy stuff, and it’s really paid off and allowed her to stand out in her niche. I really think you’re going to get a lot out of this talk I had with Jamie! As you’ve been hearing about on this podcast recently, Brandon Lucero’s 6-part video series is now live!  It’s called The Content Revolution, and it’s not only helpful, and informative, but it’s actionable! On the Show Today You’ll Learn: What Jamie offers her audience, and the motivation behind it all The beginnings as a hobby, and how she realized it could be a viable business The way her mindset around paid advertising has changed – and why it’s something she can’t afford not to do What Jamie did to make email marketing work for her when she created her first mini-course Why she says that 2018 became the “Year of Content” (and what this looked like for her) How Jamie has built a business around her life, and the role that getting more support and investing in a team has played in this And more!

Oh Crap I Love My Toddler... But Holy F*ck

Jamie’s addressing one of the most frequently asked questions listeners and followers have for her: how does she balance everything and keep her life in order, especially as a single mom? Her answer is simple and two-fold: 1. it’s HARD, and 2. it’s a fool’s game to try to do everything at once. The parental balancing act is an art of setting a schedule and picking your battles.   In this episode, Jamie explains how our phones can dominate our already busy schedules if we’re not careful, debunks the myth of multitasking, and compares keeping our life in balance to, of all things, four pots on a stove. The Finer Details of This Episode:   What’s “uh-huh” parenting and why we absolutely need to avoid it. Establishing consistent phone time for yourself and being honest with your children about when you’ll need to do some scrolling. How airplane mode has become Jamie’s best friend. Why Jamie isn’t a fan of multitasking—and in fact has some pretty harsh things to say about it. What Jamie’s past experience as a circus performer—yes, you heard that right—taught her about maintaining balance. Jamie’s “four-burner stove” theory for keeping all of the major elements of your life in check. In the end, remember that even the people who look like they have all their shit together still struggle with balancing it all. Quotes:   “Stop with the half-assed parenting. It’s not fair to our kids!”   “You can’t do everything well if you’re trying to do it all together.”   “Balance is a verb. It is not a noun, it is not a destination.”   “You HAVE to show up as a whole person to be a good parent.” Links:   Jamie’s homepage - http://www.jamieglowacki.com/     Oh Crap! Gary Pinkerton talks with Retired Air Force Lt Col Jaime Parent, author of Moving Past PTSD: Consciousness, Understanding, and Appreciation for Military Veterans and Their Families, about the issue of PTSD in today's society and how we deal with it. PTSD has been around since the dawn of violence in society, and recently we've started taking it more seriously and helping those who suffer. Unfortunately we still haven't reached the point where we're doing enough, and Jaime has some ideas of what we can do to be better. Key Takeaways: [3:08] What Jamie did prior to joining the Air Force [7:22] Veterans need more than just a job when they get out of service, they need a sense of service and purpose [9:03] Why former military members make good employees [13:54] We need to look at the types of jobs we're making available to veterans, because many of them have no interest in desk jobs [15:59] The history of how society has dealt with PTSD (and the other names we've given it) [19:22] A secret to hiring veterans [24:20] When designing your resume, make sure that you describe your abilities, not just put a bunch of acronyms Website: Moving Past PTSD: Consciousness, Understanding, and Appreciation for Military Veterans and Their Families Jaime Parent on LinkedIn

Oh Crap I Love My Toddler... But Holy F*ck

It’s possible for parental expectations to be too high AND too low. You’ll have some parents keen on getting their little ones to read and write before they’re even in kindergarten while insisting they’re not yet emotionally able to comprehend big changes like moving homes. Social media plays a big role in perpetrating unrealistic expectations, with sponsored ads on Facebook and other platforms skewing these expectations even further. In the end, what your toddler can or cannot do most often boils down to what they have the cognitive capacity for—again, their little brains are still developing! In this episode, Jamie lays out the difficult truth about tantrums, breaks down what your little one may or may not be capable of doing at their age, and gets real about the unfortunate aspect of parenting you’re just going to have to come to terms with. The Finer Details of This Episode:   Are you expecting your kid to listen the first time you tell them to do something? That’s expecting way too much for their age. There’s no way to really talk your kid out of a tantrum once they’ve already built up enough steam; you’re going to have to accept it and ride it out. Your little one has only started to grasp basic concepts like “object permanence;” logic isn’t going to work on them. You can use “emotion charts” to help your child understand the complex emotions they’re beginning to feel, but understand they really don’t have the ability to control their emotions. Individuation: the important psychological development that explains why your toddler doesn’t care what you think about how they’re acting. Parenting can just suck at this age, and accepting that is essential for parenting well. It’s important to set boundaries, but even more important to understand that your little one will work their hardest to test those boundaries. Just as it’s possible to start kids on certain skills too early, it can be too late to get them potty-trained—or at least too late to get them potty-trained without massive resistance. What Jamie learned from witnessing a ritual dance by a local native tribe. A list of skills and techniques you can expect your toddler to have a handle on. Your kid is way more capable of handling serious discussion than you may think.   Quotes: “There is no way to stop a tantrum mid-tantrum.” “Shame is huge and our children can’t handle it.” “Nobody has it all together, and if they do, I dunno, they’re living a very inauthentic life.” “Don’t have this expectation that the whole world is doing it well and you’re not. Everybody’s having a hard time.” “We hold [the boundary] so that the child can learn.” “We expect these kids to be so compliant and yet we also underestimate them at every single turn.” “If there’s a pink elephant in your house, I can assure you that your child has noticed it.”   Links: Jamie’s homepage - http://www.jamieglowacki.com/  Oh Crap! Oh Crap I Love My Toddler... But Holy F*ck

The last few episodes of Oh Crap! haven’t been as upbeat as Jamie’s usual output, but it’s important to address the more serious side of introducing your children to the world and dealing with the not-as-fun aspects of parenthood. To conclude this series, Jamie is looking at how mental health affects our parenting, specifically focusing on anxiety. We all need to discuss mental health in a serious and proactive way, while still giving one another the love and encouragement we all deserve. In this episode, Jamie discusses the different forms of anxiety, explains how you can begin to treat each kind, and gives you permission to not go to that big event you’ve been dreading.   The Finer Details of This Episode: Looking at how we frame mental health in casual discussion and why it can help to not speak as lightly about it. Why Jamie’s brand of self-care can come off as “brutal.” What are the different types of anxiety and how do they each manifest? The reason cutting out sugar intake can massively and positively improve your general level of calm. Magnesium: not just for electronics anymore! How a little bit of liver (and several B vitamins) can go a long way. Be a happy flower and absorb some sun! Vitamin D is essential to keeping you feeling fresh and energized. You don’t have to go to that big event! If you do, both you and your little ones will feel drained and on edge by the end. It’s okay to taper off hangouts with a friend you know is leaving you feeling worn down. Realize that social media and YouTube algorithms are designed to throw upsetting and misery-inducing content in your face; seek out some happier stories for a change! What Jamie does—and you yourself can do—to get through an anxious episode with your wits intact. Why you shouldn’t be afraid of medication, especially if you need it. Medication doesn’t have to be forever, but they can be a helpful guide for when they’re a necessity. Make your mental health one of the first things you address in your day. Quotes: “For me, self-care is about mental health.” “A lot of what we know is not set in stone, and this goes for nutritional research.” “If you don’t feel good all the time it’s worth doing your own research to figure out why.” “You are not showing up fully as a parent if you are suffering from anxiety, depression or other mental health issues.” “If your family’s toxic, you have every right to cut them off.” “Don’t throw yourself under the bus for someone else.” “Stop looking for the bad; look for the good.” “We have to confront what our anxieties are so we can keep our kids safe.” Links:   Jamie’s homepage - http://www.jamieglowacki.com/  Oh Crap! This episode of the Retirement Answer man is filled with some debt-crunching, retirement building, volatile market enduring advice to help you put your financial life in order. The feature segment of the show features the story of Jamie and Ruth, a couple who paid off over $83,000 in debt in just over 30 months. 30 MONTHS! It’s a testimony to what a unified goal and lots of hard work can do. You’ll hear Jamie’s account of how that one decision has changed the course of their lives and set them up to have a greater vision for their future! What should you do when the markets are so volatile?   The recent roller coaster that has been the S&P 500 has a lot of people in a conundrum. Do you change your retirement plan when the markets fluctuate so much, or do you stay the course? Roger Whitney says you have to keep your overall strategy in mind when making any decisions during volatile times. If your goal is to set aside money for retirement, you should be very slow to make changes in your strategy because of a temporary spate of volatility. The long term historical averages show that your investments are more than likely going to be alright by the time you retire. Find out a couple of other tips Roger has for you in this episode of The Retirement Answer Man.   When it comes to retirement and financial planning it’s so tempting to feel like you don’t measure up.   Think about it. We’ve all made those bad financial decisions. None of us has done everything we could have to save up for our retirement. What do you do when you realize that you haven’t measured up to the ideal you held out for yourself. Roger Whitney advises that you’ve got to come to grips with the truth that you are enough. What you’ve been able to do is enough. You can’t go back and change things. All you can do is to make changes moving forward, and you can do that, because you are enough. Hear more of Roger’s thoughts on this episode.   30 months to pay off $80,000 in debt. An amazing story!   When Jamie and Ruth made the decision to do everything they could to pay off their debt as fast as possible, Jamie didn’t even have a job. He’d been laid off and they didn’t really know how they were going to be able to accomplish such a crazy goal. But they were determined. Throughout the 3 years they worked to pay down their debt, Roger took all kinds of extra and radom jobs, and their income actually went up! They hammered away at their debt until they were able to pay it off. Now their future is different and their attitudes about life and what they can do in the near future to make the world a better place has grown. Hear their story as Jamie tells it, on this episode of The Retirement Answer Man.   Coming in October 2015: Group coaching based around the question, “When can I realistically retire and what will it look like?”   Roger is super excited to announce that coming up next month he’ll be starting some group coaching relationships to help you develop a plan for your retirement that is practical, simple, and doable.
