Tónlist í þættinum: Þá veistu svarið / Ingibjörg Stefánsdóttir (Jon Kjell Seljeseth, texti Friðrik Sturluson) Náum aðeins andanum / Daði Freyr og Ásdís María (Daði Freyr) Everything Now / Arcade Fire (Edwin Butler, Jeremy Gara, Regine Chassagne, Richard Reed Parry, Tim Kingsbury, William Butler) UMSJÓN GUÐRÚN GUNNARSDÓTTIR OG GUNNAR HANSSON
In this episode of The Art of Aging Mindfully, I share the incredible journey of creating Jai Yoga Shala, my yoga studio in the heart of the Hudson Valley. Two years ago, I asked myself, "What do I do with my 50s?" That question inspired me to take a leap of faith and dedicate myself to serving a local community instead of returning to the demanding pace of touring. In this episode, I reflect on:The inspiration behind Jai Yoga Shala and why creating a community-centered space felt like the right path for this stage of my life. The challenges I faced—like negotiating leases, dealing with unreliable contractors, and navigating licensing processes—and the personal growth that came from overcoming them. The beauty of the finished space, which not only aligns with my vision but exceeds my expectations. It has truly become a sanctuary for connection, practice, and growth. My hopes and intentions for the future of Jai Yoga Shala, including creating a thriving community and welcoming both in-person and livestream participants into this shared journey.I'm so excited to invite you to join me at Jai Yoga Shala—whether you stop by for a class, attend an event, or participate online. Let's grow together in this space as we explore the art of mindful aging.Thank you for listening, and I look forward to connecting with you soon!Subscribe & Follow:Instagram:@theartofagingmindfully@jaiyogashalaTO SUPPORT THE ART OF AGING MINDFULNESS PODCAST:patreon.com/jaisugrimHealth and Longevity Coaching with Jai:https://theartofagingmindfully.com/To Train with Jai in "Yoga for Longevity Classes:"https://jaiyogashala.com/daily-schedule/If you enjoyed this episode, please leave a review and share it with others who might benefit from these insights!

During the course of recording for the Sound Bath Sessions project, I wanted to see how sound baths were like in other countries around Asia. I scheduled a trip to the Philippines for a few days to see family and record a few sound baths. I was able to get in contact with three practitioners in or near Manila: Rosan Cruz, LJ Navera, and Arianne Olegario. Arianne began her journey of self-healing around 10 years ago when the life she had planned out for herself couldn't happen. She has learned Reiki, Innerdance, and more recently sound baths for her own self-healing and the healing of others. Arianne works as a consultant for USAID specializing in gender equality for development projects in southeast Asia. Arianne plays metal singing bowls at Yoga Shala, Manila.

Helena first stepped onto the Ashtanga mat when she was 19 years old. Coming out of her rebellious teen years, filled with drug abusing and running away from home. She was instantly bewitched by the method and has been practicing asana along with self-inquiry, ever since. In 2008, after 6 years of daily practice and studying Ayurveda to become a therapist, Helena made her first trip to KPJAYI in Mysore, India, and also spent time in Kerala to further her studies in Ayurveda. In 2010, after a one month training with Sharath Jois, (director of KPJAYI in Mysore) she was granted Authorisation Level 1 and received Level 2 in 2014. While practicing and teaching in Brazil, Helena learned from many famous teachers including Fabio Sayão, Matthew Vollmer, and Osnir Cugenotta. For almost a decade she taught daily Mysore in São Paulo, offering classes in many different centers before founding her own Yoga Shala, Ashtanga Pitanga, where she directed and taught the Mysore program for 2 years. A huge shift in her life happened when she moved to London in 2016, where she ran the Mysore Program at Triyoga Chelsea for the next two years. She began teaching internationally in other countries like Portugal, France, Germany and Purple Valley, Goa (while assisting Mark Robberds - listen to our episode #57 with Mark Robberds HERE). Helena continued to deepen her yoga studies with an intensive period of study with Gregor Maehle and Monica Gauci. In 2019, she gave birth to her beautiful little boy Leornado and they decided to move to Valencia, Spain, with her partner. She's now living in Palma de Mallorca, and has opened up EARTH YOGA in Santa Catalina. Arianne plays metal singing bowls for these sessions and all tracks were recorded at Yoga Shala in Quezon City. In the beginning of the track, you can hear her say in the beginning of the track, "creation and communication". This is the intention that the practitioner puts on the sound bath. Her session starts by sounding individual bowls several times before moving onto the next. Sometimes each strike can have a different energy; tapping the bowl harder or softer can release hidden overtones in a bowl. She slowly begins to incorporate more different combinations of bowls with dynamic tempos that change the depth of your experience. The busy street below can be heard creating a great sense of place.

Welcome to Episode #44 of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast! This week, I welcome Gergentia Shoombe onto the show. She is a yoga teacher from Namibia. She teaches power yoga, yin yoga, and yoga alignment at the Virgin Active Windhoek clubs and at the Yoga Shala. She has been teaching yoga full time since 2016. After a serious car crash, and doctors saying she'll never walk again, Gergentia beat the odds through yoga and eastern healing techniques like Qi Gong and Reiki. My conversation with Gergentia Shoombe, a yoga teacher from Namibia, was so astounding as we took a deep look at the power of the body and spirit to heal. I hope that this conversation gave you a glimpse into how everything can come together even as it falls apart. If you're looking to tune into a podcast episode that is all about inner strength and the strength community gives you, then this is the conversation for you. What to expect in the Yoga In Namibia episode of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast After a serious car crash, Gergentia knew she needed healing, and she found meditation. She couldn't sit, stand, or walk— but she found peace in meditation as she was on her journey of healing. In the beginning, yoga was simply meditation for her, before she even learned asanas. In all actuality, she didn't think her body could do asanas, as after the car crash, her doctors thought she would never walk again. She had never even tried asanas before her car crash, and it wasn't until after she had done some healing therapy work with Qi-Gong and Reiki. In Swaziland, a monk introduced Gergentia to bhakti yoga and Maha-matra chanting which led her to change her whole life and led her to study holistic healing therapy. She applied to do a yoga teacher training with a the Africa Yoga Project. For the skimmers - What's in the yoga in Namibia episode? Being desperate for healing after a serious car crash Learned meditation from a monk in Swaziland Stayed in the Hari Krishna temple for 2 years while she was studying holistic healing Wanted to run away from yoga asanas Everything comes together even as it falls apart Yoga is life itself, it's coming together The power of seeing yourself clearer Connect with Gergentia Shoombe https://www.instagram.com/Holisticyogini/ https://www.instagram.com/oshanayogaproject/ https://www.facebook.com/gshoombe https://www.facebook.com/oshanayogaclub Want more? This week Tyler Langdale, Sacramento native and owner of Yoga Shala Sacramento and Radical Retreats joins us to talk about yoga, community, spirituality and travel. After waking up in Sacramento on Sunday morning and learning of the yet another tragic mass shooting in our own downtown, this previously recorded episode feels timely. Tyler (my older brother) and I chat about what helps us get through and make sense of hard situations and move forward with less fear. We explore the importance of living out one's purpose and doing the inner work necessary in order to grow, shift and change. Tyler describes how our upbringing in the religion of Christian Science helped lay the foundation for his study of yogic philosophy in his early 20s. This ultimately led to him opening Yoga Shala almost 12 years ago, which he co-owns with his wife and her sister. With our recent discussion on the Enneagram and whether the origin of an activity should dictate whether or not we participate in that activity, we travel back in time to revisit our discussion on yoga from a year and a half ago.Yoga is prevalent in our culture today but its Hindu roots bring controversy in the church over whether or not we as Christians should be practicing yoga. In this podcast, we explore the history of yoga and look at scripture to see whether yoga is something we as Christians should think twice about before practicing. This is part one of the two-part conversation. Check out episode 40 for the rest of the discussion.***Disclaimer: this is a group of people's experiences and thoughts. This does not represent the thoughts or beliefs of Providence Church, Citylight Church, or Holy Yoga. This conversation exists to have us think more deeply about our daily routines and their impact on us.

Ritika and Eran are the founders of Sattva Sanctuary, Australia. It is the first of its kind, a sister center to the primary Sattva Retreat in Rishikesh, India. Anand Ji came to visit this incredible land first as it was just taking shape. After sitting a deep meditation in the Yoga Shala surrounded by towering gum trees and wild bushlands, he rose up and extending his blessing for this Sattva Sanctuary, he said, "This is a place where people can go deep."Eran and Ritika work alongside this beautiful land to bring nature's vision to life. They talk about that creative process with the perspective of true yogis. They are leading examples of what it means to be householder Yogis. Together they live an integrative life of spiritual devotion as the foundation. That integrative spiritual life has blessed them to raise a daughter, operate international businesses and be the pillars of the Sattva Sanctuary. If there was any reservation that a spiritual life needs to look a certain way, Ritika and Eran are the total myth-busters! It is all a life of spiritual devotion and practice that has been the driving force for the way things have unfolded. As both householder Yogis share, it is a fine art to listen and allow that great power to guide you. Both Ritika and Eran are masterful Jyotish (Vedic Astrologers) supporting the community with open arms and the integrative practice of Sattva Yoga. Their expertise in the area of relationship consultation brings a very relevant application to this timeless Jyotish wisdom.Next time you're passing through Byron Bay, Australia, make sure to stop into the Sattva Sanctuary for meditation, yoga nature walks and a cup of chai!www.sattvasanctuary.com.auwww.ritikaflow.comwww.livingholistic.lifewww.sattvasanctuary.com.auwww.ritikaflow.comwww.livingholistic.life@sattvayogaacademy@ritikaflow@living_holistic@theanandmehrotra@maxiji

Grischa was a hard-working young software architect in the exciting early days of the world wide web and raved through Berlin’s legendary techno scene on the weekends. He was almost 30 when he dropped into a Shivananda Yoga class and confused his physiological fitness and flexibility with yogic qualities. Blessed be his ignorance! His hunger for more drove him to the only Aṣṭāṅga class in Berlin which left him sore for a week and completely hooked. He soon stopped partying and drinking and started teaching ashtanga to friends. He eventually gave up his IT career and opened Berlin’s first Aṣṭāṅga Yoga Shala. For the first years his excited ego kept rushing him “up” the ladder of the Aṣṭāṅga Yoga series’. However, he started to wonder if it was taking the right path. As he questioned the real meaning of yoga he began to question teachers’ techniques of strong adjustments etc. He felt the unhealthy power structures did not meet traces of yogic ideals. Ready to give up on Aṣṭāṅga, Grischa met Richard Freeman whose unique teaching approach opened his eyes for the mind-blowing world of the ancient scriptures. In addition he saw how egotistical motivations taint our actions, even Yoga practice. Paradoxically he also realized the Aṣṭāṅga method needed to appeal to my ego to keep him engaged on the path towards self-inquiry. All this fundamentally changed the way he lived his life, practiced, and taught Yoga. Grischa loves the Aṣṭāṅga Vinyāsa Yoga method. Mysore Style could easily make it the safest traditional Hatha Yoga practice system. However, he feels this yogic toolbox has not always been used wisely. Injuries are the most obvious symptoms of an ego-driven practice and teaching approach. Just like learning to play an instrument well for music we must practice posture, breath, philosophy etc. with good technique. Yet, both music and Yoga can only arise from effortless concentration and introspection, not from blindly following rituals and rules. Yoga Sutras & The Environment Above all, two factors have initiated the most fundamental and most challenging transformation of all. Grischa started using Yoga Sūtra’s Sadhana chapter as the reference of all Yoga practice and teaching principles. Even more importantly the birth of his two children broadened his perspective on literally everything. He realized that an infinite number of beings will have to live with the effects of our collective war against the planet. Karma is unfailing. Yoga means looking at all our actions without filters, without ignoring or justifying any of it. He realized he had been fueling global warming with tank loads of kerosene for an obscene yogic self-improvement trip for decades. Grischa decided to completely stop air travel and started to fight against our collective irresponsibility. His dream is that all Yogis on the planet wake up and become models for a sustainable and selfless lifestyle. Preserving the planet for our children is more important than all yoga poses that have ever been practiced together. We hope you enjoy this yoga podcast with Grischa Steffin. You can find more about his on his website.
#020: Prem & Radha Carlisi Scott talks to Prem and Radha Carlisi (and their lovely dogs) about their friendship since 2008 and how they've evolved over an incredibly close, and tender, twelve years of knowing each other. --- We'd like to invite you to join our growing Stillpoint Online Ashtanga Yoga and Mindfulness community. We live stream Ashtanga Yoga assisted self practice and guided classes with evening mindfulness sessions over 6 days with Scott Johnson and the Stillpoint teaching faculty. It's a beautiful way to navigate these times... --- Anthony ‘Prem’ Carlisi and Heather ‘Radha’ Carlisi first came together as a teaching team in Sri Lanka in 2007. They felt a powerful synergy between their combined energy as teachers, which led them to continue to teach together internationally. They were married in 2013. In December 2008 they travelled to Bali, where in November 2009 they established the Ashtanga Yoga Bali Research Center (AYBRC). In their shala they teach in the tradition of K. Pattabhi Jois, with whom they both studied for many years. Prem first travelled to Mysore to study in 1978, and Radha in 1995 having begun her study of Ashtanga yoga with Chuck Miller in 1990. Following the example set by Krishnamacharya, they adapt their teaching to the individual needs of each student. They also apply their knowledge Ayurveda to their unique teaching style, blending the elements of Ashtanga yoga and Ayurveda to help students to achieve a balanced lifestyle well beyond their asana practise. Prem and Radha have many shared at AYBRC. You can find out more about their teaching schedule here. Finding Humility Together - Prem and Radha Carlisi In this moving conversation Scott, Prem and Radha share intimate and tender memories of their friendship over the past 12 years. Prem and Radha are deeply open and honest about how their relationship managed the passing of Prem's daughter Shanti in 2012 and how they navigated people coming to their Yoga Shala in Bali and their own yoga practices. We are left with hope.... In this deeply moving conversation Prem & Radha share: The challenges they’ve faced running a Mysore shala from Bali during the COVID-19 pandemic. How Scott contacted Prem in 2008 after reading ‘The Only Way Out is In’, and ended up hosting both Prem and Radha for a London workshop. Prem’s motivation for writing his book - to share his perspective as a ‘regular guy’ so that people would know that yoga is accessible to anyone. That after Radha’s first yoga class - which she found in the Yellow Pages - she told the teacher (Chuck Miller) that she was going to be a yoga teacher. About the incredible support Radha has given Prem in his work and in his personal life. About how they set up Ashtanga Yoga Bali together, and how it felt like everything was falling into place for them. That everything collapsed in 2013 with the death of Prem’s daughter, Shanti. How they managed to keep the shala open, with crowds coming to see them, while struggling to come to terms with this tragic loss. The thoughtless comments that Prem received about how, as a long term yogi, he should be able to deal with grief. How grief forces a deeper perspective to Ashtanga yoga practise beyond the physical. That teaching - being able to give to others - can be a solace, and that suffering can bring empathy. The sense of humbling humiliation that Prem felt, in the face of such grief after this life-changing loss, despite external material successes. Their intentions around organising Ashtanga yoga conferences, hoping to keep the community connected after K. Pattabhi Jois died. The responsibility that senior teachers have to pass on the subtler layers of practise that move beyond the physical. About why Ashtanga yoga is a constant process of discovery, rather than a static set of rules. How important it is to meet all students as individuals, and that teaching this way becomes a dance. That an ‘advanced’ practise isn’t necessary to experience the principles of Ashtanga yoga practise: breath, bandha, and drishti. The relationship between the ethereal aspects of practise and how they relate to our physical being. Learning to dance with the people in our lives and with ourselves: Nataraja, Shiva, the aspect of life and death. How Prem’s practise has become more contemplative over time, spending hours in meditation. How Radha has become more forgiving of herself, and that in finding more freedom in her practise she has a better understanding of who she is, rather than who she thinks she’s supposed to be. ‘'I've been wanting to have this conversation with my dear friends Prem and Radha since I started the Stillpoints Podcast. It is one of the tenderest and most open conversations I have had and I loved the candid honesty that both Prem and Radha bring. They share how they have navigated grief together and that this is now the foundation of their relationship. We're left with a sense of hope. That it's a dance... Today's chat is with Mark Robberds, Oliver Crossley, and Scott White who together, formed the Yoga Myth Busters. Their hope is to educate and clarify some of those pesky myths that continue to circulate and persist. Like - are your hips always need to be squared? Is it true that anyone can do anything with just practice? And my favorite: No pain, no gain - true or false? Listen and find out! Mark is a certified Ashtanga yoga teacher and movement specialist. And Oliver and Scott are both physiotherapists and yoga practitioners who use yoga in their therapeutic work. Bibi Lorenzetti is (obvious to anyone who meets her) a star. We are absolutely delighted to have her on the podcast. But one thing you will find, as Madonna put it, when you are a star there is probably something wrong with you. And, like Russell and Harmony, Bibi shares body dysmorphia and has suffered with anorexia nervosa. The urgency to “progress” at the physical side of the yoga practice, often comes at the expense of one's health, which is traced more deeply to an old feeling of insecurity. We talk about these issues, as well as the lengths we have gone to combat this insidious genetic disease, and how we have found healing from it as well. Bibi discusses her transient childhood, arriving in Houston from Italy, with zero English language as a 10 year old. This was followed by a move to Spain as a 16 year old, where her body blossomed and her anorexia exploded. Eventually, after many years, she settled into a place of health and healing through her relationship to Barbara Verrochi and Kristen Leigh at the Yoga Shala in NY, where she dedicated herself to the practice of Ashtanga yoga. Bibi, very honestly discusses how even at the height of her powers in the Ashtanga yoga practice, while finishing Third Series, the dreaded "Ashtangorexia" continued to haunt her as she contemplated having a child. It never really fully disappears… but we can learn to see it for what it is, a negative thought pattern. Her decision to mindfully and consciously sacrifice herself to motherhood is an inspiration. And all of the lessons and awakenings that have come from allowing this new transformation to organically unfold has truly been a gift beyond anything she could have imagined. Bibi Lorenzetti is a Level 2 Authorized Ashtanga Yoga Teacher & Holistic Health Coach. She received her blessing to teach Ashtanga Yoga in 2014, from the KPJAYI Institute in Mysore, India, where she has had the honor of assisting R. Sharath Jois multiple times over the years. She taught at the Shala Yoga House in New York City for over 6 years and is now the owner of her own Shala in Newburgh, NY: Ashtanga Yoga Newburgh (AYNBNY). Bibi has been featured in Glamour Magazine, and in the Netflix Michael O'Neill documentary 'On Yoga: The Architecture of Peace.' In part one of our Christianity + Yoga discussion, we take a look at the history of yoga and its roots in eastern religion. This episode, we explore Holy Yoga and whether we should be cautious in saying it is a “unique space where God will meet us and work,” when the Lord hasn’t stated that in His word. We also discuss how Christian liberty relates to yoga and whether we should practice it in the church. Yoga is prevalent in our culture today but its Hindu roots bring controversy in the church over whether or not we as Christians should be practicing yoga. In this podcast, we explore the history of yoga, share our experiences with yoga, and look at scripture to see whether yoga is something we as Christians should think twice about before practicing. This is part one of the two-part conversation. Stay tuned for the next episode. As always, join the conversation by emailing us. In Episode 5, we sat down with Janna Kretzmar, founder of The Earthchild Project to hear about their organisation as well as their plan to build a Yoga Shala in various schools in Khayelitsha. The Earthchild Project has identified the need for these children to have a space that is quiet and safe. They have teamed up with The Shala Cape Town Yoga School to build a Yoga Shala in the form of a environmentally-friendly classroom, which will empower these children to inspire dreaming and visioningDONATE HERE: https://www.givengain.com/ap/yogashala/Find out more about Earthchild Project: http://earthchildproject.org/Email Janna: janna@earthchildproject.orgMusic produced by Dan Schultz https://soundcloud.com/itsdanschultz / dan@fragmentsdc.com. Vocals: Tarryn JamesABOUT EARTHCHILD PROJECTThe Earthchild Project is a Non-Profit Organisation operating in the Western Cape, South Africa who offer complimentary education to under-resourced schools with a focus on the environment, health and self-development. Their approach to education is holistic, focused on health and wellness, lifeskills and the environment through different programmes integrated with the schools curriculum. They do this mainly through yoga and meditation, and organic gardening and environmental education.ABOUT JANNAAfter traveling and working on an eco village in South America for one year, Janna Kretzmar arrived back in Cape Town at the beginning of 2006 with her heart set on one thing – to find a way to transform our schools. She began volunteering at a Primary School, setting up an organic vegetable garden and running guided meditations with the children. Health and Wellness was added to the mix because it seemed futile to teach children to reconnect with nature and with spirit if they were not taking care of their bodies as well.During the year Janna came into contact with many NGOs and volunteers who were doing amazing work in schools. However, she observed that once they left, the projects they had initiated were seldom maintained. Teachers just did not have the time or energy to sustain these extra initiatives. It was these observations that inspired Janna to create the model which later developed into the Earthchild Project. The initial model was to place a full time facilitator in a school whose role it would be to introduce and maintain holistic education. These initiatives would be complimented by the involvement of partnering organizations who were already experts in their particular areas. From there the project snowballed and within two months there three facilitators, three schools, three donors and six partnering NGOs. And so it was that the Earthchild Project was born.

Við hjá jons.is höfum sérstakan áhuga á því þegar fólk stofnar fyrirtæki sem eru óhefðbundin ef svo má segja. Eygló stofnaði fyrirtækið sitt jakkafatajoga 2013. Hún og hennar fólk koma í heimsókn í fyrirtæki á skrifstofutíma og gera sem þau kalla jakkafata jóga, þeas jóga í vinnufötunum. Hér má lesa nánar um hvernig jakkafatajoga virkar. Á jakkafatajoga.is segir um Eygló " Eygló kynntist jóga fyrst í æsku í gegnum móður sína sem stóð fyrir því að fá þekkta íslenska jógakennara til að koma og halda námskeið úti á landi þar sem fjölskyldan bjó. Það var þó ekki fyrr en sumarið 2008 sem Eygló fór sjálf að stunda jóga og má segja að hún hafi kolfallið fyrir áhrifunum sem iðkunin hafði á hana. Strax í janúar 2009 hóf hún svo jógakennaranám hjá Guðjóni Bergmann með það að markmiði að dýpka eigin iðkun. Þó ætlunin hafi upphaflega ekki verið að leggja stund á jógakennslu í kjölfarið, þá hóf hún að kenna reglulega tíma snemma sama ár og með tímanum fór hún að kenna sína eigin tíma undir merkjum Yoga með Eygló. Eygló hefur því stundað jógakennslu frá 2009. Árið 2013 stofnaði hún svo Jakkafatajóga með það að markmiði að koma hreyfingu inn í daglega dagskrá almennings og þannig útrýma kyrrsetukvillu.
