In this episode I talk about Acceptance Commitment Training and how it can help sufferers of Long Covid. Patients with Long Covid who have undertaken this training are reporting benefits when combined with all the other strategies necessary to aid recovery from Long Covid. Acceptance Commitment Training helps patients come to terms with Long Covid, while they apply all the advice and guidance from the Post Covid Services – pacing, breath control, healthy diet, sleep hygiene and symptom control from the health professionals. Considering Acceptance Commitment Training does not mean that Long Covid is attributed to an imaginary mental condition. I am certainly not ‘psychologising' the condition; the vast body of research and evidence about Long Covid most convincingly demonstrates that Long Covid is certainly not ‘all in the head'.The purpose of this overview is to introduce you into the concept of Acceptance and Commitment. Hopefully you will find it interesting and maybe encouraged to consider it as part of your Long Covid recovery.I am Dr Tim Robinson, formerly a GP for 30 years, retired as planned at the start of the Covid pandemic. Since then I have become involved in the world of Long Covid. Dr. Lampasso introduces us to the world of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and its adaptation as Acceptance and Commitment Training in executive coaching.ACT, as Dr. Lampasso explains, is a cognitive behavioral framework that focuses on enhancing behaviors that align with our goals while addressing thoughts and emotions that can hinder progress. Whether working with individuals or teams, ACT proves to be a powerful tool in understanding motivations, overcoming obstacles, and achieving success. What's truly fascinating is Dr. Lampasso's ability to seamlessly apply these principles across a wide array of industries, both nonprofit and for-profit. Today I'm talking nerdy about neurodiversity with Alex Martynowicz. In today's conversation, Alex breaks down for us what neurodiversity is, the rise in neurodivergent diagnoses like ADHD and ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder), the difference between neurodivergent awareness and supportive action, and how neurotypical individuals can foster a greater environment of inclusivity and celebration. Alex is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst and yoga teacher, working with neurodivergent teens at a middle school through Acceptance and Commitment Training, yoga, mindfulness, and breathwork. Her neurodivergent-affirming practices aim to empower her students and give them tools to show up authentically, reduce anxiety, and live in a way that is in alignment with their own values.Alex is also a graduate of my neuroscience-based Breathwork + Meditation Teacher Training which we reference in this episode. We invite interested behavior analysts across related disciplines to share their aspirations on the evolution of our field. 2. Symposium #129 Diversity submission From the Tyranny of the Few to Survival of All: Culturo-Behavior Science for All Sunday, May 28, 2023 8:00 – 9:50 AM Convention Center Mile High Ballroom 2B Area: CSS/PCH; Domain: Translational Chair: Nanni Presti (Kore University) Discussant: Anthony Biglan (Oregon Research Institute) CE Instructor: Anthony Biglan, Ph.D. Abstract: Periodically, social upheavals challenge well established cultural rules and practices. A sampling of current tensions includes what is observed between those who accept social stratification as inevitable and those who labor for social justice, between conservative, progressive, and libertarian agendas, between those who would grant remarkable power to businesses and those who would limit those powers in favor of public health and climate justice. Culturo-behavior scientists have advanced a number of strategies grounded in evolutionary, prevention, and behavior sciences, Skinner's philosophy of science, and contemporary approaches to language and cognition. Advances in conceptual and empirical evidence for the planned use of interlocked behavior contingencies suggest that it is not too late to create a sustainable economy in which all humans matter, all voices are heard, and all can access basic goods and services. In this symposium, Giovambattista Presti, Francisco Perez, Thomas Szabo, Yukie Kurumiya, and Dennis Embry discuss these advances. At the end, Tony Biglan will provide commentary. 3. Pennypacker, Ph.D. Chair: Francisco Ignacio Perez (University of Texas Health Science Center - Houston School of Public Health) Henry Pennypacker (University of Florida) Naoko Sugiyama (Seisa University) Neil Timothy Martin (Behavior Analyst Certification Board) Abstract: The panel discussion will encourage audience participation. Together, we will focus on how we can promote and cultivate prosocial behavior on a global scale as well as in our own communities. As John Lennon told us, “imagine all the people living life in peace.” Skinner (1973) educated us that the science of behavior plays a leading role in creating an environment where cultural evolutionary changes for the better can be selected. He urged us to act and apply our knowledge about human behavior to prevent a catastrophic future and secure a healthy world for those who follow us. To accomplish these objectives, the panel will address the need to conceptualize our mission and discuss the necessity for formal training in the cultural and evolutionary sciences so that behavior analysts can become proficient leaders that can educate their communities and promote the environment that will facilitate behavior change, such as increasing the frequency of prosocial behavior, that will be needed to live together in harmony, peace, and prosperity. This can be our gift to those who follow us! Books and Articles mentioned for Behaviour Analysts (last name alphabetical): Tony Biglan's work (articles, books, etc.) related to prevention science and CBS to address societal and global issues are also inspiring readings. Sigrid Glenn's metatcontingencies and related articles will be amazing ones to read. One good example of their papers is this (co-authored). But there are more! Biglan, A & Glenn, S. (2013). When you're preparing your students for a career in the performance arts, technical knowledge isn't enough. Sometimes, even the most gifted students experience performance anxiety, preventing them from fully expressing themselves on stage or participating in lessons. Unfortunately, not every performer is willing or able to turn to a therapist, making it difficult for them to reach their goals. This week's guest Dr. David Juncos is looking to change that. A clinical psychologist and musician, David trains voice teachers in a non-clinical version of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), allowing them to address student anxiety issues. With David's aid, teachers learn to help students be more mindful when they experience music performance anxiety (MPA) and put that anxiety in its place. In our talk with David, we learn more about his background in music and psychology. We discover why certain students develop performance anxiety. And we learn how overcoming performance anxiety doesn't mean getting rid of anxiety but rather working with anxiety when we need to perform. In this episode, you'll learn:What motivated David to work with musicians and performers 9:14How David's early studies in MPA helped singers and musicians with performance anxiety 14:17Why David believes voice teachers don't need to outsource music performance anxiety problems to psychotherapists 17:27How David trains teachers in ACT coaching 18:01The type of students most likely to have performance anxiety 22:32The two major patterns David sees in people with performance anxiety 24:13How diffusion techniques help performers distance themselves from anxious thoughts 26:51Why mindfulness training and journaling help you sustain attention and choose which thoughts to focus on 28:49How David's book “ACT for Musicians” provides resources for understanding MPA and incorporating ACT into music lessons 32:40 The book David co-authored, “ACT for Musicians: A Guide for Using Acceptance and Commitment Training to Enhance Performance, Overcome Performance Anxiety, and Improve Well-Being” by David G. Juncos and Elvire de Paiva e Pona is available on both Amazon and Barnes & Noble.David's IVA webinar course, “Treating Music Performance Anxiety with Acceptance and Commitment Training (ACT)” shows how singing teachers can use ACT to treat MPA issues in their students.Connect with David on LinkedIn, where you can find links to many of his publications on ACT.We hope you enjoyed our podcast. David Juncos is a clinical psychologist, author and performance coach who specialises in music performance anxiety. His treatment approach includes the use of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and he has presented his research on this subject on an international scale. He is a faculty member at the Voice Study Centre and his book, Act for Musicians: A Guide for Using Acceptance and Commitment Training to Enhance Performance, Overcome Performance Anxiety and Improve Well-being, is available for purchase now. KEY TAKEAWAYS David is a musician at heart and in his work as a psychologist naturally gravitated towards musicians – this led to his interest in the area of music performance anxiety (MPA). When you have social anxiety, you have a fear of doing things in front of others. When you combine that fear with other symptoms that are highly distressing, you have a disorder. The disorder is not just the presence of symptoms but the presence of symptoms plus distress over having symptoms. People with performance anxiety experience many different symptoms including: physiological arousal symptoms such as tachycardia and shortness of breath; cognitive symptoms, so what your mind is doing when anxious; and behavioural symptoms. Behavioural symptoms cover avoidant or anxious behaviours such as not making eye contact during a performance or positioning yourself further away from the audience. ACT is part of a wave of newer behavioural psychotherapies that have become popular in the last 20 or 30 years. ACT encourages people to learn to coexist with anxious thoughts rather than try to eliminate them. The aim is to create a neutral relationship with anxiety so that you're not in an adversarial tug-of-war role with yourself and your anxiety. BEST MOMENTS ‘There was a lack of good methodological rigour in how these psychotherapies were being studied in the lab' ‘What your mind is doing when anxious is worrying about making a mistake and worrying about the implications and making it' ‘Being female unfortunately makes you more likely to have MPA' EPISODE RESOURCES BAST Training Guest Website: actformusicians.com hptherapy.com http://www.hptherapy.com/OurPsychotherapists.en.html#DavidJ Social Media: Research Gate: researchgate.net/profile/David-Juncos-2 Linked In: https://www.linkedin.com/in/david-juncos-psy-d-b688a53b/ Relevant Links & Mentions: Voice Study Centre: voicestudycentre.com Singing Teachers Talk Podcast - Ep 76. Let's get excited again about ACT by learning a lot of the background technology. RFT is like the engine that powers ACT, as stated by Tarbox et al., 2020. This article breaks down terms and then shows the average practitioner how to apply this process to a practitioner science. Kelly, A. D., Kelly, M. E. (2022). Acceptance and Commitment Training in Applied Behavior Analysis: Where Have You Been All My Life? Behavior Analysis in Practice, 15, 43–54 (2022). https://doi.org/10.1007/s40617-021-00587-3
This week, we are going to break down and have a conversation about acceptance and commitment therapy/training. Tarbox et al., wrote a great paper explaining a little bit about ACT and how it fits into the behavior analytic lense. However, such a large topic results in a large paper, so we are going to break this article up into two podcasts. This next part goes into some of the common criticisms of ACT and how ACT is baked into the task list! Tarbox, J., Szabo, T. G., & Aclan, M. In Episode 25 I'm joined by Dr. John Evans, a mental health professional, from BLND Health to discuss Acceptance and Commitment Training. You may remember this topic from Episode 5 with Steven Hayes, widely regarded as the “father” of ACT. In Episode 5 we talked about the ACT framework in its entirety and it's an amazing listen (in fact it is our most downloaded episode). This episode will be from a little different perspective on ACT, as we'll look at how fitness and wellness professionals can use ACT in their own practice with clients to assist in health behavior change. At its heart, ACT is a coaching framework that can help fitness and wellness professionals work with their clients to accept and defuse from the negative thoughts and emotions that arise with health behavior change. Then, through the skills ACT teaches, help clients move toward valued and committed action and, most importantly, toward a healthier lifestyle. The most exciting thing about ACT is it is very concrete and skill-based (and skills can be learned). This is in contrast to Cognitive Behavioral approaches that tend to be more abstract, more emotionally painful, and (based on the current evidence) don't seem to work as well for behavior change as ACT. My personal experience also validates this notion. Our conversation will talk about the specific facets of ACT that can be utilized by fitness and wellness professionals, as well as actionable steps to apply these helpful elements of ACT with clients. Further, as ACT is a psychological framework used in treating psychological disorders we'll also discuss when it is appropriate to refer out to a licensed mental health professional and how to facilitate that referral effectively and compassionately. For anyone of us who works with clients/patients on health behavior change that is difficult to implement (and that's certainly all of us) this episode is a must listen.Show Notes Page: www.wellnessparadoxpod.com/episode25Our Guest: Dr. John Evans, MA, PhD, CMPCJohn is the Director of Mental Conditioning for BLND Health. Along with a Master's Degree in Counseling Psychology, John earned a doctorate in Kinesiology – Sport and Performance Psychology from The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Working alongside a wide range of athletes and elite performers, John also worked 7 years with U.S. Army Special Operations Forces (SOF), training mental performance and human engagement skills. John sees clients for mental skills development for performance in sport (and other areas) in Ann Arbor, Royal Oak, and Kalamazoo, Michigan. He's also available for virtual coaching wherever you're based.

The science of ABA is solidly supported by generations of research, but in recent years the clinical approach has been criticized from within and without. In this panel discussion, the discussants identify behavior analytic concepts that emphasize the importance of compassionate care as we apply our science. From Skinner's early writings on the use of behavior analysis to create a kinder world, to Acceptance and Commitment Training practitioners' application of behavioral principles to complex private events in order to alleviate human suffering, behavior analysis has many examples of ways it can and should be applied in a humane and caring way. This next chapter has a special guest appearance by our very own research rockstar Julia Ferguson! During this chapter Justin, Joe, and Julia will discuss and critically evaluate Acceptance and Commitment Training from a behavior analytic perspective. This discussion will include a sneak peek at the results of a literature review that is currently under review in a peer reviewed behavior analytic journal. The hosts will provide their perspectives, concerns, and pathways forward with respect to Acceptance and Commitment Training and behavior analysis.
Steven C Hayes is the originator of ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, or Acceptance and Commitment Training, take your pick), one of the most important psychological approaches of the past 100 years.
Steven C Hayes is the originator of ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, or Acceptance and Commitment Training, take your pick), one of the most important psychological approaches of the past 100 years. Why the high praise? For several reasons: ACT is evidence-based ACT is learnable ACT is actionable ACT can be practiced and shared by pretty much any human in any role, unlike most therapies that require degrees and certifications. ACT is built from the ground up from fundamental theories of human cognition and behavior ACT seeks to create mental health, rather than simply address mental illness In our conversation, we tackled the question that has vexed so many philosophers: Why is it so damn hard to be a human? Get 1 ASHA CMH herePreparing for this blog post was difficult for a variety of reasons. First, how could we possibly summarize a crisis that is affecting the whole world in such a massive way? Second, adjusting to the “new normal” of COVID is something that looks different for everybody. We may all be in this moment simultaneously, but all of our experiences are unique to who we are, where we live, our support systems, and a myriad of other variables. Finally, who are we to give advice or even discuss such a complex and sensitive topic? We aren’t anyone special at all. We are two professionals, stumbling through this pandemic, trying to find balance in this unprecedented chaos like everyone else. Our goal for this episode was to discuss the challenges that COVID-19 poses for those of us working as clinicians, and to highlight acceptance commitment therapy, referred to as ACT, as an evidence-based way to cope in this new normal. As we reviewed in our first ACT episode related to stress management, ACT is an evidence-based framework that combines strategies of mindfulness and committed actions to move towards your personal values. The heart of this approach is centered upon developing behavioral flexibility in order to create a rich and meaningful life and to cope with the inevitable stressors that are part of being human in the world. ACT is rooted in applied behavior analysis but in its development has pulled components from several different branches of psychology including CBT, DBT, and mindfulness. These strategies can be applied to any situations where negative thoughts or feelings arise.ASHA professional development hours are offered for this course (1 CMH). This episode, I introduce listeners to Acceptance and Commitment Training as a way to cope with the challenges of dealing with anxiety, stress, and frustration. I talk about the process and strategies of accepting challenging events that happen, and identify a few simple ways to defuse (distance oneself) from them. This is part one of a series of episodes designed to help reduce the negative impacts that stress and anxiety have on a parent, or anyone who is, well - human, and deals with such emotions. It’s always interesting to learn how clinicians bring themselves into alignment with their deeper purpose and values. When this happens, the clinician will feel greater satisfaction and fulfillment in the work they do. Today’s show is another that focuses on ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Training) as we talk to today’s guest about his experience as he transitioned into private practice. David Teachout is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Seattle, Washington, although he has branched out to a full-service online practice that incorporates acceptance and commitment therapy. We’re discussing his journey and how he transitioned into private practice from community mental health. David shares what it was like for him to take an uncertain leap from something familiar and comfortable, and how he incorporates ACT into his conversations with clients in big and small ways. David also tells about starting his online counseling practice and how that aligns perfectly with his values. You can read the full show notes at: Session193

In this podcast episode, Dr. Gallo talks about what is acceptance and commitment education and training or what we like to call ACT. You’ll learn about the six core, science-based ACT skills, which are observing myself, being present, watching thoughts, opening up, identifying values, and taking action. Dr. Gallo also introduces you to the Crosshairs diagram. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a so-called third-generation branch of CBT which teaches new ways of looking at our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Instead of fighting and demanding that troublesome thoughts and feelings go away, ACT emphasizes accepting the existence of those thoughts and feelings, and going ahead and living life fruitfully nonetheless. ACT teaches us to create a distance, at will, between our "reactive self" who might tumble around in thoughts and emotions, and our "executive self" who can take a step back and decide to go ahead with the best plan anyway. Accomplishing this involves Active Self-Awareness, or "mindfulness", Acceptance, Cognitive Defusion, Knowledge of our Values, and Committed Action. These are skills we can learn to improve our lives and use more of our energy toward our goals, and in line with our life values. Adding ACT skills to REBT and SMART Tools, we can move toward a rewarding life with long-term satisfaction. Dr Robb emphasizes the importance of moving toward a positive goal, rather than just moving away from maladaptive behavior. This is enormously helpful for healthy living and sustained recovery. As Dr Robb mentions in his talk, you may also consider ACT to be Acceptance and Commitment "Training" to improve your skills. Psychological Flexibility is one of the hallmarks of ACT. Dr. Hank Robb has a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology, is a Supervisor for the Institute for Rational-Emotive Therapy in New York, is Board Certified in both Counseling Psychology and Behavioral Psychology, is Certified in the Treatment of Alcohol and Other Psychoactive Substance Use, and is one of the Founding Members of the Board of SMART Recovery®.
