This week on the Expert Voices podcast, Randy Wootton, CEO of Maxio, speaks with Ron Baker, CEO of Verasage Institute, author, and long-time influencer in the finance and accounting space. Ron and Randy discuss the concept of value-based pricing and the need for businesses to move away from the traditional hourly billing model. Ron also highlights the need for CPAs to shift from being problem solvers to strategic advisors, guiding businesses toward their desired future state. Ron and Randy discuss the value of taking risks and adapting to change to stay ahead in a disruptive market as a business. Quotes"For value pricing, it is just a different mindset. It's more of an entrepreneurial mindset than a production mindset. It's more of being a true professional, a definition of a professional, somebody who's accountable for creating a result, not performing a series of tasks. If I want a series of tasks, I'll hire a day laborer to walk my dog, mow my lawn, and clean my gutters. But if I hire a professional, I'm looking for some type of outcome. Perfect eyesight from an eye doctor, that type of thing. And the problem with the timesheet and the billable hour, the mindset that it creates is that's what we sell.” -Ron Baker [04:47]“The distinction between a series of tasks versus result orientation, one of the keys is vertical expertise. So, understanding the nuances, I used to talk about that with selling. You could sell into travel, but selling travel is super different when you're selling to hotels versus airplanes versus car rentals and seats versus heads and beds. The language you used, how they thought about getting people, and the acquisition costs, are all very unique to the sub-verticals. 20% of accounting firms that are doing well by being advisors is they have context, industry context, probably they know a bunch of people and they've got a bunch of. They're able to do pattern matching.” -Randy Wootton [12:49]Expert Takeaways Value-based pricing is a more effective approach than hourly billing, as it focuses on customer value rather than time spent.CPAs should move from being problem solvers to strategic advisors, guiding businesses toward their desired future state.Subscription business models offer simplicity, convenience, and peace of mind to clients while providing firms with planned capacity and the ability to offer additional services.Deep industry expertise and specialization are key factors in the success of advisory services.Businesses should be willing to take risks, as profits come from risk-taking.Timestamps[00:02] Introduction to Ron Baker and his work on value-based pricing [02:43] The need to move away from billing based on time [03:37] The problem with timesheets and the importance of measuring results [06:10] The pricing revolution in corporate America [08:46] Moving away from cost-plus pricing to customer-value pricing [12:43] Characteristics of successful accounting firms [16:33] Subscription business model for accounting services [21:37] Amazon's acquisition of One Medical and the subscription model [23:12] Differentiation in willingness to pay and understanding customer needs [31:13] Evolution of accounting and finance function to strategy and possibility [33:21] Profits come from risk, not just past data LinksMAXIO

Embrace your calendar as more than just a scheduling tool! In this episode, May emphasizes that living life on autopilot leads to missed opportunities and a lack of fulfillment. She advocates for intentional scheduling, which involves deliberately setting goals and the technique of creating milestones for each goal on the calendar. This practice creates opportunities to regularly evaluate progress, audit actions, and make necessary adjustments to stay on track.   May explains that this kind of structured approach provides a framework for not only setting goals but also for continuously assessing how well you're moving toward them. It allows for moments of reflection, where you can course-correct or amplify efforts to accelerate positive outcomes. This level of accountability ensures that you're actively engaged in your journey towards your goals.   Another crucial aspect that May discusses is understanding the 'why' behind your goals. Knowing the deeper reasons for pursuing certain objectives can be a massive driving force. This, coupled with a calendar-centric approach, forms a powerful combination for goal attainment.   May's mantra encourages listeners who are thinking about 2024 to step out of the mundane flow of life and to take control of their time and, ultimately, their success so that they can enjoy the life and business they desire next year.   In this last episode of 2023, May shares her wishes that all listeners will be intentional, be present and savor every single moment they are blessed with!   Quotes: • “For me, living is really knowing what you're doing every single minute in a day, really being present.” (3:47 | May Silvers) • “Today I'm going to talk about not going through the motion. And if it's not on the calendar, it doesn't count. Why is it important to be on the calendar? The reason why we want to put it on the calendar is we have set an intention. Okay? We set an intention that something's going to happen on that day.” (5:25 | May Silvers)  • “You want to be already tracking yourself month after month. So if you don't see any progress, you have time to catch what are you not doing correctly, what needs to be done, and then you can course correct. So when you are every single month closer to the date of your date of achievement you are auditing your progress and your process you are giving yourself time to course correct and this is the part that people tend to forget.” (10:37 | May Silvers)  • “You need to do some work in regards to understanding your why. Why do you want to have this? Why do you want to have this goal? Because if you don't define your why, the desire is not there. If you never had it, you never have the loss of not having it. So it's easy to give up.” (16:04 | May Silvers)   Links This is the LAST week before the 50% discount expires for HoneyBook, one of the most popular software used by the majority of event prof! In 2017, Austin and his brother Quinn started their journey in their grandmother's utility room with a family recipe for chocolate covered peanut butter. Natural Way Food Group has since grown to sell peanut butter in six different flavors in over one thousand stores across the country, including Walmart, Safeway, Sprouts, and Whole Foods. And so that's the same mentality I have with our business. I may not be the smartest guy in the room, but I will outwork you. I will put in more hours than you do. I will find a way to get over whatever hurdle I have in my way to get to the next point.” - Austin Simkins, (17:14) “Building those relationships at the end of the day, I can love my job, I can make as much peanut butter as I can make, but if I don't have customers that love the product and believe in what we're doing, it doesn't matter. So they are the lifeblood of the company. I want to connect with people on the deepest scale that we can.” - Austin Simkins, (33:10) “Trust the process. The first couple of years when we started, it was the expectation that things would happen overnight, and I think that's part of our culture of instant gratification. We're just inundated with it. We put in a little bit of work and we want the finished result right now...but as I've gotten a little bit older, I've just fallen in love with the process. I've had a couple of mentors that have told me if you can learn to love the process instead of the results, you could do this your entire life.” - Austin Simkins, (40:06)

Amy Irvine and Kate Welker discuss whether people should be pulling money out of the stock market and putting it into cash. They explain that while cash may currently be yielding a high rate of return, historically, a stock market-based portfolio will provide a higher rate of return over the long term. They also discuss the concept of the yield curve and how it affects different investment options. Additionally, they provide tips for saving on taxes at the end of the year, such as maximizing contributions to retirement plans and considering Roth conversions.Key Takeaways:Historically, a stock market-based portfolio will provide a higher rate of return over the long term compared to cash. The yield curve refers to the relationship between short-term and long-term interest rates. A normal yield curve has lower short-term rates and higher long-term rates.Consider maximizing contributions to retirement plans and exploring Roth conversions to save on taxes at the end of the year.Quotes:"For a long-term investment, staying steady in the market is more successful." - Kate Welker"Run some numbers right now. However, it is important to consider one's long-term goals and objectives before making any decisions based on fear. As Kate Welker, one of the financial planners at Rooted Planning Group, explains:"If you have one side of your equation allocated to stocks and equities, and the other side allocated to fixed income, such as bonds, CDs, cash, or money market funds, it may be ideal to allocate a portion of your cash to a money market fund that is currently yielding a higher rate of return. While this rate is not guaranteed and may change in the future, it is currently around 5%."It is crucial to remember that historically, a stock market-based portfolio has provided a higher rate of return over the long term compared to cash investments. As Kate points out, cash investments have historically averaged around 1.2% return, while a stock market-based portfolio can yield a historical rate of return of 7% to 9%. Therefore, staying invested in the stock market is generally more beneficial for long-term investment goals.Understanding the Yield CurveTo fully grasp the implications of investing in different types of fixed income vehicles, it is important to understand the concept of the yield curve. The yield curve represents the relationship between the interest rates and the time to maturity of bonds of the same credit quality. A flat yield curve occurs when short-term and long-term interest rates are relatively equal, while an inverted yield curve occurs when short-term interest rates are higher than long-term rates. As Amy Irvine, the CEO and founder of Rooted Planning Group, explains:"A flat yield curve would mean that a three-month CD, a five-year CD, and a ten-year CD all have the same interest rate, for example, 5%. An inverted yield curve, on the other hand, occurs when shorter-term interest rates are higher than longer-term rates."In recent...

This research focuses on identifying the habits that truly contribute to sustained high performance, competitive differentiation, trust building, and organizational growth, and offers guidance on how individuals can develop and practice these essential habits.SHOW SUMMARYIn this episode of Selling From The Heart, Andrew Sykes discusses the importance of trust in sales and how to build trust in the first few minutes of a conversation. He shares his insights from years of research on trust and offers practical advice for sales professionals. Andrew emphasizes the need for salespeople to be committed to helping others make progress in their lives and to understand and meet their customers' expectations. He also challenges the common belief that trust takes time to build and explains how trust can be established in a matter of minutes. Andrew provides a framework for creating a strong first impression and highlights the power of genuine smiles and eye contact. He also discusses the role of apologies in trust-building and the importance of self-trust.KEY TAKEAWAYSTrust is something we give to others by vulnerably exposing ourselves to their potential deception or incompetence.Trustworthiness is assessed by others based on their experience of people like us in the past. The first few minutes of a conversation are crucial for building trust, and salespeople should focus on creating a strong first impression.Salespeople should introduce themselves by sharing one thing about their credible past and one thing that led them to choose their current profession.Apologies often break trust instead of restoring it, and salespeople should focus on acknowledging the impact of their actions and fixing it.People often lack self-trust and easily break promises to themselves, which can hinder their personal and professional growth.QUOTES"For me, selling from the heart means being committed to helping another human being make progress in their life.""Trust is something we give to other people. It's choosing to vulnerably expose ourselves to someone else's deception, incompetence, or lack of a track record.""Being trustworthy as assessed by someone else couldn't be more different because we assess trust based on false signals.""Trust is a generous thing to give, but being worthy of trust is assessed by someone else based on their experience of people like you in the past.""The feeling most people have when we're approaching them as salespeople is not unlike that feeling when you see three young adults with clipboards on the street.""Rather than saying, 'My name is Andrew, I'm the head of sales,' I encourage people to say one thing about their credible past and one thing that led them to choose their current profession.""Apologies usually break trust, not restore it. It's important to acknowledge the impact of your actions and focus on fixing it.""People often lack self-trust and easily sell themselves down the river, quitting on their dreams or promises to themselves.""The only way to unlock the greatness in us that hides behind our blind spots is to have generous people point to things in our potential that we don't see in ourselves."Learn more about Andrew Sykes: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/andrewsykes1/Learn more about Darrell and Larry: Darrell's LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/darrellamy/Larry's LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/larrylevine1992/Website: https://www.sellingfromtheheart.net/Got a video about how you sell from the heart? The Law Firm Leadership Podcast | We Interview Corp Defense Law Firm Leaders, Partners, General Counsel and Legal Consultants

“For mergers to be successful, there really has to be a strategic reason on both sides that is well thought out by both parties, regardless of who makes the approach to whom,” explains Gary Miles, President and CEO of Miles Partner Placement, an elite partner placement group movement and merger boutique. Today, Gary speaks with host Chris Batz about recent law firm merger activity, future trends for corporate law firms, and the ABA rule 5.2.  Gary explains that in his opinion a successful merger is one which has a high level of retention over the time the partnership was brought on along with increased metrics from the combined entity over time. In order to achieve this success, there needs to be a very strategic reason for the merger on both sides that is fully thought out prior to even letting the public know. Recently mergers have been being made more public, hitting the media well before details are truly ironed out. This is surprising as in the past firms were much more careful about stopping the leak of information. As for the future, Gary believes that with the client market heading more toward globalization, that smaller entities will need to consider merging or allowing themselves to be acquired in order to achieve rapid growth. Consolidation happens in businesses every day and the same is beginning to be seen with law firms. Law firm mergers tend to get a lot of attention and it can be useful to have the details completely ironed out before word hits the press. When judging whether a merger is successful or not, it is important to look at least 5 years down the road to really understand where the metrics sit for the combined entity. With a market push toward globalization, law firm mergers are likely to be more and more common in the coming years.  Quotes “For mergers to be successful, there really has to be a strategic reason on both sides that is well thought out by both parties, regardless of who makes the approach to whom.” (7:33 | Gary)  “I term a successful merger, from my perspective, I'm not using some sort of, you know, defined industry standard, but a high level of retention over time of the firm partnership that was brought on. Increased metrics from the combined entity over time.” (11:59 | Gary) “There's consolidation happening every day, law firms depend upon it in terms of revenue.” (19:15 | Gary) “A lot of times what gets in the way most often of deals is either the outright adversity or the quote, unquote major client business conflict that often exists.” (37:20 | Gary)  “In our country's history, money usually wins out. Capital will find a way to win out.” (38:51 | Gary) Links Connect with Gary Miles: Miles Partner Placement:  https://milespartnerplacement.com/ Gary Miles' LinkedIn Profile:  https://www.linkedin.com/in/gary-miles-aa7b28103/ Connect with Chris Batz: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/chrisbatz/  Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/theliongroupkc  Instagram: @theliongroupllc Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

“Imagine being a Black boy growing up, seeing where you're targeted, but nobody's talking about it. And worse, no Black parent is talking about it,” shares Dr. Christina Christian, educator and leader in special education and student success. Today, she joins host D-Rich to explore how parents navigate the joy, excitement, anxiety, and fear of raising a Black son.   Parents of Black boys need to be very intentional and proactive about their educational, social, spiritual, and emotional development to establish a strong foundation against the racial targeting they are unfortunately going to face. Black boys are still the lowest performing academically and research shows that they end up in the system more frequently than their White counterparts. Many teachers still have very little to no expectations for the success of Black male students and this can be extremely damaging to them. The systems in place and the discrimination especially within educational settings are designed to hold our Black boys back.    Talk to your Black sons about what it means to be a Black male in today's society and be proactive about getting involved in their education from the start so that you can stop any issues that may arise. Be sure to read your son books that reflect who he is and will become and validate the qualities that make him special and unique, so that he won't lose himself in the face of discrimination.    Quotes • “For a lot of these young boys, they just wanted school clothes, that was it. These were good kids who just wanted a nice jacket. They wanted the shoes and they saw drugs as a very easy, quick, simple way to get it. And they were being arrested over and over and over.” (10:10-10:27 | Dr. Christian) • “It's still Black males and the stereotypes that teachers have for them and no expectations, not low, but no expectations for what they're able to accomplish.” (23:47-24:03 | Dr. Christian)  • “When you put your child in a class, especially when you have a Black boy, write down your expectations. Sit down and have a meeting with that teacher and tell that teacher, these are the expectations I have.” (29:05-29:17 | Dr. Christian) • “Our black boys are the lowest performing we have in academics.” (34:06-34:12 | Dr. Christian) • “A black boy, white boy, black girl, white girl. All four of them can commit the exact same offense, and research shows black boys will be given the harshest consequence.” (35:24-35:40 | Dr. Christian) • “Imagine being a black boy growing up, seeing where you're targeted, but nobody's talking about it. The Code: A Guide to Health and Human Performance

“If I pay attention to my protein, it takes the guesswork out of so much other stuff,” explains host Dr. Andrew. When you're building muscle, you must prioritize your protein. Although it may seem challenging, Dr. Andrew reveals how much protein you need in your diet to see long-term results.   Whether you are trying to lose weight, gain muscle, recover from workouts, or heal from injuries, you must have protein in your diet. When you consume sufficient protein, your body goes into muscle protein synthesis, creating muscle from the food you eat. To trigger this process, you need at least 30 grams of protein in a sitting while keeping in mind that one gram per pound is a standard recommendation. For example, a 150-pound person will need to ingest around 150 grams of protein daily and consume 30 grams five times a day to stimulate muscle protein synthesis. Although protein-tracking can be tricky, once you make it part of your fitness journey, you will feel much better in your everyday life.   It may not seem important, but protein is essential to health. Although there are other factors to optimizing human performance, such as sleep, counting your protein can keep you more consistently on track. If you eat enough protein, you will be full longer while boosting your metabolic rate, making it much easier to care for your body and achieve your goals.   Quotes • “For many people who have challenges with body pain, recovery issues, and weight, the priority needs to be put on the protein and the quality of the protein in their diets.” (1:58-2:31 | Dr. Andrew)  • “If I pay attention to my protein, it takes the guesswork out of so much other stuff.” (3:53-4:01 | Dr. Andrew)  • “I feel so good eating a higher amount of protein.” (7:43-7:46 | Dr. Andrew)  • “When you have more muscle mass, your body's natural metabolism, your metabolic rate will be a little bit higher.” (7:59-8:05 | Dr. Andrew)  • “Eating larger amounts of protein in fewer sittings throughout the day is better than just grazing all day.” (13:51-14:00 | Dr. Andrew)   Links https://peterattiamd.com/donlayman/   Connect with Physio Room:  Website | https://physioroomco.com/  Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/physioroomco/ Facebook | https://www.facebook.com/physioroomco Andrew's Personal Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/dr.andrewfix/  Andrew's Personal Facebook | https://www.facebook.com/andrew.fix.9/   Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

You don't have to make that a reality, your lifestyle is going to decide which way things will go.” “The reality is that being first on your list is being selfless.” Follow JJ Virgin: Website: https://jjvirgin.com/  YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/jjvirginvideos  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jj.virgin/  Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/JJVirginOfficial/  Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/ask-the-health-expert/id911502027

Fasting is one of the popular ways to eat for weight loss. However, it's not without its pitfalls, especially if you're trying to change your body composition. I'm all about finding the best way to fast in a way that works for you. In this episode, I'm talking about the five pitfalls of fasting and what you can do to avoid them.   The Pitfalls of Fasting You're not eating enough protein The sub-optimal eating window when trying to optimize body composition You're eating too many calories Increased stress from fasting All-or-none thinking   Make Your Fast Work For You There are so many different ways to fast and, while I'm not an advocate for or against fasting, I do encourage you to find the way that works best for you and your body if you are fasting. I don't believe fasting is the best way to eat if you're trying to make significant body composition changes. However, if it's working for you, keep going. Protein is an essential macronutrient to repair and strengthen your muscles. You probably need to eat more protein than you're getting to prevent muscle loss, especially if you're working out.  Your fast also might not work for you if you leave it too long to eat after a workout. You need to replenish the nutrients your body used during your workout – you can't do that if you don't eat for hours afterward. If you want to continue fasting, ensure your fast works best for your body.   Fasting and Your Body's Stress Response Many people combine a fasting routine with eating a low-carb/high-fat diet. Even if this isn't how you eat, it's still possible and relatively easy to overeat your calories.  Fasting can also cause stress on your body, especially if you're chronically fasting. Fasting can impact your body's response to stress, especially if you're naturally more prone to a stress response. Finally, fasting can lead to all-or-none thinking, which it really doesn't have to be. You don't have to fast every single day. It really is what works for you, for your body type, and your body composition goals. And, if you don't like the results you're getting from fasting, you can change how you fast. Have you done fasting before? Did it work for you? Tell me about your fasting regime in the comments on the episode page.   In This Episode  The types of fasting [4:00] Why fasting isn't great for body composition changes [6:30] How eating the right amount of protein prevents lean muscle loss [8:00] Why you need to eat after working out to rebuild your muscle [15:00] What to do if you don't like the results you're getting with your current fasting regime [17:00] What happens if you overeat fat [22:00] How chronic fasting can cause too much stress on your body [25:00] What can happen when you don't apply all-or-none thinking to your fasting regimen [28:45]   Quotes “For every pound that we lose on the scale, if we are not optimizing our nutrition with the protein and also strength training, we could lose about 25% lean mass.” [7:39] “The idea is to start to get yourself used to what it will take to get different results. If you want different results, you have to do something different.” [18:50] “For fasting to have any benefit, it doesn't have to be this really long, prolonged day-in day-out type of event. If you like the lifestyle of fasting, it's no problem. Really try to do it in a way that feels good for you.” [28:02]   Resources Mentioned So Much More Than Weightloss YouTube Series So Much More Than Weightloss  Consult with the Life Coaching for Women Physicians Team Check out the full episode page here Find Life Coaching for Women Physicians Online Follow Dr. Ali Novitsky on Facebook | Instagram  Subscribe to Life Coaching for Women Physicians on Apple Podcasts Podcast production by the team at Counterweight Creative   Related Episodes Episode 129: So Much More Than Weight Loss Part 1 Episode 130: So Much More Than Weight Loss Part 2 Episode 128: Rethinking Weight Loss

In today's episode of the Live UNREAL podcast, we're shining a light on some of the best and brightest agents on real estate teams from all over the country. As we think of the needs of the industry - teams remain a very important area of focus and we're excited to be giving recognition to the people thriving on them.  Today, Jeff is joined on stage by Bri Frazier and Brian Denney, who will share what they are doing to get their outstanding results in business and the value they get out of being on a team. Bri hasn't just sold a ton of units with a volume of $50 million after 4 years in the business, her Zillow conversion rate is triple that of the industry average! Brian has sold 97 homes and earned $110 million in volume.  Both agents will give you a peek behind the curtain of the business and share some of the ways they are setting themselves up for success on their teams.    We also discussed: How new agents can get more deals by leveraging open houses and listing previews How to properly pass off the client to a showing agent so it doesn't feel like a disservice Why Brian implemented a daily video power hour into his schedule The 20-contact model    Quotes  For a brand new agent open houses are a great way to build a reputation. -Jeff Glover  When you're producing at this level, it's really hard to find a circle like what I have in the team. -Bri Frazier    Key Points  One of the things Bri Frazier is doing to have a Zillow conversion rate of 11% (3x the industry average) is having a dedicated VA answering the calls to pre-scrub and set appointments. This means she never misses a call from a lead. Many agents wouldn't want to give up a portion of their commission, but it's what enables you to do more transactions while getting your time back.    Control your calendar, don't let it control you. The first 4 hours of your calendar are sacred and committing to them is non-negotiable. No matter what, we have to protect those first 4 hours and then everything else comes after that.

Michael Dansinger, MD, is a weight loss and nutrition expert who advised NBC's inspirational reality show “The Biggest Loser” for 10 years. He shares his insights and opinions about the global obesity epidemic, popular weight loss diets, weight loss and regain in Biggest Loser participants, and how to teach good eating habits to your teens when they can eat anything they want without consequences for their age.    Key Takeaways Dr. Michael shares why he believes the American diet is so unhealthy.  Teenagers are getting a ton of mixed messages on how to eat. When it comes to healthy food, there isn't a simple answer. It's very easy for parents to be too extreme on both the unhealthy and healthy food spectrum.  It's okay to eat treats, but it has to be purposeful and not ‘accidental' or because you have no choice/other options. Your home has to be a place that has mostly healthy foods. How do you teach your teen in a way that's helpful?  Parents need to negotiate with their teens and get buy-in with their teen on this process. Dr. Michael understands that parenting is not always so black and white.  It's good to have a consistent eating strategy in your household. If your teens get addicted to unhealthy food during these development years, it affects them throughout their adulthood.  You can get your blood tested, which will provide you with a customized nutrition plan based on your type.    Sponsored by Lessons in Leadership online program: Edgerety.com Resources Michaeldansingermd.com/biggest-loser   https://www.linkedin.com/in/michael-dansinger-md-8788373/   Bostonheartdiagnostics.com Quotes:   “For over 50 years, the American diet has been increasingly unhealthy, and this is because we allow food companies to advertise and promote unhealthy foods.”    “It's all about navigating the ‘gray' zone (of healthy and unhealthy), which is hard!”    “When a parent eats unhealthy food, it undermines their ability to do what I say, not what I do.”

This year's theme for Hispanic Heritage Month from the National Council of Hispanic Employment Program Managers is, "Unidos: Inclusivity for a Stronger Nation." With 62 million people and over 21 different cultures, Latinos/x are a unique combination of black, Asian, white, indigenous, Middle Eastern, and mixed races. When describing their identity, research shows that over half (51%) of Hispanics and Latinos/x say they most often use their family's country of origin – using such terms as Mexican, Cuban, Puerto Rican, Salvadoran or Dominican. It's a cultural nuance, as most Latinos/x don't feel they fit under a "one umbrella" identity.  To build inclusivity in the workplace, leaders have an opportunity to drive a sense of belonging in the Latino/x community. In this episode, Monica Marquez (aka the “Macgyver for the Marginalized”) discusses how leaders can raise awareness and visibility to develop the next generation of future-ready leaders to go further faster, together. Highlights:  [2:22] Significance of Hispanic Heritage Month [6:26] Differences between Hispanic vs. Latino/x [9:42] Origin of “Latinx” [12:57] Embracing Hispanic and Latin/X terminology [14:54] Raising Latino/X visibility to develop the next generation   Quotes: “For the Hispanic and Latino/x community to move forward and get ahead, we have to go further, faster together as one inclusive familia. Some of us may think, won't all of these different labels divide our community? Only if we let it.” - Monica Marquez "There are so many of my Latino/x colleagues I see doing amazing things. So let's lift each other up." -Monica Marquez “As my colleague, Frank Carbajal says, ‘Es tiempo to embrace Latinx' - because you're embracing a new segment of the population that is identifying and saying they're proud Latinos/x with a strong Latinos/x origin. They want to recognize their roots, but they want a terminology that makes sense to them.” - Monica Marquez About Monica Marquez: Monica Marquez is a senior corporate leader, ex-Googler, and diversity expert. Authentic Change

“That's where we start with personal branding. Start with a dialogue. What's your ‘why'? Who are you? Number two, what makes you happy? And of course, three, what's your end goal?”, shares Paula Mattisonsierra, founder of Power Marketing SF with over 25 years of marketing experience. She helps business owners discover and cultivate their personal brand. Today, Paula joins Mike Horne in conversation to discuss the intricacies of marketing and why having a strong, authentic personal brand is vital for the success of any business. When people first hear the words ‘personal branding' they often think first of social media and overly filtered, perfect Instagram photos. However, social media alone is not enough to lock in your personal brand and get your message out there. The first step is to really sit down and think about your ‘why'. Who are you? What is most important to you? Once you have discovered your ‘why', you can move on to figuring out your end goal and how you intend to get there. Your personal brand and messaging is vital, because it will attract the attention of clients, vendors, and investors who have similar interests. Nowadays, people don't want to do business with just anyone. They want to do business with companies that reflect their values and owners they feel they can trust.  If you present some perfect, polished and ultimately fake version of yourself on social media, it will eventually backfire, because at some point your true self will come out. Embracing authenticity from the start will get you further in the long run. Tune into this week's episode of the Authentic Change Podcast to learn more about how to develop your authentic personal brand, how marketing goes beyond social media, and how to recognize and accept help when it is offered.  Quotes: “For me, marketing and operations are very tied together. It's a love story. They're locked and loaded together.” (9:33-9:39 | Paula)  “Not everyone who smiles at you is your friend. And not everyone who's irritated with you is your enemy. Know the difference.” (13:13-13:21 | Paula) “People already know the answers. They're sometimes not confident about the answers. But I realized that as business owners, they're in it every day…They're seeing everything and not realizing they're seeing everything.” (14:42-15:10 | Paula) “I think when people hear the words ‘social media,' suddenly Instagram comes to mind. Everything always seems staged and fixed up. Let me tell you something about those people out there who are filtering and seem overly pulled together, it does not last, because eventually you become yourself. And that never works out well.” (17:57-18:20 | Paula) “When it comes to personal branding, start with a dialogue. What's your ‘why?' Who are you? Number two, what makes you happy? And of course, three, what's your end goal?” (19:09-19:22 | Paula) “Yes, it would be wonderful to start today, but it's so much better to start with a plan first.” (36:52-36:58 | Paula) Links: Mentioned in this episode: Learn more about Mike Horne on Linkedin Email Mike at mike@mike-horne.com Find more about Leading People and Culture with Authenticity   Learn more about Paula Mattisonsierra Website https://www.powermarketingsf.com/   Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

EPISODE SUMMARY In this episode of Chan With A Plan, host Max Chan speaks with Roman Prokopchuk Founder of Nova Zora Digital, and podcast host of the Digital Savage Experience. In this conversation, Roman discusses lessons he learned during the 2008 recession that will help others prepare for what many experts are predicted the next big recession.    QUOTES “For me, I didn't really have a choice. So, I took advantage of the opportunity. Ask yourself, ‘If you get an opportunity in a completely different field, and it potentially can lead to something else are you going to take it?' My recommendation would be take it because you don't know where it could lead you.” – Roman Prokopchuk “All the ups and downs and getting to wherever you want to get, so if you're doing it that way, and you're getting value out of the process and the journey, and it's actually rewarding.” – Roman Prokopchuk  “Maybe they don't give you an opportunity, but at least you can pick their brain, maybe even ask them, has this ever happened to you? What do you recommend, for me, what would be the best thing? So, taking opportunities like that, there's a lot of things you can do for free, it just takes you time to find them.” – Roman Prokopchuk   TIMESTAMPS [01:39] Roman's story [05:48] Signs of the 2008 recession [06:41] How the recession affected friends and family [09:46] More millionaires are made during economic hardships [13:20] Businesses and their plans to weather recessions [18:09] Testing business ideas before pulling the plug [19:41] Future proofing yourself and being adaptable [25:42] Deciding which direction to take when things get rough [30:12] Learning lessons through the recession and how he might've handled it differently [33:41] Dealing with being fired [36:41] Advice on learning a new skill [45:08] If the recession in 2008 hadn't have happened would you have followed a different path? You'd have to build the app, submit it to Apple and Google, and then have them approve it to put it on their store.” [1:37] “By going the web app route, we were able to have half the amount of developers in the early days and focus all our time on building one app versus two apps.” [4:34] “I think that's what gave us kind of a competitive edge, having that platform where we could build one app that goes to iOS, Android and web.” [7:49] “Overall, I think that all apps that don't need intensive power are going to start going the web app route, if they haven't already.” [9:27] “Our clients keep it easy for us. We don't have to be creative that much because they tell us what they want and need and that is the route we usually go with new features and new additions to the software.” [12:03] LINKS: On The Go App (Google Play) & (Apple App Store) Kiosk & Admin Logins support@fitdegree.com  https://www.facebook.com/groups/fitDEGREE  https://calendly.com/fitDEGREE  https://www.fitdegree.com/blog  https://www.youtube.com/channel/UChJ5rK6zWPXjbxtUQx3ys9Q

Holy Heretics: Losing Religion and Finding Jesus
Ep. 50 White God, Brown Jesus: Decolonizing Christianity w/ Dr. Miguel De La Torre

Holy Heretics: Losing Religion and Finding Jesus

Play Episode Listen Later May 31, 2022 56:17

The vast majority of Americans worship the white god—the god of Christian nationalism, white supremacy, domination, patriarchy, wealth, power, and colonization. The god of guns and empire, the god that exists to make white men great again. It shouldn't surprise anyone that powerful white people created a god in their own image, in the image of white men has this god been created. As Dr. Miguel De La Torre responds, “What we say is Christianity today is really an ideology of white supremacy and nationalism…This is what evangelical Christianity is today.” And in service of this false evangelical god, white westerners are blind to the victims of their philosophical and theological fabrication. Our deep-rooted blind spots are so common in white evangelicalism and are further engrained by wealth, history, race, and social standing to a point where the vast majority of Christians in the west are living a version of Christianity that is completely anathema to the historical Jesus. However, if you grew up in non-white spaces, in colonized countries, or in economically challenging environments, odds are your faith looks radically different. Odds are you serve the brown God of the oppressed instead of the white god of MAGA Christianity. Which is just one reason why those of us deconstructing evangelicalism are in such dire need of liberation, liberation from the white god that continues to colonize our hearts and minds. One of the paths toward freedom can be found in the liberation and post-liberation theology movements from Latin America. Liberation theology is a social and political movement attempting to interpret the gospel of Jesus Christ through the lived experiences of oppressed people. Liberation theology has its origins in Latin America in the mid-1950s as socio-economic development created by peasant workers and farming populations who had been driven into desperate poverty. With the economic unrest came political unrest, and military dictators took over many governments in the name of national security, only further marginalizing the poor. But from these oppressive experiences came a theology that drives its legitimacy from the perspective of the poor and oppressed. Liberation theology gave us queer Jesus, black Jesus, immigrant Jesus, and Marxist revolutionary Jesus. It is a version of faith that identifies exclusively with the oppressed. It is ironic then that Latin American liberation theology just might save white people from ourselves, but only if we have the humility to come face to face with our colonial past and present drive for power and domination. This episode deconstructs the white god and dives into other forms of evangelical oppression including gender oppression, LGBTQIA+ marginalization, white supremacy, and nationalistic Christianity. Dr. De La Torre offers a practical way forward in our attempt to free ourselves from the white man's god. BioRev. Dr. Miguel A. De La Torre is Professor of Social Ethics and Latinx Studies at the Iliff School of Theology in Denver, Colorado. He has served as the elected 2012 President of the Society of Christian Ethics and served as the Executive Officer for the Society of Race, Ethnicity and Religion (2012-17). In 2020 the American Academy of Religion bestowed upon the the Excellence in Teaching Award. Dr. De La Torre is a recognized international Fulbright scholar who has taught courses at the Cuernavaca Center for Intercultural Dialogue on Development (Mexico), Indonesian Consortium for Religious Studies (Indonesia), University of Johannesburg (South Africa), Johannes Gutenberg University (Germany). Additionally, he has lectured at Universidad Bíblica Latinoamericana (Costa Rica), The Association for Theological Education in South East Asia (Thailand) and the Council of World Mission (Mexico and Taiwan). Advocating for an ethics of place, De La Torre has taken students on immersion classes to Cuba and the Mexico/U.S. border to walk the migrant trails. Among multiple yearly speaking engagements, he has also been a week-long speaker at the Chautauqua Institute, and the plenary address at the Parliament of World Religions De La Torre has received several national book awards and is a frequent speaker at national and international scholarly religious events and meetings. He also speaks at churches and nonprofit organizations on topics concerning the intersection of race, class, gender, and sexuality with religion. In 2020, the American Academy of Religion bestowed on him the Excellence in Teaching Award. The following year, 2021, the American Academy also conferred upon him the Martin E. Marty Public Understanding of Religion Award. De La Torre is the first scholar to receive the two most prestigious awards presented by his guild and the first Latinx to receive either one of them.Quotes:“For white people to get saved, they have to learn how to worship the black Jesus.”“For our economy to function, men of color have to mostly be unemployed.”“I have to constantly be suspicious of my worldview.”“White evangelicalism must be crucified. It has to die.”“Evangelical Christianity has become an apologist and supporter of the rise of U.S. empire.”“The death of Christianity is because of evangelicalism.”“What does the Gospel have to say to the oppressed?”When I worship the white god, I am worshipping a philosophical and theological position that justifies oppression.” “Badass Christianity is a radical implementation of the Gospel message.”“I believe in whatever the poor believe in.”“All forms of oppression really begins with gender oppression.”Please follow us on social media (use the buttons below) and help us get the word out! Showing up for your authentic body is one of the most amazing things you can do for yourself. It's not about restricting your food or exercising every day or even about that goal body weight. It's about finding what works for you and your body type and choosing to honor that every day. From the exercise that feels good to food that nourishes you and the sleep that supports you to the clothes that feel authentic - let's unpack how to show up for your authentic body.   Support Your Authentic Body By Identifying your body type (ectomorph, mesomorph, endomorph) Eating foods that nourish your body type Finding movement that your body loves Figuring out your ideal sleep schedule Wearing what you want and what your body feels good in   Find Out Your Body Type Showing up for your authentic body means doing the things that feel good for it, regardless of what you “should” do. This might take some trial and error to find how your body functions best, but trust me when I say it's worth it. A big part of showing up for your authentic body is figuring out what your body type is. There are three main body types: ectomorph, metamorph, and endomorph. Each body type responds differently to exercise and nutrition, and it's up to you to choose how to honor that.   Eat, Move, Sleep, and Dress to Support Your Authentic Body The other keys to supporting your authentic body stem from knowing what your body type is. Each body type needs to follow some more specific nutrition guidelines - but that's all they are: guidelines. It's up to you to figure out what works best for you. It's also so important for you to find a way to move your body that feels good for you. If you don't like to run, don't run. Exercise should be both enjoyable and make you feel good, so if it doesn't do either of these things, don't do it. Finding your ideal sleep schedule is an important step to supporting your authentic body. You maybe need more - or less - sleep than your friends and both are totally valid. I also talk about how to dress to support your authentic body, and the importance of the words you use for yourself. Think about how amazing your ideal body is. Do you want to get to know it better? Today you are in your amazing body. You start showing up for your authentic body now. How does it like to be talked to? Rested? Fed? Worked out? Dressed? Ask those questions and dive in. It's so worth it. Let me know what you're thinking in the comments on the episode page.   In This Episode  Why it's important to learn how your body functions best [3:15] What an ectomorph body type is [11:00] What a mesomorph body type is [11:45] What an endomorph body type is [12:45] How to talk to your authentic body [14:45] How to eat for your authentic body and body type [18:30] What happens when you find out your authentic body's ideal exercise [21:30] What dressing for your authentic body looks like [26:00]   Quotes “For me, showing up and knowing what it feels like to be in my authentic body is so much better than any goal weight or any goal body fat percentage or any parameter like that. It engages the mind-body connection, and ultimately, that is what we have to do for long-term, sustainable results.” [4:45] “As I was starting to see that I was feeling so good, some of the things that I used to view as restriction became extremely clear that it wasn't restriction. It was honoring my authentic body. All of a sudden, everything changed.” [19:36] “In order to achieve fat loss or whatever your primary goal is, you can eat all of the things some of the time, you just do all of the things all of the time. When you think of it that way, it feels restrictive. But when you think of it as, ‘I feel amazing in my authentic body, what can I do to show up for it?' Things will change for you. That's when our plan does not seem restrictive any longer.” [20:27]   Resources Mentioned Check out the full episode page here Find Life Coaching for Women Physicians Online Follow Dr. Ali Novitsky on Facebook | Instagram  Subscribe to Life Coaching for Women Physicians on Apple Podcasts Podcast production by the team at Counterweight Creative   Related Episodes Episode 95: Choosing Health Not Diet Culture Episode 105: Go All In On You Episode 101: You Are Enough

Do you know who is on your support team? According to Mike Pagan, coach and author of Mental Wealth: Unlock Your Potential, Enrich Your Life, the first step to mental wealth is determining who is on your team.  Mental wealth is the bank we can draw from when we are facing challenges in our lives. The most important strategy when creating mental wealth is putting together a support team of people who have our backs no matter what. With the right team behind us, challenges and mistakes will be easier to overcome. Mike explains that the easiest way to figure out who is in that support network is to make a list of names and rank them from one to ten. Only the 8s, 9s, and 10s count when it comes to building mental wealth. Tune into this week's episode of Powerful Marketing Tips for a conversation about mental wealth. Learn how to build and strengthen your support network, participate in intentional mindfulness, put yourself first, and work more effectively.    Quotes • “For me, a lot of my focus is very much on having the right support team around. Over my years of business, when I haven't had the right people that's when I've made the mistakes or I've had the challenges. Having good people around you doesn't mean you're not going to make mistakes. It just means you bounce back far more effectively.” (01:16-01:40)  • “Isolation…kills creativity and prevents decision-making.” (02:34-02:39) • “For me, it's not about networking. It's about understanding the power within our network.” (03:30-03:42) • “Self-care for me is a simple starting block…We have to be number one…If we're not number one we can't support others.” (07:38-08:00) • “I don't want anybody listening to this to go and work harder. I want them to be more effective when they're working.” (13:52-13:58) • “I just want people to create a list of names of people that they believe are part of their support team, their connections that are good for them. Some of those names will be quite random…It's who you think is supporting you. Then I want you to score them. Where 1 is a low score, 10 is a high score. And this is totally subjective…Don't give them a bigger score because you think they might be offended and don't give them a low score because you want to be mean…If you've scored somebody 1 to 3, then you know them, they're an acquaintance but they haven't got your back…If you scored somebody a 4 or a 5 then you know them because there is a reason. They might be part of a sport you're involved in, part of your community, the school your children go to. However, if you are away for a month or two...when you turn up they'll say, ‘Oh, great to see you again'… they won't ring you in between but they'll be very chirpy when they see you, because of the reason. You've then got your 5s and 6s. A lot of these people will be your good friends…however, the one thing you're not comfortable doing with these guys is talking about finances, ideas, goals, big plans. They're not going to get your intimate vulnerability…then your 8, 9s and 10s. These are the people who you are comfortable saying anything and everything to. What does it take to nurse a child with special needs? Author, shoemaker, and health advocate Christina Chiu knows just what it takes as her son was born with a rare syndrome. She joins Yuliana today to share her inspiring phoenix tale on how she takes on the challenges that come her way and how she continues to do what it takes to give her son the best life possible. Christina starts the conversation by discussing the event that reshaped her life — mothering her son who was born with a rare medical condition. She talks about how she dealt with her sense of hopelessness when her son was in the NICU and how she has grown to be more spiritual, embracing a mathematical idea of God. She then delves into her drive for more people to know their story, writing a memoir detailing her experiences as a result, and about dealing with uncertainties in the future. The episode rounds off with Christina identifying one person she would travel back in time to speak with, her grandmother, to ask her how she had so much courage - a level of courage that, as we hear today, has undeniably been passed on to Christina herself.   Episode Highlights: -   The challenging events that have redirected the course of Christina's life -   A rare syndrome rears its head -   Handling the sense of hopelessness during her son's surgeries -   A childhood memory that sparked a realization -   A mathematical idea of God -   Starting a memoir about her experience -   Navigating the sibling dynamic between her sons -   Dealing with uncertainties of the future -   One person Christina would go back in time to speak with   Quotes: “For all the mothers who are going to hear this, I think it's so important that, when you feel like something's not right, you may not have the actual proof that something's not right, but you should follow up on it.” “We are so limited in the few senses that we have, that for us to be able to comprehend God is just out of our realm of understanding.” “The best and the most truthful things are moments - whether it be something you create in art or literature or whatever - are in those transcendent moments.” “He's always that kid who notices when someone's being left out. He has this way of bringing light into the room, and I think I'm just lucky to be around him.” “A lot of it is approaching your fears and learning to not be afraid and to constantly stretch yourself.” “How do women not feel afraid? How does anyone not feel afraid?”   Links: https://www.yulianakimgrant.com/phoenix-tales (Phoenix Tales Homepage) https://www.instagram.com/yulianakimgrantofficial/ (Phoenix Tales on Instagram) https://open.spotify.com/show/1heIpPMsG6HbXXIDLmAnEe (Phoenix Tales on Spotify) https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=322043276201679 (Phoenix Tales on Facebook) https://www.christinachiu.org/ (Christina's Homepage)

In today's episode, May discusses how being thankful can positively impact the success of your business.  Even though life can get busy, it is always important to slow down and acknowledge everything that you are grateful for. Whether it's something big or small, May suggests writing some form of a gratitude journal that you can reflect on when things get tough. Not only will it positively affect your life, but it will also make you a better entrepreneur.  Tune into this week's episode of The Unstoppable Eventrepreneur™ to learn more about the importance of celebration and how to implement gratitude into your daily routine, so you can maintain an abundant life and prosperous business.    Quotes • “For me, being thankful and full of gratitude is important, but sometimes we don't give enough time, attention and energy to it because life gets in the way.” (03:18-03:40) • “We really need to make an effort to appreciate everything that we have in our life, big or small.” (04:57-05:09) • “We have the control to minimize the impact of unpleasant things happening, or even eliminate the possibility, if we do our due diligence, especially in business..” (09:26-09:39) • “Celebration doesn't just come from financial strength. This means you don't just celebrate when you get a big client, you celebrate every single thing in your business, especially something you haven't done before.” (12:03-12:23) • “Big milestones and financial gains should be broken down into many milestones, so that they are achievable.” (13:45-13:49) • “You should be thankful and grateful for something in your life every single day.” (15:25-15:32) • “When you are thankful, you live in a world of abundance.” (16:30-16:36)   Links Connect with me at: may@events4anyone.com Website: events4anyone.com LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/mayyeosilvers Facebook: www.facebook.com/mayyeosilvers IG: www.instagram.com/mayyeosilvers TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@mayyeosilvers  FB private group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/events4anyone   Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

“Everybody should find their superpower. You are made unique for a reason,” says Nickolett Hocking, Co-Founder of HRuprise. Nickolett has been in HR for over 15 years, and is committed to shaking up expectations by staying curious, questioning norms, and educating herself on how to create optimal conditions for people to succeed. Driven by a passion for mindfulness and introspection, Nickolett believes that mental health is just as important (if not more important) than physical health. In today's episode, she discusses her experience receiving an ADHD diagnosis in adulthood and what this diagnosis has meant for her as an employee.  She describes some of the strategies that employers can use to better accommodate neurodivergent employees, and challenges the stigmas around ADHD that are still commonplace in the workplace. Nickolett explains that by understanding how ADHD manifests in her life, she has been able to better advocate for what she and others need from employers.  Tune in to this week's episode of Problem Performers to hear Nickolett discuss how to reframe what makes you different as your superpower. Learn how to seek help, ask thoughtful questions, and destigmatize your own thinking about neurodivergence and mental health.    Quotes  • “For women, it is more common to be diagnosed [with neurodivergence] as an adult than it is as a child. And the reason for that is, with men or boys, they tend to show ADHD symptoms more externally… Where for females...we internalize it. We think, ‘Okay, how can we fix this? How do we show up differently?...Why do I have to work so much harder? It looks so easy for someone else.' Not knowing that our brain is actually different. The true brain chemistry is different. Without understanding that, we're just going down this path of, ‘Okay, I'm different. I have to work harder. I have to hide it.'” (18:51-20:02) • “Neurodiverse is this idea that it's normal and acceptable for people to have brains that function differently.” (21:26-21:32) • “One of the things that often manifests with women as adults with ADHD is the lack of self-compassion... You're able to give it away freely to everyone else, but to have that for you is incredibly hard.” (28:48-29:17) • “I am a huge proponent of therapy. I think your mental health is just as important, if not more, than your physical health. So I will scream from the rooftops that everybody should do therapy. There is no stigma around it. Take care of your mind.” (32:49-33:04) • “Everybody should find their superpower. Regardless of a diagnosis or not...you are on this planet for a reason. You are made unique for a reason. How do you find what you're good at and be in your flow?” (33:52-34:06) • “Any neurodivergent diagnosis does not look the same for everyone. So whatever that is, find experts that are familiar with your diagnosis... And get really curious. Get really curious about seeking help, asking questions. You don't have to do it alone.” (36:14-36:49) • “From an employer perspective, I would say educate yourself on what being neurodivergent is. Because I guarantee you, there's a large part of your population that is neurodivergent that you don't know about.” (37:34-37:46)   Links Email Nickolett at nickolett.hocking@designit.com  Connect on LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/in/nickolett-hocking-39a06948/    Some of Nickolett's favorite resources for self-work you can do to understand ADHD and identify your own superpowers: https://instagram.com/adhdoers https://instagram.com/thepsychdoctormd https://www.adhdawarenessmonth.org https://www.additudemag.com   Connect with a coach at https://www.hruprise.com/   Follow us on social media:  • Twitter: https://twitter.com/hruprise • Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hruprise/ • Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/HRuprise/ • LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/hruprise/

Welcome to the Kayleigh O'Keefe Show!   What does it take to awaken our inner servant leader? That is the question that Katrijn Van Oudheusden helps aspiring servant leaders answer. Katrijn is an international bestselling author with her chapter in The X Factor: The Spiritual Secrets Behind Successful Executives and Entrepreneurs and is a coach to servant leaders around the world. In today's episode, Katrijn teaches us the philosophy of letting the ego fall away and going with the flow to achieve a more fulfilling and less stressful life.   Tune into this week's episode of The Kayleigh O'Keefe Show to learn more about: • The concept of servant leadership • How to change your internal landscape and let go of your ego • How to become more attuned to your intuition • And why servant leadership lives within all of us!   Quotes • “For the longest time, servant leadership has been out there as a set of qualities that leaders can embody and a moral ideal to strive for. I want to be a servant leader; I want to do good, be good, and be of service to others.” (3:20-3:40) • “For me, I found out that servant leadership is what we really are. It's our true nature as human beings if we get our ego out of the way.” (5:04-5:16) • “We are not the control mechanism doing our lives. This is really key, because with servant leadership we think it's something we need to figure out and then do.  But it's the opposite. It's not only seeing I can transcend this ego thing, this deficit thing. It's also seeing: I'm not doing my life. I'm being lived. This body and this mind is here in this universe and this reality and it's being lived and I can let go and flow with that.” (12:20-13:01) • “You see very clearly that what is happening is what is supposed to be happening because nobody is controlling anything.” (17:50-17:55) • “We have to fire our minds from the position of CEO. We've made the mind the CEO of everything. We think everything can be solved by using thinking or knowledge or the mind. And that's not true, because our actual nature is more the heart or intuition or being in service, whatever name you give it, awareness, being. That's also and maybe even more what we are than the mind. Because the mind appears to us. Thoughts appear to us and we don't control them.” (31:44-32:27)   Links  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/katrijnvo/  Website: https://katrijnvanoudheusden.com/    Get published with Soul Excellence Publishing: https://soulexcellencepublishing.com/ Visit Kayleigh's website: https://kayleighokeefe.com/  Schedule an Author Discovery Call: https://calendly.com/kayleigh-okeefe/solo-book-writing-publishing     Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

Judy Glassman joins Yuliana on today's episode as she recounts the painful experience of losing her mother to brain cancer, the joy of finding yoga, and transitioning into a new career at a later age for a meaningful life. Judy begins the conversation by describing the challenging event that reshaped her life - losing her mother to brain cancer rapidly and having to bear that weight solely.  She goes on to discuss how she coped by compartmentalizing and finding time to remind herself to breathe, finding peace in yoga, and starting a career in yoga therapy even at a later age. As is the tradition on Phoenix Tales, our guest closes out this moving and inspirational episode by describing the song that most resonates with her life.   Episode Highlights: -   The challenging event that redirected the course of Judy's life -   Bearing the weight of it all -   Coping by compartmentalizing -   The complicated process of grieving as the main caretaker -   How Judy's independence helped her through her mom's death -   Seeking healing in yoga -   What is yoga therapy? -   Starting a new career at a later age -   Planning for the future -   The one song that resonates with Judy's life   Quotes: “For 10 minutes every morning, I allowed myself to do nothing and stare out the window and breathe.” “During that time, I simply was the caretaker with my own ball of emotions .” “No matter how young or old you are, a parent's death follows you and gets more difficult as you get older rather than less difficult.” “I was my mother's first priority. And that changed.” “I ultimately, really, completely healed myself with yoga.” “We get to focus on a person's challenges and not see them as anything negative, but just to be able to give them the power, and help heal them through these modalities.” “I am careful about my own practice so that I don't overdo it.”   Links: https://www.yulianakimgrant.com/phoenix-tales (Phoenix Tales Homepage) https://www.instagram.com/yulianakimgrantofficial/ (Phoenix Tales on Instagram) https://open.spotify.com/show/1heIpPMsG6HbXXIDLmAnEe (Phoenix Tales on Spotify) https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=322043276201679 (Phoenix Tales on Facebook) https://www.judyglassmanyoga.com/ (Judy Glassman Yoga) http://judyglassmanyoga@gmail.com (Email Judy)
