National Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice for Translators and Interpreters in Education As the educational interpreting and translation professions in the United States mature and evolve, it is essential to create a clear, shared understanding of research-based, relevant, and ethically appropriate principles and practices. To define and guide ethical behavior, AAITE followed a formal research process to obtain data about the critical ethical situations professional interpreters and translators in education face daily. To make this document accessible to all, in addition to selecting the ethical principles, we created standards of practice, each with accompanying examples, to clarify the scope of ethical behavior. This work is a labor of love that expresses our profound respect for those whom we serve as well as for those who work in thissetting. CULTURE cannot be separated from language. Language carries the values, beliefs, customs, and societal norms of the culture it comes from. The ways in which people express themselves, the words they use, their idioms and metaphors, all reflect the unique aspects of their cultural identity. The National Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice for Translators and Interpreters in Education are the result of a four-year effort and thousands of hours of work conducted by a group of dedicated volunteers. This effort is a foundational step in AAITE's mission of contributing to the professionalization of the fields of educational interpreting and translation. To achieve this goal in a structured and organized manner, the Ethics and Standards Committee defined the following 11-step development process. Let us all elevate the professional recognition of Translators and Interpreters working in education! The final goal is to develop a National Certification. What are the standards and expectations? In this episode, Bob discussed how originally substance misuse was not an area that he worked with, but after it kept showing up with his clients he decided he needed and pursued more training. He discussed how he was part of the Family Recovery Project at the Mental Research Institute with Drs. Stephanie Brown and Virginia Lewis, a study aimed at what happens in couple and family systems after beginning recovery. Bob's research, a qualitative study on long-term couple recovery, led to him creating a model called the “Couple Recovery Development Approach (CRDA), a theory for explaining how couples can successfully navigate the challenges found in the transition from active addiction to active recovery. Bob talked about the impact of the trauma of addiction, and the trauma of recovery relating that the first year in recovery was challenging, and that relapse rates are high in that first year. He explained how with couples he externalizes addiction and explores how it has invaded their relationship, in a way so that they can both talk about the impact of this unwanted intruder. He discussed how clinicians often believe it's important not to work on the couple relationship in the beginning of recovery, because each partner is supposed to focus on their individual recovery, but he pointed out that couples impacted by addiction have the highest divorce rate of any other comorbidities, and there actually isn't any empirical studies to support that approach; in fact research does support the concept that healthy relationships are found to be the biggest predictor of long-term sobriety. It turns out that couples work is one of the most effective ways to identify addiction and move people into recovery. Rather than the common belief that addiction is contraindicated for couples therapy, We addressed the issues of codependency. While it can be helpful in defining issues for the non-using partner, it's limited. Bob said he feels it is important to add the concept of secondhand harm, and post-traumatic-stress-disorder to normalize partner's experiences and not pathologize them with the singular term “codependency”. He described his intervention called H.E.A.R.T. (Healing Emotions from Addiction Recovery and Trauma), which helps partners to process the trauma from addiction, without blame or defensiveness. Robert Navarra, Psy.D, LMFT, MAC is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Certified Gottman Therapist and Master Trainer, and holds National Certification as a Master Addiction Counselor. He has trained counselors and therapists nationally and internationally. Dr. Navarra has co-authored several book chapters with Drs. John and Julie Gottman, and co-authored articles on Gottman Therapy for The Encyclopedia of Couple and Family Therapy with Dr. John Gottman. Based on his research at Mental Research Institute in Palo Alto California, Bob created “Roadmap for the Journey: A Path for Couple Recovery”, a two-day workshop for couples in recovery from an addictive disorder. “Roadmap for the Journey” has been a featured workshop at Hazelden Betty Ford and has been given at treatment programs as well as in small, semi-private workshop settings. Bob and John Gottman are currently researching the impact of Roadmap for the Journey in helping couples integrate recovery into their relationship, a missing element in most treatment programs. In collaboration with the Gottman Institute, Bob has also created a one-day training workshop for counselors and therapists, called “Couples and Addiction Recovery.” He also teaches graduate classes on addictive disorders at Santa Clara University. Seeing perfect grill marks on a steak, having the smell of garlic & onions hitting you as you walk by an open kitchen, or hearing the sizzle of fajitas as they come to your table - these all enhanced and elevate our dining experience. But what about everything around you that isn‘t on the plate? The atmosphere and ambiance of the physical space where you enjoy these meals also has an impact on how you process the experience. And it is critical when you factor in the factors that come with creating a space that is both communal, home-like, and geared for an older adult. If you could share One Big Idea to change the future of education, what would it be? In the 15th episode of Future of School's One Big Idea series, our guest is Rudy Flores, who has 30+ years of experience in education as a teacher, principal and superintendent. Rudy is now Executive VP & Chief Development Officer for ChanceLight Education. Rudy shares his big idea of a portable national credential for teachers. He describes how the national teacher shortage makes this an urgent priority. With his idea, teachers' certifications and licensures can be transferred across states. This would help address areas of need in different states who are short on teachers with certain specializations or other areas of expertise. Even in the absence of specific shortages, it would allow teachers with adequate experience and expertise more options in their careers and, as a whole, benefit students by expanding access to highly qualified teachers. Our journey has taken us a long ways from the time we recorded these episodes, but many have still found help and hope for healing in the information. If you would like support in healing from betrayal we'd invite you to look at our program https://www.beyond-enough.com/beyondbetrayal It is not a program about staying together or leaving your partner, but rather finding the healing we need as an individual who has been made aware of our partner cheating. MUSIC FOR DOC SHOCK (JIM) Concussion study out of Canada looking at the link between concussion and suicide. Researchers from the University of Toronto, the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences (ICES) and Sunnybrook Research Institute, all of Toronto, in Canada. Looked at 235,110 patients who had a concussion over a 20-year period. The patients were aged 41 years on average, evenly split between genders, and most lived in cities. The majority had no suicide attempt, hospitalization or past psychiatric disorder. In the 9.3 years following the concussion, 667 suicides occurred. Weekday concussion incidents were associated with 519 suicides, or 29 per 100,000 people. This was triple the rate for the general population of Canada, and higher than that for military personnel. There were 148 suicides among weekend concussion patients. At 39 per 100,000, this was four times the population norm. Basically, a concussion triples or quadruples the risk of suicide.
