I know in this episode I said I would post it after we released episode 45, but it was such a joy to meet such an inspirational individual that I hope all of our listeners get as much out of this episode as I did recording it. ------------ There are many jobs that deserve higher recognition than they are given, from nursing, to teaching, to safety personnel, all designed to better our society. In the world of wildland firefighting, their job is to save lives while also preserving the environment at the cost of their own protection. In this Bonus Episode (one of many that will be released over the next several months), I talk with Lea Bossler, wildland firefighter and mental health advocate as she walks me through the unknown ‘extreme-ness' of wildland firefighting in America. From poor healthcare to mental and physical conditions that well exceed a 9-5 job, she explains in beautiful clarity what this profession means to her and those of her colleagues invested in ‘the mission'. This calling attracts many people with ADHD, which can be linked to trauma, but at the same time provides a community and brotherhood, whose bonds cannot be broken. To learn more about Lea's work, I highly suggestion reading her article available through Mystery Ranch called ‘What happens with your world ends?' https://www.mysteryranch.com/backbone-lea-bossler?srsltid=AfmBOoqwutpaqbtJb13RTiq_ALSV1nLe14VoQLimF0Biaf2Hn4ei24JR Also, please consider supporting the Wildland Firefighter Foundation, which supports Wildland firefighters and their families when tragedies strike: https://wffoundation.org/ And finally, while I do mention that this is the second to last of our podcast episodes, in an ideal world we would love to do more. But to do so, we need your support. If you could follow us on Apple and Spotify and write a review, we would greatly appreciate it. #coffeeandcocktailspodcast #wildlandfirefighting #mentalhealth #mysteryranch #wff

S10e13: Lee Klinger Lesser – What Does This Moment Ask of Me?

The Hoffman Podcast

Lee Klinger Lesser is our guest today. A graduate of the Hoffman Process, Lee has led Sensory Awareness somatic workshops worldwide for many decades. She teaches workshops to diverse groups, including veterans and wildland firefighters. Lee led and co-founded a non-profit organization to work with military veterans: Veteran's PATH. While she no longer leads this organization, Lee still works with Veterans, many of whom have graduated from the Hoffman Process. As a Hoffman grad, Lee is familiar with the "Left Road, Right Road" tool, a choice point that occurs many times each day of our lives. Lee speaks to how crucial presence is in choosing the steps of our lives and the direction our lives take. The question she often holds is, What does this moment ask of me? In each moment, we can ask ourselves this powerful question. It's a way to slow down and realize that everything that exists is here and only here. Each moment asks us to stop and sense our next step, or in Hoffman terms, whether or not we will go down the Left Road or Right Road. The capacity Lee has to express the power of an embodied life in words is extraordinary. Listen in as she offers an articulated path to conscious choice in each moment of our lives. She says, "If we keep offering what we can offer, and we have confidence in our own possibility to have impact and our capacity to respond, then we're not going to have regret. We may not be able to change things, maybe we're not going to be able to change what we want, but the way we're living and what we offer is coming from our own love and our own vitality and our own ability to respond." We hope you enjoy this deep and rich conversation with Lee and Drew. Content warning: This episode references suicide. If you or someone you know is considering suicide, you can call the US National Suicide Prevention Program at 800-273-8255 (or simply 988), or message the crisis text hotline at 741741. More about Lee Klinger Lesser: Lee studied Sensory Awareness for 33 years in the United States with Charlotte Selver, the founder of this practice. Through Return to Our Senses, she's been leading workshops since 1976, in English and Spanish. Lee sees over and over again the gift that this practice brings into the lives of so many people and into our world, which is in such great need of people living with awareness, resilience, and presence. She has reached into communities facing significant challenges to offer the resource and refuge of this practice. Lee led and co-founded a non-profit organization to work with military veterans: Veteran's PATH —Peace, Acceptance, Transformation, Honor. She led this work for 12 years, stepping away from a formal role in the organization in Fall 2019. Under new leadership, the organization dissolved in 2023. Lee still facilitates programs for veterans and honors this work as some of the most meaningful and life-changing work she has had the privilege to do. She witnessed veterans open to devastating experiences, face, and transform pain into new possibilities. Lee continues to be inspired by the profound commitment to service and the loving dedication to community that she experienced in her work with veterans. Lee's work and the Climate Crisis: Over the past six years, Lee has been helping to develop programs for Wildland firefighters on the front lines of the Climate Crisis. These firefighters are seeking support to meet the overwhelming challenges they are facing. Whether we realize it or not, we are all on the frontlines of the Climate Crisis. This has led Lee to develop programs to integrate the practice of Sensory Awareness with responding to the Climate Crisis. She is dedicated to bringing forward the core lesson she has learned from her years of practice: “There is no place to run, there is no escape from being with what is.” This is especially poignant and true as we realize that this Earth is the only home we have. We cannot run from what is happening.

WHO WE AREAs a group of Rural Volunteer Firefighters, our Fire Department has built our firefighter training from both old and new tactics in the fire service and adapted them to fit the realities of equipment, manpower, and costs around what our community requires. WHAT WE DOWe create video, audio and written word content to share these training and tactics methods with our Brothers and Sisters in our extended fire families, and to showcase to those that may be interested in becoming firefighters the fun you can have and the amazing skills and abilities you get to learn, whilst keeping the lives of the people around you safe! WHY WE SHAREFirefighters are problem solvers whose role requires them to be on their best day whilst others are having their worst day, and while we do not claim to be perfect we are willing to put our lives on the line to try. It's during the trying that we continue to develop the mindset, tactics, and training that allow us to be effective, safe and successful where it's needed the most, and by sharing our experiences we hope that it may help other Fire Departments in creating what works for them to help bring everyone home safe.THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORTIf you would like to help support us then you can visit us by clicking the link to your favorite social media platform below to Subscribe and be the first to see more of our content! California wildfires ripped through L.A. this year, killing 29 people, destroying more than 18,000 buildings, and putting wildland fires back into the headlines. But what's it like being one of the poorly-paid workers sent in to risk your life to fight the flames?  Wildland firefighter Nathan Bell has ‘held the line' across the United States: in Elk City, Idaho; on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon in Utah; and in the desert conditions of Sedona, Arizona. For 16 hour workdays, for weeks away from home, he will hike up a mountainside towards a raging fire with a 40 pound backpack on his shoulders, and a chainsaw over his shoulder. And his starting salary is less than a worker at Burger King... In conversation with Olly, he exposes the back-breaking, exhilarating life of a wildland firefighter - and the unspoken trauma so many of his peers experience ‘between seasons'... _______ Meanwhile, in The Zeitgeist, Ollie Peart investigates the trend for A.I. makeovers.  From LolaAI, the ‘stylist and shopping copilot' baked in to Open Wardrobe, to the at-home body scans offered by Bodymapp, can Ollie get himself a fresh Spring look - using only A.I? As ever, frankly, the results are mixed… _______ Elsewhere, down the Foxhole, Alix Fox pops into Kiiroo to see how their teledildonics have adapted to the world of OnlyFans - and answers a listener question from a new Mum struggling with sex after breastfeeding.  Once a source of pleasure, her boobs now feel sore, sensitive, and more like functional tools than instruments of intimacy. Will they ever feel sexy again? With the help of breastfeeding peer support worker Emilie Wardle, Frome Birth Talk's Lucy Plummer and sex and relationship therapist Rhian Kivits, Alix explores considers the under-discussed issues of milk mishaps in the bedroom and babies getting a little too handsy; and proposes new erogenous zones for when ‘boobs are off the table'... _______ Music this month comes from Manchester indie band The Lottery Winners, and their infectious single, ‘Turn Around'. It's our Record of the Month, and it's out now. _______ SUPPORT US - every penny counts: THANK YOU SO MUCH for your generous donations - independent shows like ours only exist with your support:

Our next stop is a visit with Jeff Lozano, a brand ambassador at San Diego's Ballast Point Brewing, one of the foundational craft beer makers in a city famous for its great beer. The journey then heads up Interstate 5 to Carlsbad, where we catch up with Eric Bost, a prolific chef behind the newly opened Wildland and the soon-to-open tasting menu restaurant Lilo. To close, Aliza and Matt share many more discoveries from their road trip around Southern California.More places we visited: Rare Society, City Tacos, Tribute Pizza, Wayfarer Bread, Aisu Creamery, Little Fox Cups and Cones, Wrench & Rodent. You can visit the Salk Institute for Biological Studies by reserving a spot on a weekly docent-led tour. And some great hotels to keep in mind: Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa and the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa.To donate to California wildfire relief, visit Restaurants Care. This very special episode of This Is TASTE is supported by Visit California. While this episode was recorded before the LA wildfires in January, all of the restaurants featured are open for business, and we can't think of a better time to pay California a visit for your own food-obsessed road trip. Dining out in LA is one way to help support the city, and these truly were some amazing places. Since January 7, wildfires have been devastating the Los Angeles area. In the span of 10 days, several different fires, including the Palisades and Eaton fires, have burned more than 40,000 acres and destroyed more than 12,000 structures. At least 25 people have died. The threat of fire is growing, especially in zones known as the wildland-urban interface, or WUI. That's where unoccupied wildland and human developments meet and mingle. Think of a city sprawling around a forest, for example. In the US, around one in three homes is in this type of high-risk zone.So what's the science behind urban fires? And how do we protect ourselves in the face of them?Ira Flatow talks with Dr. Kimiko Barrett, senior wildfire researcher and policy analyst at the research group Headwaters Economics in Bozeman, Montana; and Dr. Alexandra Syphard, senior research scientist at the Conservation Biology Institute in San Diego, California.Transcripts for each segment will be available after the show airs on sciencefriday.com. He argues that we need a new approach to fighting fire—one that emphasizes preparedness and a change in the way we think about our relationship to nature, and to fire itself.

Well the confirmation process for Trump 2.0's cabinet members has begun, and a clown car filled with barely-functioning senators have already made their presence felt. We will listen to a few clips from that, pick through some other news up front, including the comment Donald Trump made about the need for an External Revenue Service which has made many people hope that this will be the thing that replaces the IRS. Insurance Insider, Chris Hamilton, returns for a brief follow up to the now forgotten December assassination of Brian Thompson, and to make a congressional wish list for industry reform in the coming years. Our second half guest is Scott Mulvaney (LiveTheFuel.com), and he is a veteran fireman who comes with years of experience combatting blazes in the wilderness. "Wildfire" is the word we tend to use when we talk about what Los Angeles has been dealing with the past week. But Lori Moore-Merrell, the U.S. Fire Administrator for the Federal Emergency Management Agency used a different word, when she spoke to NPR this morning. She described a "conflagration." Saying they're not wildland fires with trees burning. They're structure to structure fire spread. They may have started at the suburban fringe, but they didn't stay there.
