We are thrilled to converse with the legendary Bruce Merrin today!  Bruce is the mastermind behind the renowned Celebrity Speakers Bureau and has been a driving force in shaping the entertainment industry for over fifty years! With an unparalleled ability to spot talent and bring together remarkable individuals, he has curated a legacy that has left an indelible mark on Hollywood. From the quick-witted banter of Johnny Carson to the heartfelt charm exuded by Michael Landon, and from the unmatched charisma of Muhammad Ali to his mesmerizing encounter with the iconic Elvis Presley, Bruce has had the privilege of experiencing captivating stories from the forefront of the industry. Join us as we embark on an unforgettable journey through the glitz, glamor, and untold secrets of the stars through the eyes of the man who made it his mission to bring their voice to the world! Where it all started for Bruce It all began fifty years ago with his first celebrity client, the iconic Michael Landon! In a lunch meeting, Michael shared his excitement about a new show he was working on called Little House on the Prairie. Bruce immediately took Michael to appear on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, who happened to adore him! After the show, Johnny invited Bruce and Michael to his lavish Malibu home for dinner and proposed a life-changing idea. He suggested that Bruce start a celebrity speakers bureau, with Johnny as the first client. Bruce agreed, and Michael Landon declared himself the second client! The next day, Ed McMahon reached out to Bruce to express his desire to join the bureau.  The Influence of His Mother  Bruce credits his beloved mother for the incredible opportunities and successes he experienced throughout his career. From encouraging him to pursue journalism classes in high school to suggesting he apply to UCLA's prestigious film school, his mother played a pivotal role in shaping his path. Her guidance led him to secure a job at MGM Studios, where he worked in the renowned Thalberg building. Bruce's Mother  As a pioneer in public relations, Bruce's mother operated a successful Hollywood-based entertainment PR firm. She recognized Bruce's talents and potential and made him an enticing offer to join her at General Service Movie Studios, where she continued teaching him the intricacies of the PR business. In the three years Bruce worked with his mother, he gained invaluable knowledge and experience, particularly in handling high-profile authors.   Simon and Schuster Securing the account of Simon and Schuster, the world's largest publisher, was a remarkable achievement because it allowed Bruce and his mother to handle the monthly PR for all their top authors. A Remarkable Invitation Within his first week at MGM, Bruce received a remarkable invitation from the president himself- a lunch meeting with Elvis Presley! That encounter marked the beginning of Bruce's involvement in handling the publicity for Elvis's film, Elvis on Tour, which cemented his connection with the legendary performer. Elvis Presley  Elvis, known for his humility, treated everyone with kindness and generosity, whether they were part of the film crew or fellow performers. Bruce was privileged to work with Elvis on multiple films and witnessed the star's genuine thoughtfulness. After completing a movie, Elvis would gift extravagant presents to the entire staff, including directors, producers, grips, and sound technicians! Muhammad Ali and Jackie Robinson Muhammad Ali and Jackie Robinson left indelible marks on Bruce, not only for their athletic achievements but also for their resilience and powerful messages. Bruce had had meaningful exchanges with both of them about addressing racism and its ugly consequences. Ali and Robinson exemplified strength and integrity in their respective fields and left lasting impressions on Bruce's life and career. Scott Carpenter's Troubled Appearance   Bruce had a notable incident involving Scott Carpenter, one of the original seven astronauts, whom he had booked for a speaking engagement in Orlando. Scott arrived intoxicated, leaving the event organizers in a difficult situation. In spite of the embarrassment, Bruce still considered Scott's well-being and urged him to seek help for his alcoholism. Scott later addressed his struggles in a book and found a path to recovery.  Custom-Tailoring Celebrity Talks  When booking celebrities, Bruce connects them with certified meeting planners to discuss the event's theme, demographics, and audience. That allows the celebrities to craft talks that will resonate with the attendees on a deeper level. Randy Otto  Randy Otto has a deep understanding of Churchill's persona. That, combined with his dedication to studying and embodying the iconic figure, allows him to deliver impactful speeches that provide insights into managing businesses effectively. Bruce emphasizes the power of well-crafted impersonations and personalized talks in captivating audiences and making a lasting impression.  Negotiating Terms  When negotiating with celebrities, Bruce emphasizes the importance of being clear about the keynote fee and establishing additional activities, such as roundtables or photo sessions, as part of the overall agreement.  Bruce's Advice for Negotiating Celebrity Bookings  Bruce highlights the importance of setting clear expectations when booking celebrities and negotiating their terms. By establishing a comprehensive agreement upfront, event planners will ensure a smooth and satisfactory experience for all parties involved.  Bio: Bruce Merrin I was born in Louisville, KY, and my client Muhammad Ali loved that! We talked about that a lot! I graduated from Grant High School in San Fernando Valley, CA, and my best friends were Tom Selleck, Mickey Dolenz (The Monkees), Mike Curb (Curb Records Nashville), Mike Post (12 number-one hits to TV series like Hill St. Blues and Law and Order), John Washbrook (TV star of My friend Flicka). My girlfriend at Grant was Cheryl from The Mouseketeers Show, with gorgeous blonde hair and blue eyes. I graduated from the legendary UCLA Film School.  While I was there, I starred in the Broadway hit play Tea and Sympathy. I had the lead role. Unforgettable experience! My acting teacher recommended only me to audition for Hollywood Squares. I got on the show and won the Secret Square with Paul Lynde, with tens of thousands of dollars in prizes! My mom suggested after graduating from UCLA that I apply for a job at MGM Studios. I got a gem job working in the Thalberg Building. My first client was Elvis in his film, Elvis on Tour. I had a memorable lunch with Elvis in the commissary and told him "We are going to get along great...we are both MAMA's BOYS!" I then joined my beloved mom's historic entertainment PR Firm at General Service Studios in Hollywood. Mom was one of only two women who had Hollywood PR firms. For three years, she taught me the PR business. I owe everything to my Mom! During the first week working for Mom, I walk into the office and Oscar Academy Award winner Joan Crawford is seated at moms desk! Joan gets up, hugs me, and says, “Your mom is the BEST PR exec that has ever represented me!”. George Burns was our next-door office member at the movie studio. Many movies and hit TV series were shot there. One day Mom told me that Michael Landon was shooting a film. I got entrance into the stage set, met Michael, and gave him my business card. He became my first PR client.  Working with mom, Simon & Schuster was our client. Every month, we had a number one S&S author. We set national tours for them. It was an invaluable experience! Mom taught me how to handle entertainment PR. Invaluable! After three years, I launched my own PR Firm. My first two entertainment clients were Michael Landon and Johnny Carson. My first two sports star clients were Jackie Robinson and Muhammad Ali. You have heard the Johnny Carson story. After booking Michael Landon on the Carson show, Johnny invited us to dinner at his Malibu home. Johnny toasted us with Cabernet Sauvignon and told me to start a Celebrity Speakers Bureau. Johnny said he would be my first client. Michael then chimed in, and Ed McMahon called me the next day. So, Bruce Merrin's Celebrity Speakers & Ent was launched FIFTY YEARS ago! I gave every ounce of passion I could into them and I walk away successful, they have a brighter future ahead,” he added. “I have no regrets and that story was nothing short of a backstabbing hit."In a Twitter thread on Dec. 19 he wrote: "A new group awaits and a new adventure comes in 2023. Some states are passing laws restricting curriculum related to racism and history. Portland area teachers rallied last week as part of a Day of Action opposing those bans and in support of educators around the country who are coming up against opposition for their work teaching history. They say you cannot learn history or current events without understanding the role that racism plays in our culture. We talk with two of those teachers: David Scholten, a fifth grade teacher at Abernathy Elementary school and Suzanna Kassouf, a 9th grade social studies teacher at Grant High School.

In this short segment I talk about “Stand and Deliver” and what the movie means to me. The story behind the movie is amazing and it is based on Jaime Escalante and his teaching experience in East L.A. at Garfield High. This movie has always meant a lot to me because of the students in the movie and what they have to deal with to become “successful.” I love teachers that find ways to raise the bar and demand more from their students. I believe I can relate to this movie because the main character reminds me of my father and just seeing a Bolivian teacher push his Latinx students to the next level was amazing. I highly recommend the movie to anyone who wants to be inspired and take his teachings to their real life. I used a lot of these lessons in my high school soccer coaching days at Grant High School and currently in my classroom. I strive to create real world experiences in the classroom for all of my students. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/educadence/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/educadence/support

Hal Arthur was pretty much what anybody would want from a high school teacher.  One of the most respected and beloved instructors at Grant High School in the San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles, Mr. Arthur was a real hero - something every teacher should strive for.  A true advocate and helper of his students, Hal Arthur gave his own time and resources to make sure all kids in his charge had every opportunity to succeed.  He even set up a travel agency to make it easier to take his Jewish (and non-Jewish) students on educational trips to the Holy Land.  But just shy of his 61st birthday, on March 24, 1989, Mr. Arthur was getting ready to go to work in the dark at 6:00 am - when he was shot four times outside his car, killed instantly by an assassin whom to this day the police say they can't be sure of.  Oh, but they have an idea.  And the primary - almost certain - culprit is one of the nastiest characters anyone ever dreamed of running across.  Just 16 years old when Hal Arthur was executed, he went on to become one of the most awful organized crime figures at a very young age.  Oh, he finally got nabbed for that activity, but to date no one has pinned the gruesome murder of a truly lovely and important soul - Hal Arthur - on this monster - or anyone else.  Listen in as Melissa retells the tragic, heartbreaking tale and asks - does someone out there know what actually happened - and if so, isn't now the time to come forward?

Huge murals painted on the walls of the Grant High School auditorium nearly 90 years ago depict white settlers and Native Americans existing in peace and harmony. A planned restoration of these murals has ignited fierce opposition from many students at the school, including the Indigenous Peoples Student Union. They say the depictions are ahistorical and offensive, and they want the murals removed. The Alumni Association, which has raised money for the restoration with the approval of Portland Public Schools, favors restoring the painting. It wants to use the paintings as a way to educate students about the actual history of whites and Indigenous People, and provide other supplemental art at the school that would do this. Our guests are Grant High School Alumni Association’s Bob Erickson; Indigenous Peoples Student Union representative, Aanii Tate; Nina Olsson, a conservator of paintings who’s contracted to restore the murals; and Grant High School principal, Carol Campbell.

He also appeared in number of TV series, mini-series and TV movies. Selleck also had a recurring role in the 1970s as "too good to be true" private investigator Lance White in The Rockford Files. Lance was very trusting and always lucky, much to the annoyance of Jim Rockford, the show's star private eye played by James Garner. White would frequently say to Rockford, "Don't worry Jim, clues will turn up" and then a clue would just turn up, much to Rockford's consternation, for whom obtaining clues required hard work and hard knocks. Selleck's character was based on one played in Garner's earlier TV series Maverick (1957) by Wayde Preston in the episode "The Saga of Waco Williams".Selleck, an accessible but relatively untested actor, spent years receiving little interest from the entertainment industry. His big break came when he was cast in the lead role as Thomas Magnum in Magnum, P.I.. The producers would not release the actor for other projects, so Selleck had to pass on the equally enticing film project for the role of Indiana Jones in "Raiders of the Lost Ark", which then went to rising star Harrison Ford. The choice between the roles of Indiana Jones and Magnum actually haunted Selleck so much that before making the decision, he consulted his best friend on what to do. Together they came to the conclusion taking the high road and honoring the first contract with Universal Studios was the career-savvy direction. It turned out shooting of the pilot for Magnum was delayed for over six months by a writers' strike, which would have enabled him to complete "Raiders".FilmSelleck starred in the 1979 TV movie Concrete Cowboys with Jerry Reed. He starred in a number of film roles during and after Magnum; among the most notable were as an acrophobic police detective in Runaway; as a stand-in father in Three Men and a Baby; and as an American 19th century sharpshooter in the Australian western Quigley Down Under – a role and film that he considers one of his best. His other films include Three Men and a Little Lady; High Road to China; Lassiter; Coma; Her Alibi; An Innocent Man; Folks!; Christopher Columbus: The Discovery; Mr. Baseball; In & Out and The Love Letter.Selleck is an avid outdoorsman, and a marksman and knowledgeable firearms collector. These interests led him to leading-man cowboy roles in Western films, starting with his role as cowboy and frontier marshal Orrin Sackett in the 1979 film The Sacketts, opposite Sam Elliott, Jeff Osterhage, and Western legendsGlenn Ford and Ben Johnson. He followed The Sacketts with The Shadow Riders in 1982, then portraying a cat burglar in 1930s London in Lassiter in 1984.Quigley Down Under is probably one of his best known Western films, however he also won a "Western Heritage Award" for his 1997 role in Last Stand at Sabre River. His last two cowboy roles to date were in the 2001 TNT movie Crossfire Trail (based on a Louis L'Amour novel of the same name), and the 2003 motion picture Monte Walsh. He most recently appeared in the film Killers, along with Katherine Heigl and Ashton Kutcher.TelevisionMagnum P.I.Selleck played the role of Thomas Magnum in 1980 after six failed TV pilots. Magnum was a former U.S. Navy Officer, a veteran of a special operations unit in the Vietnam War, who had resigned his commission with the Office of Naval Intelligence and become a private investigator living in Hawaii. The show would go on for eight seasons and 162 episodes until 1988, winning him an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series in 1984. Selleck was famous for his mustache, a Hawaiian-style aloha shirt, a Detroit Tigers baseball cap, and the Colt Model 1911A1 .45 ACP Caliber pistol his character carried. Magnum drove a Ferrari 308GTSi in the series. The model became so identified with the role that Ferrari fans now refer to the red-painted model as a "Magnum" Ferrari.Selleck has confirmed that he is the most popular choice by fans to play the role of Magnum in the rumoured upcoming Magnum P.I. movie.FriendsIn the late nineties, Selleck played the role of Richard Burke, Monica's boyfriend, at the end of the second season of the hugely successful TV series Friends. Richard was a divorced ophthalmologist who was a friend of Monica's parents, and at first the relationship was hidden from her parents. The relationship eventually ended over Richard's reluctance to commit to raising a family, though Selleck did make a few extra appearances in later shows. The CloserIn February 1998, Selleck accepted the lead role in a sitcom for CBS called The Closer. In it he played Jack McLaren, a legendary publicist heading up a brand new marketing firm. His costars included Ed Asner, David Krumholtz, and Penelope Ann Miller. Despite the high pedigree, and the expectations for his first series since Magnum, P. I., low ratings caused the show to be canceled after ten episodes.Jesse Stone seriesSince 2005, Selleck has starred in the role of transplanted lawman Jesse Stone in a series of made-for-TV movies based on Robert B. Parker's novels. To date, the series comprises eight films, with the most recent released on May 20, 2012. In addition to his portrayal of the films' protagonist, Selleck now also acts as producer for the series. The fifth film, Jesse Stone: Thin Ice, was not adapted from Parker's novels, but rather an original story by Selleck.Las VegasHe joined the cast of the NBC drama Las Vegas in the season-five premiere on September 28, 2007. He played A.J. Cooper, the new owner of the Montecito Casino. He replaced James Caanwho left the cast in the same episode. Frank Reagan (Selleck) is the Police Commissioner; the series follows the Reagan family of police officers with the New York City Police Department. The show premiered on September 24, 2010.Other workSelleck has also appeared in a number of made-for-TV movies in recent years. In particular, he has sought to help bring back to popularity the western, often playing one of that genre's typical characters but thrust into a modern context.Selleck was offered the lead role of Mitch Buchannon in Baywatch, but turned down the role because he did not want to be seen as a sex symbol. The role eventually went to David Hasselhoff.Surprising many of his fans, Selleck unexpectedly played the role of General Dwight D. Eisenhower in A&E's 2004 made-for-TV movie Ike: Countdown to D-Day. The movie showed the planning, politics, and preparation for the 1944 Invasion of Normandy, and Selleck was critically lauded for playing a cool, calm Eisenhower.Selleck appeared in a recurring role on the acclaimed ABC drama Boston Legal as Ivan Tiggs—the troubled ex-husband of Shirley Schmidt (Candice Bergen)—and as novelist Robert B. Parker's character Jesse Stone in several CBS made-for-TV movies, earning a 2007 Emmy nomination for Jesse Stone: Sea Change.BroadwayIn 2001, Selleck played the lead role of Murray in a Broadway revival of Herb Gardner's comedic play A Thousand Clowns. It ran for only two months. Critics, though far from uniformly negative about Selleck's performance, generally compared it unfavorably to that of Jason Robards, Jr., who won awards in the 1960s for playing the character on the stage and in a movie version. (It remains the role with which Robards is most identified.) Playwright Gardner, however, actually preferred Selleck to Robards in the part, and even said that Selleck was the way he had always envisioned Murray.
