➡ CLICK HERE to send me a text, I'd love to hear what you thought about this episode! Leave your name in the text so I know who it's from! A few weeks ago, Thekla Brumder Ross and I hosted a live panel with last week's guest, Kat Zilka, Founder and Executive Director of Dis/Connect, and two of the high schoolers who are a part of the Dis/Connect movement. It was eye-opening, to say the very least! Today on the podcast, Thekla and I breakdown our three most inspirational takeaways from this conversation. You need not have been present to understand the profundity of what the students had to teach us. Plus, we catch up on what has been happening since our deep dive on attention last May and some exciting news in Thekla's world. (cough, cough, BOOK DEAL, cough, cough, COMING SOON!) Hear more about what this is about and when you can expect to see it on shelves near you! And if you are inspired to reach out to Thekla to connect or share a personal story with her that *could* be included in her book, you can find her on LinkedIn. Also - I would love love LOVE to hear tiny steps YOU'VE been taking (if you have) to notice your own screen time use, or to check yourself, or to keep yourself accountable. I hope to have a short and sweet episode sharing fun ideas we can ALL try to be more present and connected with ourselves! Would you leave me a voice memo HERE? Welcome, writers and book lovers. The Bleeders is a podcast about book writing and publishing. Make sure you subscribe to the companion Substack: https://thebleeders.substack.com/welcomeToday's guest is Courtney Maum—novelist, memoirist, and author of Before and After the Book Deal—and she talks candidly about the reality of a writing career, the myth of the breakout book, and why longevity matters more than literary hype.In this episode, Courtney breaks down what publishing actually looks like across every lane: Big Five launches with national tours, indie presses that nurture your inner “art witch,” and self-publishing born out of necessity. She shares the story behind the book that almost never happened—and how the lowest advance of her career became the one that defined her platform—plus why the industry now expects authors to function as marketers, publicists, event planners, and content creators all at once.We also discuss building an audience in the newsletter era, the limits of social media, and why “a thousand true fans” is a better goal than virality. Courtney explains how writers can protect their mental health in a system built on comparison, what's actually changed since 2020 (AI, proposals, platform pressure), and why readers—not gatekeepers—ultimately determine a book's shelf life. This conversation is essential listening for any writer trying to build a sustainable creative career in today's publishing landscape.Preorder Courtney Maum's latest book Alan Opts Out and preorder Courtney Kocak's debut memoir Girl Gone Wild.Subscribe to Courtney Maum's Substack Before & After The Book Deal. In this raw, unfiltered conversation, Pimpin Ken, a former high-level pimp from Chicago and Milwaukee, breaks down the psychology, power dynamics, and realities of the pimping game during its peak in the 1970s–1990s. Ken speaks candidly about how he entered the life as a teenager, the culture of pimping that existed at the time, and how manipulation, control, and desensitization became central to survival. He explains the difference between street-level track work and higher-end strip club and VIP hustles, detailing how money was really made — and why most people misunderstand the game entirely. This interview also dives deep into: -The psychology behind control, power, and influence -How pimping was normalized in certain eras and communities -The role of trauma, abandonment, and emotional conditioning -Why he avoided violence and relied on manipulation instead -The evolution from street hustling to sophisticated financial setups -His thoughts on relationships, marriage, masculinity, and power -How prison, reading, and reflection changed his perspective This is not a glamorization — it's a firsthand account of a brutal system, told by someone who lived it and survived it. If you're done blending in and you know you're ready to be the woman on the stage (not just in the audience), this episode is for you. In this conversation, I'm joined by my creative director, Stephanie West, to talk about our 2026 retreats + Movement Makers Mastermind — and why this experience is for the woman who's already good at what she does… but is so ready to be seen as the leader she truly is. We jam on what it really takes to go from “I have a brand and I'm making money” → to “People are asking me to speak. My podcast is growing. My content converts. I'm recognized as the go-to in my industry.” If you've been sitting on the sidelines, watching everyone else get the invitations, this episode will give you a clear picture of: who these retreats are for what actually happens during the weekend (and all year long) and why content + tapping together are the thing that finally gets you out of your own way. IN THIS EPISODE, WE TALK ABOUT: Who the 2026 retreats are really forWomen who already have a business and a brand, have seen success, but feel like they're still getting overlooked and blending into the online space. Going from “good” to ICONICWhy “I'm talented and I help people” isn't enough anymore — and what has to shift in your branding, content, and energy to become the woman people ask to speak, feature, and collaborate with. Stages, podcasts, books & movementsHow we're building an ecosystem around your brand so you're not just posting pretty content, you're getting booked on stages, growing your podcast, and selling your offers and books. What actually happens at the retreatsContent days with Stephanie behind the camera, me tapping you through the visibility fears, storytelling, messaging, and creating enough high-quality content to last you months — plus support all year long to actually use it. Why generic content advice isn't working anymoreThe difference between “inspirational” content and leader content that converts followers into buyers and positions you as the person people go to. Collapsing timelines with supportHow weekly content calls, custom content maps, and tapping through resistance together turn “someday I'll host an event / write a book / grow a podcast” into concrete dates and sold-out rooms. The power of tapping + creative direction togetherWhy so many people invest in photo/video shoots and then never post the content — and how we're solving that by pairing strategy + nervous system work so you feel safe to be seen. RETREAT DATES (2026) Feb 27 – March 2 — Kelowna June 12 – 14 — TBD Oct 16 – 19 — Banff / Canadian Rockies These retreats are part of our Movement Makers Mastermind — a space for women who are ready to build legacies, movements, and brands that actually stand out and sell. READY TO STEP INTO YOUR MOVEMENT MAKER ERA? If you're listening to this and thinking, “That's me. I'm ready to be seen as the leader I really am,” you can: Learn more about the Movement Makers Mastermind + Retreats here:

As part of my summer podcast replay series, I'm sharing a replay of a powerful podcast episode with book strategist Richelle Fredson.Nearly every author I meet wants to be traditionally published. But the path to get a book deal can feel darn near impossible. Not only do you have to create a book proposal, which is a massive project in and of itself, but you then need to pitch agents. Where is an aspiring author to start?Well, Richelle Fredson is here to help in this week's episode. As a book proposal coach and publishing consultant, Richelle has worked with aspiring and published authors to create impactful book concepts and competitive book proposals. In this episode, we cover:What a nonfiction book proposal is and why authors need oneThe key components of a nonfiction book proposalHow an author's platform, credentials, and other aspects factor into their ability to get signed by a publisherCommon misconceptions about the process of looking for an agent and landing a dealTips for making your proposal stand out and getting your dream book dealRichelle is the former director of publicity and book marketing for Hay House, and also served in acquisitions, so she knows her stuff. There is no way we woke up to student loan interest restarting and tariffs, can we breathe?!?!?! Kamala's is dropping a book and not running for Cali Gov (y'all had your chance, remember?). Ghislaine Maxwell won't be getting immunity, but folks still want the Epstein files. American Eagle's ad with Sydney Sweeney is a hot mess. NYC had a mass shooting, and Texas is in the middle of a flood scandal. Shannon Sharpe got the boot from ESPN. Carl Crawford is offering BBLs with his record deals (I wish this was a joke). Justin Timberlake says he's got Lyme disease, and Katy Perry might be cozying up with Justin Trudeau. Oh, and Giveon dropped something new, but can he unseat Fridayy? Let's unpack the mess.
